VMware Workstation 7 - Setting Different Date In Guest OS?
Oct 23, 2012
I am trying to deliberately set a different date in my guest os to that of my host os. My host is Windows 7 (x64), my guest is XP (SP3), and my virtualization software is VMware Workstation (7). In an attempt to set this up I have done the following -
1). Added a line to the VMX file
2). Booted into and modified the BIOS settings of the guest XP os (setting the date back in time to the 08/08/2008) -
3). Disabled the guest XP os internet time synchronization settings -
When I first boot into the XP guest I see the following date - However after about 2 - 5 seconds the date is restored to that on the Host - how to set a different guest os date / time.

We have a Windows 7 Host running VMware Workstation with 5 virtual machines, One Windows server, 2 Windows 7 machines and 2 Windows XP machines.The host and non server VM's are fine, they run 100% of the time and never have problems, my SBS 2011 VM is another story. There have been nothing but crashe's over the past 6 months and they are fairly random.I beleive the server BSOD's and then it reboots, upon rebooting it just sits at a black loading windows screen forever until you completely power it off and then back on, at which time it boots up normally.The BSOD's happen ususaly around 12 AM when Windows server backup runs and creates a server backup on another server over the network, the backup runs 7 days a week but we only see the BSOD about twice a month.I have run through drivers in my SBS 2011 install and all seem up to date to me.

The computer (Notebook, Home Premium) had an option to press ctrl+alt+del to log in, and I wanted to change that, so I went to netplwiz and unclicked the option to require users to press ctrl+alt+del to log in.I restarted and then I realized after Flash player tried to update that the computer is telling me to enter an administrator password but there is no place to enter the password. After that, I also realized that the only user on the computer who is supposed to be the administrator, is shown as a guest account.While I was unclicking that option in netplwiz; I saw that the only user was defined as "boinc, administrator". I didn't much care about that at the time; could that boinc thing could be the reason for the only user being change to guest from administrator?I had to restore the computer like 2 weeks ago because of that (It is not a main computer, so it is not being used that much).How can I make sure that this 'guest' thing doesn't happen again when changing system settings?Is the 'boinc' thing the reason for this? Could it be another thing?

I have turned on the Guest account, and I need to set program and folder access permissions. I have google'ed the way to set file and folder permissions, but I am having some difficulty with some of the things that I need.
For instance I need to:
-deny access (just deny listing the directory structure; can read & write so apps can work) to C:* , Control Panel, and a few other locations
If I try to deny dir listing for Guest on root C: , it gives me a couple warnings and will not set permissions for "program files, program files x86, windows" folders even though I am the admin. After those initial issues, it continues to set the permissions for all the rest of the files. If I log into the guest now, goto Computer and double click on C: , it now says "access denied", which is good but if I type in the address bar up top "C:users", it will goto that location; not display the access denied message. I am using the Home Premium edition so I cannot use the Group Policy Editor..

I get error 1068, but the network store interface service is started. I've tried to run sfc /scannow, but there are no problems there.I'm running win 7 64bit?

I can turn on a pc from another machine on the same home network, but can not from the Internet.I am doing this Wake-On-WAN experiment at home by using two machines each connected to the Internet through different ISP.The problem must be somewhere in the BIOS or the router setting for the machine to be turned on.I reviewed the BIOS and found the relevant option was enabled by default. As for the router(D-Link DIR 655), I set the portforwarding for the machine with a arbitrary port number(I picked 9) assigned. I did not see anything else relevant but I might have missed something.To send the magic packet, I am using depicus GUI. I also tried one at dslreports website.So far no luck yet. By using packet analysis utility of Wireshark, I could confirmed that the magic packet is hitting the router for the target PC but for some reason, the router does not forward the packet to the target PC's NIC. Instead, it broadcasts ARP to get the MACID of the NIC. Note that the magic packet contains the MAC ID and this is confirmed by intercepting this packet at the sending end PC.

I'm helping a Dental Office get their current workstations upgraded. All workstations are complete and ready to swap out the old hardware, except i am worried that when the users go to log back into the domain from the new pc's, they won't be able to.
The previous IT guy said they are local profiles, located on each individual PC and not on the server? I thought setting up a Domain was so people could log in from any computer on the network?

I was cleaning out some stuff in storage and ran across a Windows NT 4 Workstation CD (in original jacket). On a whim, I made an ISO of the CD and actually got it working under VirtualBox 4.0.6 running in Windows 7 x64 Ultimate w/SP1.
Windows NT 4 wouldn't recognize a 8GB virtual disk drive, so I made it 4GB with an assigned 1GB of ram and 32MB of video.
Total installation time was less than 15 minutes on a quad core w/8GB of ram.
The built in browser is Internet Explorer 2.0 It does require a valid CD-KEY to install NT Workstation 4, just in case you were wondering.

I work in a domain environment administering a large number of workstations running Windows 7 enterprise. I want to restrict regular users from shutting down their PCs so that I can perform remote administrative tasks without walking out on the floor and ensuring all 300 + machines are actually turned on. I do not have rights to the domain controller so I cannot assign by group policy. I can use psexec or ntrights to remove shutdown options from explorer but users can still initiate the shutdown command via cmd and pressing the power button on the tower still invokes a shutdown. Note: I am not talking about a cold shutdown i.e holding the power button (I can't actually do anything about that). So is there a way (perhaps in the registry) to disable the shutdown command for all users except the local administrator? I'll need to do this to over 300 PCs so if it can be done via script of command line that would be best

I have the following workstation configuration :
PROCESSOR - Dual (two processors) - Xeon E5520 8M Cache, 2.26 GHz, 5.86 GT/s Intel QPI
MOTHERBOARD - Intel Workstation board S5520 SC
GRAPHICS CARD - Palit Nvidia GeForce GTX 275 (986 MB) Dual DVI out
RAM - DDR3 1333 MHz 6 GB (G-Skill)
MONITORS - 2 are connected (Samsung Sync Master 2233 & NEC Accusync LCD 224WXM)
CURRENT OPERATING SYSTEM - Windows XP 64 bit
The problem with the above configuration is that when I try to install Windows 7, the machine freezes (hangs) randomly, I have tried formatting and installing for at-least 4-5 times now but what happens is the setup doesn't work and stops during installation, last time the setup was successful but it hangs the workstation without any reason. I have also tried installing the same CD on other system and it works fine.

I've recently bought a new PC with Windows 7 on it. My old PCI TV card, webcam, scanner etc. won't work on new Windows (6-7 years old devices with no Windows 7 drivers that could be found anywhere on net). Is there any way that I can use my old PCI TV card on new PC using VMWare?
P.S. I bought new PCI TV card, but I just can't get it to work fine [always have to switch between front mic/line in, every 2-3 days i have to scan for channels, can't set the volume level (+/- but it's always the same) etc.]. The new TV card is iNTEX Philips 7130!? Can I make it run on VMWare Windows XP machine?

When I try to join a homegroup from the virtual PC it does not show me the Homegroup of the laptop, instead it prompts me to create a new homegroup. I create a new homegroup with the name HOME (same as the laptop homegoup name). After that the two computers, the laptop and the virtual PC in the laptop do not communicate with each other in the network. Therefore I conclude that somehow there are two different homegroups with the same name, one in the laptop and the other one in the virtual PC.

Just a little hard to find bit of info on increasing the graphics size memory for the virtual SVGA graphics adapter on a Virtual Machine running under vmware products.
The default is only 16 MB (VRAM) which probably isn't enough to get Aero going on a Windows 7 Virtual machine. You need WKS 7 / vmware workstation 3.0 for 3D support in any case.
Solution
Edit the .vmx file with notepad (Open with notepad) and insert this line
svga.vramSize = "sizeInBytes"
I think 64MB is needed for AERO -- mine works with 64MB - but you could try 32.
Vm runs with FULL AERO -- no prob at all.
here's what I added to my .vmx file for a Windows 7 Professional X-64 Virtual machine - look at the last line.
pciBridge7.pciSlotNumber = "24"
scsi0.pciSlotNumber = "160"
usb.pciSlotNumber = "32"
ethernet0.pciSlotNumber = "33"
sound.pciSlotNumber = "34"
ehci.pciSlotNumber = "35"
vmci0.pciSlotNumber = "36"
scsi0.sasWWID = "50 05 05 66 67 3e f6 b0"
vmotion.checkpointFBSize = "134217728"
usb:0.present = "TRUE"
usb:1.present = "TRUE"
ethernet0.generatedAddressOffset = "0"
vmci0.id = "780936453"
usb:1.deviceType = "hub"
usb:0.deviceType = "mouse"
ide1:0.autodetect = "FALSE"
ide1:0.allowGuestConnectionControl = "FALSE"
tools.upgrade.policy = "manual"
scsi0:1.present = "TRUE"
scsi0:1.fileName = "Windows 7_pro x64-0.vmdk"
scsi0:1.redo = ""
floppy0.present = "FALSE"
ide1:0.startConnected = "TRUE"
svga.vramSize = "64000000"
Give it say 64 MB. Don't forget its size in BYTES you have to set -- if you do it wrong then the VM won't power on so backup the .vmx file before messing around with it.
