Homegroups Between VMWare And Laptop
Aug 10, 2011
When I try to join a homegroup from the virtual PC it does not show me the Homegroup of the laptop, instead it prompts me to create a new homegroup. I create a new homegroup with the name HOME (same as the laptop homegoup name). After that the two computers, the laptop and the virtual PC in the laptop do not communicate with each other in the network. Therefore I conclude that somehow there are two different homegroups with the same name, one in the laptop and the other one in the virtual PC.

I have a laptop and a desktop. Both are running Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit. The laptop connects wirelessly to the router and the desktop is connected directly to the router with a cable. The laptop displays the network name that I assigned when I set up the network. However, the desktop displays that it is connected to "Network 2." When I try to create a homegroup, the system says that you must be on the same network. I think that Windows 7 is splitting the wired and wireless connection into two networks. Any ideas of how to fix this?

Why can you not create multiple homegroups on one network? Or is this something that's just hiding from me?

I was finally able to get HomeGroups working on my PC and the HTPC.
My brother downloads videos (Top Gear) through my PC and would like to be able to transfer them to his afterwards.
It seems I'm able to copy the files from my PC to the HTPC, but not cut them. It mentions that he (HTPC) needs administrative permission.
What settings do I need to enable him to cut the files?

got Windows 7, and we both are now running it. I was eager to check out the homegroup function of Windows 7. Now, we are both visible to each other in the home group, but neither of us can open the others libraries. When I try to open her library, absolutely nothing happens.

I'm using a desktop running Windows 7 (soon to be 8) Ultimate. My target computer is a laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium.
If I download a file, is it possible for me to set a download destination directly to the laptop if I initiate the download from the desktop? The computers will be on the same network and part of a Homegroup (if that matters). I'd like to create a folder on the desktop screen of the laptop, and have the files end up there.
Alternatively, I suppose I could have the file download to the desktop computer, and then I could wirelessly transfer it over via the Homegroups, but moving 1-2GB files would probably suck bandwidth and increase system resources on my end.
EDIT: Is this also possible with a second desktop computer as well? (One primary client, and two satellite computers).

I intend to keep the vista hard drive and run it on a win 7 machine in a virtual environment. Can I run an external drive with pre installed vista in a virtual machine on windows 7 or is an actual vista instillation required.

I've recently bought a new PC with Windows 7 on it. My old PCI TV card, webcam, scanner etc. won't work on new Windows (6-7 years old devices with no Windows 7 drivers that could be found anywhere on net). Is there any way that I can use my old PCI TV card on new PC using VMWare?
P.S. I bought new PCI TV card, but I just can't get it to work fine [always have to switch between front mic/line in, every 2-3 days i have to scan for channels, can't set the volume level (+/- but it's always the same) etc.]. The new TV card is iNTEX Philips 7130!? Can I make it run on VMWare Windows XP machine?

Just a little hard to find bit of info on increasing the graphics size memory for the virtual SVGA graphics adapter on a Virtual Machine running under vmware products.
The default is only 16 MB (VRAM) which probably isn't enough to get Aero going on a Windows 7 Virtual machine. You need WKS 7 / vmware workstation 3.0 for 3D support in any case.
Solution
Edit the .vmx file with notepad (Open with notepad) and insert this line
svga.vramSize = "sizeInBytes"
I think 64MB is needed for AERO -- mine works with 64MB - but you could try 32.
Vm runs with FULL AERO -- no prob at all.
here's what I added to my .vmx file for a Windows 7 Professional X-64 Virtual machine - look at the last line.
pciBridge7.pciSlotNumber = "24"
scsi0.pciSlotNumber = "160"
usb.pciSlotNumber = "32"
ethernet0.pciSlotNumber = "33"
sound.pciSlotNumber = "34"
ehci.pciSlotNumber = "35"
vmci0.pciSlotNumber = "36"
scsi0.sasWWID = "50 05 05 66 67 3e f6 b0"
vmotion.checkpointFBSize = "134217728"
usb:0.present = "TRUE"
usb:1.present = "TRUE"
ethernet0.generatedAddressOffset = "0"
vmci0.id = "780936453"
usb:1.deviceType = "hub"
usb:0.deviceType = "mouse"
ide1:0.autodetect = "FALSE"
ide1:0.allowGuestConnectionControl = "FALSE"
tools.upgrade.policy = "manual"
scsi0:1.present = "TRUE"
scsi0:1.fileName = "Windows 7_pro x64-0.vmdk"
scsi0:1.redo = ""
floppy0.present = "FALSE"
ide1:0.startConnected = "TRUE"
svga.vramSize = "64000000"
Give it say 64 MB. Don't forget its size in BYTES you have to set -- if you do it wrong then the VM won't power on so backup the .vmx file before messing around with it.

There are three Windows 7 64 bit machines on our homegroup. Two work fine together and both of them can access the material on the problem 3rd machine as well as each other. However the third machine cannot access the material on either of the other two even though their icons and folders show under "Homegroup" on the problem 3rd machine. I have followed instructions Ultimate Troubleshooting Guide for Windows 7 HomeGroup Connection Issues and elsewhere on both the problem 3rd machine and one of the other two. No change. I have tried with the problem machine hard wired to the network and connected via wi-fi. Makes no difference. Clicking, in Homegroup on the 3rd machine on a shared folder on either of the other two machines gets the message "Windows cannot access", code as above, it also says "Network Path Not Found" and then offers a diagnosis routine which fails to identify the problem and then has you going round in circles.The problem machine is running Home Premium as is one of the OK machines, the other is running Ultimate. All three are running AVG Internet Security 2012 which I have also disabled on the problem and ok machines separately and simultaneoulsy - it made no difference.

I have a Windows 7 64-bit installation disc that I used to install Windows 7 with on my laptop. I am planning on installing Windows 7 on VMWare player with the same 64-bit disc, but as a trial (since my main key is used on the main host/laptop). Will I be able to just run the 30-day trial on VMWare for testing purposes? Also, once the trial ends, can I just delete the virtual machine and make a new windows 7 VM, setting up a 30-day trial again?

I have obviously deleted lots of stuff I am not suppose to delete as I have had nothing but pc problems ever since. My host machine is Windows XP SP3 Guest OS is Scientific Linux When I go to verify which processes are running it only shows vmnat.exe running but not vmnetdhcp.exe so I try to see if I can install vmnetdhcp.exe but get the pop-up window message "DllRegisterServer entry point was not found".

Has anyone tried ReadyBoost on a virtual Windows 7 machine on a Mac running VMWare Fusion?
I am running Windows 7 on a Macbook Pro with 8GB of RAM and the Virtual Windows machine really slows everything down globally. I have tried configuring the Windows VR with 2GB, 1.5GB and 1GB of RAM. Configuring the virtual machine with more than 2GB of RAM really slows down the Mac. Hoping that ReadyBoost might improve things.

I am trying to install Windows 7 on a VMware 7 virtual machine, and it is asking for a driver. Windows 7 installs on just about any hardware you can throw at it. I have tried it on an ancient workstation with SCSI drives, and it installs without a problem. The same with serial ATA machines. Under Windows XP you would have to first supply it with a driver.
But now when I try to install Windows 7 on a VMware 7 virtual machine, it won't install. After the preliminary steps of asking for language and localization, it asks for a driver. Any idea why it does that, and what kind of driver it wants, and where I can get hold of one?

For those who want to try out SUSE LINUX 11.4 (KDE version) without hassle of install etc then you can download a vmware version with a lot of apps already installed.The link also gives a few other Linux distro choices. These should also work with VMPLAYER too if you don't have vmware workstation.VMware image and appliance download Use the Bittorrent download to keep the server load bandwidth down -- BTW this is a 100% TOTALLY LEGAL and GOOD use of Bittorrent - all torrents aren't illegal / pirated software. Loads of linux distros are supplied this way as well.(Hope not against Forum rules - but I do know lots of people have an interest in trying out / learning Linux and by running as a VM on Windows seems to me an EXCELLENT way of not only learning about Linux but also discovering the great use of Virtual Machines too).

I was using this product the other day in production at work and noticed that 5.0 was much slower than the 4.x versions of the product. I found that VMWare enabled SSL encryption during the conversion and this slows down the process by 2-3x. A box I used to be able to convert in 4 hours and 50 minutes, took 11 hours and 50 minutes. Anyway, you can easily change the behavior. Navigate to C:ProgramDataVMwareVMware vCenter Converter Standalone and edit the converter-worker.xml file.
Near the bottom, you will find this section: Code: <nfc>
<readTimeoutMs>120000</readTimeoutMs>
<useSsl>true</useSsl>
<!-- Delay is specified in milliseconds, -1 denotes the default.
<acceptTimeoutMs>-1</acceptTimeoutMs>
<requestTimeoutMs>-1</requestTimeoutMs>
[code]......
Then simply restart the VMware vCenter Converter StandAlone worker service.

I am trying to deliberately set a different date in my guest os to that of my host os. My host is Windows 7 (x64), my guest is XP (SP3), and my virtualization software is VMware Workstation (7). In an attempt to set this up I have done the following -
1). Added a line to the VMX file
2). Booted into and modified the BIOS settings of the guest XP os (setting the date back in time to the 08/08/2008) -
3). Disabled the guest XP os internet time synchronization settings -
When I first boot into the XP guest I see the following date - However after about 2 - 5 seconds the date is restored to that on the Host - how to set a different guest os date / time.

We have a Windows 7 Host running VMware Workstation with 5 virtual machines, One Windows server, 2 Windows 7 machines and 2 Windows XP machines.The host and non server VM's are fine, they run 100% of the time and never have problems, my SBS 2011 VM is another story. There have been nothing but crashe's over the past 6 months and they are fairly random.I beleive the server BSOD's and then it reboots, upon rebooting it just sits at a black loading windows screen forever until you completely power it off and then back on, at which time it boots up normally.The BSOD's happen ususaly around 12 AM when Windows server backup runs and creates a server backup on another server over the network, the backup runs 7 days a week but we only see the BSOD about twice a month.I have run through drivers in my SBS 2011 install and all seem up to date to me.
