Re-join A Domain With New Workstation?

May 25, 2012

I'm helping a Dental Office get their current workstations upgraded. All workstations are complete and ready to swap out the old hardware, except i am worried that when the users go to log back into the domain from the new pc's, they won't be able to.

The previous IT guy said they are local profiles, located on each individual PC and not on the server? I thought setting up a Domain was so people could log in from any computer on the network?

High End Workstation Doesn't Work When Install Windows 7 64bit

May 11, 2011

I have the following workstation configuration :

PROCESSOR - Dual (two processors) - Xeon E5520 8M Cache, 2.26 GHz, 5.86 GT/s Intel QPI
MOTHERBOARD - Intel Workstation board S5520 SC
GRAPHICS CARD - Palit Nvidia GeForce GTX 275 (986 MB) Dual DVI out
RAM - DDR3 1333 MHz 6 GB (G-Skill)
MONITORS - 2 are connected (Samsung Sync Master 2233 & NEC Accusync LCD 224WXM)
CURRENT OPERATING SYSTEM - Windows XP 64 bit

The problem with the above configuration is that when I try to install Windows 7, the machine freezes (hangs) randomly, I have tried formatting and installing for at-least 4-5 times now but what happens is the setup doesn't work and stops during installation, last time the setup was successful but it hangs the workstation without any reason. I have also tried installing the same CD on other system and it works fine.

Allow Domain Users To Install Software Updates Without Being Admins?

Dec 6, 2011

I work in and oversee the computer network of a small architecture office. We only have 6 or 7 users right now, and about 12-14 active machines throughout the office. All machines connect through our office domain to our server box running Windows Server 2003 x86. Most production machines are now running Windows 7 x64, but there are a few XP x86 machines still left in the office. Everyone logs onto their machine using their username and password, which is set up in Active Directory Users and Computers on the server. Each username has a login script associated with it that maps various shared folders on the server as network drives on the workstations.

Right now, each user's workstation has that username set up as an Administrator account on that machine. I know that's not recommended, but it's been okay so far. However as time passes, I'm getting more and more concerned about network and computer security.

I'd like to know if there's a way to set up user accounts such that it won't ask for an Admin user name and password every time a program needs an update, but also doesn't allow them full access like Admins have, i.e. deleting software and such.

The issue is that I don't want to have to run around and enter an admin user name and password on the Windows 7 machines every time some software update appears or the user needs to install some software on a machine. We're a small office and don't rely on any actual IT department. I have many other responsibilities in the architecture field (working drawing production, project management, etc) and don't have time to always do that, especially when I'm out of the office on a jobsite, etc.

NT Workstation In VirtualBox Under Windows 7 X64 Ultimate

May 3, 2011

I was cleaning out some stuff in storage and ran across a Windows NT 4 Workstation CD (in original jacket). On a whim, I made an ISO of the CD and actually got it working under VirtualBox 4.0.6 running in Windows 7 x64 Ultimate w/SP1.

Windows NT 4 wouldn't recognize a 8GB virtual disk drive, so I made it 4GB with an assigned 1GB of ram and 32MB of video.

Total installation time was less than 15 minutes on a quad core w/8GB of ram.

The built in browser is Internet Explorer 2.0 It does require a valid CD-KEY to install NT Workstation 4, just in case you were wondering.

Remotely Install Windows Updates And Install Programs

Feb 13, 2013

I am part of a large organization that has a large amount of computers on our domain controller. I have Administrative rights to the computers only, and network access rights on our network. I keep a number of computers up to date, including various 3rd-party programs (i.e. java, flash, etc), and I currently manually remotely connect to each computer and install the updates to the programs from a network share, then run Windows update, select all the critical updates (as well as all the applicable optional updates), then disconnect and move on to the next one. Needless to say, time quickly adds up.

Join Windows 7 PC To 2 Domains?

Jan 26, 2011

How do I join my Windows 7 PC to 2 domains? We currently have our day to day domain as well as a dev domain. when trying to log back into the other domain I get an error message stating something along the lines of a security authentication problem with the workstation. i also changed the dns b/w the 2 so that it would work.

in theory, if i had a laptop and were traveling from my office to an offsite client where i would need a different login, would i have to go through the long route of bringing the pc on and off the domain every time?

Windows Cannot Join Homegroup On This Computer

Feb 6, 2011

I have 2 new Acer computers, both running Windows 7 Home Premium. I am attempting to share files on a homegroup for the first time.I can create a home group on either computer, but I get this message when try to join the newly created home group from other computer: "Windows cant join homegroup on this computer " In other words, both can create a homegroup, but whatever the one creates , the other cannot join. One important note is that one of the computers does not have the three network adapters the other has. It is missing a wifi adapter although it has a wifi port. Could this be part of the problem? Following are the 18 steps I have completed to date, all of which were redone by a "for fee" networking service except for resetting the router (I had already done this multiple times). These are not necessarily in the order I did them and I retried creating and joining a homegroup on both computers between each "fix." I checked the status and network map on both computers between steps to verify changes were registered correctly by both. Various corrections were made along the way, but none worked.

How To Turn On Workstation Over Internet

Apr 8, 2011

I can turn on a pc from another machine on the same home network, but can not from the Internet.I am doing this Wake-On-WAN experiment at home by using two machines each connected to the Internet through different ISP.The problem must be somewhere in the BIOS or the router setting for the machine to be turned on.I reviewed the BIOS and found the relevant option was enabled by default. As for the router(D-Link DIR 655), I set the portforwarding for the machine with a arbitrary port number(I picked 9) assigned. I did not see anything else relevant but I might have missed something. To send the magic packet, I am using depicus GUI. I also tried one at dslreports website. So far no luck yet. By using packet analysis utility of Wireshark, I could confirmed that the magic packet is hitting the router for the target PC but for some reason, the router does not forward the packet to the target PC's NIC. Instead, it broadcasts ARP to get the MACID of the NIC. Note that the magic packet contains the MAC ID and this is confirmed by intercepting this packet at the sending end PC.

Restrict Regular Users From Shutting Down Their Workstation?

Jul 25, 2012

I work in a domain environment administering a large number of workstations running Windows 7 enterprise. I want to restrict regular users from shutting down their PCs so that I can perform remote administrative tasks without walking out on the floor and ensuring all 300 + machines are actually turned on. I do not have rights to the domain controller so I cannot assign by group policy. I can use psexec or ntrights to remove shutdown options from explorer but users can still initiate the shutdown command via cmd and pressing the power button on the tower still invokes a shutdown. Note: I am not talking about a cold shutdown i.e holding the power button (I can't actually do anything about that). So is there a way (perhaps in the registry) to disable the shutdown command for all users except the local administrator? I'll need to do this to over 300 PCs so if it can be done via script of command line that would be best
