Re-join A Domain With New Workstation?
May 25, 2012
I'm helping a Dental Office get their current workstations upgraded. All workstations are complete and ready to swap out the old hardware, except i am worried that when the users go to log back into the domain from the new pc's, they won't be able to.
The previous IT guy said they are local profiles, located on each individual PC and not on the server? I thought setting up a Domain was so people could log in from any computer on the network?

I have done this all before. In addition to
HKLMSystemCCSServicesLanmanWorkstationParameters
DWORD DomainCompatibilityMode = 1
DWORD DNSNameResolutionRequired = 0
I am using Samba 3.5.8 and I am trying to join a Windows 7 64Bit laptop to my domain.
HP Pavillion dv6
Intel core i5 CPU M 520 @ 2.40GHz 2.40Ghz
4.00 GB RAM
However when I try join the domain i get the following message:"The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "MYDOMAIN"The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. If I do a nslookup it resolves the domain controller, as well if i watch the traffic I can only see UDP traffic on that IP, however i can still browse the web from it?

I think windows 7 is a total waste of time and money.More problems in windows 7 than even vista. windows 7 home premium can't be joined to a domain ,windows 7 professional can't keep domain profiles , etc.
Microsoft must backup before is too late

First of all i am running windows server 2008 R2 ( AC DC , DNS , DHCP ) and i am running another windows server 2008 r2 as a router ok .. so my other router server messed up so i had to reinstall it and i ddi btu whenever i try to join it to the domain i got error message >>>The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate an Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC) for domain "Anything.local":The error was: "DNS name does not exist."(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.Anything.local Common causes of this error include the following:- The DNS SRV records required to locate a AD DC for the domain are not registered in DNS. These records are registered with a DNS server automatically when a AD DC is added to a domain. They are updated by the AD DC at set intervals. This computer is configured to use DNS servers with the following IP addresses:
192.168.1.50
4.2.2.3
4.2.2.2
- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:
Anything.local

. (the root zone)
i deleted the DNS recorder and flushdns , no firewall , i sit the dns ip's?

I just made a custom Windows 7 computer image for my company with all the bells and whistles that I've learned from this site and the Microsoft security forums. However, I went to join it to the domain and I get the following message:"the following error occured when attempting to join the domain.....; the network location cannot be reached"-I am trying to add it to a server 2k3 domain-I can ping IP and FQDN of DC-can add other windows 7 machines to domain-can add XP machines with similar security settingsI firmly believe that it is a registry edit I have made or a gpedit that I made, I'm just really not sure which one and it seems like I tried changing all the major ones back

I get error 1068, but the network store interface service is started. I've tried to run sfc /scannow, but there are no problems there.I'm running win 7 64bit?

I can turn on a pc from another machine on the same home network, but can not from the Internet.I am doing this Wake-On-WAN experiment at home by using two machines each connected to the Internet through different ISP.The problem must be somewhere in the BIOS or the router setting for the machine to be turned on.I reviewed the BIOS and found the relevant option was enabled by default. As for the router(D-Link DIR 655), I set the portforwarding for the machine with a arbitrary port number(I picked 9) assigned. I did not see anything else relevant but I might have missed something. To send the magic packet, I am using depicus GUI. I also tried one at dslreports website. So far no luck yet. By using packet analysis utility of Wireshark, I could confirmed that the magic packet is hitting the router for the target PC but for some reason, the router does not forward the packet to the target PC's NIC. Instead, it broadcasts ARP to get the MACID of the NIC. Note that the magic packet contains the MAC ID and this is confirmed by intercepting this packet at the sending end PC.

I was cleaning out some stuff in storage and ran across a Windows NT 4 Workstation CD (in original jacket). On a whim, I made an ISO of the CD and actually got it working under VirtualBox 4.0.6 running in Windows 7 x64 Ultimate w/SP1.
Windows NT 4 wouldn't recognize a 8GB virtual disk drive, so I made it 4GB with an assigned 1GB of ram and 32MB of video.
Total installation time was less than 15 minutes on a quad core w/8GB of ram.
The built in browser is Internet Explorer 2.0 It does require a valid CD-KEY to install NT Workstation 4, just in case you were wondering.

I work in a domain environment administering a large number of workstations running Windows 7 enterprise. I want to restrict regular users from shutting down their PCs so that I can perform remote administrative tasks without walking out on the floor and ensuring all 300 + machines are actually turned on. I do not have rights to the domain controller so I cannot assign by group policy. I can use psexec or ntrights to remove shutdown options from explorer but users can still initiate the shutdown command via cmd and pressing the power button on the tower still invokes a shutdown. Note: I am not talking about a cold shutdown i.e holding the power button (I can't actually do anything about that). So is there a way (perhaps in the registry) to disable the shutdown command for all users except the local administrator? I'll need to do this to over 300 PCs so if it can be done via script of command line that would be best

I am trying to deliberately set a different date in my guest os to that of my host os. My host is Windows 7 (x64), my guest is XP (SP3), and my virtualization software is VMware Workstation (7). In an attempt to set this up I have done the following -
1). Added a line to the VMX file
2). Booted into and modified the BIOS settings of the guest XP os (setting the date back in time to the 08/08/2008) -
3). Disabled the guest XP os internet time synchronization settings -
When I first boot into the XP guest I see the following date - However after about 2 - 5 seconds the date is restored to that on the Host - how to set a different guest os date / time.

We have a Windows 7 Host running VMware Workstation with 5 virtual machines, One Windows server, 2 Windows 7 machines and 2 Windows XP machines. The host and non server VM's are fine, they run 100% of the time and never have problems, my SBS 2011 VM is another story. There have been nothing but crashe's over the past 6 months and they are fairly random.I beleive the server BSOD's and then it reboots, upon rebooting it just sits at a black loading windows screen forever until you completely power it off and then back on, at which time it boots up normally. The BSOD's happen ususaly around 12 AM when Windows server backup runs and creates a server backup on another server over the network, the backup runs 7 days a week but we only see the BSOD about twice a month.I have run through drivers in my SBS 2011 install and all seem up to date to me.

I have the following workstation configuration :
PROCESSOR - Dual (two processors) - Xeon E5520 8M Cache, 2.26 GHz, 5.86 GT/s Intel QPI
MOTHERBOARD - Intel Workstation board S5520 SC
GRAPHICS CARD - Palit Nvidia GeForce GTX 275 (986 MB) Dual DVI out
RAM - DDR3 1333 MHz 6 GB (G-Skill)
MONITORS - 2 are connected (Samsung Sync Master 2233 & NEC Accusync LCD 224WXM)
CURRENT OPERATING SYSTEM - Windows XP 64 bit
The problem with the above configuration is that when I try to install Windows 7, the machine freezes (hangs) randomly, I have tried formatting and installing for at-least 4-5 times now but what happens is the setup doesn't work and stops during installation, last time the setup was successful but it hangs the workstation without any reason. I have also tried installing the same CD on other system and it works fine.
