NT Workstation In VirtualBox Under Windows 7 X64 Ultimate
May 3, 2011
I was cleaning out some stuff in storage and ran across a Windows NT 4 Workstation CD (in original jacket). On a whim, I made an ISO of the CD and actually got it working under VirtualBox 4.0.6 running in Windows 7 x64 Ultimate w/SP1.
Windows NT 4 wouldn't recognize a 8GB virtual disk drive, so I made it 4GB with an assigned 1GB of ram and 32MB of video.
Total installation time was less than 15 minutes on a quad core w/8GB of ram.
The built in browser is Internet Explorer 2.0 It does require a valid CD-KEY to install NT Workstation 4, just in case you were wondering.

I have a couple of questions regarding the use of VirtualBox on win7 ultimate (64bit). I want to run WindowsXP (32 bit) as a guest so in regards to the installation/setup of the OS the following questions arise: 1a)Does VirtualBox "look" at the actual motherboard and peripherals, ie my gtx660 and asus p8z77-pro, or will it create generic video/mobo/audio/lan/wireless "hardware" for windowsXP to detect. If its "created" where/how do i get the drivers for this? 1b)Will running updates for WinXP (ie patches/hotfixes) or any of the other programs installs "mess" with how the virtualbox operates? 2a)In terms of creating the "storage" for the virtual OS. Should i have made a seperate partition exclusively for this virtual box? I have a 2TB HD which i have split into 1TB partitions when I installed win7. 2b)What happens when I end my guest session in virtualbox, after I install the OS and games? where does that data get saved? 3)I understand that when I run winXP through virtualbox, the ram I set aside in the setup will be unavail for my win7 to use (while i run virtualbox of course). I currently have 16 gigs or ram, should I just set the ram amt for winXP to the 4 gig max and leave 12 for Win7? or should i do some other amt? 4)Last, but most important, if i mess-up with the install of winXP or settings for the guest client, how much will it affect win7?

When running Kubuntu in Sun VirtualBox it disables Windows audio devices. Only way to re-enable audio seems to be reboot. When running Ubuntu, it's OK. No problems with Windows devices. Both Kubuntu and Ubuntu v. 9.04.
I like KDE more than Gnome, that's the reason for Kubuntu.
Any ideas?

I already have VirtualBox installed and I'm at the point where I need to get windows 7 installed on virtualbox. How the hell do I do this. Apparently I am missing something because dos says "Boot Fail" blah blah blah and that's as far as I am. Do I just make a boot disc and then use it some how? Do I need other software? Maybe some basic instruction on starting a new virtualbox session. I've tried looking for the boot.ini but I'm thinking it's hidden in dos.

One says "Send Information" and the other says "Cancel". There is no VMware workstation stuff on this system.

I installed VirtualBox yesterday, and now have decided I don't want Windows Virtual PC anymore. I want to have a virtual XP machine in VirtualBox instead. Is there any way to convert the XP Mode file provided by Microsoft to a format usable by Virtual Box?

Has anyone tried to install the new Ubuntu 9.10 with Sun VirtualBox on Windows 7 Professional. I had the previous version of Ubuntu working on the Sun VirtualBox but the new one doesn't. It just gets to a spot where it looks like i'm seeing the upper left hand corner of the screen magnified by %300 and in 8 colors.

I have an a6 3420m with 6520g graphics and I recently install windows 7 in virtualbox. However, I can't view it in fullscreen because it's using the generic drivers for the graphics. The best I can do is 1280x1024 even though my screen is 1600x900. I can't install the drivers off of the amd website because it can't detect my graphics hardware. This is my first time using virtualbox or anything like it.

I have the following workstation configuration :
PROCESSOR - Dual (two processors) - Xeon E5520 8M Cache, 2.26 GHz, 5.86 GT/s Intel QPI
MOTHERBOARD - Intel Workstation board S5520 SC
GRAPHICS CARD - Palit Nvidia GeForce GTX 275 (986 MB) Dual DVI out
RAM - DDR3 1333 MHz 6 GB (G-Skill)
MONITORS - 2 are connected (Samsung Sync Master 2233 & NEC Accusync LCD 224WXM)
CURRENT OPERATING SYSTEM - Windows XP 64 bit
The problem with the above configuration is that when I try to install Windows 7, the machine freezes (hangs) randomly, I have tried formatting and installing for at-least 4-5 times now but what happens is the setup doesn't work and stops during installation, last time the setup was successful but it hangs the workstation without any reason. I have also tried installing the same CD on other system and it works fine.

I can turn on a pc from another machine on the same home network, but can not from the Internet.I am doing this Wake-On-WAN experiment at home by using two machines each connected to the Internet through different ISP.The problem must be somewhere in the BIOS or the router setting for the machine to be turned on.I reviewed the BIOS and found the relevant option was enabled by default. As for the router(D-Link DIR 655), I set the portforwarding for the machine with a arbitrary port number(I picked 9) assigned. I did not see anything else relevant but I might have missed something. To send the magic packet, I am using depicus GUI. I also tried one at dslreports website. So far no luck yet. By using packet analysis utility of Wireshark, I could confirmed that the magic packet is hitting the router for the target PC but for some reason, the router does not forward the packet to the target PC's NIC. Instead, it broadcasts ARP to get the MACID of the NIC. Note that the magic packet contains the MAC ID and this is confirmed by intercepting this packet at the sending end PC.

I'm helping a Dental Office get their current workstations upgraded. All workstations are complete and ready to swap out the old hardware, except i am worried that when the users go to log back into the domain from the new pc's, they won't be able to.
The previous IT guy said they are local profiles, located on each individual PC and not on the server? I thought setting up a Domain was so people could log in from any computer on the network?

I work in a domain environment administering a large number of workstations running Windows 7 enterprise. I want to restrict regular users from shutting down their PCs so that I can perform remote administrative tasks without walking out on the floor and ensuring all 300 + machines are actually turned on. I do not have rights to the domain controller so I cannot assign by group policy. I can use psexec or ntrights to remove shutdown options from explorer but users can still initiate the shutdown command via cmd and pressing the power button on the tower still invokes a shutdown. Note: I am not talking about a cold shutdown i.e holding the power button (I can't actually do anything about that). So is there a way (perhaps in the registry) to disable the shutdown command for all users except the local administrator? I'll need to do this to over 300 PCs so if it can be done via script of command line that would be best

I am trying to deliberately set a different date in my guest os to that of my host os. My host is Windows 7 (x64), my guest is XP (SP3), and my virtualization software is VMware Workstation (7). In an attempt to set this up I have done the following -
1). Added a line to the VMX file
2). Booted into and modified the BIOS settings of the guest XP os (setting the date back in time to the 08/08/2008) -
3). Disabled the guest XP os internet time synchronization settings -
When I first boot into the XP guest I see the following date - However after about 2 - 5 seconds the date is restored to that on the Host - how to set a different guest os date / time.

We have a Windows 7 Host running VMware Workstation with 5 virtual machines, One Windows server, 2 Windows 7 machines and 2 Windows XP machines. The host and non server VM's are fine, they run 100% of the time and never have problems, my SBS 2011 VM is another story. There have been nothing but crashe's over the past 6 months and they are fairly random.I beleive the server BSOD's and then it reboots, upon rebooting it just sits at a black loading windows screen forever until you completely power it off and then back on, at which time it boots up normally. The BSOD's happen ususaly around 12 AM when Windows server backup runs and creates a server backup on another server over the network, the backup runs 7 days a week but we only see the BSOD about twice a month.I have run through drivers in my SBS 2011 install and all seem up to date to me.

I bought the full retail Win 7 Ultimate and trying to upgrade Windows Vista Ultimate to Win 7 Ultimate, both 32bit. I get to the Expanding Windows files to 21% and nothing. The program is still running and stuck at 21% but after waiting 3 hours I shut power off and Vista was reinstated. Why can't I get past 21% Expanding Windows files? I want to use the upgrade because I have a ton of programs on my Vista and don't want to spend days reinstalling them.
