I am using Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit I open Set program access and computer defaults (Start/defaults program/set program access and computer defaults), chose the custom and stick to change to the program I want to use. But when I close the window and open it again => nothing change I have try to turn off the UAC but still can not change in this function?What can I do to change it?
View 2 RepliesMain computer is the office computer. Its a desktop that a person is constantly on and doing stuff. There are 3 others that need the same information and documents at any given time. These 3 people have their laptops that are constantly switching wifi hotspots. They need to change information sometimes, and need access to all of it any time. The way its setup now is 1 person is on the main computer, but when one of the three need to access it, they remotely log in and take control. Only one person can access the computer at a time. How do I set it up so all four of these people can access and change the files at the same time if they want? The main computer is being used constantly, but someone always needs a document or file while the main person is working on it. So it slows production when someone logs in.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm desperately trying to change the sidebar gadget to open websites by default with Mozilla Firefox (in particular, the "Ask LEO" gadget).
Firefox is my default browser. If I double-click on a .url file saved on my system, it correctly opens Firefox, and so does clicking a link in MS Outlook. Again, Firefox is default, but that's not my problem.
Somewhere I found the advice to change the "Set program access and computer defaults" settings. So I tried, but every time I change something there, it doesn't keep the setting. I click on Custom => Default Web Browser => Mozilla Firefox, click OK, get some flashing on desktop, but next time I get there it's set back to "Use current browser" again.
Anyone got the same problem? I'm using the 7100 (x86) build, but a friend of mine tried the same on the final build (x64) and he got the same problem. It's reverting all the time. Re-installed Firefox, restarted, changed/tried/reset everything I can imagine.
Edit: It seems the problem is a Javascript-call "window.open" in the "Ask LEO" gadget. Someone knows why this call opens IE and every other call doesn't? And is there a workaround?
Edit2: With a dirty hack I solved the problem. Edited the gadget and replaced "window.open" by "System.Shell.execute". Still - I'd like to know why a) I can't change the default programs setting and b) why window.open ignores my default browser configuration.
I remember a while back I got a BSOD, but I fixed it by reformatting my C drive, this didn't remove my OS or touch anything on my D drive however. I would now like to do the same, not because I have a problem but because my computer is becoming sluggish and I haven't reformatted for a long time. However, searching up how to reformat the C drive, without removing this OS seems literally impossible, every post I see just says the following: get your OS disk. Despite this, I managed to get the C drive back to factory defaults while keeping the OS, all my drivers for my hardware (graphics card, sound card etc.) intact. I would like to do the same again, if it is actually possible. This was originally a box PC so I don't have any CDs except for the one for my new graphics card which I replaced a faulty one with.

In file associations it shows that .vob is linked to powerdvd. Is there a way so that when I doubleklick the dvd I want to play powerdvd is started.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop computer with Windows 7. This morning, every time I try to enter any program, I get a message which reads: Choose which program you want to open this file". This has never happened before. I tried going into Safe Mode, but the same message pops up when I attempt to open any program there as well. I tried scanning the computer with AVG, but am unable to because I get that same message. Is this some sort of virus? And what can I do to remove this message?
Also, I'm unable to go into regedit. I got a message which reads: File not found.
EDIT: I am able to access my programs in the Start menu. Now, I'm thinking that I might need to delete my shortcuts and replace them with new ones.

Without giving me the option to say do NOT make any changes--for each of the two dialog boxes, I said just close the program--the PCA popped up saying it had applied a compatibility fix! (In the past on older OS's under similar circumstances, I would simply reboot and things would be OK afterwards WITHOUT having my system changed.)

To be specific - as I'm not sure of the correct name - I'm talking about the pale blue color which appears behind "File Edit View History " on Firefox (and other programs), below the title header. It is used as the unselected tab background too.

I just reinstalled itunes but when it prompts me to change itunes to the default program to use for audio files, I click yes and nothing happens. It prompts me every time I open itunes. I went to control panel -> programs -> default programs -> set default programs and itunes wasn't there. I then went to ->associate a file type or protocol with a program but when I tried to change the default program for .mp3 the following happened:
- I double click .mp3
- I click browse
- Secondary Drive -> Itunes -> Itunes.exe
- I arrive at the screen that popped up after I double clicked .mp3 and itunes isn't on the list.
I tried going to a random .mp3 file and changing its default program but the same thing happened. I googled what to do and I looked for a software that would change the default program for filetypes and I used both. They didn't work. I tried the following:
a. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
b. Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionpoliciesExplorer
c. In the right side of the screen double click on "NoFileAssociate".
d. Change the value of "NoFileAssociate" from 1 to 0. If the value is not present, create a DWORD value and enter the valaue data as 0.
e. Exit Registry Editor and Restart the computer and check.
But I didn't seem to have the nofileassociate part in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionpoliciesExplorer
My itunes and safari icons have both changed to a completely unrecognisable icon. I cannot run either of this programs on my computer. I have tried reinstalling but this didnt work.
View 5 Replies View RelatedOn my W7 machine (Dell X1) everything is working fine. I want to upgrade the BIOS so I downloaded the exe to do so. When I attempt to run it I get "Program Access Denied" no matter whether I run it normally or as administrator. Since my account is an administrator account it shouldn't matter. I've tried using the cmd window, but that doesn't do it either - always the same message. I've checked that the permissions on the file should allow it.

I used System Restore, didn't like what it did, so I undid the restore. But now ANY program I try to run that isn't part of windows says "(program) can not run because LPK.dll is missing." Something along those lines.Now I've read up on lpk.dll so I tried replacing the file with a newly downloaded one. Guess what? Need permission even though I'm the highest in admin rights. So I tried safe mode with command prompt. Guess what? Access is denied. I CAN NOT replace lpk.dll. Secondly, as I said, NO programs work. So if I try to use a program to fix the problem automatically, it doesn't work because of lpk.dll. If I try to use a program to stop the access is denied stuff, it doesn't work. I need a way I can FORCE the system into replacing the file. Otherwise there's no way I will ever be able to use my computer again (besides reinstalling the OS).

I am slowly transferring from XP on an old PC to Windows 7 Pro. on a new one. The new one has a small solid state drive (SSD) for OS and programs and a large disk for data. Today I ran a Win 7 system restore to get back to a clean situation and found that the desktop had been re-set to default values. Several icons have gone, the mouse is double click instead of single, and so on. An icon-restore program has gone (but is still in the Download folder). And now, every time I re-boot I get a message that a temporary profile has been loaded - and to get back to 'my' desktop I must log off and re-boot. Which does nothing, apart from removing the gadgets and resetting everything to default again.Yes, I know I shouldn't be using System Restore with an SSD, but that is not because of any software restriction it is to stop the SSD wearing out. and is only a temporary measure whilst I load software.
