View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Inspiron 545s Desktop - Intel Duo Core 2.93, 6gb RAM, 720gb HD, 64bit Windows 7
I get the message: (every time I try and open a folder on my c/drive - Can't access Windows Explorer folder on the taskbar and any other folder or file by double clicking it. I can open them by right clicking, then open)
"this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a progra or, if one is already installed, create an assocation in the Default Programs control Panel".
I can open applications. But, I can not open the folder for them lets say in c:/program files -- the only way to open them is by rightclicking, then open. If I double click, I get the above error message. (same issue with "my documents", "My pictures", etc).
Included with the above problems: I now, can not access User Accounts. When I go into Control Panel, click User Accounts.. I can not manage existing ones, nor can I "Add or remove user accounts". I click the link and nothing happens.
I have someething built into the computer called "Dell DataSafe Backup". Its a recovery partition/part of the HDD that saves all my files for a recovery. However, I can NOT access it. I click the "Dell DataSafe" in my taskbar and nothing happens..
i kept security to c drive now i cant change it
View 1 Replies View Relatedi have my (main) desktop hooked up with mapped folders which my two other computers (laptop wireless and wired and desktop wired) can access and do what i intended them to with sharing restrictions, etc. However, my 2nd laptop that after a struggle connecting it to the homegroup will not allow access to any mapper folders keeps popping up with a login screen for THAT laptop, and my others will not connect to it properly.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've noticed that I have two program files. One just states Program Files and the other Program Files (X86). I believe that the one with (x86) pertains to the Win7 64 Bit however, is the other program file necessary? Since I have Win7 Ultimate 64 Bit don't you think that all files and folders should go to it?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm new to WIN 7 and I keep seeing references to the Folder "Program Data" and/or"ProgData" in the C: drive . I can't find this folder and I'm sure I've got all folders selected as being visible.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have 2 program folders listed as x86 on my 64 bit machine. This 2nd x86 program folder contains games that were downloaded and installed from Big Fish games (and those are the only programs that ever go into that 2nd x86 folder).
Other info (that may be important?): I recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. This 2nd 86x program folder was also on my Vista install. I upgraded using the method here to create the windows .old folder process... and that 2nd 86x folder installed into my C drive automatically. (I also used the HP upgrade assistant as directed by HP.
It really drives me crazy that I don't know why I have 2 of these folders. Doesn't seem to cause any issues at all, but wanted to get advice/opinion as to why I have 2 of these and if I'll ever run into issues because of it.
There is a program on the desktop that I want to run, but when I try to run it [winzip self-extractor] I get an error message saying "cannot run setup.exe" and when I try to delete it I get "action cannot be completed because the file is open in itself [??!!] or sometimes it says it's open in another program; it has never been opened before. This program worked fine in Win7 on another machine and Vista and XP before that.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop computer with Windows 7. This morning, every time I try to enter any program, I get a message which reads: Choose which program you want to open this file". This has never happened before. I tried going into Safe Mode, but the same message pops up when I attempt to open any program there as well. I tried scanning the computer with AVG, but am unable to because I get that same message. Is this some sort of virus? And what can I do to remove this message?
Also, I'm unable to go into regedit. I got a message which reads: File not found.
EDIT: I am able to access my programs in the Start menu. Now, I'm thinking that I might need to delete my shortcuts and replace them with new ones.
where is it it used to be in xp whereever i cant remember that either ,
but on a more serious note inside win 7 64 bit where is the start programs menu folder
i cant find it and have just done a fresh install and need to get my start menu / programs sorted
I tried placing one of my favorite programs in the Startup folder but every time it starts it prompts for UAC confirmation. Annoying. Is there a way to get rid of this?(without disabling UAC. at the moment I work around this by completely turning off UAC but I feel nervous about this).
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows program that is installed in the default C:Program Files (x86) folder, and of course it cannot write some of the data it needs to write to that folder. I assume that is because of the Windows 7 permissions. Is there a simple way to allow this particular program to write to its install folder despite permission restrictions? I already moved its data folder to my data partition but this is for some files that I do not have the option to move to another folder.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThis bug been going on for a while, on my Windows 7 64bit. When I am done downloading anything through torrent (and no, I am talking legit files here), I can't move them to anywhere else, when I chose to cut them out and paste in new location it says it can't move the folder/file because it is open in another program. Only solution I found is to kill and restart explorer.exe, but program comes back after just a couple of minutes. Even if torrent program is closed as well.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI noticed that there were 2 program files folders. After installing a few programs, I noticed they were all going to X86 folder, so I thought this was an install error on the shipping companies part, and deleted the unnumbered program files folder. Is there a way to fix my messup ? will it affect performance ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedSometimes when I want to move a folder, I receive the following message:
"The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program..."
This is frequently caused by a Thumbs.db file, which I believe generates thumbnail images. Is there a way to prevent Windows from locking these files, so they can be moved, without disabling thumbnails completely as explained above?
I'm soon to be installing RC1, and I was thinking of abandoning my raid array and using the two discs thus:
Disc 1 ( ; system and page file
Disc 2 ; Programmes
I had my other discs organised thus:
Disc 3 ; my user's disc
Disc 4 ; My partner's users disc
Disc 5 ; storage / backup / and music stuff.
My question is this, how does one change the location of the programs folder so that it would read:
D:programs instead of C:programs?
I read somewhere how you can choose the default program to open a folder with, but now I cannot find it again, and I also cannot find how to do this.
I had done it and changed the default file manager, but I want to reverse the change. I can't get to a window or dialog box that lets me change the file types windows displays, or that lets me edit the default program when I click on a folder icon.
I had a virus, which I deleted with Spybot S&D and Eset Nod32 antivirus (it may not have been removed completely). For now the infected PC is not connected to the internet.
I found the virus and started scan by looking into msconfig. I saw two objects:
element: _scott_-{97BAE4-4CF2-5FFC-B9DB 1D 1D324E}
localisation: C:UsersMikakaAppDataRoaming\_scott_css.exe
element: _scott_vrc
localisation: C:Program Files\_scott_svchost.exe
The program files folder is hidden by the virus, you go to C: and it is not there. What can I do about it?? Its not hidden through the standard windows hidden files (I have showing of hidden files enabled, and I still cannot see it).
I tried combofix but it doesn't work for OS higher then XP, how can I restore my Program Files folder??
The Program Files is still there (programs that are installed there are working, and you can find things there through search in start menu, but you cannot see the folder itself).
Here is a screenshot of my C: drive

Since installing Windows 7 Pro I've had odd issues with the default Downloads folder. Long story, but I've had three or four different Downloads folders - under the user profile, on the desktop, in the root folder...
The one I'd been using was located at C:usersCarsonDownloads. To test something (the behavior of Firefox) I deleted that folder. I ran Firefox and downloaded something and it re-created the folder in the same location.
But... Now I can't access the folder. When I access the folder properties and the owner, it tells me 'Unable to display current owner'. I can't delete it, can't change permissions. How can I get control of the folder again?
(Yes, I know I can download into any folder I like. Many applications, such as browsers, use the default downloads folder location, so it's a lot simpler to just use it and not define another.)
I have recently migrated to window7 from XP via clean install. Touch wood I was up and running in less than 40 mins. I am still finding my way in the world of Windows 7. I need to copy my outlook files (pst) to new installed MS office on Windows 7. Despite with admin privileges and ownership I cannot access outlook folder on Windows 7 to copy the files.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 7 Professional x64.My pictures are located in this folder: L:Users<name>My Pictures
I want to share this folder with another user on my computer. Can't do it.
Simply altering the folder's permissions doesn't work. If I change permissions so that the folder in question does not inherit any permissions from parent folders, and instead allow my user read-only access to the folder...access denied.
Alright then, I tried to share the folder with my user. Although sharing usually means sharing with other computers on a network, it also applies to other users on the same machine. But the user can't access the shared folder...access denied.
I could move the folder in question to the Public user, but then everyone can see it. Holy cow...what does it take to share a folder with another user on the same computer?
I have 7 on both my laptop and tower PC, I share my entire D drive from my tower over the network (homegroup)... i like to keep a mirrored copy of the drive, so I can copy everything from the D drive to the laptop.Absolutely everything copied EXCEPT one folder. I have no idea why this folder will not copy... windows just says "you do not have permission to access"I've done this plenty of times before, never changed the attributes of the folder or anything. I recently formatted both of the systems so everything is nice and clean, no system problems or anything.
I tried moving the folder to another location on the D drive but it's still says I do not have permission... I try just sharing that particular folder, full control, but it sill says no permission. However, I've copied a few of the sub-folders to another location, and I CAN access them. So it must have something to do just with that folder
I'm new to the forum, just signed up.I have a few questions about installing software on 64-bit.I am running windows 7 ultimate 64-bit and noticed some thing. Some of the software are installed in the program file (x86) folder, some of them in the program files folder by default.I made sure that i found and install 64-bit compliant software.
1. Why are 64-bit apps being installed in the (x86) program files folder when they are in fact 32/64-bit versions?
2. When i get prompted to choose the destination folder, can i manually select the program files folder and will it change or compromise windows?
I have a problem with the C:Programs Files and C:Program Files (x86) folders under Windows 7 RC 64bit:
these folder have the read-only attribute set on and I can't unset it.
Whenever I tried to unset this attribuite even if Windows 7 seems to comply the folders actually remain in the read-only mode.
Is there a way to unset this attribute?
I need to do that at least for a subfolder, since this contains a program which modifies files every time you open it.
