Access NTFS Volume From Another Computer?
Mar 23, 2011
I put a new hard drive in my ThinkPad T500 and installed Windows 7. I put the old hard drive, which has Vista installed into an external USB box. I can mount the drive, but there are some folders that I can't access. I also cannot seem to give "Everyone" access, or to take ownership. Is there some simple way to override the NTFS security settings?

Setup mb asus p6t6 ich10r (raid controller) 2 x vertex 30GB 2 x seagate 1.5TB in ( motherboards controller fakeraid ) raid 0 array Volume1 = 1 GPT partition with 1 windows dynamic simple volume ntfs formated (just 1 big ~3TB partition for storage created on a previous install of Windows 7)
Reinstall Window 7 on a vertex
Problem: After reinstall the raid array is not recognized by Windows 7 it asks me to initialize the disk (which is a raid volume). I say yes, then asks to create MBR or GPT i say GPT. But then it says the disk is unallocated and wants me to create a new dynamic volume, i say simple volume. But now is asking to format... and here i stopped, with out formating to new ntfs.
Questions: Is there a way to recuperate / restore / reinstate / recover / rescue / rebuild .... the old dynamic ntfs simple volume ? So that i could access the data without having to use a data recuperation program for 3TB of data.
Will a quick ntfs format and a scan-disk make that possible?

I have a triple boot system: XP 32 bit, XP 64 bit, Win7 Pro 64 bit, each on a separate partition on separate hard drives. I can backup each of the XP OS partitions with a program I wrote that basically does a file and folder copy to a folder in a spare partition on one of the hard drives. The copy program I wrote tries to preserve time stamp and short file name info, otherwise, it's just a file and folder copy program. I use windiff to verify after a backup (or restore). For a restore, I can quick format a partition and copy the files back (using the program I wrote).
I tried doing the same with the Win 7 OS partition, backup, quick format, restore, but some of the information (metadata?) is lost. All of the actual data is there, and windiff doesn't show any differences, and Win 7 boots up, but then there are issues. ATI video driver catalyst control center fails to run (don't recall error message). The publisher information for many (or most or all) of the programs is lost, causing User Acess Control dialog box to appear anytime I tried to run a program, which should be Microsoft, but shows up as unknown. Internet Explorer 8 will state that a program has corrupted the default search provider repeatedly (even after selecting one).
So something is different between Win 7 NTFS and Win XP NTFS, or I need to enhance my copy program to copy addtional file information when doing the copies. If I get the time, I'll try a drag and drop from windows explorer in XP to see if that makes any difference. So currently I'm stuck using Win 7 system image backup for the Win 7 OS partition (it also images the C partition which contains the boot files like bootmgr).

Part of my job involves taking images of many different computers using Norton Ghost and saving them to external drives. One of these drives is a Western Digital MyPassport that is soon being re-purposed. When taking one of the images with this drive I accidentally clicked on the System Volume Information folder and, while I caught my error this time, saw that there were 2 other ghost files already saved in that location. I would like to pull these off of this drive and transfer them to one that will still be in use for storing images, but can't gain access to the System Volume Information folder outside of Ghost to do so, and the steps to access the folder on my computer don't seem to work for the drive (show hidden files and folders is selected, hide protected operating system files is unchecked, and system restore is turned off for the drive).

I've had my computer for a few months now and for some reason the volume stopped being loud. It's not just a "little off." It's really quiet. I can barely hear the frickin thing.
I've tried everything (all the obvious things a relatively computer-savvy person would try) I can't understand it. Below are some relevant photos.Picture of the volume controls. Why are those boxes next to the volume sources? Also, the green bar is as loud as it gets. No joke. Unless I use VLC to pump up the sound, this is as loud as it gets from normal playback of media....

I am am running Windows 7 64, and my C drive was 150GB, and the other drive was 450GB. I decided to extend or expand it by deleting one of the volumes. However, I have come across a speed bump while doing this. After deleting my unused partition which was 450GB, and right clicked on the C drive to extend, but the extend option is greyed out. The shrink volume seems to be clickable though.

I received an unmountable boot volume error when starting up my computer last night and came to the conclusion that my 120gb ssd which contained the windows installation has failed.I still have my 1tb hardrive however, if I buy another harddrive or another ssd, will my computer work normally if I install windows with my recovery disk on the new hdd or ssd? Also, is it as simple as placing the new drive in and then installing a copy of windows on it or do I have to do some other steps prior to that?

so i have a blue yeti, and i'm an online animator/voice actor. whenever i record audio on my blue yeti (or any other mic) i record about 4-6 inches from the mic, and turn the gain down enough that the audio doesn't peak as i yell or whatever. this is what you're supposed to do if you don't want your audio levels peaking and making your recording sound horrible and corrupted. however, afterwards, it means i have really quite recordings. not a problem right? now that it's recorded right, i can boost the volume of the entire clip afterwards right? wrong. i'm not an audio expert so i must be missing something. but why in gods name would the audio distort and peak after it's recorded successfully? it's all there, it's all clean audio. if i turn the volume on my speakers all the way up it sounds crystal clear! all i want to do is do that inside the computer so that when i upload it to Internet people don't have to turn their speakers so far up. but if i increase the clips volume in the computer, it distorts! it sounds awful! why?! i tried in sony acid and audacity and they both do the same thing! i can take sound effects, and recordings made by other producers and crank them up nice and loud, but mine just fall apart!

I just received a new keyboard today: Thermaltake Challenger Ultimate. I went from a Logitech G15.
First thing I did was connect the keyboard and install the software that came along on the CD, it probably also installed the correct drivers. First after this did I uninstall the software and drivers from the old Logitech G15. But before that, and now after, the volume buttons on my new keyboard is still not adjusting the volume when I press them.
A speaker-icon like this shows up when I press the volume buttons, so its not that the keys are not working: (ignore the text behind it, its me writing an assignment)

I've got a total of six computers on my network - 2 running Windows 7 and 4 running XP. With the exception of one computer, all of the machines see each other on the network and can share files. One XP machine does not see the shared folders of my new Win 7 machine but does list it as a "workgroup" computer. When I try to access the computer itself I am prompted for a password. Passwords are turned off on the Win 7 machine and none of the other computers on the network get prompted for passwords to access this computer. I assumed that it was due to the setting on the Win 7 machine but they are all set for sharing with everyone on the network. Passwords are off. Firewall is off as well. The network name is consistent across all the machines. I've been unable to find any information on why just one computer on the network would be prompted for a password to access another computer on the network.

I have 4 computers. Two with Windows 7 and Two with XP Pro. My XP machines can access all the others including the Windows 7's. One of my Windows 7 computers can access all but one of the XP machines. All computer workgroups are the same and all the names are correct. Any ideas why one of my Windows 7 machines can't access one of my XP machines? All are hardwired thru a router, not wireless.

I have a second hard drive that is formatted FAT32 and I need to reformat it to NTFS so I can install Windows XP as a dual boot option. It shows 146GB of 148GB free space; however, when I open the drive it says "This folder is empty". I once had Ubuntu installed and reformatted the drive, but it may be hidden somewhere on the drive. I have tried to reformat by right clicking the drive letter and using the format command, but I get an error message "Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure no window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.". When I check the drive for contents using CMD it says "Volume in drive is New Volume Directory of D: File Not Found". When I try to format D: from the C: prompt, it says "Access Denied as you do not have sufficient privileges. You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode." I am logged on as Administrator
