i have on my desktop a 0 kb file with no extension (.exe etc) yes none ..when i try to delete it it says file cannot be found... i restart the comp and its still there... any idea on how to get rid of it
View 3 RepliesI just bought this new ASUS laptop and it's amazing. It runs a Windows Vista Home Permium 64-bit version. However, one problem I am facing since the first time I opened the laptop is that files don't appear on the desktop. They are there because I tried to copy a file twice to the desktop and I was told that there is already a file. I tried to look for posts here but couldn't find anything that went through the same issue. Sometimes when the laptop first loads the files on the desktop appear but only for several seconds and then they go away again. Does any1 know a solution to the problem ?

She has been using the computer to store school-related documents; class notes, chapter reviews, etc. She turned the computer on this morning, and all of her desktop folders with the school-related documents were gone. I searched for the files and found them in her C drive, under her username and AppData. No matter what I do, I can't seem to pull those files out or view them. I tried ShadowExplorer and that did not
What I think happened is that in switching between two networks (one at home and one at school) her desktop files were relocated from her C drive to the school network. I don't know how that happened or if that is even possible. She often does not shutdown her computer when she leaves school. So, as I have seen in the past, her Dell cannot connect to the school network, but no errors come up as she edits documents and saves those changes. Is there anything I'm missing here? Could there be a simpler solution? Could some files have been corrupted and are those files lost for good?
I have googled this to death and I have also search here and I have not found an answer. I am ready to migrate to Windows 7 and I am trying to move my wife's desktop items to another folder on another drive but I am finding this simple task annoying and impossible since all it wants to do is place shortcuts on the target folder.
I am trying to do this as an Administrator but no matter what I try, I get the same results. I am sure there is a simpler way to go about doing this but... I am also sure I can't find it!

View 6 Replies View RelatedRecently I've noticed that when I right click on certain files or the desktop, that it would load the context menu after about 1 second. I know this isn't much but it should not take that long for something that small. I went ahead and removed many items from the context menu and the desktop and all other files load the context menu almost instantly. My problem is that .exe files still take 1-2 seconds to load their context menu. I tried removing almost ALL the options in the context menu.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A305-S6843 and since last thursday my computer freezes when it enters the desktop.
Anything I don wont work, the mouse moves, but I cant do anything, and the HD appears to be working nonstop. The cursor only shows the blue circle indicating activity.
In safe mode (with or without networking), it works fine, I have ran many antiviruses in safe mode, but when I restart the computer it freezes again.
It never happened before, and I never updated for SP1, it came that way when I bought it. It has never presented this issue before, and I dont recall installing anything software or hardware. It just suddenly happened.
I just installed some new internet protection software and after the installation was complete is disabled my ability to have a desktop backround. When I go to the change desktop backround icon in the control panel, it says that "this feature has been disabled, talk to computer adminastrator" Since I am the adminastrator I can't seem to find how to enable this feature again.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy computer was infected with Vista Guardian 2010 two days ago. I first ran a full scan using McAfee but didn't detect anything. Following a friend's advice, I then ran Windows Update on the system. After restarting, I lost my desktop, only a small window saying "Personalizing the personal setting of your Internet Explorer" and it stayed there for ever. I managed to get online through Task Manager by hiting ctrl+alt+del. Then I downloaded Microsoft Security Essential and it found two malwares.
I clicked "Remove Now" to the first one and my desktop came back. So when the second message prompted me to "Restart Now", I restared my computer while the scanning was still running. After restarting, everything was fine except a bit slower than before. But when I tried to open any .exe file (like IE browser, Firefox browser, MS Security Essential), none of them would open. The system keeps asking me which software I want to use to open the file, and still wouldn't open. I cannot open any browsers and cannot get online now. What should I do? (I tried in Safemode, and didn't work either).
I can't get it to work. I tried running as administrator and no luck. I have a Asus G2 series gaming laptop-OS Vista Home premium 32 bit. The game installed great, but as soon as I click on the shortcut from the desktop it will flicker a black screen and just return me to my desktop. I tried putting my computer in a 800x600 resolustion and still didn't start it.

Each time I restart there is a lenghty message in Chinese with "ok" as the only option. I ran system restore to get back to the time just before this update, which restored my desktop. I am convinced that this update is buggy and should not be installed without a deep backup in place. It works fine with XP but not with Vista in my set of machines. How can this be reported to Microsoft? Or am I doing something wrong? The system is completely legal and registered.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to play Age of Empires on Windows Vista. I can load and play the game, but sometimes (Almost always) the entire computer will freeze. I cannot even get back to my desktop using key strokes. I have to hold down the power button to shut the computer down. WHen I re-boot the computer the screen resolution is all messed up because it is still set to the low AOE II screen resolution settings. Is there anything I can do to stop making the computer freeze?
