I just installed some new internet protection software and after the installation was complete is disabled my ability to have a desktop backround. When I go to the change desktop backround icon in the control panel, it says that "this feature has been disabled, talk to computer adminastrator" Since I am the adminastrator I can't seem to find how to enable this feature again.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A305-S6843 and since last thursday my computer freezes when it enters the desktop.
Anything I don wont work, the mouse moves, but I cant do anything, and the HD appears to be working nonstop. The cursor only shows the blue circle indicating activity.
In safe mode (with or without networking), it works fine, I have ran many antiviruses in safe mode, but when I restart the computer it freezes again.
It never happened before, and I never updated for SP1, it came that way when I bought it. It has never presented this issue before, and I dont recall installing anything software or hardware. It just suddenly happened.
My computer was infected with Vista Guardian 2010 two days ago. I first ran a full scan using McAfee but didn't detect anything. Following a friend's advice, I then ran Windows Update on the system. After restarting, I lost my desktop, only a small window saying "Personalizing the personal setting of your Internet Explorer" and it stayed there for ever. I managed to get online through Task Manager by hiting ctrl+alt+del. Then I downloaded Microsoft Security Essential and it found two malwares.
I clicked "Remove Now" to the first one and my desktop came back. So when the second message prompted me to "Restart Now", I restared my computer while the scanning was still running. After restarting, everything was fine except a bit slower than before. But when I tried to open any .exe file (like IE browser, Firefox browser, MS Security Essential), none of them would open. The system keeps asking me which software I want to use to open the file, and still wouldn't open. I cannot open any browsers and cannot get online now. What should I do? (I tried in Safemode, and didn't work either).
i have on my desktop a 0 kb file with no extension (.exe etc) yes none ..when i try to delete it it says file cannot be found... i restart the comp and its still there... any idea on how to get rid of it

The game installed great, but as soon as I click on the shortcut from the desktop it will flicker a black screen and just return me to my desktop. Each time I restart there is a lenghty message in Chinese with "ok" as the only option. I ran system restore to get back to the time just before this update, which restored my desktop. I am convinced that this update is buggy and should not be installed without a deep backup in place. It works fine with XP but not with Vista in my set of machines. How can this be reported to Microsoft? Or am I doing something wrong? The system is completely legal and registered.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to play Age of Empires on Windows Vista. I can load and play the game, but sometimes (Almost always) the entire computer will freeze. I cannot even get back to my desktop using key strokes. I have to hold down the power button to shut the computer down. WHen I re-boot the computer the screen resolution is all messed up because it is still set to the low AOE II screen resolution settings. Is there anything I can do to stop making the computer freeze?

View 9 Replies View RelatedSo today I'm enjoying my 2 day old Vista. I've had a crappy 2003 Compaq XP for EVER now, and I was happy to get a new computer, completely crappy OS or not. (Yes, I've heard the rumors about Vista, so I was prepared for lots and lots of hours of troubleshooting!) I want to look around and explore, so I click on my start menu. Nothing. The My Computer, Control Panel, etc etc etc is on there. But nothing. I click 'all programs', and it's all there. I tried to modify the settings on my start menu, I pressed OK and out of curiosity went back into my Start Menu settings to check-- And they were back to what they were before!!
My easy way out has always been, since my XP was crap, to completely restore my computer, suck it up, reinstall everything and start fresh. So I decided to add a new WinRAR .rar folder thing, put all my pictures in there, put it on Megaupload.com and download the file after I restore Vista. I right clicked. Went under 'New > (Empty)'.
I almost cried! My baby, my brand new vista, already encountering problems! I installed daemon tools, PHotoshop CS2, poweriso, AIM, itunes, basically my necessities, within the two day period. I turned my computer on, no problems. My norton preformed its scheduled scan this morning at 6am, and I had a trojan horse and it can't be repaired. I've had thousands of those on my old computer and it ran at full speed with no problems, but could this be the reason? I restarted it two, three hours ago so my daemon tools can finish installing, and that's when I realized my start menu and things were messed up. Also, when I went into my computer after I restarted, the theme was set on 'windows classic', my background was left untouched. I cannot drag and drop anything into the start menu. It says I can, but I can't. Desktop icons are fine. I also installed 16 or so updates because I guess my Vista isn't up to date-- It did it automatically. Also, links, pictures, etc, like 'My Computer', My 'C:' drive, 'My Pictures', pictures, music, etc in Folders, have a check mark beside them.
I just cleared my desktop because it was absolutely cluttered with icons and stuff, but now it's like the Icons are part of the wallpaper, because I can't click on them, can't drag them, and if I drag a different icon over it it's still there underneath the other one.

when they are both connected (wirelessly) via the same network.
I don't find the desktop to be of much use, too many icons take away from the image I choose to display, but I do use the desktop toolbar from the taskbar quite a bit. There are icons that I cannot remove from the desktop toolbar such as the Network & Control Panel icons they won’t leave the toolbar, and I can’t seem to kill the IE icon off for good, either.

The programs work fine... I tried choosing a picture and setting it to a desktop background. Still nothing. I terminated explorer.exe, The desktop background appeared. but since i terminated it, the taskbar and icons are gone. I Can't right click on the desktop, and when i move the cursor inside it, it's still "loading" for ever.

Check to see if the disc is full.I have over 180 GB free space left. To get things to the desktop i can drag it into the tab section next to the start icon, and then drag onto desktop.But when i do this i am always required to give permission and it creates two desktop icons.i have been having problems with my catalyst control centre but i dont think they are related.
