Click On The Shortcut From The Desktop It Will Flicker A Black Screen And Just Return To Desktop
Apr 3, 2009
I can't get it to work. I tried running as administrator and no luck. I have a Asus G2 series gaming laptop-OS Vista Home premium 32 bit. The game installed great, but as soon as I click on the shortcut from the desktop it will flicker a black screen and just return me to my desktop. I tried putting my computer in a 800x600 resolustion and still didn't start it.
I know there have been several posts about this but can't seem to figure out some of the answers.
I have lost, for some reason, the Create a Desktop Short cut from my right click context menu.
I tried one thing and all I got was the Desktop icon on my Desktop. I did more searching but can NOT find: "the file *Desktop (create shortcut)* from the Default user folder."
I went to my User folder and there is no such item. Am I looking in the wrong area?
Steam Game UI Error video by dyrnwyn_images - Photobucket. This video shows a problem I've been having...along with the occasional minimizing of games launched or owned by Steam. It does not happen with non steam games. And after minimizing, the overlay flicker goes away. I would really like to know wtf is going on here. Latest drivers...vista 64, no viruses, SLI 285 GTX.
i have a problem when vista is booting up past the loading bar screen sometimes not always the system kinda hangs when about to boot into desktop?, a mouse pointer appears and the screen is black for about 30-45 seconds then the vista circle icon appears then desktop loads? is this a known problem or just my system?
Has anyone else experienced the problem of an active connection REMOTE DESKTOP window going black without any error message? I suspect this may happen when someone on the host computer interrupts the connection, but there may be other reasons also. The problem is that we do not receive any error message indicated the nature of the disruption?
I have just installed Quake 4 on Vista 64 Ultimate with the latest 1.4.2 patch. When i go into single player mode the game will just sit there with a black screen and then quit to my desktop with a little pop up on my start menu saying "the video driver has stopped responding". Last time i played this on Vista i was able to play single player no problem, but it would still do the same, but during game play. So i thought i install it again and give it another try, but it still does the same thing. Also i'm running the latest beta 169.09 drivers with a 8800gtx.
how the broken system acts. When I turn the computer on (it's an HP pavillion DV2000 laptop) it first shows the black screen with the little bar that says MICROSOFT CORPORATION near the bottom of the screen. Then it transitions to the Vista screen that says WELCOME , then the message changes to PREPARING YOUR DESKTOP. These phases take about as long as usual, and the hard drive LED shows a lot of hard drive activity. Finally the Vista logon screen is displayed. I type in my password and the screen changes to my usual desktop color but there is nothing displayed except the mouse pointer.
There is nothing to click, nothing to do. Ctrl+Alt+Del gives the usual menu for LOGOFF, Task Manager, etc. Task Manager shows about 20 processes and the CPU is 96% idle. It shows many services - some of them stopped. Starting in SAFE mode ends up in the same situation. I can't start from a Vista CD because I never got one with this machine - I have only the recovery partition for reloading the original software. So I can't get to recovery console...............
Since installing IE8 RTM in Vista SP1 x86 I've been having some problems with internet shortcut icons not displaying correctly on my desktop. I've tried deleting and redoing them, tried using AM Deadlink to refresh my Favourites icons to no avail. They show normally in Favourites but show as a smaller version within a white frame on the desktop. This doesn't seem to effect all of them, just some.
I've attached two thumbnails to illustrate what I mean. The first one is the Canada Post item in Favourites and the second one is the same shortcut on the desktop. As you can see there there's another one doing the same thing for Newegg.ca. I think I am right in saying that it's not a case of rebuilding the system icon cache as that only effects system icons, am I right? FYI desktop resolution is 1680 x 1050 and I have the desktop icon size set to Classic.
How do I delete a desktop icon. Windows says that it can not find the file and will not delete it. I removed the program the way I should but it left the shortcut on the desktop and will not let me delete or move it. I've tried to change the properties , added sharing, and everything I can think of to remove the shortcut with no luck.
I right click on the desktop, open the menu and pick new then folder and it works fine. I right click on the desktop, open the menu and pick new then shortcut and nothing happens. I restarted the computer but it is still the same.
In Outlook and Outlook Express I put a shortcut on my desk that would open a new email message window. In Windows Mail on Vista I haven't yet figured out how to do that. Basically, I want to click on the shortcut, have it open a new message window where I can type my message, just like I would do if I had Windows Mail up and running.
I have always had two Search options under Vista. If I click on the Start button, there is a box at the bottom of the screen where I can enter a term and search. That option has never been very helpful. However, there was previously another Search option after I clicked on Start. It was among the list on the right side that includes Control Panel, Default Programs, Help and Support, etc. Using that option, I could enter locations to search -- I usually only want to search Drive C and am not interested in searching the Internet with this option.
Well, that second item seems to have disappeared! Have I lost my mind? As far as I can tell, this happened only after SP1 was installed. I located the same box by going to Help and Support and searching for it there (ironic, isn't it?), but I could not figure out where it is actually located. It doesn't make much sense to search for a search box so that I can enter information in the search box!!!
Can any of you tell from this description what has happened and how I can solve the problem? It would even help if I could create a shortcut to the desktop for that Search box, but that could not be done within the box.
In windows vista does anyone know how to create a shortcut (desktop or quicklaunch kind) for regular "Windows Flip" also known as "ctrl-alt-tab". Regular windows flip can be used in aero glass with the keyboard shortcut "ctrl-alt-tab", now i want to place a desktop shortcut for it. NOT for the 3D version which shortcut is widely available (DwmApi #105).
I want to have this shortcut for the regular flip, the filmstrip version wich even in aero I find more useful and quite better looking than the 3D flip version. How to creating "desktop shortcuts" from "keyboard shortcuts"
When I want to share a folder, but also want to get it accessible right from my desktop, should the folder be located in the "public folders" , and have a shortcut on my desktop ?
I've just done a factory restore of Vista H P and re-installed my apps, including MS Office 2007. But when I right click the desktop and choose 'new' I don't see a Word document as one of the options. Excel. Access, Publisher etc are there but not the one I need most often - and which i had before the restore. Anyone have any ideas on getting it back?
I uninstalled a game, but the game never uninstalled the shortcuts on the desktop. Upon attempting the deletion of these icons a window pops up and says it cannot locate file and will not delete...
Yesterday, the Windows Mail shortcut that had been in the pop-up list in the left of the task bar moved to the desktop. I do not want that shortcut on the desktop. How do I get it back in the pop-up list?
When installing software that says it will place a shortcut icon on the desktop no icon appears and sometimes I can't find the program to create my own icon. Is there any way to overcome this?
The subject says "on desktop" only because I haven't looked for signs of this problem elsewhere yet. The problem seems to manifest itself in different ways. I'll describe the most obvious way, and if there's no response, I'll try to describe other symptoms as best I can; although the more I experiment, the more it's starting to look as though I'm zeroing in on something -- I know not what.
After a Restart, a single-click on one of my desktop icons will highlight that icon, but it will also highlight the bottom-rightmost (BR) icon. This was discovered because the typical double-click was causing execution of the BR icon, and not the selected one. If I moved the BR icon up higher on the desktop and tried again, the new BR icon would behave the same way. This happens regardless of which icon I select. It seems that the problem goes away as soon as I successfully call a program and I leave the desktop. The problem returns after a restart.
All of a sudden i cannot right click on the desktop, and i cannot get into the display settings, i get this message - Your system admin has disabled launching if the display settings control panel.
I logged into the Admin account right now, so surely i should be allowed to do this?
I have 2 problems though my mouse scroller ain't working. Another problem is that I cannot find my recycle bin shortcut on my desktop. All I did was tried emptying some stuff I wasn't using but once I hit "empty recycle bin" my shortcut disappeared and I cannot find the program to remake the shortcut. EDIT:Well my scroller for my mouse is working, but I still cannot find my Recycle Bin to make a new shortcut yet..
I recently shutdown and restarted my laptop, and my desktop came up black, and I can't get it to change back to my regular desktop. Here's what I've done:
1-Searched and searched for an answer 2-Right clicked to Personalize/desktop background/blah blah...no change 3-Downloaded Wallpaper_enable.reg and ran as admin etc, no change 4-Oh yeah, scanned with AVG, Malwarebyte's thing...nothing shows 5-Ran autoruns to see if I could spot anything...didn't change anything 6-Ran hijackthis...still looking at it 7-Here I am
My thought is that I had removed spyware but didn't restart? ( I might have been tired)...I was so used to just hibernating my system...when I shutdown & restarted yesterday, a reg file was changed, and my desktop went to crapland. i know it's just cosmetic (I hope) but I guess I'm funny that way.
I have Vista Home Premium SP1. I have set my Desktop Background to be one of my favorite pictures. But every half hour or so, without any warning, the Desktop Background resets itself to black, and I have to go back into Control Panel to reset the background to my picture.
For some reason, the majority of my desktop icons have black boxes covering them. The recycle Bin, a folder I created, and a text document seem to be immune to the black box, but for my other icons, I can't seem to get rid of them. what I can do to get rid of the black boxes?
Recently I've noticed that when I right click on certain files or the desktop, that it would load the context menu after about 1 second. I know this isn't much but it should not take that long for something that small. I went ahead and removed many items from the context menu and the desktop and all other files load the context menu almost instantly. My problem is that .exe files still take 1-2 seconds to load their context menu. I tried removing almost ALL the options in the context menu.
