View 9 RepliesI can't get it to work. I tried running as administrator and no luck. I have a Asus G2 series gaming laptop-OS Vista Home premium 32 bit. The game installed great, but as soon as I click on the shortcut from the desktop it will flicker a black screen and just return me to my desktop. I tried putting my computer in a 800x600 resolustion and still didn't start it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was working on the computer today using several programs and when I went back to the desktop, I noticed a sort of ghosted out icon that looks like a gear on top of a sheet of lined paper and the words "desktop.ini" under it. I have no idea how it got there. Is it safe for me to delete it or is there a better way of getting rid of it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently shutdown and restarted my laptop, and my desktop came up black, and I can't get it to change back to my regular desktop. Here's what I've done:
1-Searched and searched for an answer
2-Right clicked to Personalize/desktop background/blah blah...no change
3-Downloaded Wallpaper_enable.reg and ran as admin etc, no change
4-Oh yeah, scanned with AVG, Malwarebyte's thing...nothing shows
5-Ran autoruns to see if I could spot anything...didn't change anything
6-Ran hijackthis...still looking at it
7-Here I am
My thought is that I had removed spyware but didn't restart? ( I might have been tired)...I was so used to just hibernating my system...when I shutdown & restarted yesterday, a reg file was changed, and my desktop went to crapland. i know it's just cosmetic (I hope) but I guess I'm funny that way.
I have Vista Home Premium SP1. I have set my Desktop Background to be one of my favorite pictures. But every half hour or so, without any warning, the Desktop Background resets itself to black, and I have to go back into Control Panel to
reset the background to my picture.
For some reason, the majority of my desktop icons have black boxes covering them. The recycle Bin, a folder I created, and a text document seem to be immune to the black box, but for my other icons, I can't seem to get rid of them. what I can do to get rid of the black boxes?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently downloaded a wallpaper changer program called Winvista. As soon as I started to play with the different wallpapers on my desktop, I couldn't help but notice that it had completely cocked up! It seems rather odd, behind the display picture there are a series of grid formad dots, very small and regemented. These move around when I open windows over them or when I select desktop icons. I had a go at changing my resolution, display settings, themes, effects and tried using different background pictures. I've restarted a few times and have selected to use different solid colours, but these dots don't budge.

View 5 Replies View RelatedThe thread I'm referring to is called "Black Dots On Desktop Background" and it was posted by charleyvonne. I quote it below. I recently downloaded a wallpaper changer program called Winvista. It seems rather odd, behind the display picture there are a series of grid formad dots, very small and regemented. These move around when I open windows over them or when I select desktop icons. I could try to put up a screen cap of my desktop if it helps?
I downloaded Winvista, a wallpaper changer program, just as this member did, and then black dots appeared on the background colour of my desktop. It is very annoying, and I didn't experience the problem until I downloaded Winvista. I have deleted the Winvista program, since it didn't really work for me anyway, and also I've tried system restore- with no change.I am VERY anxious to correct this issue. Can someone give me some advice? I've checked the advice given on the outdated thread- none of it seemed to offer the solution I need. Also, in the outdated thread charleyvonne didn't seem to find a solution either.
My desktop icons are not working correctly the applications are working fine but the icons are all the same attached is a jpeg of what it looks like as it is hard to explain the problem.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI accidentally deleted my desktop file and it asked me something about duplication. My fingers moved to fast and i agreed. Now I have two of the same icons on my desktop. When I try to delete one of the icons, either they will both go away or one will stay there and not work. Sometimes I can get it to only have 1 icons but once I install a new program, it will double the icons again. I added a desktop file again to "user" file and there is also a "Public Desktop" in the public file. This is very annoying and I would like to be able to put icons on my desktop without the duplication. How do I fix this? This situation is really hard to explain so I hope someone will have an idea of how to fix it besides reinstalling windows.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Quake 4 on Vista 64 Ultimate with the latest 1.4.2 patch. When i go into single player mode the game will just sit there with a black screen and then quit to my desktop with a little pop up on my start menu saying "the video driver has stopped responding". Last time i played this on Vista i was able to play single player no problem, but it would still do the same, but during game play. So i thought i install it again and give it another try, but it still does the same thing. Also i'm running the latest beta 169.09 drivers with a 8800gtx.
View 7 Replies View Relatedhow the broken system acts. When I turn the computer on (it's an HP pavillion DV2000 laptop) it first shows the black screen with the little bar that says MICROSOFT CORPORATION near the bottom of the screen. Then it transitions to the Vista screen that says WELCOME , then the message changes to PREPARING YOUR DESKTOP. These phases take about as long as usual, and the hard drive LED shows a lot of hard drive activity. Finally the Vista logon screen is displayed. I type in my password and the screen changes to my usual desktop color but there is nothing displayed except the mouse pointer.
There is nothing to click, nothing to do. Ctrl+Alt+Del gives the usual menu for LOGOFF, Task Manager, etc. Task Manager shows about 20 processes and the CPU is 96% idle. It shows many services - some of them stopped. Starting in SAFE mode ends up in the same situation. I can't start from a Vista CD because I never got one with this machine - I have only the recovery partition for reloading the original software. So I can't get to recovery console...............
I didn't really want to start a new thread, but I'm too busy to look through to find a matching problem. I can't get an Icon to delete off of my desktop. The account is a standard account, so when I try to delete the icon, it asks for permission. So I type in the password and it says it deletes it, but it's still there. So I try to delete it from the Administrator account(which is the built in account), but it says I don't have permission to delete it. It's not a big problem, but it's just somewhat annoying.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSince installing IE8 RTM in Vista SP1 x86 I've been having some problems with internet shortcut icons not displaying correctly on my desktop. I've tried deleting and redoing them, tried using AM Deadlink to refresh my Favourites icons to no avail. They show normally in Favourites but show as a smaller version within a white frame on the desktop. This doesn't seem to effect all of them, just some.
I've attached two thumbnails to illustrate what I mean. The first one is the Canada Post item in Favourites and the second one is the same shortcut on the desktop. As you can see there there's another one doing the same thing for Newegg.ca. I think I am right in saying that it's not a case of rebuilding the system icon cache as that only effects system icons, am I right? FYI desktop resolution is 1680 x 1050 and I have the desktop icon size set to Classic.
In Win XP I had an icon in my quick launch bar to return to desktop from anywhere. How can I get such an icon/command in Win 7?

* deleting in safe mode doesnt help.
* tried shedding the file wid mcafee...doesnt work.
* deleting from cmd prompt doesnt delete.
* have tried to remove the registry entry, there are various entries and am not able to figure out the exact entry.
When i try to delete, the delete program goes into an infinite loop. says " recycling 1 item..calculating time remaining" and gets stuck.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an old icon on my desktop that I think I have done everything possible to remove but I can't seem to get it to go away. It is a "Network Magic" icon left over from some stuff that got installed with an earlier wireless modem. Everything associated with the modem has been removed from the computer. There is nothing associated with this icon ...it is just there on the desktop and annoying.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended Trial version. As soon as the install finished I noticed that every single one of my desktop shortcut icons now have another icon overlaid in front of them. It's the white square icon you get when your shortcut is not linked to it's program. But my shortcuts are linked and work. Everything's normal about them except for this overlay.
It even appears in front of new shortcuts I create.
Uninstalling the Adobe program did not get rid of them.
Does any one know how to get rid of these overlays...?
