I cannot locate a Windows 7 NG so I am posting here in the hopes that someone can point me in the right direction. Is it possible to add the "Show Desktop" Icon/Function to Windows 7? There is no Icon for it the lower left-hand corner as with Vista.
View 9 RepliesSo today I'm enjoying my 2 day old Vista. I've had a crappy 2003 Compaq XP for EVER now, and I was happy to get a new computer, completely crappy OS or not. (Yes, I've heard the rumors about Vista, so I was prepared for lots and lots of hours of troubleshooting!) I want to look around and explore, so I click on my start menu. Nothing. The My Computer, Control Panel, etc etc etc is on there. But nothing. I click 'all programs', and it's all there. I tried to modify the settings on my start menu, I pressed OK and out of curiosity went back into my Start Menu settings to check-- And they were back to what they were before!!
My easy way out has always been, since my XP was crap, to completely restore my computer, suck it up, reinstall everything and start fresh. So I decided to add a new WinRAR .rar folder thing, put all my pictures in there, put it on Megaupload.com and download the file after I restore Vista. I right clicked. Went under 'New > (Empty)'.
I almost cried! My baby, my brand new vista, already encountering problems! I installed daemon tools, PHotoshop CS2, poweriso, AIM, itunes, basically my necessities, within the two day period. I turned my computer on, no problems. My norton preformed its scheduled scan this morning at 6am, and I had a trojan horse and it can't be repaired. I've had thousands of those on my old computer and it ran at full speed with no problems, but could this be the reason? I restarted it two, three hours ago so my daemon tools can finish installing, and that's when I realized my start menu and things were messed up. Also, when I went into my computer after I restarted, the theme was set on 'windows classic', my background was left untouched. I cannot drag and drop anything into the start menu. It says I can, but I can't. Desktop icons are fine. I also installed 16 or so updates because I guess my Vista isn't up to date-- It did it automatically. Also, links, pictures, etc, like 'My Computer', My 'C:' drive, 'My Pictures', pictures, music, etc in Folders, have a check mark beside them.
After a "show desktop" (minimising all windows) Click one window on the task bar (to resume it) - and instead all windows resume (not just one) - awkward when you're trying to minimise the amount of activity on the desktop

I tried it but i cant for the life of me see any real point in it , ive had cpu monitors in there , bandwidth monitors disk usage stats the weather even linked it up to Everest pro edition and still found it a waste of time , i cant even see it for 99% of the time cos who ever stares at their desktop? Open an app and its gone , or set it to display on top of all windows and it just becomes a pain thats always in the way?? Am i missing something? According to the interweb its one of the most popular features in Vista!! any gadgets you would recommend?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am running Vista Basic upgraded to Home Premium. For some time I have not been able to set a picture as my background. If I set a picture as my background it does not show on my desktop. All I have is a solid colour which I can change. If I use the switch between windows feature of Aero I can see the background but only after I have selected my desktop from the available windows and use the switch between windows feature again. The picture never shows up on my desktop. I did have a problem with Aero at one time when it would load up when I boot up but as soon as my desktop loaded Aero stopped working. I did get this sorted out by uninstalling and reinstalling my graphics card. I hope this makes sense. I know it is not a big problem but I would just like to be able to set a picture as my background.

There are dotted lines from both computers to the router. However, the XP desktop doesn't show up when I choose computers and devices or under network.

View 9 Replies View RelatedOne of my friends has a media sharing problem with an XP Home (sp3) MCE 2005, WMP 11 desktop. I've tried to help him by setting up consistent user accounts (passworded) but it doesn't seem to solve the problem. In a nutshell, his network shows his desktop as both a computer and a media device and it seems he has more shares than I think is wise -- he has disks, folders, files, all marked as share with full control permissions to everyone. He also has tried to solve his problem by consolidating media, but put it all in the "all users" tree instead of with a single user. In short, I'm not sure what he has shared and where he has it.
As a result his music and pix seem to share on the network ok, but he gets duplicate entries in wmp and conflicts when trying to stream video on his network. Maybe this last problem is because of multiple shared videos with the same name maybe in multiple locations (or as multiple users)? So here are my two questions. First, is there an easy way I can help him turn off all sharing and start over? And second, does it matter that his desktop shows up as a media device AND as a computer? If so, how can he fix that problem?
Is there a way to customize the "Show Desktop" button in the quick launch so it minimizes everything but what I specify? In my case, when I press the button, I would like for the Sidebar and RocketDock to stay visible.

Some of my avi files show a picture and some others show a black icon. I did not have this problem before. Before all my avi files show a picture. I have K-Lite Mega Codec Pack (new version). I try Vista Codec but i can solve it. If you don't understand my english, one of the moderators please delete my post.

Sometimes when she uses the hyperlink, documents that have recently been saved to the folder do not show in the Windows Explorer that is launched. She can however launch another Explorer and see all of the documents (with both explorer sessions open side by side).

I made a user's account for XXX. In Windows Explorer my user XXX does not show up. User HP does, and it has all my documents. I don't want the path to all my stuff to go like "C:UsersHPDocuments" , I want it to be "C:UsersXXXDocuments". When I go to user account through Control Panel > User accounts the user HP is *not* shown, user XXX *is shown*. User HP is not visible either if I go to "manage other accounts"
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have Vista Home Premium, I have read other posts and follwed advise to see if SP1 is installed. The Start - Computer - properties - option does not show it under Windows Edition as described in one post. I go to Windows Update and cant find it listed there as installed updates. Pretty sure now that its not installed. go to the download page and it directs me to Windows update for single PC downloads, WU takes over and says I am fully up to date! Advice in other posts says to let WU take care of it and it will download and install SP1.

But when I transfer it to my windows mail the img src is empty. it just shows src"" in the source code of the email and my image is just a blank box with an x in the upper lefthand corner. What during the transfer from html file to signature is making the image source path disappear?

View 4 Replies View Relatedproblem with wmp 11 is that for some reason it takes a good 20+ seconds to play a song. Video streaming is fine, it's just with mp3 format songs. Not only is there a time lag for mp3 song files but it will always start skipping for the last 10 seconds of the file. It never fails, I must wait half a minute whenever I click a song and then it WILL skip during the end. I can't reinstall it for some reason either. It doesn't show up in the add or remove programs list. I can't express my annoyence enough, having such a large library of music.

Windows has always shown file sizes, but NOT FOLDER SIZES unles you right click for the pop out menu, then click Properties. This is too time consuming for me. All I want to do is find which folders are using up so much HDD space so I can then go in & delete the culprit files. If Windows won't allow this simple request, is there some 3rd Party Utility available?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a brand new HP Pavilion desktop and the first two days it gave me blue screens of death. Subsequently I had an expert look at the .dmp files and Windows/System logs that show the unrecoverable events and he said that it clearly shows a -hardware -problem and that I should tell HP and get a new computer. (I have had it just 4 days longer than Best Buy's return policy was in effect because I did not figure out how serious the problem was until 2 days ago. I had been thinking it was just a conflict with my monitor or something but this guy says the .dmp files show that it is a memory or processor problem and cannot be fixed.)
I spent 3 and 1/2 hours online in a chat session with an IDIOT supervisor in India and he did not fully understand the problem and kept preaching "System Restore". I kept saying that -System Restore will not fix a Hardware problem- so there was no point to it. He finally came up with this: "sir, the processor sends some IRQ requests etc to other hardware devices, and the log suggests me that theres a conflick in such IRQ requests." Even so, how is System Restore going to FIX a hardware problem that already exists???..........

I have listed her address in my safe senders and she is not listed in my block senders but somehow only her emails go into phishing. Someone answered my question but when I click on the link to get my answer, a blank page comes up (it should take me straight to my question and the answer). And I cannot find my question anywhere when I sign in to the discussion group.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have Vista Home Premium 32-bit OS. I possibly want to upgrade to Windows 7 equivalent. Here's my dilemma: I installed Service Pack 1 via Windows website download manager, and after a fashion, it appeared to have installed and it rebooted my system. It clearly shows as having been installed according to Windows Update History. [Additionally, Service Pack 2 is not offered as a download, but the rest of my query, please.] HOWEVER, according to Microsoft, when I click START > right click COMPUTER, at the top of that resulting page and beneath my version of Vista it should show "Service Pack 1."
In my case, it does not! FURTHER, I downloaded and ran Windows 7 Update Advisor, the results show I need to download and install Service Pack 1. I'm aware that I can download. or order on CD, each of the Service Packs and install, starting with Service Pack 1 before attempting to install Service Pack 2. Why does Service Pack 1 show as installed in Windows Update History, but does NOT seem to be installed according to the two other instances/sources I've mentioned above?
I have tried going into Programs and Features and It show it but gives on option to uninstall.
