How or what can I do to have this Icon inform me that an Update is ready to be downloaded? I have exactly the same problem, windows update notification icon never appears in the taskbar system tray, to alert me for new update available (important or not). I'm set to search new update and let me choose. The only time the icon appears is when it downloading new update because I do a manual check. And an other problem with windows update, it never say me that SP2 is downloadable (never appears). I must go on microsoft download center and download it manually. Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit SP1
So today I'm enjoying my 2 day old Vista. I've had a crappy 2003 Compaq XP for EVER now, and I was happy to get a new computer, completely crappy OS or not. (Yes, I've heard the rumors about Vista, so I was prepared for lots and lots of hours of troubleshooting!) I want to look around and explore, so I click on my start menu. Nothing. The My Computer, Control Panel, etc etc etc is on there. But nothing. I click 'all programs', and it's all there. I tried to modify the settings on my start menu, I pressed OK and out of curiosity went back into my Start Menu settings to check-- And they were back to what they were before!!
My easy way out has always been, since my XP was crap, to completely restore my computer, suck it up, reinstall everything and start fresh. So I decided to add a new WinRAR .rar folder thing, put all my pictures in there, put it on Megaupload.com and download the file after I restore Vista. I right clicked. Went under 'New > (Empty)'.
I almost cried! My baby, my brand new vista, already encountering problems! I installed daemon tools, PHotoshop CS2, poweriso, AIM, itunes, basically my necessities, within the two day period. I turned my computer on, no problems. My norton preformed its scheduled scan this morning at 6am, and I had a trojan horse and it can't be repaired. I've had thousands of those on my old computer and it ran at full speed with no problems, but could this be the reason? I restarted it two, three hours ago so my daemon tools can finish installing, and that's when I realized my start menu and things were messed up. Also, when I went into my computer after I restarted, the theme was set on 'windows classic', my background was left untouched. I cannot drag and drop anything into the start menu. It says I can, but I can't. Desktop icons are fine. I also installed 16 or so updates because I guess my Vista isn't up to date-- It did it automatically. Also, links, pictures, etc, like 'My Computer', My 'C:' drive, 'My Pictures', pictures, music, etc in Folders, have a check mark beside them.
I have WU to notify me when updates are available for download, so I can decide what and if to download and install them. I noticed that I havent gotten a notification in awhile, usually WU has updates available every week. when I check for updates through WU, it says its up to date.. ( with the exception of an optional update for SilverLight..) last install was 8/15. but there are defender updates after that date installed, ( defender update has its own settings I'm guessing at this point?? ) Attached is a snip of the update window...kinda paranoid that I'm either not getting updates, or they are still being installed without notification?
Just recently a new icon appeared in the notification area and I can't get rid of it or even find out what it is. If you hover over the icon, there is no pop up message saying what it is. Left and right click don't do anything at all. I've looked in the customise icons section but it is just listed as "<no title>".
The icon looks like two figures in front of a small window, with the windows shield at the front. I've tried to attach a screen shot of it. It's the second one from the left.
It appears shortly after starting up the laptop and then won't go.
I've got an ACER Aspire 5735, running Vista Home Basic.
Is there a way to identify the items in the notification area?
I have an Asus Motherboard that has an EPU-6 Engine (EPU = Energy Processing Unit, all it does is maximize energy usage on the mobo). It comes with a small app that puts itself in the Notification Area so that you can change between energy profiles easily. I like the app, but I don't want it shown there all the time. I already tried the "Hide Inactive Icons" option, and also tried to hide it manually by selecting "Hide" from the drop down menu in the "Custom..." options. The problem is that it hides the icon, but when I reboot, all those settings are undone. Is there a way to fix that?
I am running Vista Home Premium. I have a Windows "New Update" icon sitting in my notification area which I do not want or need. Does anyone no of a way to get rid of this irritation
Windows Mail is not displaying a New Mail Notification icon in the system tray. Is this an option that I just can't find? It's terrible inconvenient, since i don't usually have sound turned on I don't know when I get new mail!
I have a program in my start menu that when I select it it doesn't open, it mealy places it's icon in the notification area of the task bar. This has forced me to right click and select 'Open' form the icon's context menu. I tried changing the 'Run' box to maximized but it didn't work. The original folder the program put in the start menu after installation worked ok. I have since removed it and added just the executable to the star menu which is what doesn't seem to want to cooperate.
I keep changing a Notification Area Icon to 'Show' but it keeps getting changed to 'Hide when inactive'. I do have the 'Hide inactive icons' checked. So what good does it do to be able to change the icon setting to 'Show' in 'Customize' if it keeps changing back? Any way to keep this icon showing without unchecking 'Hide inactive icons'???
I'm running Vista Home Premium SP2 with 2 GB of RAM, all WU's, Firefox, MBAM, SuperAntiSpywareProfessional, CCleaner, Spybot, CA Security Suite, and WLM. The machine's running just great but after the last restart (to complete the uninstall of Ad-Aware) my little Lexmark All-In-One printer icon is missing from the notification area. It's usually placed right next to my network icon. I've tried restarting the service (an app called `lxcz_device') using `services.msc' but to no avail. The printer works just fine. how to get that icon back again without doing another restart?
There is an untitled icon always present in the notification area of my taskbar. This Icon appears to be a locked padlock with the number 9 on it. When I pass my cursor over it no title or description appears and nothing appears to happen when I right click, left click or double click on it. I have searched the help files and browsed Windows Explorer looking for a file with such an icon and have not found any. My hunch is that icon must be related to some security feature. I am using McAfee antivirus.
Is my first post and i have a problem with avi file icon. I am from Cyprus and my english its not very good. Some of my avi files show a picture and some others show a black icon. I did not have this problem before. Before all my avi files show a picture. I have K-Lite Mega Codec Pack (new version). I try Vista Codec but i can solve it. If you don't understand my english, one of the moderators please delete my post.
I got a blue screen the other day while surfing on my Powere Utility Service sites. Upon reboot my desktop came up minus the little Network icon in the Notification area of the taskbar. Also missing was my Realtek HD Audio Manager icon for my PC speakers. I tried re-establishing these but wasn't successful. Then I tried another reboot and the Realtek icon came back, but the Network icon is still missing. I had to do another restart after a power failure and this time the same Network icon was missing.
I have an Acer laptop with Vista (SP1). Recently I have noticed the power icon no longer displays in the notification area. If I go to Taskbar and Start Menu Properties, Notification Area tab, the Power check box is grayed out and not checked. This may have happened as a result of installing SP1, which I did two weeks ago, but I am not sure. I did not notice this until three days ago.
I have tried a registry edit I found online (deleting any keys regarding "iconstreams"), but this did not help.
I have Vista Home Premium 32-bit OS. I possibly want to upgrade to Windows 7 equivalent. Here's my dilemma: I installed Service Pack 1 via Windows website download manager, and after a fashion, it appeared to have installed and it rebooted my system. It clearly shows as having been installed according to Windows Update History. [Additionally, Service Pack 2 is not offered as a download, but the rest of my query, please.] HOWEVER, according to Microsoft, when I click START > right click COMPUTER, at the top of that resulting page and beneath my version of Vista it should show "Service Pack 1."
In my case, it does not! FURTHER, I downloaded and ran Windows 7 Update Advisor, the results show I need to download and install Service Pack 1. I'm aware that I can download. or order on CD, each of the Service Packs and install, starting with Service Pack 1 before attempting to install Service Pack 2. Why does Service Pack 1 show as installed in Windows Update History, but does NOT seem to be installed according to the two other instances/sources I've mentioned above?
It seems that I'm not the only one who had the Windows Sidebar no longer working after installing the new release of Internet Explorer. After spending a lot of time trying to find a solution, here is the way I have solve the problem. Now the sidebar is just working fine. This behavior is observed if the XML registration is missing in the system. To fix the problem, use the following steps:
* Close Windows Sidebar. To do so, right-click on the Sidebar icon in the Notification area and click Exit
* Open an elevated Command Prompt window. To do so, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
* In the Command Prompt window, type the following and press ENTER:

I've had Vista for a while now and out of the blue weird things start happening. Whenever I browse through folders on my hd via an application like Photoshop or Internet Explorer, that application will lock up when I get into Documents. Whenever I make a 'New Folder' the folder icon does not show up and its this weird white thing. Almost all folders in Windows Explorer look like this and it's extremely annoying.
In the system tray in Windows XP there was a modem icon that lighted up when data was being transmitted or received. It really helped with a dialup connection - being able to see if the connection was active or not. In Vista, the modem icon is static and doesn't show anything other than the fact that there is an active connection. Does anyone know of a workaround to get an **activity** icon that works like the good old XP one?
The paper clip ikon shows when there is not any attachment. I understand that this is caused by using AVG Free to scan the incoming e-mail. Does anyone know if I upgrade to the full paid version of AVG will this be corrected? I have Vista 64 home premium and explorer for e-mail.
Wife has a new Vista box which she runs AOL on. Question is whether there is anyway to put an connection icon in the tray that show when connected or activity going on (Sending /receiving) like I have for my DSL connection on my XP box?
I have just got a new machine with Vista Home 64 and when I click onto the D Drive which is my DVD player it informs me that D: application not found but it will show the icon from the disk or film. I have looked into the properties and location, channel and lun are all at 0. I can get the disk to run if I click on the DVD folder on the left handside.
It has some good icons the ones i was interested in was the Blue/Green folder icons similar to the ones installed on my Vista , I downloaded them extracted as advised everything OK but when i tried to us them IE Customise/Change icon/browse route they don't show up in the folder which is strange because i can open the folder normally and see them , they are in PNG format could this be the problem if anybody manages to use them or can shed some light on
My home PC, running Vista and wired to the network, drops momentarily from my home network and looses the connection to the network printer. Usually happens when I click a link to a new page. An error comes up saying something like "page unavailable". I hit "refresh" and the page loads. I can sit at the PC and watch the network Icon in the system tray show up with a "red X" and then the red x disappears. The interesting thing is that my two laptops run wirelessly and wired to the network with out an issue. I am guessing it has to be something with the settings off myPC ethernet card? I tried updating drivers, but no new driver was available.
I'm a Windows Vista Ulitimate 32 user since 2008. I've always updated the system using "Windows Update" but since two weeks ago, the system jut don't show the list of updates available. It tells me I have new updates (system tray icon) but when I open it, I cant see nothing. Here is the printscreen: The gray background is just my personal configuration... So, I can see I have 41 optional updates, for example, but there is no list of them! quite strange.
I just added more RAM to my machine. I went back to the index to update, and nothing was there. It showed my old score, which needed to be updated, but there weren't any other graphics on the page. Anyone seen this problem before?
my Recycle Bin does not update its icon status, i.e. when I delete something I always have to press F5 to "refresh" the icons to get the correct icon of the "full" bin displayed; and when I empty the recycle bin, the same thing happens. What seems to be the problem here? Is there a icon cache file somewhere that I have to delete?
