my Recycle Bin does not update its icon status, i.e. when I delete something I always have to press F5 to "refresh" the icons to get the correct icon of the "full" bin displayed; and when I empty the recycle bin, the same thing happens. What seems to be the problem here? Is there a icon cache file somewhere that I have to delete?
View 5 RepliesWhen you dump things in your recycle the icon changes to a pic of a full bin (as we all know) well mine doesnt , not until after a reeboot then it shows as having contents.
if i put something in my bin now , it will go into the bin , i can open the bin and its there to be recycled but the icon wont change , if i dont empty the bin upon next reboot the bin will show as having contents so im assuming its not the icon cache thats screwed up (i have rebuilt it just incase and ive checked the correct icons are selected)...
I used to have a Network Icon in the RH Tray, with a blue mark to show the Internet connection was up and running. All of a sudden it showed a red cross, yet the internet connection was still OK. Yesterday the icon disappeared altogether and I can't see how to get it back! It is not one of the hidden icons.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSomehow when I was wiping off my keyboard I must have renamed my recycle bin (you know how that stuff happens) ... so I saw that it was numbered. I renamed it Recycle Bin like it should be. Well when I go into Personalization 1 full ... They are both named Recycle Bin and they have (empty) and (full) underneath the correct ones. The problem is that when I empty the recycle bin depending on which one is on my desktop, it doesn't change ... in other words .... it doesn't matter if I have the empty or full one on my desktop ... if I put something in it and *empty recycle* bin, it doesn't change to empty or vice versa. It really helped with a dialup connection - being able to see if the connection was active or not. In Vista, the modem icon is static and doesn't show anything other than the fact that there is an active connection. Does anyone know of a workaround to get an **activity** icon that works like the good old XP one?
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I go to "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" and click on the "Notification Area" Tab I see that under "System Icons" that the only one I can check is the Clock; all the others are grayed out and I can't check them, however, I had a Sound Icon in my Taskbar previously that has for some odd reason simply disappeared, and since I can't check on it here, I can't seem to get it back in my Taskbar no matter where I look on the computer. How can I restore this option so that I have a Sound Icon in my Taskbar again, and are the other two features--Network and Power, a problem being that they too are grayed out?

Though, recently I've noticed that windows update doesn't notify me about new update like it has done before, where a icon in the tray popped up and notified me about new updates. Anyone know why? And how i can get it back to normal? I like to get notified when new updates are out, don't like to open windows update, and see there is some important updates that's been waiting for a week or two.

View 8 Replies View RelatedThe other day my compter was working just fine, until the battery died and it shut off. Ever since then, when I start it up McAfee doesn't open at start up, or at all for that matter. And, everytime I double click on the shortcut, the picture comes up, but it just stays that way, and then the desktop freezes. And, when I try to open something that needs permission to continue, like when I right click and select "Run as administrator, nothing happens. Also, when I try to uninstall something, nothing happens. The internet icon on the taskbar is always frozen, indicating that there's no connection, when there actually is.
Most programs do the same as McAfee, althought Internet Explorer 8 works, but not well. It stops working alot and hulu videos don't work for instance. Also, anytime I try to download something on IE8, it quickly jumps to 99% and stops there. And, whenever I try system restore in help, the window stops responding. My mom thinks that it might be a virus from a song that she downloaded on LimeWire 5.1.1 PRO. But again, McAfee won't work. And my registry cleaning software won't open, because it has to ask permission. Which doesn't work. Windows Update doesn't even respond when I open it. What should I do?
So today I'm enjoying my 2 day old Vista. I've had a crappy 2003 Compaq XP for EVER now, and I was happy to get a new computer, completely crappy OS or not. (Yes, I've heard the rumors about Vista, so I was prepared for lots and lots of hours of troubleshooting!) I want to look around and explore, so I click on my start menu. Nothing. The My Computer, Control Panel, etc etc etc is on there. But nothing. I click 'all programs', and it's all there. I tried to modify the settings on my start menu, I pressed OK and out of curiosity went back into my Start Menu settings to check-- And they were back to what they were before!!
My easy way out has always been, since my XP was crap, to completely restore my computer, suck it up, reinstall everything and start fresh. So I decided to add a new WinRAR .rar folder thing, put all my pictures in there, put it on Megaupload.com and download the file after I restore Vista. I right clicked. Went under 'New > (Empty)'.
I almost cried! My baby, my brand new vista, already encountering problems! I installed daemon tools, PHotoshop CS2, poweriso, AIM, itunes, basically my necessities, within the two day period. I turned my computer on, no problems. My norton preformed its scheduled scan this morning at 6am, and I had a trojan horse and it can't be repaired. I've had thousands of those on my old computer and it ran at full speed with no problems, but could this be the reason? I restarted it two, three hours ago so my daemon tools can finish installing, and that's when I realized my start menu and things were messed up. Also, when I went into my computer after I restarted, the theme was set on 'windows classic', my background was left untouched. I cannot drag and drop anything into the start menu. It says I can, but I can't. Desktop icons are fine. I also installed 16 or so updates because I guess my Vista isn't up to date-- It did it automatically. Also, links, pictures, etc, like 'My Computer', My 'C:' drive, 'My Pictures', pictures, music, etc in Folders, have a check mark beside them.
PC: HP Windows Media Center PC m8200n; Monitor HP w1907. November 2007. OS: Windows Vista Home Premium. HP: Deskjet F4180. So I noticed that the printer icon for my printer became all white, IE a corrupted icon. So I went online and found information on how to refresh your icon folder. That didn't do anything. So I thought I'd uninstall and reinstall.
I have tried to reinstall my HP software from disc, and I get a 'new PSSWCORE.msi' file. I see the file on the install disc, yet it won't install. 'Network resource is unavailable.'
Now I cannot uninstall it. On my Add/Remove I see:
HP Customer Participation Program 9.0
HP All In One Software 9.0
HP Imaging device Functions 9.0
HP On-Screen Cap/Num/Scroll Lock Indicator

How can I get these off my PC, and reinstall cleanly so I can use my rinter/scanner again?
I installed new software and pinned the executable to the start menu. But, Vista displays a generic icon in the start menu for this program. All other programs pinned to the start menu display the correct icon. Any way to get Vista to dispaly the proper icon for this program??

Sometime later it decided to lose sight of the network altogether. I have vista 32bit. My video card is an nVidia nForce Networking Controller. The driver currently on there is nvm60x32.sys. After doing some google searching I have found that I am not the only idiot who decided to try vista out and is having the same problem.

I miss being able to see a graphic representation of a disk's fragmentation. Also, previous versions of Windows provided the user a progress bar than informed them of the status of the defrag program when it was running. It appears that Home Premium runs in the background and one never gets a "defragmentation complete" dialog box with options to see a report. I've tried running it manually and not closing the Run dialog box, but it seems to run for hours without any feedback to the user.

View 5 Replies View RelatedOn my Acer lapto, vista battery status shows it is 100% charged, but only 30 minutes working time remains. The working mode has been set to 'balanced', but even changing it to 'power save' it only gains a couple of minutes.
I have my laptop for almost a year. Is it normal that the battery practically used up within a year? Or is perhaps something else wrong here? In the beginning it could almost last 3 hours. But with only 30 minutes you can't get any work done.
Before installing Vista, I tought of making a backup on a second internal hard disk which a bought and installed on the original XP professional machine, I found myself to be very smart doing this. Unfortunatly now that Vista is installed on this machine the disk is not accessible. disk manager says "dynamic disk status invalid"? What can/should I do to gain control over this disk again? I can convert it to a standard disk (only option available in disk manager) beause then I will loos the information it contains.
