Sound Icon In Taskbar Doesn't Working
May 15, 2009
When I go to "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" and click on the "Notification Area" Tab I see that under "System Icons" that the only one I can check is the Clock; all the others are grayed out and I can't check them, however, I had a Sound Icon in my Taskbar previously that has for some odd reason simply disappeared, and since I can't check on it here, I can't seem to get it back in my Taskbar no matter where I look on the computer. How can I restore this option so that I have a Sound Icon in my Taskbar again, and are the other two features--Network and Power, a problem being that they too are grayed out?

It's the network activity icon near the clock... I much prefer to know the exact activity of my PC and the internet/network PC.... in WinXP this icon would flash in tune with which computer was doing the "talking". This helped me many times figure out if it was an issue on my end or on the internet end depending on how the lights would flash. Not exact, but I used it as a quick guide. but in Vista, the icon seems to just have a simple animation that repeats over and over (I've turned on "enable activity animation). The icon has gone from something usefull (telling me which computer was sending data... to just being a simple animation that only animates when there's overall network activity. So anyway if getting the older more acurate activity animation back?... or would this require a third party download now?

how to restore the wifi icon in the taskbar? I have vista home premium on an HP laptop. It was there this morning, and now, when i turned it on, its gone. I right clicked on the taskbar, then left clicked on properties, found the notification area, and the network square is grayed out so I can't put a check in it. I think that is what would put the icon back next to the battery icon.

There is an untitled icon always present in the notification area of my taskbar. This Icon appears to be a locked padlock with the number 9 on it. When I pass my cursor over it no title or description appears and nothing appears to happen when I right click, left click or double click on it. I have searched the help files and browsed Windows Explorer looking for a file with such an icon and have not found any. My hunch is that icon must be related to some security feature. I am using McAfee antivirus.

I got a blue screen the other day while surfing on my Powere Utility Service sites. Upon reboot my desktop came up minus the little Network icon in the Notification area of the taskbar. Also missing was my Realtek HD Audio Manager icon for my PC speakers. I tried re-establishing these but wasn't successful. Then I tried another reboot and the Realtek icon came back, but the Network icon is still missing. I had to do another restart after a power failure and this time the same Network icon was missing.

I've just done a mild overclock on my q9550 and raised the FSB to 383 giving me a clock speed of 3.2 Multipliers are 6.0 and 8.5 respectively (I'm leaving speedstep on ATM) Mobo is a P5Q PRO. With the FSB strap set to auto, my DDR2 800 RAM is now being reported as Dual DDR2 766 (383mhz) which doesn't sound right to me. I don't seem to be able to manually select 800MHz. The FSBRAM ratio is now 1:1 With the CPU voltage set to AUTO, according to CPU-Z it's now maxing 1.296, would it be safer to lower this and remain stable? The only stress testing I've done so far is 2x10 passes of IBT @ maximum stress with no errors plus a bit of Far Cry 2 and STALKER. (I primarily wanted to check the CPU temp) I'll do more rigirous testing when i'm sure I've got it all set up properly. What is concerning me is that my LOAD temps aren't what I'd expected with the NH-U12P cooler:
Real Temp 2.70 max LOAD: @3.2MHz
Core 1: 63c
Core 2: 63c
Core 3: 63c
Core 4: 63c
They seem a bit high, I'm thinking that the cooler needs to be re-seated etc (even @2.8 it maxed out at 52c)Am I at least heading in the right direction?

In the system tray in Windows XP there was a modem icon that lighted up when data was being transmitted or received. It really helped with a dialup connection - being able to see if the connection was active or not. In Vista, the modem icon is static and doesn't show anything other than the fact that there is an active connection. Does anyone know of a workaround to get an **activity** icon that works like the good old XP one?

my Recycle Bin does not update its icon status, i.e. when I delete something I always have to press F5 to "refresh" the icons to get the correct icon of the "full" bin displayed; and when I empty the recycle bin, the same thing happens. What seems to be the problem here? Is there a icon cache file somewhere that I have to delete?

I have been having this problem, which is that sometimes, my sound is working, and sometimes it is not. It usually starts working after my PC has been off for a long period of time (for example, when I wake up). Oh, and if this helps, my soundcard is a Realtek HD card.

When I drag a window on my screen, only window's outline drags, and not the windows itself. Is it possible to make it, so whenever I drag the windows on my screen, the actual window moves, not the outline of it? Previews of "Running Programs" on my taskbar DOESN'T work anymore. It doesn't preview them to me anymore.

When you dump things in your recycle the icon changes to a pic of a full bin (as we all know) well mine doesnt , not until after a reeboot then it shows as having contents.
if i put something in my bin now , it will go into the bin , i can open the bin and its there to be recycled but the icon wont change , if i dont empty the bin upon next reboot the bin will show as having contents so im assuming its not the icon cache thats screwed up (i have rebuilt it just incase and ive checked the correct icons are selected)...

I have Windows Vista Home Premium on an HP Pavillion DV9000 laptop and since day one, the task bar clock has NEVER shown the correct time. The correct time zone is displayed, I have disabled the internet updates and I have set the correct time who knows how many times. However it can take DAYS for it to move forward minutes. sometimes, it does a time warp and goes back in time. The BIOS clock has no problems, displays the correct date and time every time, but it is now beginning to bug the heck out of me.

I recently got a laptop, I am very happy with it, but recently the taskbar has been annoying me, instead of displaying the opened program buttons (or whatever they are called, the ones that bring you to an allready opened window when you click them) on the left with a lot of room, the are displayed on the right, and only two buttons can be displayed at the same time, also, If I have two windows of the same type, the combine into a drop down (up) menu instead of seven or do being the minimum amount of same type windows before that happens.

Back in June I installed Vista onto my machine (prior to this I ran xp for 3 years and the sound worked). I was ok with the sound not working since I had a bluetooth headset which worked fine...It's starting to get annoying now. I have a gigabyte motherboard with AC'97 (ALC850 codec) on board sound card. The driver is up to date. I have the volume icon, and it shows my speakers in the play back device section. When I play an audio file, the green bar lights up on the speaker icon.
I can't find the thread now but I did try the suggestion of opening up the playback devices, right clicking in an empty area and showing all disabled devices...there wasn't any devices hidden. Hopefully I provided enough information, if not please ask. I really don't want to buy a sound card but it's looking like I might not have a choice.

I installed the freshest realtek drivers to go with my IP35 motherboard and my Logitech x-530 5.1 surround still wont play the center or subwolfer speakers. In Vista-64s audio settings I played around with different configurations and did wire re-assigning that didn't work either, it seems people are having similar problems. Anyone have a fix for this?

While trying to uninstall Comodo, I had an error and the computer froze. I shut it off and it wouldn't boot - not even in Safe Mode. So I used ERUNT to fix the Registry from a command prompt. Unfortunately, the latest ERUNT file was corrupted - so I had to go back about a week. The computer then booted, but I found many changes in some of my data and settings. Also, I cannot get the sound to work. I again used ERUNT from Windows with the same backup I used from the command prompt. All indications on the computer indicate that the sound is working. But when I try to test the speakers and microphone, I get a message which says there is no sound. I have uninstalled the two sound items in Device Manager and used find hardware to reinstall them. I even reinstalled the drivers. Device Manager says there is no problem with the sound items and they say they are working properly.

When i had XP on my computer everything was working fine. I did an overlay of Vista and now any audio device with a jack won't work.. My USB headphones do... I have gone through all the playback settings, searched through all of control panel to do with sound. I have downloaded the necessary realtek drivers (High Definition Audio Device) and nothing. I have also tried plugging the jack in the front instead of the back. The speakers work on any XP machine... just having troubles with my vista machine.

I have a problem, since I rebooted my computer, (I have windows vista) HP Computer / Since I rebooted, my sound works on the computer no problem, BUT the earphone jack doesn't work. Now, the computer sees the earphones, but it doesn't work, no sound comes-out of the earphones, I still hear the sound from the computer.
What can I do to solve this problem? I have tried everything, like I said, the computer read the earphones, but no sound comes-out, even if the earphones wouldn't work, the sound would be in the earphones but if broken, just wouldn't work. Now all the earphones I tried work, just no sound! .

After waiting for all the Windows updates to finish i turned on some music and my Sound was messed up, i have sound it just dosn't seem to work right. On some ill be able to hear everything but the singer and on others and hear only the singer. This also effects games, i turn on my scarface seeing it was closest game near me and installed it, on that i can't hear Scarfaces voice, or the cars around me but i can hear other people speak. Does anyone know whats wrong with my sound? I use the soundcard that is built onto my motherbored because i have never had need of a Sound card in the past. my new motherbored is an MSI motherbored and my processor is Intel core 2 duo.

Few days back, I was installing/uninstalling some programs. I don't know what went wrong, but I found the links in "Computer" are not working. When I open "My Computer" ("Computer" in Vista), all the links like "Device Manager", "Remote Settings" etc are not working. It says for "Device Manager" - "Windows cannot find '%SystemRoot%\system32devmgmt.msc". However, if I run the same command from a DOS window, it exists. This is same for all the other links.
My sound icon in the task bar is also marked a permanent red cross. If I open Volume Mixer, it says - No audio device found. But I can still hear sound.
