When I drag a window on my screen, only window's outline drags, and not the windows itself. Is it possible to make it, so whenever I drag the windows on my screen, the actual window moves, not the outline of it? Previews of "Running Programs" on my taskbar DOESN'T work anymore. It doesn't preview them to me anymore.

I recently have updated programs and have been cleaning my registry with RegistryEasy. Suddenly the taskbar changed and the theme isn't vista-like anymore. I have attached a picture of the bits........
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a windows Vista machine at home and I got one of those viruses that imitate the MS virus scanning tool. I logged off my acct and ran the malware tool I have and the virus scanner and cleaned everything up. But when I logged back into my user acct I could not open any icons or run any programs it seems that they are not recognizing the .exe files as valid. I get the error saying there is no program associated with this shortcut. But even when I try to run it manually it doesn't work. I can go into my other user acct and run all the programs fine. So my question is if I can't fix my user acct what do I need to do to create a new one but duplicate what I have now? I'm especially concerned about my email files, contacts etc. I can easily move my important personal files over I'm just really concerned about the mail and other programs I run now. Let me know if you need more info. BTW I do not have a valid restore point to work with. I have since created one in case I mess something else up while I try to fix this problem.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have had Windows Vista 64 for 2 Months now and of that period of time it worked soundly for about 2 Weeks. I am NOT an irresponsible User, I don't just delete Data, I know a little something about computing, I don't visit or download from dubious sites etc.
1) Without any reason software suddently doesn't work.
a) I installed a Antivirussoftware - after 3 Weeks it suddently didn't work any more (Kaspersky) I couldn't reinstall it.
b) I installed a new Antivirussoftware - after 5 days it didn't work anymore.
c) 4 days later I started to get errormessages "Windows Defender doesn't work any more" - "Windows Hostprocess doesn't work anymore"
When I go to "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" and click on the "Notification Area" Tab I see that under "System Icons" that the only one I can check is the Clock; all the others are grayed out and I can't check them, however, I had a Sound Icon in my Taskbar previously that has for some odd reason simply disappeared, and since I can't check on it here, I can't seem to get it back in my Taskbar no matter where I look on the computer. How can I restore this option so that I have a Sound Icon in my Taskbar again, and are the other two features--Network and Power, a problem being that they too are grayed out?

Will some of my 32 bit programs run on Vista 64 bit? I am thinking about Firefox 3 and Thunderbird 2 especially. Does Vista 64 have a compatibility mode where I can run 32 bit applications? If yes, does the compatibility mode actually work?
I am planning on some multimedia work recording music and video. I know that I need a second hard drive. One for the OS and one to record to. The model of PC that I am considering has a RAID configuration using two hard drives. How would these drives appear to me in Vista 64 bit? As one drive? As two? If it is one drive, can I set a partition to have the two drives I need? If so, are partitions difficult to setup?
What are your opinions on the 64 bit system? Is this the future and eventually everything will be going 64 bit, or will it fade out as a good idea that never happened? The PC I am looking at is expensive and I wish to know if it will be useful for a long time.
Is Vista 64 going to be the current OS and more and more companies will be supporting it? Is Vista going to be around for a long time? I am seeing buzz about Windows 7. When would Windows 7 be out and would it require 64 bit?
I'm having an issue when i try and run certain applications, tried running the 2 spore prototypes, a couple of online games and also (a little more esoteric here) a piece of software designed for scanning through 3d Xrays! (dads a dentist with some cool tech). In all cases when i try to run them a window opens for the program but theres no graphics inside. I dont mean its like white blank, i mean its just see through to the desktop.

I'll be running just a few programs like firefox and windows media player or word processor and the computer will freeze, the sound will take whatever the last little note that came out and stutter repeat it several times and then the entire screen will go completely blank to a dark blue screen.

Last night, I decided to connect my HDMI cord to the laptop and watch a few episodes of Lost with my friends. Now, the HDMI button ('F8') wasn't working properly after my little mishap a few months earlier. When I pressed it, the usual, nice little pictures of different laptop-tv settings did not appear. Instead, I tried FN+ALT+F8. This seemed to work. But after we finished, I couldn't get the screen to return to normal again. It's all fuzzy and big, as if I was still connected to the tv.
** I tried personlization, and fizing screen resolution and stuff. It made things a little better, but the screen STILL isn't the same. Funny thing though. When I use print screen, the screen looks NORMAL. This morning, I rebooted my laptop. (Probably the stupidest thing I've ever done) I thought everything would be back to normal, but the screen is still the same, the nice little extras about Vista I was missing before have not returned, and my internet connection is gone.
Does anyone have any idea of any fix for this. The systems totally locks up randomly when running a web video and or audio program and it seems to be in Media Player, iTunes and other programs as well. I am running Vista home basic on this machine but it does the same thing on my HP running Vista Ultimate as well. I go back into the error messages in the application, systems, and performance logs and can not find any suggestions on what the problem could possible be. I have looked through Blogs and find that this is happening on a variety of machines and configurations and versions of Vista and the only suggestion was to work in the config.msc utility and try turning off non Microsoft services that you can.

View 0 Replies View RelatedThe symptom of my problem is Vista is telling me that my firewall is not running, but it won't start manually. Also doesn't connect to the internet (I'm using a borrowed machine here) I can see that BFE is not running and that won't start either, says a file is missing. I have tried a system restore to several different points, after quite a few minutes tells me this has failed and the problem is still there. Tried the sfc which said it fixed some files but could not fix all, wasn't obvious to me from the log what it couldn't fix.
In desperation have backed everything up I can find and tried to reinstall (I have a Dell installation disc so no option to repair) This got to the first reboot on expanding files (27%) and then failed and restored back to the original configuration. As you can see I seem to be in big troubles, (started after a Windows Update this morning as far as I can tell, was alright before that)
I have robot form and accidently deleted my bookmark.htm as i was cleaning up some files. I am running a recovery program in hopes it will help me recover that file. Is there anything else i can do if recovery don't work?

I have a XP home basic from my last computer and I loved it as it was easy to use and I didn't need to update all my stuff. I want to install XP on my new computer but have never done this before. have already backed up all my important files on CD, but don't know what to do next. my computer didn't come with any back up discs of any kind.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just bought a Hp 8300 with the Windows media center running Vista. If I try and watch the TV, it will pause and need to restart the computer to use the computer. It just locks up. Hp Tech support had me install new drivers, then they had me do the reinstall to original settings.. It worked until I tried to record, then it locked up again and the TV doesn't work again. It will lock up after watching the TV about 15 seconds. I returned the computer and got another one, it does the same thing, Tech support told me I had a bad tuner (on 2 computers?) they sent me a new tuner, that didn't work. Then they said I needed to reinstall the factory settings from the disk, they sent that to me and that did not fix the problem. The computer did not come with a new monitor and I am using a Sony flatscreen, its about 4 years old. Is that my problem? I'm going to take the computer to the store and let them see if they can make it work with a new monitor.

I used an Airlink101 3.5??? USB 2.0 SATA/IDE HDD Enclosure, Model AEN-U35SE to make the connection. I am able to access the files on the old hard drive, but the programs don???t work. The whole point was to be able to use MS Word in the old format, rather than the new format, which looks completely different. Other programs don???t work, either. What can I do to make them work?

1) Programs no longer work - will I have to reinstall everything?
2) We both need access to our old Outlook PST files. I know these were probably kept in windows.old but is there likely to be any problems accessing them? If so, what do I need to do?
3) Would it be easier to restore the old Vista installation and try a repair? If so, how do I do this?
My machine was OEM but did come with a Vista DVD.

Currently I have a network consisting of four computers connected through an internal switch on one of my computers in one of the bedrooms for ease of cabling. The computer with the broadband modem has been chosen as it is newest and is closest to the telephone line socket. It has two network cards, one connected to the modem and the other to the rest of the network. Independantly, the network connections are running fine (all computers can see each other and transfer data properly) and the internet connection is working well for the computer connected directly to the modem.
The network is setup using Static IP Addresses 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.4 (With 0.1 being for the host) and the modem is connected using a different set of IP addresses. I have also set the internet connection sharing options according to what is required on the microsoft website for both the internet host and clients. I have both Norton Antivirus and Zonealarm activated on all computers but have set them up to allow access to each other. My problem therefore is, despite my broadband connection working on the one computer, and my network connections working, I cannot get ICS to work.
Im having trouble with my thumbnail previews. I have tried everything mentioned on this forum (clearing/rebuilding thumbnail cache, turned on thumbnail preview, checked/unchecked what I needed to). Ive done this numerous times and yet i still cannot preview thumbnails. Whether it be jpegs, gifs, avis, wmvs etc. I also noticed that my files do not end in .jpg, .gif, .avi when trying to view as thumbnails.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI don't really know how long ago this problem started I didn't really notice it at first but the previews for alt tabbing between programs along with the previews when hovering over the minimized program show up like the alt tabbing in Windows XP. Also my Windows key-tab does not work. Any ideas to what could be causing this? I checked my settings and they seem to be the same as when the previews where working. Is there some setting i could have accidental changed?

Indexing Options (from the Control Panel) says that 34,894 items are indexed and Indexing Options lists Microsoft Office Outlook, Offline Files, and Start Menu and Users in the Included Locations and the Exclude column shows "Default" Opposite Users in the Included locations. If I go to Advanced in Indexing Options and check various common file types like .doc and .xls they are marked (the box is checked) for index file names and contents. if I go to a folder that has a bunch of .xls file and type in the search box the start of a file name that I can plainly see in the list of files in that folder, the full list of files in that folder collapses to a list of one extraneous file that isn't at all what I'm looking for. I have just re-built
the index and still have the sam problem. Needless to say search for file content doesn't work either - since I can't even search for file names.
if I click on Start > Control Panel -- click on Programs -- under Programs and features -- click on. Turn Windows features on or off" -- the box next to ???Indexing Service??? is unchecked. That doesn't make sense to me because the Indexing Options has indexed things.
I just did a clean install on my dell with vista home premium (32). Everything works fine except no music CDs, DVDs, or software CDs will autoplay. I've changed the settings in CP to different selections and it still doesn't work.
