Windows 98 Backup Work On Vista Machine?
May 11, 2008I have 4 PC's running Win XP and use Windows 98 Backup to transfer files and keep things in sync. One of the computers is at a remote location during the summer so I can't use a network to transfer files. All computers have identical file structures and I've found that using Win 98 backup works great since it allows data compression and I simply have to make a backup, transfer the .qic file to a CD and then do a restore. The XP backup software does not allow data compression unless you are backing up to a tape drive.
To get Win 98 backup to work on XP I carefully transfer the appropriate files that are used by Win 98 backup to the c:windowssystem32 directory and, most importantly, I set program compatibility for Windows 98. I am faced with replacing my old laptop with a new one and it seems that it will be difficult to buy one with Win XP. So my question is: Is it possible that Windows 98 backup will work on a Vista machine? Does Vista have program compatibility mode that can be set like XP has?
Uninstall: Programs Don't Work
Mar 28, 2008I recently perchased a new laptop which had vista home basic installed, but most of my programs don't work on it and I can't aford to update the programs I have. I have a XP home basic from my last computer and I loved it as it was easy to use and I didn't need to update all my stuff. I want to install XP on my new computer but have never done this before. have already backed up all my important files on CD, but don't know what to do next. my computer didn't come with any back up discs of any kind.

May 21, 2009The operating system is Window Vista Home Basic SP-1 and it has a 32-bit operating system. I connected the hard drive from my old Dell with Windows 98 to my new computer. I used an Airlink101 3.5??? USB 2.0 SATA/IDE HDD Enclosure, Model AEN-U35SE to make the connection. I am able to access the files on the old hard drive, but the programs don???t work. The whole point was to be able to use MS Word in the old format, rather than the new format, which looks completely different. Other programs don???t work, either. What can I do to make them work?

Apr 21, 2008I had to reinstall Vista after it refused to work with my video card following download of SP1. The previous installation has two user accounts, one for me and one for my wife.
1) Programs no longer work - will I have to reinstall everything?
2) We both need access to our old Outlook PST files. I know these were probably kept in windows.old but is there likely to be any problems accessing them? If so, what do I need to do?
3) Would it be easier to restore the old Vista installation and try a repair? If so, how do I do this?
My machine was OEM but did come with a Vista DVD.

(1) Backup software does not work properly. Always failed with error after burning many DVD-ROMs.
(2) Whenever there is a problem, Vista tries to find solution online, but 10 out of 10 times it found no solution (The function is completely useless but make user more frustrated).
(3) It lags when playing online game (WoW) and have to log out every 5 to 10 minutes. Tried the performance tools to boost the Experience Index Base Score but nothing change. No recommendation or improvement..............................
Windows Mail Folders: Backup Mail, Not Using Vista Backup
Feb 15, 2009I've moved from Outlook Express on my XP desktop to Windows mail on my Vista laptop. I plan on moving to Outlook on both computers, but not until I get this folder thing straightened out. I was able to import my OE mail into Windows Mail ok. Then I had a hard drive failure on my laptop. I had backed up my mail files and I was able to restore my Windows Mail ok.
I had several "Recovered Folders", but they included everything. I moved all of my folders out of the recovered folders and placed them once more under the Inbox. Then I deleted the empty recovered folders.
Now I want to backup my mail, not using the Vista backup, but with a third party. So when I go into my Windows Mail folder in Windows Explorer, I find all of the "recovered folders" are still there. Now they're listed as Local Folders. I can't find the configuration of my folders as I see them in Windows mail at all. I have a "Backup" folder with a "new" folder inside of it with a windows file that is unopenable.

Is it possible to make it, so whenever I drag the windows on my screen, the actual window moves, not the outline of it? Previews of "Running Programs" on my taskbar DOESN'T work anymore. For example I have been trying to uninstall Itunes and everytime I do Windows installer says it is preparing to remove and then it stops and a window come up that says "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." and then another one says I do not have sufficient access to uninstall Itunes and to please contact system administrator.

Someone tell me that these programs blocked by UAC must be updated from the developers to pass the UAC.

Mar 25, 2009I bought a new HP laptop last August and it had Vista on it. Ever since then I have had a zillion crashes. I have Office 2002 (and can't upgrade at this time), and have been trying to run Outlook 24/7 because of the deleted password problem, but it crashes about 3-4 times most days. Also, when I was running IE, it was also crashing very often a day. I switched to Mozilla, so that's no longer an issue! Is this crashing just because I had Outlook 2002? That wouldn't explain the crashing of IE though.

Apr 6, 2009I'd like to transfer my all windows mail / messages from Vista 32 bit to Vista 64 bit after installing clean Vista 64 bit on other Hard Drive which will be inserted as a new C; on the same PC. An old C: drive might / my not be included to this PC. An Easy Transfer is not in my case the best option. The Exporting from Vista Windows Mail does not back up all my folders and sub folders from Windows Mail directory. Not to mention that so called "Imported " folders are not the best to handle.
