Windows Crashing Programs
Mar 25, 2009
I bought a new HP laptop last August and it had Vista on it. Ever since then I have had a zillion crashes. I have Office 2002 (and can't upgrade at this time), and have been trying to run Outlook 24/7 because of the deleted password problem, but it crashes about 3-4 times most days. Also, when I was running IE, it was also crashing very often a day. I switched to Mozilla, so that's no longer an issue! Is this crashing just because I had Outlook 2002? That wouldn't explain the crashing of IE though.

Whenever I try to Create a new mail or even Forward an existing email then
the system creates an empty box for the email but then Windows Mail closes
down (and restarts).
I can synchronise to Send and Receive email (although I cannot create any to
send) so it can't be the email server settings.

My computer seems to crash a lot. Windows catches it and closes down and then I opt to open it in safe mode. Then I have no idea what to do. I looked at Event Viewer and saw lots of errors but I don't know what to do about those. Some were caused by the cpu running on battery and losing power. The last crash happened as I was using Firefox, in Yahoo Calendar. I would love some advice.
By the way, I had the same problem that Meltie had a few weeks ago (not being able to use system restore and I did many of the things you told her to do. I uninstalled Norton's 360, downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes AntiMalware. I haven't figured out how to get Malw. A. to run on a schedule. I have the free program.

I have and Windows Vista Business N laptop (Sony VAIO BX297XP) and on that machine Explorer.exe is crashing very often, which is very annoying. I usally kill the process and then restart the process after that it works again. It started happening after the install of Service Pack 1
Things I have done, and have no effect:
*Updated my drivers
*Defragmented all my disks, which I also have sheduled weekly
*Runned Chkdsk, seems to be fine
*Checked for Viruses with Trend Micro Housecall, I have no viruses
*Checked for Spyware with Windows Defender, found nothing
*With ShellExView I have disabled all non Microsoft Shell Extensions........
When the Explorer crashed I was able to create a dump file of the process. Next I analyzed it with Debugging Tools for Windows and have an debuglog. And that's where i got stuck. I don't understand anything of that debuglog. Beneath I have included it. Does someone understand and see what the problem is?...........

I am using an Asus G1S with Vista Home Premium 32 installed. I've had my computer since June of last Year. It's been working perfectly fine up until about a week ago. Windows Explorer started crashing multiple times and randomly. There has been no reason for it and I can't duplicate it. Sometimes it's after I finish watching a video file in Media Player Classic, sometimes when coming back from sleep mode. I've tried reading for solutions and can't find anything similar to my problem. I've reported and searched for fixes every time but to no avail.
This is the Error report I am receiving.

I suddenly find that any message containing an attachment causes windows mail to go into "not responding" mode when I attempt to open or save the attachment. This happens with all attachments, irrespective of the application. I can right click the file name and "save as" the attachment, which successfully saves it to disc, but this at the same time crashes windows mail as above.

i saw a video of someone i subscribed to on Internet, and he posted a video about a 'god mode' folder, and it was real, except he forgot to put '32 bit only'.., so what it was was you had to made a new empty folder on your desktop, and rename it something like 'godmode.{j74h37858g83e453e4g74c}' but right after i did, the folder disappeared, and windows explorer kept restarting about every 5-10 seconds, and i was just lucky i had another user on this computer which does still work. but i really need that first account back (it was the administrator account). so yeah, any thoughts on this would be helpful. *also, i forgot to note that safe mode doesn't work either; the screen just keeps flashing black every 5-10 seconds, which is obviously still the windows explorer.

I've recorded some clips on my camcorder, and it plays fine in Windows Movie Maker. However, when I drag the video clip into the "Video" section of the timeline, and then click the small "+" sign next to "Video", the program responds with "Windows Movie Maker has stopped working". I tried shortening the video, and the same problem occurs.

im installing AvP 3 and i just cant do it.
apparently for some reason the dvd stops reading...
when i enter "my computer" and try to go into drive d(my dvd) it just crashes,
then i have to wait from a range of 5 mins to 1.5 hours for windows explorer to restart...
and the game installation crashes too...
that happens with other dvds and cds too.
i have changed various dvd drives from various companies and i have updated all of their drivers...the problem is consistent.
im tired of buying new dvd drives and throwing them away for nothing.
obviously its a vista issue cause on my old pc everything works just fine(i have xp on that one).
most of the games i just copy the dvds files on my portable harddrive using my old pc and then do the installations through that harddrive on my current pc...
but this game is a "steam" game and that wont work...
any ideas?
ps:its not a hardware issue, its definately a windows vista issue.

I do not want to see any of the programs at the top of the list of All Programs (especially Internet Explorer). I just want to see the program folders listed, preferably sorted by newest or most recently modified first, by alphabetically would be OK. How to get rid of the 8 programs shown in here? Thanks.

I've just re-installed Windows Vista because I was having start-up issues. I can see all the old programs I had in the Windows.old folder and I'd like to have all those programs on the new install. Is there an easy way to do this, or do i have to manually transfer all the files and then re-install them?

Ive been having a few problems with uninstalling some programs via the add/remove programs tool. For example I have been trying to uninstall Itunes and everytime I do Windows installer says it is preparing to remove and then it stops and a window come up that says "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." and then another one says I do not have sufficient access to uninstall Itunes and to please contact system administrator.
So I spoke to a friend how recommended this forum subject and I followed the Take Ownership steps a few times but to no avail it still does the same thing. I can't update Itunes untill this one is uninstalled!!!!!

I use Vista 32 Ultimate and I have this problem during the startup of Windows: The UAC control stops 2 programs and I'm not able to let these programs load with UAC control active. Tried everything also in Windows defender but no success. I must always confirm and let run these programs clicking on the UAC block tray icon that appear during the load of these 2 programs. Someone tell me that these programs blocked by UAC must be updated from the developers to pass the UAC.

Several programs I have stop working after a few minutes I get the following message "Program_name has stopped working. Windows can check online for a solution to the problem". Two programs I have I get that message as soon as I start the program. I found an available update that addresses this problem, but when I try to install the update, I get a message that this update does not apply to my computer.

I have installed BOINC client and Vista blocks it after logon, so I wanted to enable it, but why the hell should I do it? :o It shows as "not yet classified", but the only active buttons are remove and disable! Meanwhile it scans, so shall I wait until it scans whole drive and then it will be active or what should I do to permanently enable this?

Does this work for anything? I've tried setting the properties of various older Windows and DOS programs, that ran under XP, to run in compatible mode. It doesn't work no matter how I set it.

Just took delivery of my whizzy new PC running Vista Home Premuim (x64).
I'd stuck with my Pentium4 on XP Pro. Well, actually did not have much choice as the old beast died a death. Mobo trashed! I got the message from M$ that HotMail would no longer be supported on Outlook, and have been trying to install Live Mail. I keep getting the error "Sorry, we couldn't install these programs". How helpful is THAT! I finally tracked down a standalone install kit for WLM and now have messenger installed and (eventually) working.

We're on a network and all the pcs only have one user and therefore I am administrator of all. One pc now won't let me access stuff. When I try and go into Windows defender or Manage windows start up programs, a window comes up saying "contact Administrator". ?? Can't access folder options either. There's a virus on it (darn kids) which I'm trying to get rid of (despite having McAfee, Windows defender, Ad-Aware and Stinger). Could it be the virus causing this? which is hard of course to get rid of if I can't have any access to security files.
