Start Menu All Programs List - How To Not Show Recent Programs

Feb 15, 2010

I do not want to see any of the programs at the top of the list of All Programs (especially Internet Explorer). I just want to see the program folders listed, preferably sorted by newest or most recently modified first, by alphabetically would be OK. How to get rid of the 8 programs shown in here? Thanks.

Frequently Run Programs On List

Oct 2, 2007

I would like to stop the Vista Welcome Center from appearing on my frequently used programs list on the start menu, and for the life of me I cannot figure out how to do it. I manually remove it, and it comes back. I shut off the feature from the start properties and it comes back when I turn it back on. I never use the welcome center and the first time it popped up on the PC ( new) I disabled it...or so I thought

Question is why does it keep reappearing on the list and I do not use it. Is it set to be on the list and how can I stop it. I recall in XP I could disable it on a per program basis, but Vista does not seem to have that feature.

Uninstall Missing In Add/remove Programs List

Jun 30, 2008

I have a dell laptop, upgraded from XP to Vista Ultimate with SP1. All programs installed prior to upgrade have lost the ability to be uninstalled. In the add/remove programs list - when clicking on a program I want to remove the uninstall button is missing...on a newer program it will reappear? I have many programs I would like to uninstall but no option to do so. I have read every post I could find without any luck.

Display A List Of Recently Open Files/programs

Aug 15, 2009

I didn't have this annoyance in WinXP but I do in WinVista. It forgets recently opened text files for example, I have a daily "note" file which gets registered in "Recendly Opened Docs" (click Start-->Documents) for ONE sesssion, if I reboot or just work for many hours/next day it's not there and I have to go search in WinExplorer for the d*** file?

Please don't tell me to turn ON Taskbar options "store & display a list of recently open files/prgrams" - those options are both on, also I've been doing computers for decades.Something else is going on here, it's not my settings at fault.Plus, ironically Vista remembers a bunch of OLD files I opened ages ago and still listed as "recently opened" I am tired of looking up for files (in File System/WinExplorer) which I used
to open with TWO CLICKS in WinXP. Yes I can place them all in a conveniently accessible folder, but do NOT want to, it's user's right to keep files where user wants to, especially b/c duplicates/confusion would arise & my system is loaded with a Million files.

Uninstalling Some Programs Via The Add/remove Programs Tool

Apr 24, 2009

Ive been having a few problems with uninstalling some programs via the add/remove programs tool. For example I have been trying to uninstall Itunes and everytime I do Windows installer says it is preparing to remove and then it stops and a window come up that says "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." and then another one says I do not have sufficient access to uninstall Itunes and to please contact system administrator.

So I spoke to a friend how recommended this forum subject and I followed the Take Ownership steps a few times but to no avail it still does the same thing. I can't update Itunes untill this one is uninstalled!!!!!

The UAC Control Stops 2 Programs And I'm Not Able To Let These Programs Load With

Mar 26, 2008

I use Vista 32 Ultimate and I have this problem during the startup of Windows: The UAC control stops 2 programs and I'm not able to let these programs load with UAC control active. Tried everything also in Windows defender but no success. I must always confirm and let run these programs clicking on the UAC block tray icon that appear during the load of these 2 programs. Someone tell me that these programs blocked by UAC must be updated from the developers to pass the UAC.

Folder Access Through Other Programs?

Mar 26, 2008

I can't get access to certain folders, everything was fine until my HD went KaPuT, so I installed a new dual 160GB raid system so I won't lose it all again, the only problem is now that I reloaded Vista Ultimate I can't access anything, I have turned UAC off, and gave permissions, and turned over ownership of everything to me, there is nobody else listed as a user in my system, yet when I use my AutoCad LT 2008 and try to access files, when I click on the directory I need to get into, it does nothing, I can get into other ones, but not any of the ones with little tiny curved arrows in boxes on the lower left. I have access of them in explorer, but not through LT 2008

How To Set Up A "default" Folder For Certain Windows Programs?

Jul 10, 2008

how to set up a "default" folder for certain windows programs? For EXAMPLE--- I have a special personalized "BITMAP image" folder I especially made just for all my screen saver "custom reflections".......just to use for the windows screensaver classic "3-D TEXT" --- (that many people usually use for the digital CLOCK feature) --- which originally showed up for as one of the screen savers for Windows XP.

Anyway....many of you are probably very familiar with this screen saver since its very useful as a clock. Yet I happen to like using my own customized bitmap reflections. In this screen saver's settings you must click on a button called---"Use Custom Reflections" and opens up Windows Explorer. But it would be really NICE if I could make it automatically open right up to that specific image folder! So does anyone here know how to do that?.......

Programs Vs. Programs X86

Apr 28, 2010

In Vista, when I need to add software manually, I'm unsure whether to place it in Programs, or Programs X86. A local retailer tells me that Windows 7 doesn't have the programs divided into these two sections, and doesn't know what 'X86' means. I've looked through the contents of both and can't discern a pattern that offers any clues. What's this about?

Will Not Run Any Programs

Nov 27, 2008

I was wondering if anyone knows what is wrong with my laptop.. Recently my roommates and I got Left 4 Dead, and while playing it would constantly crash to my desktop. It wasn't that big a deal because I could just get back on, but when I shut my computer off, it seemed to have corrupted something, as now I can't do anything on it. One of my roommates had the same thing, where after a restart his screen was messed up, but he was able to clear the problem by installing new graphics drivers. I uninstalled mine and reinstalled new ones, but that didn't fix the problem. I tried it again, but I couldn't get on the internet to get new drivers, so it's using the crappy basic ones. I don't know if this is the right place, and you probably need more info, so feel free to ask me more....I have tried to run a chkdsk, but it will not run at startup (just goes straight to logon). I have been following tutorials around this site, but to no avail. I think I'll give it a few hours then try again and check back here,

Default Programs

Mar 11, 2010

I had a virus a couple of weeks ago and had it removed, but since the removal my computer won't open up any programs without going through default programs. If I click an icon on my desktop default programs pops up and I have to find the right program to open the programs with. I was reading some other posts and saw one that suggested that I download PC Medkit, I did it and it did not work. So now I'm out $40 and my computer still isn't functioning properly. Any suggestions would be extremely helpful.

All Programs Opening Up In IE

Jun 8, 2008

I think I accidentally selected the option to open up all files in Internet Explorer when I got a pop-up requesting it when I tried opening a valid file.

Anyone know how to restore this on Windows Vista?I can't open MOST of my files (especially critical ones), let alone Internet Explorer or Firefox, only this Safari browser! :o

Somehow my Trash Bin icon has disappeared from my desktop and I can't even
click on the Change Desktop Icons link after I right-click -> Personalize
because of the above problem.

IP Email Sent To Programs

Jun 5, 2008

My IP which is Windstream (formerly Alltel) is where I 'go' to 1st check my email so that I 'use THEIR servers' protection to weed out virus, etc.; Windstream says once I 'open' the program, it immediately 'dumps' it into my email program. However, it is sending it to IncrediMail (and NOT to Microsoft Office Outlook 2007). Do I HAVE to 'uninstall' "IncrediMail"? I like some of its 'features', but it gets slow. The 'gold pearl' button that 'shows up in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 is gone...so apparently I do NOT get my email 'dumped' there and I think I'd rather have it there. Using VISTA Business on a 64x2 dual core processor w/3GB of memory. This is getting 'old' and my 'contacts' and/or address book is NOT the same in any of the 3 email programs and I can't seem to get 'information' from one to another. What am I doing wrong?

Run DBase III Programs In A 32-bit?

May 7, 2009

I recently had someone load VMware Workstation 6 on my new Dell desktop, which uses a Vista 64-bit platform. I now have the capability to run a Vista 32-bit platform by clicking on a desktop icon (situated on the 64-bit platform). I need occasionally to run dBase III programs in a 32-bit environment, which obviously a 64-bit environment will not tolerate. I connect to the Internet on a wireless basis, using a RangeMax Wireless-N USB 2.0 Adapter. This Internet connection works fine on the 64-bit platform. In the 32-bit environment, I am able to make a local network connection, but I am not able to connect to the Internet. When in Windows Explorer (32-bit platform), I do not see any USB ports enabled. The individual who installed the VMware said that I should not need a USB port in the 32-bit setup to connect to the Internet. Has anyone had any experience using VMware and establishing Internet connections from other than the base platform?

Running 32 Bit Programs In 64 Bit?

May 8, 2009

I am considering a purchase of a new PC running Windows Vista 64 bit. I have some questions.

Will some of my 32 bit programs run on Vista 64 bit? I am thinking about Firefox 3 and Thunderbird 2 especially. Does Vista 64 have a compatibility mode where I can run 32 bit applications? If yes, does the compatibility mode actually work?

I am planning on some multimedia work recording music and video. I know that I need a second hard drive. One for the OS and one to record to. The model of PC that I am considering has a RAID configuration using two hard drives. How would these drives appear to me in Vista 64 bit? As one drive? As two? If it is one drive, can I set a partition to have the two drives I need? If so, are partitions difficult to setup?

What are your opinions on the 64 bit system? Is this the future and eventually everything will be going 64 bit, or will it fade out as a good idea that never happened? The PC I am looking at is expensive and I wish to know if it will be useful for a long time.

Is Vista 64 going to be the current OS and more and more companies will be supporting it? Is Vista going to be around for a long time? I am seeing buzz about Windows 7. When would Windows 7 be out and would it require 64 bit?
