How To Able To Run WinHlp32 To Make Work For Older Programs
Jun 1, 2008
I need to be able to run WinHlp32 to make Help work for older programs. Microsoft has a web site Download details: WinHlp32.exe for Windows Vista that provides a copy of WinHlp32 that is supposed to run on Vista. However, when I try to install the x86 version of it, it fails with the error message "Installer encountered an error 0x8007000d The data is invalid. Has anybody else tried to install the x86 version of WinHlp32?

I need to make videos from XP play, and I think I need CODECS, but I downloaded the vista service codec pack, and it didn't help. I am pretty much not very good at computers, but I just want to be able to play my old video files from XP, and I need to know what to do.

Does this work for anything? I've tried setting the properties of various older Windows and DOS programs, that ran under XP, to run in compatible mode. It doesn't work no matter how I set it.

I have a computer Inspiron 531 w/Microsoft Office (Business) VISTA; trying to learn, but all on my own. Sync? Is that something that would allow me to enter a 'contact' and have it appear in all 3 email programs or will I have to type them in individually into each? $1200 is a 'big' investment for me, on a 'set' income. Tired of getting 'into' something ONLY to find it is a 'sales pitch'. I should NOT have to 'buy' additional programs to make VISTA run...that is something that Microsoft should provide somehow! I'm sure all these 'programs' you 'need to buy' are Microsoft related. Bill Gates doesn't understand that NOT everybody is as 'brilliant' as he...biggest mistake though was 'unleashing' VISTA without more 'kinks' worked out...but $$$ is $$$ and $$$ is "His GOD" - NOT mine!

I searched, but couldn't find anything "on point."
I have a USB Logitech mouse. For reasons too lengthy to get into here, I want to hook it up via PS2.
So, I hooked it up with an adaptor. On bootup, the computer appears to recognize the mouse, as PS2 detection is enabled in the BIOS and the mouse's red light comes on.
However, when I get to my login page of Vista, the mouse doesn't work to control the pointer, and the red light is off. Even when I used the keyboard to just hit enter and log in as the "guest," the pointer will not respond when I got to the desktop.
Do I need to 'activate' the PS2 in Vista somehow?

If you are like me and have a NAS device on your network that is not compatible with Windows Vista, now you can tweak Windows Vista to make it work again. You do not even have to wait for your device manufacturer to release a new firmware any more! Just follow these steps below:
Click on the Start Button and key in secpol.msc in the search box and hit Enter.
When the Local Security Policy editor has loaded, expand Local Policies and select Security Options.
Scroll through the list and locate "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level." Right click on this setting and select Properties....

Ever wonder why you get network authentication errors when you are trying access a mapped network share from a process that was elevated by UAC? Josh over at WindowsConnected has a great article on how you can fix this annoying issue:
On Windows Vista when you map a drive under your admin account you will find that your mapped drive is not available after you switch to your full token via a RunAs or Consent dialog. This is by design because there are actually two tokens in play here. What happens is the LSA recognized that you are admin at logon and creates two logons. The first with a "filtered" token or non-admin which is used to render your desktop and the other containing your full token to be available after consent dialogs.
Because there are two separate logons there are separate logon ID's. When network shares are mapped they are linked to the current logon session for the current process token. Meaning you don't have access to the network drive from the alternate logon. This can come into play with logon scripts and a number of other areas where you may require access to a network share from both tokens....

The operating system is Window Vista Home Basic SP-1 and it has a 32-bit operating system. I connected the hard drive from my old Dell with Windows 98 to my new computer. I used an Airlink101 3.5??? USB 2.0 SATA/IDE HDD Enclosure, Model AEN-U35SE to make the connection. I am able to access the files on the old hard drive, but the programs don???t work. The whole point was to be able to use MS Word in the old format, rather than the new format, which looks completely different. Other programs don???t work, either. What can I do to make them work?

Do "tweak" programs which are supposed to help with Internet connection speeds and overall throughput really help? I'm currently using a cable modem setup in a home office situation. There are a lot of times where the throughput slows considerably and I've often wondered if one of these tweak programs would be helpful.I decided to experiment a little with Tweak VI, but honestly couldn't tell whether or not it was helping. (If so, not much, in my humble opinion.)I'm wondering if other Vista users out there have been able to find various third-party tweak programs helpful?

I had to reinstall Vista after it refused to work with my video card following download of SP1. The previous installation has two user accounts, one for me and one for my wife.
1) Programs no longer work - will I have to reinstall everything?
2) We both need access to our old Outlook PST files. I know these were probably kept in windows.old but is there likely to be any problems accessing them? If so, what do I need to do?
3) Would it be easier to restore the old Vista installation and try a repair? If so, how do I do this?
My machine was OEM but did come with a Vista DVD.

My restore point function seems to be working fine however I have only a few dates. In reading about this issue I find mention of some box to click to show restore points older than five days. I'm running Vista Business and do not see that selection. I have verified and set 20 gig of 160 gig HD for restore point storage. How do I see or get restore points older than a few days?

I am presently using 96SE. my ISP no longer supports this version as do some programs....my unit is not powerful enough for either xp or vista I am in my eighties and some of my colleagues tell me that vista has a pretty high learning curve, have found both windows 95 and 95se very user friendly. I can get a new unit from Dell loaded with either XP or Vista, i would like to keep current but do not want to become overwhelmed by new technology. I am not a power user but did not find the older window operating system too challenging, the tasks i presently perform are pretty basic my question is given my age and experience level could i handle Vista or should i opt for the XP version.

When I drag a window on my screen, only window's outline drags, and not the windows itself. Is it possible to make it, so whenever I drag the windows on my screen, the actual window moves, not the outline of it? Previews of "Running Programs" on my taskbar DOESN'T work anymore. It doesn't preview them to me anymore.

Ive been having a few problems with uninstalling some programs via the add/remove programs tool. For example I have been trying to uninstall Itunes and everytime I do Windows installer says it is preparing to remove and then it stops and a window come up that says "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." and then another one says I do not have sufficient access to uninstall Itunes and to please contact system administrator.
So I spoke to a friend how recommended this forum subject and I followed the Take Ownership steps a few times but to no avail it still does the same thing. I can't update Itunes untill this one is uninstalled!!!!!

I use Vista 32 Ultimate and I have this problem during the startup of Windows: The UAC control stops 2 programs and I'm not able to let these programs load with UAC control active. Tried everything also in Windows defender but no success. I must always confirm and let run these programs clicking on the UAC block tray icon that appear during the load of these 2 programs. Someone tell me that these programs blocked by UAC must be updated from the developers to pass the UAC.
