If you are like me and have a NAS device on your network that is not compatible with Windows Vista, now you can tweak Windows Vista to make it work again. You do not even have to wait for your device manufacturer to release a new firmware any more! Just follow these steps below:
Click on the Start Button and key in secpol.msc in the search box and hit Enter.
When the Local Security Policy editor has loaded, expand Local Policies and select Security Options.
Scroll through the list and locate "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level." Right click on this setting and select Properties....
I have a "storage" drive (seagate sata 3.0gb, 320gb) with lots of files which was previously used (as a storage drive) with my xp pro 32 install, and after that, with my linux system via fuse+ntfs-3g. This drive is mountable in linux still, and all files appear to be intact. I would like to share this storage drive between my dual boot Vista Ultimate/Debian Etch (both 64) system, but if it is connected while trying to boot vista, vista will stop after the "loading" screen, and rest eternally on a black screen, before any welcome logo or logon screen.Without this drive connected, vista boots fine. Without my linux drive connected, and with the storage drive connected, vista still will not boot. Vista even sees my linux drive and all its partitions, but will not boot with the storage drive attached. I've tried booting and *then* connecting the drive, but it doesn't show up anywhere at all (my computer, device manager, disk management).I've searched EVERYWHERE for the last several months (ever since i bought vista near the end of september '07) and have found absolutely Zero clues as to why this is happening or how to fix it.
Recently, after varying times of general computer usage (internet, e-mail) ranging from 5 minutes to an hour, I'll get a BSOD, with the above title. I'll attach the dump files, and include the code from it below. I've tried some troubleshooting of my own. I've run memtest86+ on each of my 4 1-gig RAM modules, all clean. I've run Prime95, clean. I've installed new video drivers. I've run a diskcheck, and used Western Digital's diagnostic utility, clean. The culprit always is ntfs.sys. Should I try to repair my windows, or replace the ntfs.sys with a new one?. Also, I don't have any readboost of USB storage devices plugged in.

Ever wonder why you get network authentication errors when you are trying access a mapped network share from a process that was elevated by UAC? Josh over at WindowsConnected has a great article on how you can fix this annoying issue:
On Windows Vista when you map a drive under your admin account you will find that your mapped drive is not available after you switch to your full token via a RunAs or Consent dialog. This is by design because there are actually two tokens in play here. What happens is the LSA recognized that you are admin at logon and creates two logons. The first with a "filtered" token or non-admin which is used to render your desktop and the other containing your full token to be available after consent dialogs.
Because there are two separate logons there are separate logon ID's. When network shares are mapped they are linked to the current logon session for the current process token. Meaning you don't have access to the network drive from the alternate logon. This can come into play with logon scripts and a number of other areas where you may require access to a network share from both tokens....
In the corporate world, a lot of time is spent on locking down computers to minimize the risk of confidential information leaving the company. With the popularity of USB storage devices in recent years the problem for large corporations has exploded. Almost all users want to use USB storage devices to move data around. With the size of USB storage devices increasing so much in recent years, the risk is increasing as more and more data could possibly be stolen or lost accidentally. In companies, USB storage devices have been banned completely and disabled from use on company computers.
In Windows Vista there is an alternative that will allow your corporate users to be able to read from USB storage devices but not write any data to them. Effectively turning on USB storage devices for all users but making them read-only. This way users can still read information off of USB storage devices that a third-party vendor may provide data on while preventing the employee from writing any data back to the storage device.
To setup read only USB storage device operation, follow these steps below:
Click on the Start Button and type in Regedit and hit Enter.
Navigate through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControl.
Right click on Control and select New and then Key. Call the new key StorageDevicePolicies.
Right click on StorageDevicePolicies and select New and then Dword. Call the new dword WriteProtect...
I installed an update today (USB composite device dc3d) and it changed my DVD RW drive from "hard disk drive" to "devices with removable storage" I think DVD RW drives are supposed to be classified as "devices with removable storage" I was wondering if this #1 Matters #2 is correct #3 will cause any problems. Any thoughts? What does your "my computer" view show your DVD RW drive type as.
I am looking for some network storage device. I was looking into the Hp media smart server but too expensive. Some thing that can be accessed independently from each PC on the network.
I just purchased a new laptop with Vista home edition. I connected to my network no problem and have access to the internet. But I can not find any other of the devices on the network. When I go into Network I can see the router name. I have a workgroup name on the network. But when I click on workgroup, it shows me a selection called workgroup but there is no place to enter the workgroup name. The other devices on the network all have shared writes and all other devices can see them.
Dell Inspiron running Vista Ultimate Vista SP1. connected wirelessly to my DLink DIR 655 Router. I can only sometimes see other Vista PCs on my home network but cannot access the shared folders. I cannot see a Linkstation NAS at all. And only get to it via it's IP address. None of the host names work. Yes, sharing is enabled on all devices. Firewall is Live OneCare v2. The other PCs are fine. I've even logged into another network (physical location) and had the same problem so I'm pretty sure it's this PC. Problem started after SP1 and OneCare 2.0 were upgraded, although I have uninstalled OneCare with no success (and since reinstalled) Here is an example of me pinging my NAS device C:UsersBarry> ping 192.168.0.143 Pinging 192.168.0.143 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.0.143: bytes=32 time=6ms TTL=64 Reply from 192.168.0.143: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64..............
I am Vista Home Premium SP1. When connected to the network, I can not send problem Reports, the Help has Xs through the images, and I can not connect to other shared devices. I can go online to bing.com and several other websites. But I can not download java or flash updates, it says I do not any an internet connection. I also can not download any new Microsoft updates. If I install IE8, then the browser can no longer go online. AVG is the only ant-virus installed, and the firewalls are turned off. The machine can not be formated and reinstalled
Reviewing Services on my Vista Ultimate 64-bit machine I noticed that the DNS Client is disabled? I have a wireless router configured to the laptop and to the printer and have for some times been experiencing disconnection problems to the laptop and loosing the printer connectivity completely until I unplug the router, wait, and plug it back in--which will restore connectivity until the next time.
Shouldn't the DNS Client be enabled? Also noticed in Services I found HP Network Devices Support is set to Automatic (Delayed Start). Could this be what is causing the printer (C7280 All-in-One) to write so many (hundreds in days) .log entries in WindowsTemp?
Just got a nice wireless keyboard and mouse. Problem is, when the machine is rebooted, these devices dont work anymore. I have to unplug the USB cable of the remote sensing unit, and plug it back in to get the devices to work. Needless to say, this is a pain. This is a Micro Innovations wireless keyboard and mouse, and Im using the latest Vista drivers (according to them).
The new Network Map in Windows Vista allows you to easily create a map of all computers on your network and see how they are connected. This works by using the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) protocol that is only part of Windows Vista.
To help users of mixed environments of both Windows Vista and Windows XP, Microsoft has released the Link Layer Topology Discovery Responder for Windows XP. This will make your Windows XP computers show up in the Network Map in Windows Vista.
This package contains the Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) responder. The network map on a computer running Windows Vista shows a graphical view of the computers and devices on your network and how they are connected by using the LLTD protocol. The LLTD responder must be installed on a computer running Windows XP before it can be detected and appear on the network map. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.
I searched, but couldn't find anything "on point."
I have a USB Logitech mouse. For reasons too lengthy to get into here, I want to hook it up via PS2.
So, I hooked it up with an adaptor. On bootup, the computer appears to recognize the mouse, as PS2 detection is enabled in the BIOS and the mouse's red light comes on.
However, when I get to my login page of Vista, the mouse doesn't work to control the pointer, and the red light is off. Even when I used the keyboard to just hit enter and log in as the "guest," the pointer will not respond when I got to the desktop.
Am trying to do a upgrade install from Vista Home Premium to Windows7 Ultimate. I downloaded Windows7 Upgrade Advisor Beta and ran it with no issues flagged. Went on to do the install but get stopped by this; Upgrading Windows will affect the following devices and/or programs: These devices might not work properly after the upgrade. Before upgrading, we recommend updating the drivers for these devices. Cancel the upgrade, open Control Panel and search for "update device drivers", or go to the device manufacturer's website to search for updated drivers.

I need to be able to run WinHlp32 to make Help work for older programs. Microsoft has a web site Download details: WinHlp32.exe for Windows Vista that provides a copy of WinHlp32 that is supposed to run on Vista. However, when I try to install the x86 version of it, it fails with the error message "Installer encountered an error 0x8007000d The data is invalid. Has anybody else tried to install the x86 version of WinHlp32?
i have all m network sharing turned on, I have followed a bunch of online tutorials. I still cannot share or recieve files on my vista computer. It works fine for my XP computer, just type in the path and its done. Not so with the Vista machine.
No vista home premium x64 printer driver for Toshiba e-studio 150 copier/printer. Searched for hours. Other than copying files to a networked computer, isn't there some kind of workaround possible through networking so I can just shoot stuff directly to the printer? (Of course the normal networked printer routine won't work without a Vista 64 driver). Also tried Vmware virtual machine but it says the printer is trying to scan when it's not, probably because Vista won't stop trying to communicate with it. (ms virtual pc doesn't work on vista home premium x64).
Printer is too expensive to become a paperweight. user Russell found this workaround for another printer...Found this on google while working on this issue myself and came back to post what I got working. Setup the port as LPR, queue name print with byte counting on. Use the built in x64 2k3 driver for the Ricoh Aficio AP3800C PS. So far I have Color, Duplexing, Tray options working properly with this driver, but the finisher doesn't want to staple... better than it being a large paperweight though.
My home network consists of a DSL Modem, Wireless Router, 5 computers (One Computer is a notebook with Vista Home Basic), and a HP840C printer, which is connected as a network printer. Everything works fine except the one notebook with Vista Home Basic. An Acer aspire with preinstalled OS. Microsoft says that Acer is the OEM and responsible for the Vista Home Basic OS. Acer suggests updating driver. HP says the driver is OK. All the computers see the network and can communicate and access the internet just fine. My only problem is printing with the Vista. That computer will print ok after I install printer and driver, but after I shut the computer off and restart, I can't print. The print jobs get stuck in the print queue and nothing happens. The print jobs remain in the queue until I cancel them. If I connect the printer directly to the notebook's USB port it works fine. The computers with win98se OS and with XP OS have no problem.
I have spent the better part of two weekends trying to get my XP w/ Service Pack 2 desktop to network with my Vista Home Premium laptop. Both computers are in the same workgroup (WORKGROUP). I have turned off all firewalls, both software-based and on my router. On the XP computer, I have installed the LLTD protocol. The XP computer shows the Vista computer in the workgroup, but when I try to access it it tells me it is not accessible because I "might not have permission to use this network resource."
In Vista, the XP computer shows up in the Network Map, but when I pass the cursor over it, it stays as an arrow; it does not change to a hand. Furthermore, in the Vista Network window, it shows the router and the Vista computer itself, but not the XP computer. I also cannot access the XP computer directly by typing \ and its name. Each computer is able the ping the other. I am using a Linksys WRT54G-TM router. I am an administrator on both computers.
I have been using this forum as a guest for quite sometime now and decided to join the forum as I really like the community here. I have an issue w/ a home network I have that includes 3 total computers: Comp A: 1 Vista Home X32 PC (that is wired into a WRT54G router) w/ Windows firewall Comp B: 1 Windows XP Professional Laptop w/ Zone alarm (free) firewall connected to the network via wireless Comp C: 1 Vista Home Premium X64 Laptop w/ Windows firewall connected to the network via wireless Here are some notes to highlight what is going on:Originally, Comp A and Comp B were networked together with no issues Yesterday, I purchased Comp C and am trying to include this computer into the networkComp A and Comp B can communicate w/ no issues and both can access Comp C w/ no issues Comp C can access Comp B, but CAN NOT acess Comp AAll comps can PING each other w/ no issues When Comp C tries to Access Comp A, this Error message is displayed: 'Comp A' is not accessible.
You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer. All Comps (A,B, and C) have access to the (1) network printer w/ no issues Things I have tried to remedy the issue:I have tried to turn off firewalls for Comp A and Comp C Spent a huge amount of time reseaching on the internet to no avail Network discovery is on for Comp A and Comp C I tried to edit the settings for my WRT54G router, but didn't know what to do I know there are some other things I have tried, but can't remember exactly.
I've searched everywhere looking for the fix to the "Local Only" network problem. I've had it a couple days and can't find why I can't get through to the internet. I have disabled IPv6 and tried static ip which I don't think works with my router and some registry fixes and cmd commands. I'm connected through Ethernet wire so it's not a wireless thing. I don't know if I should switch back to XP Pro or maybe buy a new network card. .....The first is if I set my ip static and the second without it. It seems that if I don't set my ip static then it does not find the router and only finds unidentified network while if I set my ip static it does but I don't believe my router works with setting static ip from the computer. I can also see the other computers linked into my router but just can't access the internet making me believe it is something with the compatibility with the router and Vista. Okay here it is, this is all without IPv6. Ive just had broadband connected to my house. Currently I have a network consisting of four computers connected through an internal switch on one of my computers in one of the bedrooms for ease of cabling. The computer with the broadband modem has been chosen as it is newest and is closest to the telephone line socket. It has two network cards, one connected to the modem and the other to the rest of the network. Independantly, the network connections are running fine (all computers can see each other and transfer data properly) and the internet connection is working well for the computer connected directly to the modem.
The network is setup using Static IP Addresses 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.4 (With 0.1 being for the host) and the modem is connected using a different set of IP addresses. I have also set the internet connection sharing options according to what is required on the microsoft website for both the internet host and clients. I have both Norton Antivirus and Zonealarm activated on all computers but have set them up to allow access to each other. My problem therefore is, despite my broadband connection working on the one computer, and my network connections working, I cannot get ICS to work.
I have a Windows XP Home desktop connected to a printer via USB and, I have a Windows Vista Premium laptop connected through a wireless network. Print jobs initiated from the laptop hang up in the print queue with a print error, and also show up on the desktop under the print jobs as a print error. Print jobs iniated from the desktop work just fine. Please help with a solution to my wireless network printing problem.
it only happens when sending pictures from my work email addy to my home computer. RE: Emailng jpg pix 100kb or less from work that has Windows 2000 with Outlook 2003 to my personal email addresses on my home computer (Vista) with Comcast & Yahoo. If I email pictures from my work email addy (either attached or inserted into the email body) to my personal email addy and hope to see them on my home computer using Windows Mail with Comcast, the email comes in without the attached or inserted picture and there is no message that there was a problem. I made sure I'm on the safe list and not on the blocked list. When I am at work and open Comcast email on the internet, the attachments are with the emails and open fine. When I am at home and open Comcast email on the internet instead of via Windows Mail, there are no attached or inserted pictures. When at home, the same emails with attached photos sent to my Yahoo email are delivered and open fine.
Every morning I wake up, I have to re-start my computer in order to get Firefox or Internet explorer to work. Have tried all below with both wired and wireless connection. All other functions, icons and various do-dads work, just connecting. If I happen to pass out and forget to logout of either Mozilla or IE, the screen I was on stays up but when I hit re-fresh(IE) or reload (mozilla) the problem pops up.
1. Wake up and touch mouse, desktop comes up, no problem
2. Check network connection, all seems good. Network icon shows full connection, you see the globe symbol, all good.
3. Try to access either Internet Explorer, or Mozilla Firefox.
4. I.E. says it cannot connect and Mozilla says, well it says nothing at all except for "done" in bottom left corner of screen, but leaves a blank screen.
5. Have checked my power settings, and have made sure that both plugged in and on battery that the computer is not set to sleep. Never sleep............
Windows Vista Premium. I'm able to select a Photo in Windows Photo Gallery and click Email which attaches the photo to a blank email. I can then fill in the Address and words...and send it. But.....I can't seem to Create the email, then click the "attach paper clip icon" and open Windows Photo Gallery to select the photo for the attachment. I'm sure it's obvious I'm not very sharp with this stuff but I'm hoping someone can give me a simple method to do this. All else seems to work OK with Vista and Windows Vista Mail.
