Disable USB Storage Device Write (make Them Read-only)

Mar 22, 2007

In the corporate world, a lot of time is spent on locking down computers to minimize the risk of confidential information leaving the company.  With the popularity of USB storage devices in recent years the problem for large corporations has exploded. Almost all users want to use USB storage devices to move data around.  With the size of USB storage devices increasing so much in recent years, the risk is increasing as more and more data could possibly be stolen or lost accidentally. In companies, USB storage devices have been banned completely and disabled from use on company computers.

In Windows Vista there is an alternative that will allow your corporate users to be able to read from USB storage devices but not write any data to them. Effectively turning on USB storage devices for all users but making them read-only.  This way users can still read information off of USB  storage devices that a third-party vendor may provide data on while preventing the employee from writing any data back to the storage device.

To setup read only USB storage device operation, follow these steps below:

Click on the Start Button and type in Regedit and hit Enter.

Navigate through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControl.

Right click on Control and select New and then Key.  Call the new key StorageDevicePolicies.

Right click on StorageDevicePolicies and select New and then Dword. Call the new dword WriteProtect...

Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device

Jan 1, 2009

Problem ejecting USB Mass Storage Device - My Drive M: See my System Specs. I have just finished a session between my C: and M: Drives, well at least I thought so. When I tried to Safely Remove Hardware, I get the following Error window;

Questions;
Is there a way or shortcut that I can use to find which programs or windows are still using the Drive? Will potential problems result if I just do a 'hard' close-down?, ie >Start>Switch Off button ='Closes all open Programs, Shuts down Windows, turns off Computer'. Will the same apply if I do a >Start>Restart, close-down and restart procedure? I have attempted to Safely Remove Drive M: via the Icon in the Notification Tray, and through Device Manager, but the results as shown above are the same. Storage Device : Reach My Backups

May 4, 2009

My desktop with WinXP installed seriously crashed. I had backed up all on a Seagate Free Agent storage device. I started using my laptop, with Vista Home Premium installed, for all my computer projects. I had backed these up but when I added the storage device to the laptop it told me I would have to format the drive before I could use it with the laptop. Of course, then all my backups would be lost. How can I get around this in order to install and/or reach my backups from the storage device to the laptop. I thought I'd be able to carry these backups from computer to computer but I find that is not the case.

Make NAS (Network Attached Storage) Devices Work

Sep 1, 2006

If you are like me and have a NAS device on your network that is not compatible with Windows Vista, now you can tweak Windows Vista to make it work again. You do not even have to wait for your device manufacturer to release a new firmware any more! Just follow these steps below:

Click on the Start Button and key in secpol.msc in the search box and hit Enter.

When the Local Security Policy editor has loaded, expand Local Policies and select Security Options.

Scroll through the list and locate "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level." Right click on this setting and select Properties....

External Storage Device: File Backup

Mar 31, 2010

I occasionally (every 3 months) back up my hard drives (I am using three computers, all similarly configured) to an external storage device. I tend to back up the My Documents folders somewhat more frequently (monthly). My two desktops are Vista 64s, and the laptop is a Vista 32-bit. I use the laptop as the master, so to speak, and will occasionally update the My Documents folders of the desktops from this machine.

I sometimes overwrite the same file on the desktops with an older file from the laptop. What I would really like is an easy to use piece of software that updates a file only if it is newer (later time stamp) than what is being updated. This would run much more quickly, and also prevent me from overwriting newer files.

Long Delay In Recognizing USB Mass Storage Device

Mar 23, 2008

I have a USB mass storage device, and it takes vista around 30 minutes to recognize the two partitions (one is a 64 MB FAT32 partition and the other is a 111 GB FAT32 partition). On my old slow computer, XP will recognize the drive partitions within seconds. Is there some setting I need to change in vista to get this to work correctly? This is a drive for a digital music player, and I've tried different drives, so I know the drive itself isn't the problem.

How To Disable Read Only When Saving?

Nov 19, 2009

I have just purchased a new hard drive with Vista / Windows 7. I am a full time journalist and becasue I am so familiar with MS Office Word 2003 I had it loaded on my new drive. My trouble is after I save a Word file I alaways back it up on my external hard drive for saftey sake.

Whenever I attempt to do this now, however, I always get the dialogue box "This is a read only file". How do I get rid of this annoying, frustrating problem. I simply want to back up a word document on an external drive ... so why won't it let me do it. And why does it stipulate that it is a "Read only file" when I never saved it originally as such?

Can't Disable Read Only Properties

May 24, 2009

I am trying to delete files from my Sansa Express which I use as an external USB drive. When I try to delete at the folder level, Vista tells me the "storage is write-protected" and that I should remove write-protection and try again. I am able to delete the files individually, however, with no problem at all. When I go to Properties, the folders are read-only. The individual files are not read-only, and they delete fine individually. The problem is only encountered when I select a folder and try to delete it. I can not disable read-only from Properties, because it is grayed out. It may or may not be relevant that most of these folders were loaded onto the drive from my other computer, which runs XP. However, not all those folders are running into this problem: only the ones which say "read-only" in Properties.

Things I've already tried: There is no write-protection switch on the device. There is a hold switch, and that is definitely in the off position. So a switch is not the issue here. I've gone through the lengthy and confusing process of taking ownership of files before, but there is no way to do that here. The only tab in the Properties screen is "General" and there's nothing in there I can click on or change. I've also tried running Windows Explorer as Administrator, but that doesn't help either. Formatting the drive is not a practical solution for me, because I can't just format it every time I encounter this problem.

Cannot Write To Drive "Media Is Write Protected"

May 5, 2008

This seems to be a new development, and I'm stumped. I've got three internal hard drives- one housing Vista Ultimate x64, one housing Ubuntu 8.04 x64, and one being used for storage for both OS's. Up until recently they've cooperated nicely. Now, the storage drive (drive E:) will not let me write to it. I cannot rename, delete, cut, or write any new files to any part of that drive. That's troublesome, since that's where I send all of my downloads to!

Even earlier in this session of windows it was working nicely, I was able to download a torrent of the recent Ubuntu 8.04 release (legal and distributed from ubuntu.com). I started a session of Assassin's Creed (a game), and now that I've quit that, I cannot write to the drive. Specifically, the error is: "The disk is write protected. Remove the write protection or use another disk.".........

Unknown USB Device Without Any Device Plugged

May 1, 2009

I'm running Home Premium 64 on a Sony Vaio Laptop (CS170F). I'm having a curious problem: Yesterday I plugged into the machine the dongle of my wireless logitech mouse, and for some reason the machine said "Your unknown device is ready to use" (my OS is in spanish, the messages may not be accurately translated). Since then, an annoying message pops every few seconds warning about an "unrecognized USB device", that "didn't work as expected". The best part is this, if I click on the tray icon, sometimes the informative dialog window is emply, an other times shows all the USB ports in the system plus one extra with a "unknown UBS device", even without any device plugged into the system. I've tryed removing the unknown device from the device manager, but it shows up again.

Write A Macro For Sleep

Jun 25, 2009

I have Vista 64 bit. My PC stopped going to sleep when I pressed the sleep button (in fact it crashed); to cut a long story short, I eventually traced the problem to a new sound card I'd installed - disabling the card allows sleep to work normally. (I see that the card manufacturer, M-Audio, includes a note in its FAQ to the effect that none of its cards will work with sleep. Great.)

I'm now faced with the prospect of having to navigate through Control Panel and the Device Manager to disable the card every time I want to put the PC to sleep, and then the same performance to re-enable to card when I wake it up.

Does anyone know if it's possible to run a series of commands when the sleep button is pressed so that it disables the card before going to sleep? I suppose I'm asking if there's a way that someone who's only semi-technical could write a macro and apply it to the button - or is this just cloud cuckoo land?

BackUp - Brand New DVD Is Write Protected?

Sep 30, 2009

I have a brand new Dell Inspiron 545s which is equipped with a DVD +/- RW drive. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit. Today, I attempted to do my first back-up. I am using a brand new pack of Memorex DVD-RW disks which have never been used before.

Upon clicking on the backup utility, it instructed me to insert a blank DVD into the drive, which I did. The next instructions to appear indicated that the disk needed to be formatted (why?? since this was a brand-new disk??), but I let it go through the disk formatting process anyway. Upon reaching the end of the formatting process, I then received a message that the backup was proceeding.

The backup continued until it was approx. one-third completed (according to the shaded progress bar) and a total of two of my DVD's had been used up to that point. When prompted, I inserted a third disk and was, again, instructed to format it. However, this time I received a message that "Windows was unable to complete the formatting process because the disk was write protected". Having no idea why this would have occurred,I attempted to use another disk, but got the same message, and I finally exited the backup process without being able to complete it.

External HDD Drive Write Protected On X64

It's weird, because sometimes I can write to the HDD on vista x64 and sometimes it says "this disk is write protected..." Please keep in mind i don't want and i can't format the disk because there's to many important files on it and I don't have the space to backup them. Is there a solution without re-formatting the disk. ps. When i bought it, it was formatted as FAT32, on my xp laptop, I changed it to NTFS.
