View 8 RepliesIn the corporate world, a lot of time is spent on locking down computers to minimize the risk of confidential information leaving the company.  With the popularity of USB storage devices in recent years the problem for large corporations has exploded. Almost all users want to use USB storage devices to move data around. With the size of USB storage devices increasing so much in recent years, the risk is increasing as more and more data could possibly be stolen or lost accidentally. In companies, USB storage devices have been banned completely and disabled from use on company computers.
In Windows Vista there is an alternative that will allow your corporate users to be able to read from USB storage devices but not write any data to them. Effectively turning on USB storage devices for all users but making them read-only. This way users can still read information off of USB storage devices that a third-party vendor may provide data on while preventing the employee from writing any data back to the storage device.
To setup read only USB storage device operation, follow these steps below:
Click on the Start Button and type in Regedit and hit Enter.
Navigate through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControl.
Right click on Control and select New and then Key. Call the new key StorageDevicePolicies.
Right click on StorageDevicePolicies and select New and then Dword. Call the new dword WriteProtect...
I posted this in general, but it does not appear there so I am posting it here too. I have a desktop PC with VISTA and a laptop with VISTA. The DT is connected to a router via a cable. The laptop is connected to the router via wireless. I have set all permissions that I can find and share wherever I can find. I can't access files on either PC from either PC. I get the message "Windows can not access \Lu-PCC" or what ever folder I try to access. I can get into the folder alled "public", but my files are not in that folder on either PC. The permissions for Lu-PCC is everyone full control, change and read
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo this all started with running NewSID from SysInternals on my Vista64 machine. Yes I knew the risks, but it seemed 50/50 from what I had read on other forums around the Internet so I went ahead and took my chances with it. Sure enough, NewSID hung up just like a lot of people said it would, and I was forced to kill the process and restart. NewSID seemed to do its job, as my PC thought it had been started for the first time, only some things were very odd.
My original Administrator account had been demoted to a guest account. This is the only account available at my log in screen. Looking under my Users folder, I see my old user account folder jakt, and a second folder called jakt.jakt-pc. (This is in the format of <user>.<domain>) All my data remains. Files are all there, programs all still run fine, drivers still intact. Under my Local Users and Groups in Computer Management, I see only two users in my Administrators usergroup. S-1-5-21-XXXXXXXXXX-XXXXXXX-1000 and S-1-5-21-XXXXXXXXXX-XXXXXX-500. I believe this is my previous SID before running the NewSID utility. No clue where this came from, or how to log in under this account, or if it is even possible to use this account.......
This seems to be a new development, and I'm stumped. I've got three internal hard drives- one housing Vista Ultimate x64, one housing Ubuntu 8.04 x64, and one being used for storage for both OS's. Up until recently they've cooperated nicely. Now, the storage drive (drive E:) will not let me write to it. I cannot rename, delete, cut, or write any new files to any part of that drive. That's troublesome, since that's where I send all of my downloads to!
Even earlier in this session of windows it was working nicely, I was able to download a torrent of the recent Ubuntu 8.04 release (legal and distributed from ubuntu.com). I started a session of Assassin's Creed (a game), and now that I've quit that, I cannot write to the drive. Specifically, the error is: "The disk is write protected. Remove the write protection or use another disk.".........
Network of two computers, a desktop running vista home premium and a laptop running vista basic. I am the only user on each of the computers, my user account name is the same on both computers and I don't need a password to log on. File sharing is 'on', password protected sharing is 'off', and I have shared the 'documents' folder on both machines
When I view my network I see both computers "PAUL-PC" and PAUL-LAPTOP", when I select the one I'm not working on I see "Users", "Documents" and "Printers". When I select "Documents" I see "\PAUL-LAPTOPDocuments is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource....... etc."
I am trying to format a cd that I bought (memorex) vista says it cannot be formatted because of its write protection. Unfortunately this is my only blank cd left so I can't use a new one. Is there a way of forcing a format? Or removing the write protection?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have Vista 64 bit. My PC stopped going to sleep when I pressed the sleep button (in fact it crashed); to cut a long story short, I eventually traced the problem to a new sound card I'd installed - disabling the card allows sleep to work normally. (I see that the card manufacturer, M-Audio, includes a note in its FAQ to the effect that none of its cards will work with sleep. Great.)
I'm now faced with the prospect of having to navigate through Control Panel and the Device Manager to disable the card every time I want to put the PC to sleep, and then the same performance to re-enable to card when I wake it up.
Does anyone know if it's possible to run a series of commands when the sleep button is pressed so that it disables the card before going to sleep? I suppose I'm asking if there's a way that someone who's only semi-technical could write a macro and apply it to the button - or is this just cloud cuckoo land?
I was look for an auto log on like I used with XP called Power Toys for XP. found an auto log on However when I run it I get the error? Could Not Write DefaultUser name? .I was using my ID and password, I am the only user and a administrator. Does this auto log on work only with the Administrator ID? Or is there another reason it will not install?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a brand new Dell Inspiron 545s which is equipped with a DVD +/- RW drive. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit. Today, I attempted to do my first back-up. I am using a brand new pack of Memorex DVD-RW disks which have never been used before.
Upon clicking on the backup utility, it instructed me to insert a blank DVD into the drive, which I did. The next instructions to appear indicated that the disk needed to be formatted (why?? since this was a brand-new disk??), but I let it go through the disk formatting process anyway. Upon reaching the end of the formatting process, I then received a message that the backup was proceeding.
The backup continued until it was approx. one-third completed (according to the shaded progress bar) and a total of two of my DVD's had been used up to that point. When prompted, I inserted a third disk and was, again, instructed to format it. However, this time I received a message that "Windows was unable to complete the formatting process because the disk was write protected". Having no idea why this would have occurred,I attempted to use another disk, but got the same message, and I finally exited the backup process without being able to complete it.
A few months ago i bought a new HP Pavilion Elite m9530.be desktop computer running Vista Home Premium x64. Almost since the beginning i haven't been able to write to my external hdd wich i used to use on my XP Pro x32 Laptop. On my laptop, I have no problem at all writing and reading to the HDD. It's weird, because sometimes I can write to the HDD on vista x64 and sometimes it says "this disk is write protected..." Please keep in mind i don't want and i can't format the disk because there's to many important files on it and I don't have the space to backup them. Is there a solution without re-formatting the disk. ps. When i bought it, it was formatted as FAT32, on my xp laptop, I changed it to NTFS.

Up until about 3 days ago, I have been able to use my external USB backup drive, transfer music to my phone’s memory card, and use my thumb drives. Now every time I try to transfer something new to one of them, I get this. “The disk is write-protected. Remove the write-protection or use another disk” I booted into Win7, and I was able to transfer files with no problems at all. As soon as I go back into Vista, can’t transfer or delete anything.

I can go away for a coffee and come back BAM a key disk is write protected. View 4 Replies View RelatedI can’t format and write to blank DVD+R’s with the Live File System using my VAIO internal DVD drive, Vista keeps saying the DVDs are write protected. The same problem is apparently keeping me from using Vista backup utility which also says the blank DVDs are write protected. I can still read old backup DVDs on the same DVD drive, but I can’t read the latest backup DVD I made. I can still format, write and read the blank DVD+R’s with the Mastered disc format but as far as I can tell the Vista backup utility needs the Live File System to operate. I tested the DVD drive with Sony's DriveCheck utility and it checked out good. Microsoft's Fix It utility indicated that there was a read and write probem but didn't elaborate about whether it was the drive or a configuration issue. Any ideas out there on why the Vista Live File System thinks the DVDs are write protected? Are there any inexpensive and automated backup programs that work with the Mastered disc format? It seems vaguely like I resolved this same problem a year or so ago but I can't seem to find the answer now. It also seem like the problem was a registry entry but I tried adding.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to run QuickTime I get an Error -2095 alert. When I click Run As Administrator it opens OK.I am the owner and sole user of the computer. How do a give full permissions to myself?I tried going to the program file, opening properties and then the Permissions tab. There are 3 entries in the top window:
SYSTEM
Administrator (EUSTACE PCAdminstrators)
Users (EUSTACE PCUsers)
When I click the last, in the lower window I see checked only Read & Execute and Read, not Full control and the others.
I clicked Edit, and added checkmarks to everything (except Special Permissions that I can't).
I click OK and return to the former dialog, but the permissions for Users have not changed.
When I click Advanced I see 4 lines. Lines 2 and 3 are System and Administrator. Lines 1 and 4 are:
Allow Users (EUSTACE PCUsers) Full Control
Allow Users (EUSTACE PCUsers) Read & Execute C:Program Files
Is the second line necessary?
If I highlight it and click Edit and then highlight it again and click Edit, check Full control, OK, the dialog closes and in the first dialog the line 1 is highlighted and line 4 is the same.
it seems that I have managed to lock myself into a corner here and I am hoping some of you gents can pull me out w/o loosing any body limbs. I have a very special folder, within that folder I have a few files and, until recently, they were working. I decided to try a script to hide the folder so nobody could get to it. After a new build, the script did not work anymore so I decide not to bother with it anymore. the problem is that now that I want to move the folder to my external passport drive, I am getting the following 2 permission pop ups and I can't, for the life of me, make this happen.
I have tried turning the UAC off, tried elevating myself to the highest, I have taken ownership of the folder and the Drive where the folder resides, I have also given me full access of the folder and the files and still, I am getting the dreaded errors. Before attempting to open my case and take the drive out to be used as an external usb/sata drive on my XP laptop in hopes that this will allow me to get it (I am thinking it won't).
Vista now will not install new programs. I get a warning box saying the temp folder is on a drive that is full or that I do not have write permission for. The temp file is where? It is on the C drive, which is nearly empty, and I am logged on as the administrator. What a pile of c***.
