I have four (4) hard disks C: D: E: F: all are connected with sata cable and power cable.(of course) The F: is outside from the pc and connected via external SATA and power cable (like usb NOT usb) I know, with USB external hard disk i can use the safely remove option.
Is there any option to safely remove SATA hard disk without Shut Down the pc?
1) Start-Control Panel-Device Manager-Disk Drives-Right Click on hard disk-Properties-Policies-UntikDisable the Enable write cashing on the disk??
2) Start-Control Panel-Device Manager-Disk Drives-Right Click on hard disk-Disable??

Running Vista64 Home Premium SP1. About every 4 or 5 times I boot the system, my data HDD D: presents as "write protected". A reboot corrects this. I have run diagnostics on the HDD and all appears OK.

I have a Vista64 Ultimate machine with 4 phsical hard drives. Seemingly ar random, the OS slaps write protection on an entire disk. I can go away for a coffee and come back BAM a key disk is write protected. I am logged onas administrator, the attributes fot the disk show that it is not write protected, but every time I try to write to it I get a "write prtotected" dialoge box. If I r reboot perhaps 3 times it clears and I am OK for a couple of days. Any cures without multiple re-boots?

Windows Explorer in XP was a clumsy way to write data files to CD/DVDs. Is W.E. in Vista any better regarding this? If not, can you recommend free programs for writing data to DVDs?

This seems to be a new development, and I'm stumped. I've got three internal hard drives- one housing Vista Ultimate x64, one housing Ubuntu 8.04 x64, and one being used for storage for both OS's. Up until recently they've cooperated nicely. Now, the storage drive (drive E:) will not let me write to it. I cannot rename, delete, cut, or write any new files to any part of that drive. That's troublesome, since that's where I send all of my downloads to!
Even earlier in this session of windows it was working nicely, I was able to download a torrent of the recent Ubuntu 8.04 release (legal and distributed from ubuntu.com). I started a session of Assassin's Creed (a game), and now that I've quit that, I cannot write to the drive. Specifically, the error is: "The disk is write protected. Remove the write protection or use another disk.".........

On Windows Mail (I am running 32-bit Vista) every few hours when I go to open a new folder a message appears where the message thread is usually shown which says that the message can't be shown because of low disk space and system memory. It does not appear to be because of a stuck email, as there are no emails in the Outbox and everything sends OK. Also, it happens when I click on random folders, from being in an existing folder.
For example, I may be in my inbox and want to check sent messages, so I'll click on the sent folder and then all messages will be hidden in all folders, and I'll just see the message about low disk space etc. If I exit Windows Mail then open it back up, the problem remains, though if I restart the computer it goes back to normal, for a few hours

I have encountered a very strange problem. I have downloaded two exe files recently. When I doubleclick on the exe file, instead of the application installing, what should happen but Word of all things opens with, in the case of one of them a box headed 'File Conversion - arw5setup.msi', and a similar wording in the second, asking me to select the encoding that makes my document readable. Whatever I select, the exe file then opens as a text file.
(The reference to an msi file is baffling as both files were exe files.) When it happened the first time I thought it was a corrupt file, but when it happened again it has to be that there is something wrong with my system. Is this a virus? Spybot has just come up with a clean slate ...

1. I have Vista Home Premium and Internet Explorer v 8. I never set anything about users or administrators since I am the only one using this computer.
2. I have many old graphics tutorials in HTM format which I downloaded some years ago when I was using Windows 98. They opened in Windows 98.
3. I can't open them with Vista. If I use FILE > OPEN in Internet Explorer, I get the HTML code. If I double click on the file in Windows Explorer, I get a message saying that Windows Internet Explorer is not responding.
4. I have a similar problem with HTM files which I have recently downloaded from the internet news groups. Are there some settings or updates to correct this problem.

I have a friend running Vista who says he cannot open .TIF files. I am not sure if he is running the Business edition, but could someone tell me what utility that ships with Vista could be used to view the files? I know in XP you could even use Paint, but I don't know what utilities come with Vista. If there is such a utility, is it in both the Vista Home and Business editions? This situation has been discovered recently, and I don't know if it has ever worked, just in case SP1 might be involved. I don't even know if he has that update.

I cannot open any programs or .exe files on my computer without a box appearing stating that WINDOWS CANNOT OPEN THIS FILE. To open this file windows needs to know what programs you want to use to open it etc etc It then gives me 2 options either to USE the web service to find what will open it
or
select a program from a list of installed programs. This puzzles me because the programs im trying to open like SKYPE are in themselves the programs that open by themselves. What can i do to fix this?

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium Edition and IE7. For the past year I have never had any problem saving a web page thru IE& for off line reading,. The file was always saved as a 93Web Archive, Single file (*.mht).94 I must have done something wrong in playing around with my computer because I now cannot open any mht files that I save. This has been happening for the past week. When I click on the file to open it a dialog box pops up stating 93This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Association control panel. I tried this but I guess I 92m too slow in my thinking cause I still cant get it to work. I 92ve read the help files to know avail. I have got Auslogics Defrag program and after each defrag I do it tells me I have a number of junk files, at present 971 sometimes its way over 1000 and I then do a disk cleanup hoping to get rid of them, but after installing another game or program of some sort, again I am told I have several junk files. I would like to know how I can get rid as it also tells me that they can slow the PC down and lessen performance, not that my PC is a slouch, far from it, but I still don't like the idea of junk files on my PC and would like for once to sort this out, as before I have never taken any notice of it, perhaps I should have, but thats me, untidy as always!

Is there a time range that Disk Cleanup protects the temp files it should remove? After running Disk Cleanup there are still temp files left in C:/windows/temp and in the appdata/local/temp in my users folder. However the files left are recent files, so does Disk Cleanup only remove files which older than a few days old?
