Is there a way or shortcut that I can use to find which programs or windows are still using the Drive? Will potential problems result if I just do a 'hard' close-down?, ie >Start>Switch Off button ='Closes all open Programs, Shuts down Windows, turns off Computer'. Will the same apply if I do a >Start>Restart, close-down and restart procedure? I have attempted to Safely Remove Drive M: via the Icon in the Notification Tray, and through Device Manager, but the results as shown above are the same. My desktop with WinXP installed seriously crashed. I had backed up all on a Seagate Free Agent storage device. I started using my laptop, with Vista Home Premium installed, for all my computer projects. I had backed these up but when I added the storage device to the laptop it told me I would have to format the drive before I could use it with the laptop. Of course, then all my backups would be lost. How can I get around this in order to install and/or reach my backups from the storage device to the laptop. I thought I'd be able to carry these backups from computer to computer but I find that is not the case.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI occasionally (every 3 months) back up my hard drives (I am using three computers, all similarly configured) to an external storage device. I tend to back up the My Documents folders somewhat more frequently (monthly). My two desktops are Vista 64s, and the laptop is a Vista 32-bit. I use the laptop as the master, so to speak, and will occasionally update the My Documents folders of the desktops from this machine.
I sometimes overwrite the same file on the desktops with an older file from the laptop. What I would really like is an easy to use piece of software that updates a file only if it is newer (later time stamp) than what is being updated. This would run much more quickly, and also prevent me from overwriting newer files.
I have a USB mass storage device, and it takes vista around 30 minutes to recognize the two partitions (one is a 64 MB FAT32 partition and the other is a 111 GB FAT32 partition). On my old slow computer, XP will recognize the drive partitions within seconds. Is there some setting I need to change in vista to get this to work correctly? This is a drive for a digital music player, and I've tried different drives, so I know the drive itself isn't the problem.

View 4 Replies View RelatedIn the corporate world, a lot of time is spent on locking down computers to minimize the risk of confidential information leaving the company.  With the popularity of USB storage devices in recent years the problem for large corporations has exploded. Almost all users want to use USB storage devices to move data around. With the size of USB storage devices increasing so much in recent years, the risk is increasing as more and more data could possibly be stolen or lost accidentally. In companies, USB storage devices have been banned completely and disabled from use on company computers.
In Windows Vista there is an alternative that will allow your corporate users to be able to read from USB storage devices but not write any data to them. Effectively turning on USB storage devices for all users but making them read-only. This way users can still read information off of USB storage devices that a third-party vendor may provide data on while preventing the employee from writing any data back to the storage device.
To setup read only USB storage device operation, follow these steps below:
Click on the Start Button and type in Regedit and hit Enter.
Navigate through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControl.
Right click on Control and select New and then Key. Call the new key StorageDevicePolicies.
Right click on StorageDevicePolicies and select New and then Dword. Call the new dword WriteProtect...

When the Local Security Policy editor has loaded, expand Local Policies and select Security Options.
Scroll through the list and locate "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level." Right click on this setting and select Properties....
Can not get my HP 7400 scanner to work after upgrading to Vista Ultimate 32 bit. Not the hardware - works fine under XP pro using same hardware configuration. Did a clean install, installed motherboard BIOS updates, scanner BIOS updates, Vista updates and the correct driver from HP. The scanner installed and Device Manager says device is working properly. When I try to scan, scanner initializes, starts to scan then locks up. Then can no longer be seen. ASUS M2N-E motherboard with AMD dual core. Other than that Vista works OK with the rest of my system
View 9 Replies View Relatedi have installed the correct driver for this belkin bluetooth usb dongle model: F8T012XX1 but in device manager, it has the belkin device and microsoft bluetooth enumerator, which is great. but when u get further down the list. it has a tab named "other devices" and then a subtab with "bluetooth peripheral device" which has an exclemation mark on it. i have searched for driver software using the update service but it cant find no update. i have looked for the name of the manufacturer but found nothing.i then disabled the unknown device, and sent a picture to my mobile phone. which confirmed that it was not the belkin bluetooth device. so i uninstalled the unknown device, restarted the computer. then when i logged in, it said that it had found a new device and wanted me to find the CD that came with it.

I do not know much about it as it is not mine, but the problem is the audio was cutting out and now there is nothing. The computer is not recognizing any type of audio device installed. Even in Device Manager, there is no option for Sound, game and controllers. I have tried downloading the driver and installing, but no luck there.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running Home Premium 64 on a Sony Vaio Laptop (CS170F). I'm having a curious problem: Yesterday I plugged into the machine the dongle of my wireless logitech mouse, and for some reason the machine said "Your unknown device is ready to use" (my OS is in spanish, the messages may not be accurately translated). Since then, an annoying message pops every few seconds warning about an "unrecognized USB device", that "didn't work as expected". The best part is this, if I click on the tray icon, sometimes the informative dialog window is emply, an other times shows all the USB ports in the system plus one extra with a "unknown UBS device", even without any device plugged into the system. I've tryed removing the unknown device from the device manager, but it shows up again.
I had been running Vista Ultimate x64 for a few months and recently found that I can only use the original USB mouse?! Installation of any USB mouse would show a new "USB Human Interface Device" in Device Manager but it just won't work. Installation of the very same model of my original mouse didn't work neither. So basically I am stick with the current mouse?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI went to turn it on this morning, I just had a black screen showing the following words;
Press F2 to run
Press F11 to boot menu
Auto detecting PRI Master Atapai CDROM.
It then went to reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I went into the BIOS to change the boot order and inserted my Vista home premium 32bit. I then got windows is loading in files. After a short while I got the black start up screen with Microsoft Corporation but after a few seconds it just froze. Moments later it went to a blue screen with white writing part of which said the following; A PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETECTED AND WINDOWS HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN TO PREVENT DAMAGE TI YOUR COMPUTER.
1 month from purchase my C drive was full all 68GB ??? no music, no videos. I use disk clean-up and a miserly 3mb are cleared. I search the drive for every file >1kb giving the total of all files hidden and not as 16GB. I try the computer tools/storage to ascertain why it???s full, disk rescan. I try number of things but nothing. The next day I reboot the laptop and as if by magic I have 52GB space capacity. 1 month I am at the time point 1GB spare capacity, I use TreeSize that tells me I have files totally 17GB. Why is Vista telling me I have no space left?

View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is really mysterious. I have an external 2.5" USB drive and for god's sake I cannot safely remove it from my Vista ultimate 64bit system! I copied something on it and I am quite sure, that safely remove is good to do, because I use such drives for some time already and I already lost some files when it was not done (my computer froze something)! Process explorer shows nothing when I search for my drive letter. I tried some unlocker utility, but it does not make it's context menu.maybe after restart it will :- I disabled indexing for fast search on this drive, but nothing changed.Maybe system restore?.
If I copy files to a thumb drive using Vista Home Premium what file storage system is used.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI rarely want to save an email. When I do, I drag it into the "drafts" folder. Meanwhile, Vista is saving every email I have received since I bought this computer and went online. Why? I don't want them. I delete them after reading every day, even using the "shift-delete" permanent(?) method. Yet all the emails are stored in some "indexed location", taking up space. how to stop this constant storage by Vista? I have tried to delete the old emails but they never go away.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a "storage" drive (seagate sata 3.0gb, 320gb) with lots of files which was previously used (as a storage drive) with my xp pro 32 install, and after that, with my linux system via fuse+ntfs-3g. This drive is mountable in linux still, and all files appear to be intact. I would like to share this storage drive between my dual boot Vista
Ultimate/Debian Etch (both 64) system, but if it is connected while trying to boot vista, vista will stop after the "loading" screen, and rest eternally on a black screen, before any welcome logo or logon screen.Without this drive connected, vista boots fine. Without my linux drive connected, and with the storage drive connected, vista still will not boot. Vista even sees my linux drive and all its partitions, but will not boot
with the storage drive attached. I've tried booting and *then* connecting the drive, but it doesn't show up anywhere at all (my computer, device manager, disk management).I've searched EVERYWHERE for the last several months (ever since i bought vista near the end of september '07) and have found absolutely Zero clues as to why this is happening or how to fix it.
I'm trying to use a 4G USB storage for transferring files from an XP platform to a Vista platform. I'm finding something very funny. I copy the files to the storage (and I can see and open them on the XP machine). Than I put the USB storage on the Vista machine. I can see again the files but I cannot open them (the files seem to be corrupted). Finally I put the USB storage on the XP and I see that the files are corrupted. It looks like Vista has corrupted my files. I'm using the same USB storage for transferring files between XP machines without any problem.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThis has been driving me crazy. After spending about 4 hours trying to get it to work, Vista refuses to back up my computer. I keep getting this box:
I have done all I know how to do, including creating a partition bigger than the one my OS is housed on (500gbs) and it is still not big enough apparently. The Seven backup worked amazingly, but Vista seems to not like it.
1. Last month, I was able to install Vista SP2, but now after redoing my system, I cannot update to SP2 anymore. I get the error: “Not enough storage to process this command.”
2. Gateway will not give me support since I am updating to SP2 (SP1 is the OEM when I bought the computer).
3. Microsoft will not support me either since I bought an OEM-OS system, unless I pay the $59 for the service.
I have Vista Ultimate 64-bit computer as a server for home network. The clients are mixed Vista (Ultimate) 64-bit and XP (Professional) 32-bit computers. After installing Vista SP1 the Vista server reliability has gone bad for XP clients. When I use one of the Vista server disk shares from XP client heavily, the connection does down and I get "Not enough server storage is available to process this command" and/or "System error 58" in the client side. Vista server event viewer shows these error messages soon after the problems:- The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the pool was empty (system log / source srv / event ID 219)
The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the server reached the configured limit for nonpaged pool allocations (system log / source srv / event ID 2017) The server was unable to allocate a work item 43419 times in the last 60 seconds (system log / source srv / event ID 2021)this is a warning only The funny thing is that I can continue to use the same disk share from Vista client, but to be able to use the server again from the XP client I need to reboot the Vista server (no actions needed in the XP client side)....
