Safely Remove USB Thumb Drive :: Light Stays On Drive
Sep 28, 2009Before I remove a USB thumb drive, I click the green check from notification area; I click the message that appears next to the green check, Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device - drives (F:, G; then a dialog box appears that states, This device can now be safely removed from computer.
The light on the thumb drive, however, stays lighted. I previously followed a procedure where the light would go off on the thumb drive when I did a Safely Remove.
Should the light on the thumb drive go off before it can be safely removed? If so, how do I get the thumdrive light to go off?
Using A Thumb Drive As A Floppy
Dec 27, 2007Can you use a thumb drive as a bootable floppy? For such things as updating the BIOS? I don't have a physical floppy drive and it appears that without it you can't update the bios. Never had a thumb drive before and their really cheap now. Just wanted to know how do you go about making it bootable and such if this is doable!

May 1, 2009I have a San Disk 4GB Cruzer Micro thumb drive with U3 on it. I had orginally gotten the drive when I had a HP that was running Windows XP. It worked fine on that computer. Well the XP machine took a crap and was replaced with a Compaq that is running Vista Home. The drive was NOT inserted with the HP crashed. Now when I insert the Thumb drive into a usb port it lights up and shows in "my computer" as an Audio CD with a drive letter of "H". The Launchpad does not start and the password screen does not come up either. The directory of the drive only shows 1 file (which does not open) and there was aprox 1000 files on it before. San Disk has been no help and I have not been able to find anything on the internet that has helped. Oh did I mention that I have very little computer knowledge, .
I normally would not be to ticked about this but all the files on the drive are family photos, photo's of hunting trips etc. I know my fault for not saving them to a CD and relying on a thumb drive but I thought they were more reliable than this. Here is a little twist, I have another Sandisk thumb drive that was used with the XP machine but this one works on the vista machine! I havent been able to try the drive that I am having trouble with on another XP machine as I dont have access to one (work switched all computers to vista). I dont know if it is a formatting issue or what but I can not figure it out.
USB Thumb Drives & Required Drive
Jun 8, 2008I have noticed that even after being told it is "safe to remove hardware" the light on the thumb drive doesn't go off and the next time I put it into the USB drive of my Vista machine, it always says that the drive needs to be scanned and fixed. If it was just one thumb drive, I would think it was the drive, but I get this with all of them, I have three Dane Elec drives, two Sony, a Memorex and a SanDisk Cruzer. Is this a bug that hasn't been worked out yet, or is there something I am missing?

Mar 29, 2008This is really mysterious. I have an external 2.5" USB drive and for god's sake I cannot safely remove it from my Vista ultimate 64bit system! I copied something on it and I am quite sure, that safely remove is good to do, because I use such drives for some time already and I already lost some files when it was not done (my computer froze something)! Process explorer shows nothing when I search for my drive letter. I tried some unlocker utility, but it does not make it's context menu.maybe after restart it will :- I disabled indexing for fast search on this drive, but nothing changed.Maybe system restore?.
64 No Boot If Storage Drive Attached
Mar 23, 2008I have a "storage" drive (seagate sata 3.0gb, 320gb) with lots of files which was previously used (as a storage drive) with my xp pro 32 install, and after that, with my linux system via fuse+ntfs-3g. This drive is mountable in linux still, and all files appear to be intact. I would like to share this storage drive between my dual boot Vista
Ultimate/Debian Etch (both 64) system, but if it is connected while trying to boot vista, vista will stop after the "loading" screen, and rest eternally on a black screen, before any welcome logo or logon screen.Without this drive connected, vista boots fine. Without my linux drive connected, and with the storage drive connected, vista still will not boot. Vista even sees my linux drive and all its partitions, but will not boot
with the storage drive attached. I've tried booting and *then* connecting the drive, but it doesn't show up anywhere at all (my computer, device manager, disk management).I've searched EVERYWHERE for the last several months (ever since i bought vista near the end of september '07) and have found absolutely Zero clues as to why this is happening or how to fix it.
USB Storage Drive Registers But Not Accible?
Aug 28, 2009When I pop a USB storag drive (250mb) into any USB slot (either an original one on the PC or off a hub) it pops up on my computer as Removable Drive (J), but when I click on Drive J I get ' Please insert a disk into Removable Disk (J) - it won't allow me to format it wither. Anything I can do to get it going or is it a gonner?

System restore could not create restore points.
Error message : Insufficient storage space 0x8004231f.
I had more than 60GB free....
The volume path in vssadmin was missing a drive letter.
After many hours of searching for a solution and trying vssadmin, registry fixes etc., it only got worse...
Error message : catastrophic failure 0x8000ffff ...
System Recovery Left Almost No Storage Space!
Apr 7, 2008I previously had a problem on my Gateway Laptop Computer - Gateway Core2 Duo Centrino, that came pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Premium, which I could not fix. I had to do a System Recovery using the on-screen program and did not back up any of my files, in attempt to clear out everything that I had on the computer. After I completed this process, I set up my desktop and internet, and started over. When reviewing my Hard Disk Drives on my "Computer" menu, I notice that my C: Drive is almost all the way full (8.55 GB free of 139 GB).
Although I downloaded a few programs and set up my Internet Security, I am sure I did not install anything large enough to use up almost all of the computers storage space for programs and files. By doing the System Recovery I thought that it would erase everything so that my computer would be back to it's factory condition. Could my previous files still be in the computer? After searching this forum, I did not find any information on the specific question that convinsed me of the soultion,
or a course of action.
I created a restore point and went into the System Tools menu and attempted the disk cleanup on the recovery drive C: where Windows Vista is stored and then cleaned up the up the Shadow Copies, and nothing helped. I went through many windows folders and found nothing that would amount to the vast amount of space that is apparently taken up.
Cloning A Drive: Tranfer Entire Drive Incuding All Files And The Operating System From Current IDE HDD To A New SATA Drive
May 2, 2008I am Using Vista Ultimate 64. I would like to tranfer my entire drive incuding all files and the Operating system From my current IDE HDD to a new SATA Drive of the sames size (500 Gig) I need the IDE Drive for an older computer ( The 40 Gig IBM Deathstar still functions great, but all programs seem more bloated these Days)
Anyway I went to Administrative Tools and Formated the New Drive NFTS with no Drive Letter. But I cannot get it recognized as a transfer device when I go to system backup. Can I use 'C' on the second and soon to be only drive? If I have to use E or F for now can I change it back later. would that affect the file system? I intend to Low level Format the IDE and try cloning the old machine's XP Drive (32 bit) to it in the second place.
"hard Disk Drive" To "devices With Removable Storage"
Feb 3, 2009I installed an update today (USB composite device dc3d) and it changed my DVD RW drive from "hard disk drive" to "devices with removable storage" I think DVD RW drives are supposed to be classified as "devices with removable storage" I was wondering if this #1 Matters #2 is correct #3 will cause any problems. Any thoughts? What does your "my computer" view show your DVD RW drive type as.

May 25, 2009there's about 3 backups on that partition on my C: drive it has 9GB free this varies some days sometimes it goes up and down though I don't understand why my system restore was put from 15GB to 5GB and this is fine for me I defragment and disk clean alot I have 15GB of music and pictures when I first got the laptop there was about 9GB already filled so where has the rest of the space gone? all my friends laptops have 120GB and they have about 100GB left what's happend to mine and how can I get it back?

Oct 14, 2009First off, after restarting my computer one day, I found it to either not get past the loading screen or freeze 5 minutes after if i could log on. I tried a few things that did not work and went to do a system restore from the windows repair tools upon booting up. When i tried to restore i get the message that a system restore cannot be done because the C drive had errors. It prompted me to do a disk consistency check upon restart which i did. After trying a few times i find that it always freezes at 7% through, and will not move. Finally, i tried booting into safe mode, only to find that it too freezes when it is loading files, always at windows/system32/drivers/crcdisk.sys. The computer is only 2 months old, bought brand new at best buy. A rocketfish 550watt power supply and Geforce 9800 video card were installed by the employees, but no other hardware was replaced or tampered with.

I search the drive for every file >1kb giving the total of all files hidden and not as 16GB. I try the computer tools/storage to ascertain why it???s full, disk rescan. I try number of things but nothing. The next day I reboot the laptop and as if by magic I have 52GB space capacity. 1 month I am at the time point 1GB spare capacity, I use TreeSize that tells me I have files totally 17GB. Mar 31, 2008i just install vista x64 on RAID 0 (2 X 250 Gb) volume. Volume space is 465 GB (instead of 500 GB! that?s alright), free space 451 GB, so it took 14GB on OS and Page File. Now i want to partition it and want to allocate about 100GB for system drive i think which is more then enough.::
::But the problem is, on Disk Management when i select the volume and click shrink Volume i get followings::

::so i can't shrink the volume less then 241337. that means it forcing me to keep the system drive about 235.68 GB! which is about the size of one of the hard drive (232.8 GB). So... what is going on? why its forcing me to keep the volume that large??::
Delete The C Drive From A Dual Boot System?
Jul 9, 2009I have a dual-boot setup. Volume C runs Vista Home Premium. Volume F runs Vista Ultimate. (Vol. D is a recovery volume.) I would like to blow away C: and boot only from F. Would the following be a possible/advisable solution?
1. Boot from F.
2. Delete C.
3. Rename F "C".
4. Expand F (the new "C") to include the old C.
External Drive Trying To Boot:freezes The System
Apr 2, 2010I'm using HD from my old computer (XP) as an external drive on my Vista laptop. The HD has XP on it. When I power up it looks like the HD is trying to boot XP on top of my Vista and freezes the system. How can I avoid this attempted boot? Where should I place the jumper on the HD.

Apr 9, 2008I have a Vista Home Premium system that will not start. It gets as far as the system bootup progress bar, tries to start then suddenly the system shuts down. I have tried every possible recovery/repair technique I could find and still no luck. The system is using a Intel motherboard with Matrix Storage RAID which I have configured as RAID 1. In the repair console (from Vista DVD) I can read the drive from a prompt window so I assume the data is safe. I would like to back up the user data (photos, docs, email) and do a reinstall without the RAID 1 configuration. I have heard there are problems with Vista and the Matrix Storage controller.
Question is: How would I go about backing up a non-bootable Vista drive? I have another system running XP pro that I could mount the Vista drive to and copy the data to a portable USB drive. Is this a possibility? Will I run into any "access denied" issues when saving the data off to a backup drive? Also, the system was using Outlook 03 for email. What is the best way to recover the Outlook email data (messages, addresses, etc.) from a non-bootable disk? Is this email data in the same location as it is with XP?
