I'm using HD from my old computer (XP) as an external drive on my Vista laptop. The HD has XP on it. When I power up it looks like the HD is trying to boot XP on top of my Vista and freezes the system. How can I avoid this attempted boot? Where should I place the jumper on the HD.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI was reading the speed up boot time performance tutorial (by a now banned member, no less) and saw that it had an option to improve disk speed by enabling advanced performance for the disk. Is it wise to do this on an installed hard drive? I noticed the optimize disk option was already enabled on my C drive and was wondering if it would be a good idea to enable the advance performance option as well.I just don't want to lose information if I am forced to, say, hard boot the system when if it freezes up.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI read in the news, this past January, that MSFT was not going to support XP after June 30, 2008. I don't remember the extent of support downside. My concern was that I wanted to be ready and updated. I like having the latest gadgets, especially if helps organize my life. I had the machine to upgrade on, too. I have a HP Media Center PC, Pentium D (dual), and a decent and adequate graphics card. I souped it up to 3.5GB RAM and added a PCI slot for SATA connection. I added the SATA connection because I had just purchased a 750GB external hard drive. I got it for storage and back up. At the time I did not know I could do a dual boot install. I found that out on HP's site.
So I thought that would be the best choice for me, in case Vista did not work out. That made me feel a lot better about the transition. As I started to do the dual set up, I saw my new external drive there with all that room and thought, why not see what happens?????! It???s been a little rocky, I have to say. I like Vista now that the serious stuff is behind me. Microsoft was very helpful. I still lose my connection when I connect through my router.My never ending anxiety is this. Did I do the right thing? Is my external drive sturdy enough to handle the rigors of the Operating System drive? The tech guys said it could not be done. I went ahead and tried and it DID work. I worry that the drive is going to crash. Does anyone have any thoughts about this? The external drive is Western Digital MY Book Home Edition, 750GB, USB, FireWire and SATA connections. The RAID PCI slot I installed is 1.50mbs. I had no PCI express available that would have given it 3mbs. (I think I have the standards right, if not, I bet most who know understand.)The graphics was installed there....

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have XP Home on my desktop and it has an external Western Digital USB attached drive that I have set up as shared on the network. I also have allowed updates from netowrk users in the share settings. I can see the drive from my Vista Home Premium laptop, but when I try to access it I get an error: "drivename" is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network resource. Not enough server storage is available to process this command.
Now I shared the internal C drive on the desktop with the same share settings and I can access that drive from Vista with no problem. The only things I can't access on the C drive are documents and settings, WINNT and other systems folders, whcih is, I assume, as it should be. Otherwise I can access all the folders and files on the C drive. I have Norton Internet Security on the desktop and Norton 360 on the laptop, but my home network is in the trusted group for both firewalls and, since I can see the drive and can also access the C drive, it doesn't appear to be a firewall problem, but some kind of permissions problem, and of course I can't set permissions on the XP Home system. Can someone explain to me what is wrong? I have been searching for days on the web for answers, but as yet have not found a pertinent answer.
I have a WD MyBook 1TB external hard drive. It's a replacement for a LaCie drive that I broke accidentally. Because I broke my LaCie, which held all my backups, I need to do a full system backup so I have one on file. (I'm running Windows Vista Business SP1 on a Compaq Presario laptop. I've tried this both before and after SP1 and have got the same result.)
The weekly file-only backups I have scheduled with Windows Backup work fine. It's only the full system backup that gives me problems. Everything goes as planned: I select the MyBook as the destination, and Windows starts the backup. Once it gets near the end (I'd say about 90% done according to the status bar), I get the blue crash screen. Here's what it says: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Stop: 0X000000D1 (0X00000004, 0X00000002, 0X00000001, 0C807503FF)nvstor.sys - Address 807503FF base at 8074C000, DateStamp 458d543d It doesn't restart after that, it just sticks on the blue screen. I have to shut the computer off and then turn it back on to do anything.Can anyone clue me in on what might be going on? I thought maybe my driver was out of date, but Windows Update can't find a newer one, neither can it when I go into the device's properties. Unless I'm missing something there, or it's something other than a driver issue.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a dual-boot setup. Volume C runs Vista Home Premium. Volume F runs Vista Ultimate. (Vol. D is a recovery volume.) I would like to blow away C: and boot only from F. Would the following be a possible/advisable solution?
1. Boot from F.
2. Delete C.
3. Rename F "C".
4. Expand F (the new "C") to include the old C.
I have a Vista Home Premium system that will not start. It gets as far as the system bootup progress bar, tries to start then suddenly the system shuts down. I have tried every possible recovery/repair technique I could find and still no luck. The system is using a Intel motherboard with Matrix Storage RAID which I have configured as RAID 1. In the repair console (from Vista DVD) I can read the drive from a prompt window so I assume the data is safe. I would like to back up the user data (photos, docs, email) and do a reinstall without the RAID 1 configuration. I have heard there are problems with Vista and the Matrix Storage controller.
Question is: How would I go about backing up a non-bootable Vista drive? I have another system running XP pro that I could mount the Vista drive to and copy the data to a portable USB drive. Is this a possibility? Will I run into any "access denied" issues when saving the data off to a backup drive? Also, the system was using Outlook 03 for email. What is the best way to recover the Outlook email data (messages, addresses, etc.) from a non-bootable disk? Is this email data in the same location as it is with XP?
I am runnig out of space in the C drive, but have plenty of space in D drive. How do I allocate more space from the D drive to the C drive? As you can see I have no memory in C:. What can I do to increase it? Do not want to purchase additional programs, not enough space to install them.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI was starting my computer today (that has Vista), and during the start up process, a black screen came up stating that there was an error opening up my external hard drive and it was checking for errors. After it finally booted up, I went to open the hard drive files, and it was totally BLANK! I then restarted the computer, and still the hard drive is EMPTY! I had ALL my important files in there!
The ONLY thing that looks promising is that when I go to Start then to Computer, it shows the hard drive there, and it still shows that 43GB are free of 111GB of storage (same info shows by right clicking on it and going to Properties). Why would it show this if nothing is on the hard drive anymore? Is there ANYWAY to recover these files again you think???? I NEED those files!!!! Remember that the hard drive STILL PHYSICALLY WORKS. It's just that I cannot access the files on my pc at the time for some reason.......
I just bought and installed a external hard drive. I am fairly knowlegable about computers but this is my first Ex. Hard drive and know very little about there use. So what I want to know is how to save my Family Tree Makers files to it. And once I do that how do I know for sure it is opening from my new drive and not my computer C: drive? I saved it to a DVD one time but when the time came when I needed it all that was there was a short cut but no files.

It said the backup was successful but when I went to safely remove hardware, I got this message: " Windows can't stop your Generic volume device because it is in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again later. "I made sure everything was closed, checked with Task Manager and tried again. Same message. After 20 minutes, I finally just disconnected it.

I don't really trust the Seagate any more and want to use the 1tb drive as a backup. I had backed up everything 6 months ago but it's amazing how much stuff you accumulate in 6 months time.
I am not too knowledgable in hardrives. Not enough to do anything complicated. Right now i am running Vista Ultimate 64 on the Seagate. Could i put another copy of Vista on the 1tb drive and just copy what i want over to it? That way if the Seagate dies again i can go right to the other drive. This will not be an external drive, just another bare drive in the bay. I realize i'm not going about it the best or most efficient way. Some people have explained better ways but most of it was over my head. I just want to be able to unplug the bad drive (if it goes bad) and continue with the other drive. So, would i run into any problems with Vista (not dual boot of course)on both my drives? Does it sound like this approach would work?
I am Using Vista Ultimate 64. I would like to tranfer my entire drive incuding all files and the Operating system From my current IDE HDD to a new SATA Drive of the sames size (500 Gig) I need the IDE Drive for an older computer ( The 40 Gig IBM Deathstar still functions great, but all programs seem more bloated these Days)
Anyway I went to Administrative Tools and Formated the New Drive NFTS with no Drive Letter. But I cannot get it recognized as a transfer device when I go to system backup. Can I use 'C' on the second and soon to be only drive? If I have to use E or F for now can I change it back later. would that affect the file system? I intend to Low level Format the IDE and try cloning the old machine's XP Drive (32 bit) to it in the second place.
I have Windows XP and Vista. I always go through "safely remove hardware" before pulling off USB drive on XP. However, I have been trying to do the same on Vista, it seems that I cannot do the same as XP. For instance, I plug in my USB on Vista and it appears as H drive on Vista, when I am ready to do "safely remove hardware", I don't see the device drive H is on the "Safely remove hardware" window, so I cannot stop the H drive. I am concerned about the Vista hardware.

If I try to run another app., e.g. Outlook, it will freeze and the "Not Responding" notation appears at the top of the screen. I've tried to nail down what might be hogging the hard drive (using reliability and performance monitor) but can't identify any single program. I have 50 gigs free space, 2 GB RAM. I defrag once a week and clean up temp files and cashes once a day. It seems all proposed solutions I've run across lead me to one of the registry cleanup programs. I run Reg. Clean & Wise Registry Cleaner once a week. Real time monitoring by McCafee and Windows Defender. I have run both AD Aware and Spy Bot frequently.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop that is about 10 months old. The operating system is Windows Vista Home Premium. It worked well for first 8 months,I think. Then it started to freeze. Sometimes it worked perfectly for few hours and then started freezing and sometimes it started freezing from when I turned it on.The freezes usually last from 10 seconds to more minutes. I usually restart the computer if the freeze lasts more than 3 minutes. So for about one month I didn't really think it was something that could mean a serious problem, and I didn't do anything about it.It stopped after two moths, I think.
Few days ago, it started again.I tried System Restore once, but it wasn't successful.I scanned the system for errors (I do that every month), defragmented my computer (I do that every month too), and used the Memory Diagnostics Tool after a recommendation from a friend, and none of these scans showed a problem. I scan my laptop for viruses and spyware every week and all that is found is a tracking cookie. I also didn't install any new hardware or software.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have Vista Home Premium 32bit running on a Sony notebook. I actually ran system restore last night and have not installed anything since so my system is clean/fresh. I have a Maxtor 500GB external HDD which I connect to my PC via USB2.0.
When I connect the drive, it shows up in Explorer, it shows up in Disc Management, it gives the correct capacity, etc. However, every once in a while (yes this problem is random) when I try to access files/folders on the drive, Explorer will just hang. The busy cursor shows up, and nothing responds. The ONLY way to fix it is to pull the USB cable. Rebooting doesn't work b/c on the "shutting down" screen it just hangs UNLESS I disconnect the drive. Other times, I can go into a folder on the drive but only a few of the many files inside show up. However, sometimes the drive works NO PROBLEM and is very speedy!
I can't run any disc scan utils b/c they hang and the HDD again becomes unresponsive until I disconnect it. And I can never see properties of ALL the folders, nor can I change folder icons. While any of this is going on, the drive NEVER grinds while hanging. It doesn't seem to be searching for anything. It's like it's clogging up something w/ Windows. Also, in Explorer, the green bar is always growing as if searching.
I recently bought a western digital 1TB hard drive which I had to reformat before I could use. Everything works good now, except for onething. Sometimes the computer doesn't want to restart while the new drive is plugged in. If I remove it from the USB port prior to restarting, it will restart just fine.
It shuts down and turns on without an issue. This only happens when I
restart the system with it plugged in.
So while it's not a big issue,it is an annoyance.
I just Bought a 120Gig External HardDrive and i want to put An O/S on it how do i do that? i bought an external HDD because all my PC games take up all my HDD space in my computer :P)

drives volume. Now it is not listed in disk management. I looked everywhere
to get it back and can't figure it out. How do I make Vista recognize this
drive again so I can partition and format it?
