Mar 23, 2008is it unheard of to dual-boot Vista x64 on a dual-core computer with x32 on an external drive (same software package)?

Dual Boot On External Hard Drive
Mar 23, 2008I read in the news, this past January, that MSFT was not going to support XP after June 30, 2008. I don't remember the extent of support downside. My concern was that I wanted to be ready and updated. I like having the latest gadgets, especially if helps organize my life. I had the machine to upgrade on, too. I have a HP Media Center PC, Pentium D (dual), and a decent and adequate graphics card. I souped it up to 3.5GB RAM and added a PCI slot for SATA connection. I added the SATA connection because I had just purchased a 750GB external hard drive. I got it for storage and back up. At the time I did not know I could do a dual boot install. I found that out on HP's site.
So I thought that would be the best choice for me, in case Vista did not work out. That made me feel a lot better about the transition. As I started to do the dual set up, I saw my new external drive there with all that room and thought, why not see what happens?????! It???s been a little rocky, I have to say. I like Vista now that the serious stuff is behind me. Microsoft was very helpful. I still lose my connection when I connect through my router.My never ending anxiety is this. Did I do the right thing? Is my external drive sturdy enough to handle the rigors of the Operating System drive? The tech guys said it could not be done. I went ahead and tried and it DID work. I worry that the drive is going to crash. Does anyone have any thoughts about this? The external drive is Western Digital MY Book Home Edition, 750GB, USB, FireWire and SATA connections. The RAID PCI slot I installed is 1.50mbs. I had no PCI express available that would have given it 3mbs. (I think I have the standards right, if not, I bet most who know understand.)The graphics was installed there....

Mar 8, 2009I've configured my system to dual boot into Vista64 (OEM) and Vista86 (retail) on the same drive - 2 separate partitions in a raid 0 configuration.
Vista64 partition: is used exclusively for music recording with 64 bit software only - yes they do exist, I use Sonar.
Vista 86 partition: is for general computer use: Internet, email and such.
I understand that vista64 runs both 64 and 32 bit applications well enuf, I simply want to keep both uses apart from one another - thus my reason for a dual boot.
... so here's my question :^) Has anyone done this before, on a raid 0 using two instances of Vista? If so, could you tell me how well it's worked for you?
...also, concerning the "pagefile.sys". Since I have both vista's on the same drive in separate partitions and vista doesn't like running two pagefiles on the same drive. Should I move one to a second drive? If so, which should I move the x64 or the x86. Maybe both, eh?

Sep 11, 2008I have a custom tower with Vista Ultimate x64 a 2.4 dual core Intel Proccessor 4gb ran and 5 hhd. I just started having this problem not that long ago. I will turn my computer on and it will start up fine and seem to run just fine, but then after a bit my performance guage on my side bar will read out that one or both of the two cores is at 100% it will stay this way for indefinate amount of time. I uswaly restart and it will work fine then do the same thing. It is not just a glich cause the computer nearly locks up when this happens. I move the mouse and a minute later the cursor will acctualy move. What are some posible causes and solutions to this and does anyone else have these problems?

Strange Behaviour After Upgrading To AMD Quad-Core From Dual-Core
Jan 20, 2010Simply put- RED Blue Screens. I don't know what I need to call them. THEY ARE RED! And they just reference "An error reading the instruction set" There is no STOP Error. I upgraded the Processor from AMD Athlon x2 5000+ to an AMD Phenom x4 9650. I have not overclocked it. In fact, first thing I did after installing it was reset CMOS.
I've checked for minidumps relating to this issue but there are none. I am running Windows 7 x64 Home Premium.
Run From An External HD (dual Boot With XP On An Internal HD)
May 7, 2008I am curious if Vista can be run from one of those portable external hard drives that I see in Staples, etc... rather than have to install another internal hard drive. I want to dual-boot with XP (already installed on an internal HD) and it would also be great if I can bring that external HD with us when we travel and hook it up to my wife's XP laptop and be able to boot up in Vista too. We need something for testing our software in Vista.

Feb 19, 2010i just got my 500gb Seagate drive back after it bricked from the little firmware issue they had. I also just purchased a 1TB WD drive. I don't really trust the Seagate any more and want to use the 1tb drive as a backup. I had backed up everything 6 months ago but it's amazing how much stuff you accumulate in 6 months time.
I am not too knowledgable in hardrives. Not enough to do anything complicated. Right now i am running Vista Ultimate 64 on the Seagate. Could i put another copy of Vista on the 1tb drive and just copy what i want over to it? That way if the Seagate dies again i can go right to the other drive. This will not be an external drive, just another bare drive in the bay. I realize i'm not going about it the best or most efficient way. Some people have explained better ways but most of it was over my head. I just want to be able to unplug the bad drive (if it goes bad) and continue with the other drive. So, would i run into any problems with Vista (not dual boot of course)on both my drives? Does it sound like this approach would work?

I attempted to install Vista on the second drive (300G partitioned to 200 and 100 G with vista on the former). upon rebooting I got a message from windows boot manager saying the File:windowssystem32winload.exe is missing with a status: 0xc000000e.
So, another reboot I get the choice of Earlier version of window or Microsoft windows vista. clicking on the former brings me to the screen with win xp logo and stays there without any futher move. Clicking on the vista it circles back to the same page. Now I can't even get to my XP.

Jun 27, 2008I have had some irritating system lockups with my computer lately and I am looking for ways to analyze the problem to see if I can pinpoint the offending application or driver. I have several mini dumps on the computer but unfortunately I don't have the tool to even open them. My computer uses an AMD Athlon dual core 64 bit processor but I'm running 32 bit Vista Ultimate. Following Microsoft's instructions I downloaded the x64 debugger file for amd processors. When I tried to install it I got a message that it is not for use on my system and I'm told to contact my processor vendor (or something to that effect).

Mar 31, 2009I searched all over and I haven't found a solution, but I know there has to got to be way to do this. I shrank my XP 64 partition and booted from the Vista 64 disk and installed on the unallocated space.
Everything works except:
When I boot into Vista 64 my XP 64 partition is drive D:, how do I change the XP partition to any letter but D:? D: has all my data (when booted into XP 64).
I've read that it can't be done, but there has got to be a way, if I
had a 3 partition triple boot one of those partitions would be something
other than D.

Jul 9, 2009I have a dual-boot setup. Volume C runs Vista Home Premium. Volume F runs Vista Ultimate. (Vol. D is a recovery volume.) I would like to blow away C: and boot only from F. Would the following be a possible/advisable solution?
1. Boot from F.
2. Delete C.
3. Rename F "C".
4. Expand F (the new "C") to include the old C.

May 18, 2008Here is my situation: I have XP installed on a SATA drive in a computer I just put together (AMD x2 5600+, ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe, 2Gig Ram) and I want to install another SATA drive with Vista Ultimate 64 bit and I want the ability to dual-boot like some people do when they have 2 operating systems on the same drive but in different partitions. I originally install Vista Ultimate 64 bit as the O/S but it was incompatible with many of the programs I use so I installed XP Pro.Otherwise I liked Vista.

After encountering problems with vista I delted the vista partition and resized the xp partition back to it's original size. May 27, 2008I have a dual core processor but in device manager under computer it reads ACPI X64 BASESD PC should it not say ACPI X 64 multiprocessor pc or somthing along thoses lines like xp did ?. Sep 4, 2008I've scoured the related threads on such dual boot issues in this forum, and my actual situation appears not to be exactly addressed. I have a dual boot system, with XP in the primary partition (50GB), and with Vista in the first logical partition (150GB). XP sees itself naturally as being in C:, and sees Vista as in E: (absurdly seeing the CD/DVD drive as D:), whereas Vista sees itself as C: and XP being in D:.
What I want to do at the moment is NOT ONLY to enable myself to boot straight into Vista, and NOT ONLY to clear out XP, but also to move my Vista installation to the physical position where XP is at the moment, so that it is on the outside of the disk and would have better disk performance - the same reason that good HD defragmenters put the most-used files on the outside of disk or at least of the respective partition.............

Jul 8, 2008- I've already have XP Pro installed on my Dell Laptop
- Created a 15G partition on the same HDD using Partition Magic
- Went to BIOS and changed the Boot sequence to Boot From CD
- Inserted my Vista CD
- Vista started loading the files.........
- Entered the Product Key
- On the next screen, where you choose where to install vista, I have C, E, and F partitons and I can select each of them, but the "NEXT" is grayed out. I wanted to install the Vista on my F partion (all are NTFS) but the "Next" is grayed out and on the bottom left hand side there is a message saying" windows can not install the OS on this partion".
-Tried to delete the partion, format the partions, but getting the same message.
- 5 months ago I successfully was able to install the VISTA on this laptop, dualbooted with XP. But not anymore.
- My Admin formated my laptop 3 months ago as I moved to a different group within my organization and there wasn't a need to use VISTA. But now, I want to use both XP and VISTA again.

May 5, 2009I want to dual boot Vista64 and Windows 7. I have a 600GB drive with Vista and all programs. I also have a 1.5TB drive that I use for storage and a disk image of the 600GB drive. I know I need to partition the 1.5TB drive to install 7, but I've never done this before. Can I partition without having to format? If so, how? Can I use Disk Management to do this?

Aug 19, 2009Background info: vista installed on drive 1 xp installed on drive 2 dual booted just fine. A week ago my main drive stopped working - a manufacturer fault. I lost everything on the drive. I replaced the main drive 1, installed vista 64 again. Drive 2 was unaffected. I would like to dual boot so that I can run xp again, but don't know exactly how to set that up again. XP is already (I assume) on drive 2. There is no boot.ini on Drive 1 now. I know there are tutorials on how to set up dual booting, but I don't want to re-install xp if it's not necessary. The files on drive 2 are there and unaffected.
