System Drive Entire XP Boot Process Virualized
Mar 23, 2008If I install XP as a virtual machine under Vista, will XP still overwrite the MBR on the system drive or is the entire XP boot process virualized?

Cloning A Drive: Tranfer Entire Drive Incuding All Files And The Operating System From Current IDE HDD To A New SATA Drive
May 2, 2008I am Using Vista Ultimate 64. I would like to tranfer my entire drive incuding all files and the Operating system From my current IDE HDD to a new SATA Drive of the sames size (500 Gig) I need the IDE Drive for an older computer ( The 40 Gig IBM Deathstar still functions great, but all programs seem more bloated these Days)
Anyway I went to Administrative Tools and Formated the New Drive NFTS with no Drive Letter. But I cannot get it recognized as a transfer device when I go to system backup. Can I use 'C' on the second and soon to be only drive? If I have to use E or F for now can I change it back later. would that affect the file system? I intend to Low level Format the IDE and try cloning the old machine's XP Drive (32 bit) to it in the second place.

Oct 16, 2009I just got a new HP Vista Home Premium computer. My old XP Media Center computer with all my programs and files - I don't have that many pictures and no movies etc. - held about 25GB of stuff (both Defraggler and Norton Ghost indicated that 25GB was the size of the entire contents of the C: drive).
My Vista Home Premium computer, with all my programs and applications transferred over from the XP machine, has drive contents of a whopping 100GB(!) according to Defraggler. However, the Norton Ghost backup file of the C: drive is under 25GB in size. Both the XP and the Vista computer are on NTFS file systems. What can be bloating up this new Vista machine? I've looked around with Power Desk Pro 7 and don't see much. DeCrapifier doesn't identify anything obvious.
Delete The C Drive From A Dual Boot System?
Jul 9, 2009I have a dual-boot setup. Volume C runs Vista Home Premium. Volume F runs Vista Ultimate. (Vol. D is a recovery volume.) I would like to blow away C: and boot only from F. Would the following be a possible/advisable solution?
1. Boot from F.
2. Delete C.
3. Rename F "C".
4. Expand F (the new "C") to include the old C.
External Drive Trying To Boot:freezes The System
Apr 2, 2010I'm using HD from my old computer (XP) as an external drive on my Vista laptop. The HD has XP on it. When I power up it looks like the HD is trying to boot XP on top of my Vista and freezes the system. How can I avoid this attempted boot? Where should I place the jumper on the HD.

Apr 9, 2008I have a Vista Home Premium system that will not start. It gets as far as the system bootup progress bar, tries to start then suddenly the system shuts down. I have tried every possible recovery/repair technique I could find and still no luck. The system is using a Intel motherboard with Matrix Storage RAID which I have configured as RAID 1. In the repair console (from Vista DVD) I can read the drive from a prompt window so I assume the data is safe. I would like to back up the user data (photos, docs, email) and do a reinstall without the RAID 1 configuration. I have heard there are problems with Vista and the Matrix Storage controller.
Question is: How would I go about backing up a non-bootable Vista drive? I have another system running XP pro that I could mount the Vista drive to and copy the data to a portable USB drive. Is this a possibility? Will I run into any "access denied" issues when saving the data off to a backup drive? Also, the system was using Outlook 03 for email. What is the best way to recover the Outlook email data (messages, addresses, etc.) from a non-bootable disk? Is this email data in the same location as it is with XP?
Extend C: Partition Drive, NTFS System Boot
May 2, 2010I am runnig out of space in the C drive, but have plenty of space in D drive. How do I allocate more space from the D drive to the C drive? As you can see I have no memory in C:. What can I do to increase it? Do not want to purchase additional programs, not enough space to install them.

Jul 7, 2008my Vista booted with scrolling the green thingy about 7 times. Yesterday, all of a sudden, it started to boot with scrolling it about 20-25 times. I tried to turn off some programs to load with Windows (Steam, Adobe and iTunes). Also turned some services off/put to Manual (like Printer Spooler, iTunes Helper and so on), but that didn't help. When I installed Windows I found out that disabling service named Server made the boot time that short and it's still disabled. what might slow down the boot up process? I guess something related to network and networking services but I'm not sure.

May 6, 2009In my network, sometimes my user's laptops freeze during the logon script. Well the computers don't actually freeze, they just don't move beyond the logon script. When I go into task mamager, cpu is running at 100% (2 gb ram and very new processors) and the process taking up the most memory (48,748k)is svchost.exe I think it's associated with the windows search indexing but I'm not completely sure. On the Microsoft support site I saw that I could use the command tasklist /svc to see what is running in svchost. But I haven't figured out yet how to determine exactly what this svchost process is assoicated with so I can prevent it from running all the time.

Jul 1, 2008I've had Vista x64 installed for about 2 full months now and I've recently begun having a lot of problems. One being: 187 seconds. What the hell? Before you ask, here are my specs. Lots of fast memory, a fast processor, 7200RPM boot drive (not listed), and ****ing awful performance. What gets me is that the delayed boot time is before I even see the "Welcome" screen.
My current boot time distribution:
1. BIOS does all its fancy stuff very quickly (about 6-7 seconds or so)
2. I get to my boot loader and it defaults to Vista after 5 seconds (dual-booting Vista/Ubuntu).
3. I then see the Vista loading screen (black screen with green loading bar) for about 4-5 seconds................
Changing Boot Drive But Still Booting From Old Hard Drive
Mar 26, 2008I've upgraded my machine at some point in the last year, where I added a new 500GB drive and moved my C: partition across to it. The previous 250GB drive was left in for additional storage. Just recently (while upgrading my BIOS) I realised that my system was still booting from the 250GB drive even though Windows was on the other disk. There is a fair possibility in the not too distant future that I'll replace the 250GB disk with a larger disk, in which case I won't be able to boot. Is there a safe and reliable way to change it so that the system boots from the 500GB disk?

May 15, 2008I am trying a new install on a new machine. I have 2 WD 250 GB drives (not in RAID config). When VISTA installs it tells me the first drive is not recognized as boot drive and won't load. I tried to install on second drive and get a error message about a volume does not meet VISTA criteria (or something like that)and won't install. These are both brand new drives. Both drives are correctly identified in the BIOS.

Aug 22, 2008Right now i am booting off of an 80gb IDE hard drive but i want to clone the drive onto a 150gb sata drive and make the sata drive my boot drive. I have used Acronis True Image to clone the hard drive. I restarted and everything copied over in DOS successfully but then i tried to boot off of the sata drive and everything seemed to work out fine.. Vista load bar showed up, i was able to enter my password to log in and then it said preparing desktop like it was the first time i installed vista. It was stuck on that screen for a few mins and then a blank blue screen just came up. it seemed like it was the default background for Windows 2000 or something like that and it just stayed there. So now i'm back to booting off of the IDE drive...

Dec 25, 2008Right now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.
My question is-
Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).
Vista Sidebar Not Over Entire
Apr 30, 2009I currently have a Purple outline that is going all the way around the Windows Vista Sidebar... it's not over the entire thing, but it's around the Weather gadget. I'm not sure why it's there.. restarting PC, and sidebar didn't help. It's still there. The weather gadget basically has a ring of Purple around it that has never been there before. anyone know what this is about?see the purple.. it's more visible in person, and much worse looking.

I found a way to re-create it by doing a -RUN>shell:links- command. This did the trick, but now, when I drag a folder onto the Favorite Links, the folder itself is moved into -C:Users......Links,- and not just a shortcut to the folder. When I drag a folder onto Favorite Links, I want a shortcut to that folder appear -- I don't want the whole folder to move into -C:Users......Links. Mar 26, 2008Recently replaced an ACER factory load with a clean install of VISTA Home Preimum. My HD has 3 partitions C (228gb), D (227gb), and hidden (9gb). Would like to get rid of the hidden (ACER factory load ). My HD is 500 GB and my total use is 51 GB on C. Would it make sense to create 3 partitions C (small) for Vista and applications, D (small) for data and E (whats left) for whatever.
Is it possible / pratical to move the entire User folder to D or would this actually cause more future trouble than it is worth. Can any of this be done with Disk Management (when I right click on the hidden I get no options) or is a third party solution required ? Or should I just leave well enough alone
Multiple Monitors Resolution: Doesn't Fill Entire Screen
Mar 23, 2008I have a Samsung LCD 720P HDTV 32" that I have been using as a secondary monitor. I just bought a new computer (HP Elite M9060N) with vista on it and a Geforce 8500GTS NVIDIA card (factory installed). When I try to extend my desktop onto my tv (using Dualview) it doesn't fill the entire screen. It leaves a black ring around the outside. I've tried adjusting the resolution, but it doesn't work. In addition to the ring, the resolution on the tv looks horrible. I have the refresh rate maxed out and tried flip flopping which monitor is my primary but just can't seem to get it to work. I'm also using a Samsung LCD 20" monitor and connecting my extra monitor with an HDMI cable.........

System Would Not Boot Up
Mar 10, 2009I'm using Vista Home Premium. I have a spare 250GB SATA drive, so I thought I'd install XP on that, then dual boot with my original Vista drive (AMD Athlon dual-core at 3 GHz, 4GB RAM, 64 bit Vista Home Premium...when it boots). The XP install seemed to go fine, in that the drive would boot up alone (with the Vista drive disabled). But when I plugged my main Vista drive in, the system would not boot up at all. I would get a Drive Read error. I don't get it. Both drives boot up fine by themselves, but when both are running, neither will boot. Do I need to set one drive's jumpers or something? I don't know SATA drive jumper settings, or if that's even the issue.

Jul 2, 2008I am having some problems regarding booting up my Advent laptop, it came pre - installed with Vista home premium. it just wont boot up anymore all i can do is access the bios screen, the handbook it came with gives me information to press F8 to enter system recovery but sadly this does nothing, but make a beep each time i press the key. The laptop is just out of its 12 month guarantee so could be costly to repair. I wonder if any one can shed some light on what i can do to solve this problem.

Aug 15, 2009I installed Vista Home Premium and got a nasty hard drive failure error. So I was going to boot from the install CD and get into the Recovery Options in order to run chkdsk on the drive. The system won't boot from CD. It actaully starts booting from the CD but after the loading files step it just boots into the installed Vista environment.
