System Recovery Left Almost No Storage Space!

Apr 7, 2008

I previously had a problem on my Gateway Laptop Computer - Gateway Core2 Duo Centrino, that came pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Premium, which I could not fix. I had to do a System Recovery using the on-screen program and did not back up any of my files, in attempt to clear out everything that I had on the computer. After I completed this process, I set up my desktop and internet, and started over. When reviewing my Hard Disk Drives on my "Computer" menu, I notice that my C: Drive is almost all the way full (8.55 GB free of 139 GB).

Although I downloaded a few programs and set up my Internet Security, I am sure I did not install anything large enough to use up almost all of the computers storage space for programs and files. By doing the System Recovery I thought that it would erase everything so that my computer would be back to it's factory condition. Could my previous files still be in the computer? After searching this forum, I did not find any information on the specific question that convinsed me of the soultion,
or a course of action.

I created a restore point and went into the System Tools menu and attempted the disk cleanup on the recovery drive C: where Windows Vista is stored and then cleaned up the up the Shadow Copies, and nothing helped. I went through many windows folders and found nothing that would amount to the vast amount of space that is apparently taken up.

No Space Left On Vista (C Drive)?

May 4, 2010

I keep getting a message flash up on my screen saying I have almost no space left on my Vista (C drive. In the 'Computer' section it says I have 4.40 GB free out of 116 GB and the whole bar is coloured red (which I assume means critical!) I really have no idea why I would be using so much space, I don't really download anything, I have programmes such as Spotify and Itunes but even they don't get used often. I got rid of things like Google Earth but it's made no difference. I have a Toshiba Laptop and I seem to remember that almost half the space was taken up the first day I took it home, could it be that Toshiba have filled it with unnecessary programmes?!

Limited Restore Points: "Used Shadow Copy Storage Space"

Mar 23, 2008

It has been bugging me: why there are so few System Restore Points on my system (and on the one occasion I really neeeded it, only 1 which was too recent)[System = Vista HP laptop, 100GB disk, System Restore having private >11GB of its own disk space but 10GB still free, only C monitored]

Here's a partial answer that raises other questions...I ran Cmd "as Admin", typed "vssadmin List ShadowStorage" and noted it said the "used shadow copy storage space" is 10.871GB of the allocated 11.451... which would explain why I currently see only 4 restore points in System Restore...[wow... all the way back to 20 Feb] But I haven't been doing *that* much! How come Vista [HP] is eating ~2.5GB per restore point? Is it snapshotting the entire Windows system? Even in theory this is close to useless when Vista creates scheduled restore points once or twice a day (the 2 may have been an update install): since Vista doesn't need to be restarted that often it might be days before a problem is noted on restart... by which time any good restore points are gone. [In practice it was totally useless...] What's triggering restore point creation if there are no updates or applications installed/uninstalled?Is there any way it can be tweaked to gain a longer history... or, should I turn it off, reclaim the disk space and use Acronis' "Safe Zone" and/or rely on my external Acronis backups?

System Fat16 File System Recovery Won't Work

Jun 4, 2008

I have a system that has FAT16 file system on it. I have that file system on that for some reason so I don’t need to upgrade on that….but recently I had some files deleted and now I need to get them back. They are important for my official use and hold great importance. I know that there is software for recovery but since I have a FAT16 file system I guess that all won’t work on that.

No Operating System On System Recovery

Nov 5, 2009

I recently have managed to gain a corrupt file on my computer this basically means my computer does not startup. I have a boot disk available for my system (Windows vista x64 ultimate). However when it comes to trying to select a operating system
in the system recovery options the box is blank and i have no operating system to select. I have a feeling the fact i have sata raid setup on my computer is the reason as to why i cannot see my C: drive. I know this will fix my computer if i can only locate an operating system to detect. I have already carried out all the usual suspects of what is wrong like system restore etc but i cannot find a hard drive to restore.

System Is Out Of Disk Space

Aug 17, 2009

I wanted a fast drive, so I bought a solid state drive. But I'm a poor college student and so got the 64GB one, which only has 58GB of space (because Lenovo put something on a separate partition which they say I cannot get rid of). The only thing installed is WinVist and MS Office 2007 (and McAfee and other progrms that came with the PC which weren't taking up much space).

Those two programs took up 30GB of space. Yesterday, some Windows backup thing started to run and said "There isn't enough room on this drive to do the backup, do you want to do it anyway? (I'm paraphrasing)". Since I like having things backed up, I said Yes anyway (and to see what happened). Now I have 1 GB free on my drive. Lenovo won't help me with Windows because that's "a configuration issue" and they don't do that. How do I get rid of this backup and get at least 20GB back? Then, how can I configure Windows and Office to take up less disk space?

It seems like Lenovo sold me a PC with a disk drive that doesn't have enough space to operate correctly. And they won't help me resolve the problem. Also, it seems that it is not as easy to separate your data in WinVista as magazine articles would have you believe. I tried configuring it so my "Documents" was on another external drive, but that proved too difficult.

System Disk Not Allocated Space Properly

May 12, 2008

I was wondering why my new Vista system would only hold eight restore points. I recently used up that space very quickly when I instaled a bunch of my old programs that I used in XP. Turns out that my Vista restore points are about TWO GIGS EACH, compared to 200MB beach in my old XP system. By default, Vista appears to allocate a maximum size of 15% of the drive's total space for restore points. Or it might be a fixed number, I'm not sure. On my system disk, it's currently a tad over 16 gigs. That much space would've stored 80 restore points in XP! To change that space allocation requires some command line hoop jumping, rather than just moving a slider in the GUI.

Is There A Way To Increase The Amount Of Space Available To System Restore?

Mar 23, 2008

I have a 120gb hard drive with around 20gb free at any one time. I have noticed that most of the time I only have one automatically created restore point. I am aware that the number of restore points is dependant on free hard drive space, however I had many more available restore points under Windows XP with same amount of free hard drive space. Is there a way I can increase the amount of space available to System Restore? I have looked at the settings and can't find anything.

What Default HDD Space Vista Reserves For System Restore Points?

Jun 9, 2009

how to change the size of the HDD space Vista reserves for Restore points. I still would like to know;

1) What is the default HDD space Vista Reserves for System Restore Points?
2) Another reply to my Part 1 question indicated a user was experiencing the same issue, losing 3 to 4GB of HDD space a day...and Dell instructed that user to turn Off Restore to fix the problem. This to me is not a fix.

Given that I was losing 3 to 4GB space a day......was it as a Resullt of System Restore Points or could there be other issues? My PC is running fine except for this issue. CouldWould all New Restore Points save a file 3 to 4GB in size, and if that is so, does this Restore Point File just keep its size, grew Larger....and consume 3 to 4GB of HDD space daily and go on forever? This just doesn't seem so, I have been running this PC for nearly 2 years and I just saw this issue start about 2 weeks ago.....seems it started at or near the time of the Vista SP2 Download

i can't open any programs at all. i can't open explorer at all. i tried a system restore, but it said it failed and did not reset anything. i don't know if it will help to boot it from the DVD, in fact, when i think about it, the DVD drive has not been working. if i try to put a CD or DVD in, the drive disappears from my system.. so i'm not sure that will be an option either short of going out and buying a new drive.

OS: Recognize The System Recovery Disk?

Apr 3, 2008

What are the basic differences between XP & Vista? All we do is surf the web, email and download an occasional game. Norton AntiVirus is always on and always up-to-date. My XP machine is dying big time & I can't figure out how to save it. It won't recognize the System Recovery disk that came with the machine, but it will recognize other CDs. That CD must be bent or whatever. The SPs are up to date. I'm running Office XP and it is taking Word and Excel 7 or 8 seconds to load; it used to open in a snap. I installed the latest edition of Firefox and loading web pages with it is taking too long. Most pages should just snap open. I guessed we've been "phished" or whatever because some of the ads I run into know that I live in Seattle. Our network connection is DSL and we haven't made any changes of any consequence that I know of to this machine in ages. I put SpyBot on it a week ago and twice when WinXP started, the Spybot folder opened. Not the program but the folder.

Not Switch Off The System Recovery Utility

May 19, 2008

First and foremost create a Recovery Disc and keep it safe and do not switch off the System Recovery utility. Do not remove the bloatware came with your PC unless you are desperate for space in your Hard disc,if and when you remove them do it one by one monitoring the response of the PC. If you couldn't get SP1,don't loose your sleep over it because it is not for the benefit of the user and it is designed to stop the user using other free third party softwares and tools(in my opinion anyway and remember I am not an expert).

Do not rely solely on the advices and do your own research as well because these so called advisers haven't provided me with tangible proof of their competence. Most of them hail vista as the best but wouldn't say why. If you ask any questions, they will blame you first for not asking the question properly and point you to a website to learn how to ask questions. Then they will request the third party software details and blame them. Now the turn of your hardware incompatibility which creates the problem. When everything fails they will accuse you of being an Ubuntu user. I suspect these so called experts use Ubuntu or some thing and pretend to be Vista experts and trying to damage the image of Vista. However, there are many helpful sites available and one of them is: www.vistax64.com If you do the basic housekeeping maintenance you will do fine.

System Recovery Stuck, Passwaord

A screen came up that said to perform a System Recovery, so this morning I did the Recovery, but now I've been stuck on this same screen because it wants a password, which I don't know it, nor can I remember it. It's a Dell Inspiron 1525 which I bought from Dell April '08. Is there some way to get a password with having to be charged for Dell's help? I'm thinking of just tossing the laptop in the recycle trashbin, and buying a new brand.

System Recovery Startup Freezing

Feb 11, 2009

I have an Acer 9410 laptop with Windows Vista and I had taken it to computer techs to fix some mouse pad problems as well as some startup freezing problems. They said it passed their PC check so didn't appear as anything was wrong. They said I could try to do system recovery to restore it back to its factory settings. Well, when I initially tried it, it didn't work so then, not thinking this through and not being as familiar with this as I would like to have been, I accidentally rand the Anytime Upgrade CD thinking it was also the recovery CD.

Of course, I found out after the fact that it was just that, so it reinstalled another version of Vista on my computer which then completely wiped everything including the Acer emPowering Technology software which contains the software to do the system Recovery. But it also removed some of my original drives like the memory card drivers, microphone, and maybe the webcam. In the process it saved a bunch of old Windows files to my hard drive. Are those still useful and is there any way
I can recover those drivers besides getting the recovery CD's which I can purchase from Acer or the store where I bought it from for around $40.

Locate The System Recovery Software

Apr 26, 2009

I aquired a Gateway GT5058 with a bad hard drive from my neighbor and I will note it had Win XP Media Center Edition installed. The bad hard drive was fully accessible from my Vista machine but the primary partition gives an "error to load operating system". Visible inspection of the hard drive shows a melted area so I am shocked the drive was able to be accessed since it will not boot in it's native machine. I had an old 40 gig drive laying around so I used a recovery disk from my Gateway laptop and low and behold it installed just fine and the machine is fully functional so I want to get another drive for it.

First problem is that the previous owner might be able to locate the system recovery software or he might not...I will probably know this in a few days. If he can locate it then I have no problems but I am preparing to have to restore this machine an alternative way which is what I need help with...........
