It won't start in safe mode & system restore (6 points) has not enough free space to restore the disk (I was backing up files into a folder to copy to an external drive filling the drive when it crashed - doh) & it says the Recovery X the disk is not in the selected restore point. Is there a way of copying files to enable the system resore to work or some other things to try.

Start Up Repair Restore System Update

May 15, 2010

A while ago on my desktop Vista I was installing some updates. After I restarted the computer, it went straight to startup repair. I used system restore to restore to a point before I installed the updates. My computer worked fine. Thinking it hadn't been the updates that had caused the problem, I updated again but with the same results. This has also happned on other computers of mine. Ever since then, I have never installed a single update. I am wondering if this is a good idea or not.

4% Free On Drive C : How Free Up Space Make Computer Perform Best

Apr 8, 2009

I have a HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop computer. HP Total Care Advisor tells me only 4% is free on drive C. I ran disk defragmentation, disk cleanup, and uninstalled a good amount of programs I no longer use. It did not do anything. Once and awhile I get a prompt in the bottom right corner saying that I have low disk space. When I click on it it wants to run disk cleanup which does absolutely nothing. How do I free up space and make my computer perform the best it can?

How To Bring Back The Amount Of Free Space And Used Space On A Hard Drive

Nov 28, 2008

I would like to get vista to use the login style used in Win 2000 ... ctrl+alt+del gives a login box in which to enter the user name and password.

Win XP Pro had this option also, but, it's default was like vista (pictures showing all users).

I have been able to get the ctrl+alt+del part but instead of the login box I still get pictures.

Is There A Way To Increase The Amount Of Space Available To System Restore?

Mar 23, 2008

I have a 120gb hard drive with around 20gb free at any one time. I have noticed that most of the time I only have one automatically created restore point. I am aware that the number of restore points is dependant on free hard drive space, however I had many more available restore points under Windows XP with same amount of free hard drive space. Is there a way I can increase the amount of space available to System Restore? I have looked at the settings and can't find anything.

What Default HDD Space Vista Reserves For System Restore Points?

Jun 9, 2009

how to change the size of the HDD space Vista reserves for Restore points. I still would like to know;

1) What is the default HDD space Vista Reserves for System Restore Points?
2) Another reply to my Part 1 question indicated a user was experiencing the same issue, losing 3 to 4GB of HDD space a day...and Dell instructed that user to turn Off Restore to fix the problem. This to me is not a fix.

Given that I was losing 3 to 4GB space a day......was it as a Resullt of System Restore Points or could there be other issues? My PC is running fine except for this issue. CouldWould all New Restore Points save a file 3 to 4GB in size, and if that is so, does this Restore Point File just keep its size, grew Larger....and consume 3 to 4GB of HDD space daily and go on forever? This just doesn't seem so, I have been running this PC for nearly 2 years and I just saw this issue start about 2 weeks ago.....seems it started at or near the time of the Vista SP2 Download

Windows Failed To Start, System Restore

Dec 29, 2008

My laptop (Advent 8117 running Vista if that helps) has been working fine, then this morning things went pear-shaped. To begin with things worked as usual - Everything seemed to load up as normal, I left the room for maybe 5-10 minutes and when I returned there was a black screen. I waited a while and nothing happened so I restarted. It comes up with 'Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.' From there I can either start normally or run a repair. It doesn't seem to matter what I click here because I get a 'Techguys' support thing come up either way but now nothing on it works. To begin with I ran the Repair Environment, but it couldn't fix it. I also got to try a System Restore but I seem to have no points to restore to. Now I can't get the Techguys page to do anything. So I tried running in Safe Mode but once again I'm faced with the unmoving Techguys page, and the same goes for when I try and load from the Last Know Good Configuration. I desperatly don't want to have to lose everything.

Where Did All My Free Space Go?

Nov 24, 2009

It happens to everyone eventually. Your hard drive is suddenly full and you are left wondering where did all my free space go? Now you must begin the task of deleting old files and folders to reclaim space but where do you start? In the past I would suggest manually checking the sizes of all of your folders so you know where to begin the hunt but now there is a great utility called WinDirStat that does the work for you.  After inspecting a drive you are shown exactly how much data is in each folder, what file types are taking up the most space and even a visual representation of the files on your disk....

Free Up More Space On Your Computer

Apr 16, 2007

The Windows Disk Cleanup utility does a good job of deleting old Microsoft temp files, logs, memory dumps and other OS related junk files. It can free up a lot of space on your computer but it often leaves a lot of junk behind.  A great program that I use all the time on my computers is called CCleaner. Not only does it clean the Microsoft OS related junk files from your computer, it also removes junk files from other popular applications such as Firefox.  Additionally, it is very good at locating other temporary files.....

Free Space Dramatic Decrease

Nov 14, 2008

over the past 3 months, my free space has decreased dramatically! i had about 14GB of free space and now it's down to 5.5GB. During these months i haven't installed anything, the only thing i do is surf the web, update some old programs and download movies which i transfer to an external hard drive. So i haven't added anything to decrease the free space.

I've noticed that on the user folder, google earth takes some 1.8GB of space. The folder C:Windowswinsxs is growing almost every day and now it has reached 9.57GB So my question is can how can i free some 8GB safely? Is there any folder that keeps temp files that can be safely removed?

Assigning Free Hard Drive Space

Mar 23, 2008

Have just suffered a catastrophic software meltdown and had to do a clean install of Vista and Office. All are running fine, but I have noticed that instead of a single drive C like I used to have, Vista has partitioned the hard drive. I have managed to free up all the space on the Single Volume that used to hold my data but I cannot reassign the free space to the main drive C. I can shrink the volume on the free simple volume but it only creates yet another one and I don't seem to be able to expand the space on the main drive

Free Up Disk Space By Deleting Backup Files

Feb 25, 2007

Windows Vista has loads of new backup features such as previous versions of your documents and system state points that are part of System Restore.  All of these features are turned on by default and offer you a great deal of backup protection. However, you pay a big price in disk space.  Every once in a while when your system is stable and you need to free up some disk space, it is a good idea to clear all of these previous versions of your files and System Restore points from your computer. This is a very easy way to free up a few gigabytes of space across all of your hard drives.

To get started, just follow these steps: ...

Cannot Repair/restore MBR Toshiba Notebook

Jun 21, 2008

I can not figure out how to repair/restore the MBR on my Toshiba Satellite notebook PC. Used to be easy with WinXP, I just popped in my legal copy of WinXP and chose the option, or in a command prompt typed fixmbr. But with Vista and a Toshiba laptop that has recovered CDs (two) I am clueless. I have tried the recovery CD, but it looks like it wants to toast the system, wipe everything, to do this. No option to restore MBR.

This all came about when earlier today I installed XUbuntu Linux 8.04. But I want linux off my system, it is gone, but its GRUB bootloader remains. I can boot into Windows VISTA, but I would prefer to just get rid of that linux grub bootloader and restore the Vista MBR bootloader. But how do I fix the Vista MBR using recovery CDs that came with the laptop?

I had previously been backing up to that drive but deleted those backup files. Yes, i have "view hidden files" turned on and still nothing except for a MediaID.bin file which consumes a whopping 1KB. Have no idea what is using 6GB of D drive space.

Use System Restore To Restore Back To Certain Restore Points?

May 26, 2008

Why can't I use system restore to restore back to certain restore points? I was only successful twice with it. When my laptap was new and when I used it after re-formatting my hard drive. On all occassions after those two instances I can never restore back to any restore point. It always says that "unspecified error" line. If Microsoft doesn't know what happend, how could I. Why did they bother putting system restore if it doesn't work all the time anyway. It gives you a false sense of security.

Repair: Windows Failed To Start

Dec 19, 2009

I have a dell 1525 running vista home premium 32bit. Just a few minutes ago I was transfering music from my hard drive to my external hard drive, while on the internet looking at videos. I noticed that the file transfer process was taking a while so i decided to cancel the process. Some error message popped up after a while, being stupid I didn't write them down and kept watching my videos. My desktop disappeared and i cou;dn't start task manager so i decided to restart my computer... When I restarted I was greeted with "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.
2. Choose your language settings and click next.
3. Click "repair your computer"

It also gives me the following options:

4. Safe Mode
5. Safe Mode with networking
6. Safe Mode with Command Prompt
7. Last known good configuration
8. Start Windows normally

When I restart booting from the reinstall dvd from dell and i get to the repair my computer part, vista isn't listed in the options to repair. And I can't browse my main hard drive. Also when I start into safe mode, all the driver load then I get a quick flash of a blue screen which says(i video tapped it then slowed it down to read the message): A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.........

Not Start Up, “Launch Startup Repair”

Jul 11, 2009

I shut my computer off last night as I normally do before I went to bed. It shut down without any issues. Everything was the same as it normally is. When I went to turn on my computer today, it goes through the Dell startup screen, then it tells me there might be a problem with some hardware or something to that effect and gives me the option to either “Launch Startup Repair” or “Start Window Normally”, then windows attempts to start (has the green scrolling bar at the bottom). Either of these options take me to the same place next which is a screen that states “System Recovery Options”, and asks me to select my keyboard language. So I did and hit “next” to continue to a screen that asks me to sign into my account on the computer, and then it took me to another page that displayed a box of system recovery tools.

Being a little confused about what was happening, I selected the option for “Startup Repair”. When it finished I chose to restart the computer as it noted that if the problem was fixed it would start normally. It didn’t start normally and I went through the same process again when it rebooted. I have tried this option many times today, and it isn’t working. I also have tried a few times the option for “Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool”. It goes trough the tests, says nothing about finding a problem, then the computer restarts to the same situation............

Start-Up Repair Not Work, No Boot

Jul 29, 2009

I have an Acer Extensa laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium installed. Its been working great for over a year now untill yesterday when all of a sudden it wouldn't boot up properly. It continued to go to start-up repair, but that kept on failing. After trying all other tools, (system restore had no restore points for some odd reason)... I tried safe mode. That did not work. It instead went back to the start-up repair screen. The same warning message popped up everytime it failed "Cannot repair automatically, click finish blah blah blah". When I bought this laptop from Best Buy, I did not recieve any type of Disk for Vista, it was already loaded on there... I would rather not do a clean install.

Space Allocated For Storing Restore Points?

Apr 20, 2008

I have never fully understood the relationship between disk space and storage of restore points. In terms of percentage, how much space is allocated for storing restore points? Or, to put it in another way, at what point will the system start dumping the oldest restore points in order to make room for the new ones? Am I missing other factors that belong in the equation ?
