Cannot Repair/restore MBR Toshiba Notebook
Jun 21, 2008
I can not figure out how to repair/restore the MBR on my Toshiba Satellite notebook PC. Used to be easy with WinXP, I just popped in my legal copy of WinXP and chose the option, or in a command prompt typed fixmbr. But with Vista and a Toshiba laptop that has recovered CDs (two) I am clueless. I have tried the recovery CD, but it looks like it wants to toast the system, wipe everything, to do this. No option to restore MBR.
This all came about when earlier today I installed XUbuntu Linux 8.04. But I want linux off my system, it is gone, but its GRUB bootloader remains. I can boot into Windows VISTA, but I would prefer to just get rid of that linux grub bootloader and restore the Vista MBR bootloader. But how do I fix the Vista MBR using recovery CDs that came with the laptop?

A while ago on my desktop Vista I was installing some updates. After I restarted the computer, it went straight to startup repair. I used system restore to restore to a point before I installed the updates. My computer worked fine. Thinking it hadn't been the updates that had caused the problem, I updated again but with the same results. This has also happned on other computers of mine. Ever since then, I have never installed a single update. I am wondering if this is a good idea or not.

It won't start in safe mode & system restore (6 points) has not enough free space to restore the disk (I was backing up files into a folder to copy to an external drive filling the drive when it crashed - doh) & it says the Recovery X the disk is not in the selected restore point. Is there a way of copying files to enable the system resore to work or some other things to try.

When my laptop is awakened out of sleep, it should enter right into Windows, but instead comes up to a screen that gives my name and underneath my name it says *locked* --- I click on my name and then Windows opens up.
Instead, I would like to see the machine come out of sleep mode and go instantaneously into Windows.

Friends Toshiba a205-s5000 satellite laptop w 32bit Vista
Will boot fine into safe mode/sm w networking..
Normal boot just sits at loading screen..
Have tried:
Disabling all startup apps and services -same
System restore as far back as it will go - completed, but the same
Recovery functions from boot menu - complete, but the same
Last known good config - same
Disable Driver Signature Enforcement - same
Enable low resolution video - same
Biggest problem is no Toshiba/MS restore CD/DVD available.
I do have a clean copy of XP I could try.
I have no problem formatting and starting over w XP, but it just seems like if it will boot to safe mode, it should be fixable ... software/drivers being the issue.

Multiple support reps at Toshiba have told me that Toshiba does not recommend using the hibernate mode as it may damage the system board. They referred to it as "overhibernation" and they recommend only using the full shut down. Sounds screwy to me. Opinions please

I have a Toshiba A205 that came with Vista installed. I’ve obtained a set of XP Toshiba recovery disks for this computer which I want to install in a dual-boot arrangement. I know how to set up the dual-boot but I am afraid to run the XP recovery disk for fear it will over-write my Vista partition (C instead of installing to the D: partition I’ve set up. how to use a Toshiba recovery disc to install to an alternate partition?

each time I boot my Vista PC the system is very slow to establish a connection to the network. How do I go about troubleshooting this problem? I have a SOHO network config. One Vista PC, one W2K3 server on the network. Verizon supplied FIOS router gets me on the internet. The network runs great once it is connected. When I click diagnose and repair on the network icon the result is a "cant repair the problem" answer.

I am looking for some perspective on an issue I am having. I have a Toshiba A305-6860 and it has been having driver issues for a little while. I just now got done doing an out of the box restore and the same issue is there, which hasn't happened before. The main current issues is with the optical drive driver. When the computer was new a while ago it had vista x64 hp installed. the optical drive then was called the Toshiba (TSST) TS-L632 it worked well, needed an update to take care of some 301 error but still worked after that.
since i first got the pc i have had 7 on it, from the first beta released up to the RC 7100, which was the last installed OS before today's out of box install. before I had done the restore the DVD was showing in device manager as a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T40N ATA Device, since that has changed the drive only does some things, it was able to burn, but not able to read dvd's, in particular my new RTM 7600 copy of 7. It will however run the restore DVD's. Does anyone have any thing to add perhaps? I have tried every combination of uninstall/reboot/install, etc. I do not know why or when the device changed drivers, but roll back is not a highlighted option. I think I am going to try and wipe this drive clean and try again, but with the DVD not working with this DVD i cannot boot from it to do an install either, although it has worked on 2 other pcs.

I have a Tecra M5 (PTM51E) running Vista Ultimate. I would like to configure Bitlocker using the TPM which is on board. I am aware that Bitlocker can be used without a TPM, but this requires the user to have an external token e.g. on a USB drive which they have to insert at boot time. I would rather use the TPM mode so there will be no need for this.
I have flashed the BIOS to v3.60 which is the latest. Before I was able to flash the BIOS from within Vista (which is the only option provided on the Toshiba European support site) I found I had to load the drivers for the "Value Added Package", without this the BIOS updater simply says "Computer not supported". Another way to do it is get the BIOS for the PTM51U from the US site which allows you to write the BIOS updater onto a bootable floppy...........

Why is it that these Notebooks only are available with WindowsXP? I am
looking to buy one with 2GB of memory.so Vista would surely run which in
time I would upgrade to Windows7.
I purchased Microsoft 2007 Small Business.which installs with a DVD.
Notebooks don't come with DVD's. If I copy the DVD to a Flash
Drive.would Small Business install from the flash drive? Or, as I have
been told in the past, Microsoft software cannot be copied.period.no matter what you try to copy it to. It may copy but it will not run the Install file. Is this true? How would I install Small Business onto the Notebook?

I am looking forward to buy a netbook with windows 7 ; I?ve seen lots of configurations for Notebooks and Desktops, going from 2GB to 8 GB RAM. Of course more RAM is ok ; The thing is I want an acceptable computer, and the most I?ve seen announced is 2 GB RAM I know it will probably run Windows 7; but is 2 GB an acceptable number? Supposing a buy a computer with a Core 2 Duo processor and having in mind that I don?t care for games or graphics at all is the above configuration OK?

I know this question has been asked a thousand time, but I can't find the answer with Google - sorry :-) I am running WLM version 12.0.1606 on BOTH my desktop PC and my notebook PC. My notebook and desktop are on a Wi-Fi - so they can Share files. I want my Windows Live Contact list to be the SAME on both the desktop PC and the notebook PC at all times. When I add, delete, or modify a contact on either PC, then I want that same modification to be AUTOMATICALLY (and instantly) reflected in the contact list on the other PC. They are connected via Wi-Fi, so it sounds like a simple task - but I can't find a link that explains how to set it up.

My situation is I have a home network with one desktop running XP Home, attached to a wireless router by CAT5 cable and a local Epson printer. The Epson printer was shared as a network printer. I have another NEC notebook, which accessing the network very fine through the WiFi, and can print properly. I just purchased a new Sony notebook that run Vista Business. I set up the network as follows :
Workgroup : checked and was the same as my desktop
Network : Private
Printer sharing : On
File sharing : On
I can see my desktop in the network map. The notebook can browse the internet by using IE without any problem. However, I cannot add the network printer. I choose "Add new printer", and choose "add new network printer", the result is no network printer found. I also try to add new local printer, and build a new port, and key in my shared printer location "\Zeeman_DesktopeemanEpson", but got the response that the port is not correct.
