Corrupt Registry Repair
Mar 22, 2009computer 'cannot load the hive (file systemrootsystem32configSOFTWARE...' and has been unable to repair itself. I have tried system restore and I cannot remember the exact message but basically there appear to be no restore points to go back to. Can I edit or repair or restore the registry using the command prompt?

Mar 23, 2008Something has been bothering me a lot in Vista 64 Ultimate SP1. Every now and then, when Windows starts, it says my disk structure is corrupt and I should run chkdsk in order to fix it. When I try to run CHKDSK under Vista, I get a "insufficient disk space to fix master table (MFT)", and CHKDSK aborts. I can't create folders, files, Windows Update fails ...
The good thing is a have a dual boot system and when I choose XP, Windows XP detects that the Vista partition needs chkdsk and this time, chkdsk runs completely and fixes the Vista partition. So I can restart the computer, choose Vista partition again and this time everything will work fine.
Problem is, this is happening too often. Like every day. And it is such a hassle to start Vista, get the error message, restart, choose XP, fix Vista, restart, choose Vista and then have everything normal. Any of you guys have an idea on WHY my disk structure is getting corrupt all the time? My Vista installation is very recent, and I did a full format in the partition before installing it.

Mar 22, 2010my friends laptop froze, he waited a bit to see if it would come back but it didnt. so he rebooted it...but it didnt come back on...we tried again and eventually it started but he cant access windows because it says that there is something wrong and that windows cannot repair it...
He isnt amazing with pc's so he gave it to me so I could have a go at gettin it back on track... so far nothin has changed same screen comes up sayin that windows cannot repair itself... says something about the file system32/drivers/kkmbyd.sys is corrupt. I tried to restore to an earlier point in time but it wont work cause it says that there are no earlier versions saved. They only idea that came into my head was to fully restore windows, but his hardrive has a lot of valuable data and im worried it will be lost
Could Not Start Up Due To A Missing Or Corrupt Registry
Sep 23, 2009I just recieved my new desktop from CyberPowerPC last Thursday. On Monday morning, Windows could not start up due to a missing or corrupt registry. However, Sunday night when I shut off the PC, it was still working perfectly fine. When I turn on the PC, this is the screen I get: The only options given to me afterwards are 3 safe modes, attempt to reboot with the last known good setting, or start Windows normally. Choosing any of those options just gives me the missing/corrupt registry screen again and sends me back to those 5 choices, OR screen just goes black and nothing happens.
I've tried to use the CyberPowerPC Windows recovery disk that came with the PC, setting boot priority in the BIOS to CD/DVD drive to the top. Screen tells me to press any key to boot from CD, then this screen appears: Once it finishes loading, this appears: But afterwards, the screen becomes blank, and I see the monitor actually darkening. The numlock light on my keyboard darkens, meaning that turned off or something too. Here is what CyberPower has told me to do: "The error message you are seeing is a corrupted Windows system file that would require the operating system to be reinstalled. This can be done by booting directly from the Cyberpower Recovery disc. Make sure theoptical drive is set as the first boot device in the BIOS and tap the ENTER key as the computer starts to boot the computer off the disc rather than the hard drive." But of course, that isn't working...The PC is still new, so I have no problem with losing any data if it comes to that.
Corrupt Disk After Format With Linux Settings.
Mar 6, 2009I was trying to install Fedora 10 (linux distro)
but I had accidentally changed settings for both hard drives.. Meaning I formatted both hard drives.. and when the installation failed, I had the error "no operating system found"
I had a C:/ drive
and an X:/ drive.. I can't see my C:/ drive.. but in CMD I'm using X:/ but it was formatted so.. hehe.. no operating system..
I used the Vista DVD.. I tried to format but I get a disk error.

Now I'm not sure what to do to format my drives to NTFS..
I wana get my data back aswell.. But I doubt it'll be there if it's there.. I can't see..
I just delete to partitions from disk 0..
So I have 153 Gb free space..
But Windows install says "Windows is unable to find system volume that meets its criteria for installation" ?
Failed To Start: Registry Missing Or Corrupt
Sep 11, 2009I have been having serious difficulty getting my laptop to start in the last few months but have usually been able to solve the problems for a while until they come back but now I am faced with a new boot issue that I cannot fix.
When I turn on the laptop, after about 5 minutes I get the message "windows failed to start because the system registry file is missing or corrupt" and gives this location windowssystem32configsystem and also status: oxc000000f. I am instructed to boot from the vista dvd and repair windows, startup problems or whatever but when I try this I get the exact same message described above.
I have had a lot of startup problems recently but they have always been solved either by booting from the dvd and reparing startup problems, or more commonly, by running the chkdisk which would generally have my laptop running well for a week or so before new problems occurred. I've searched the web but people keep suggesting booting from the vista dvd which as I said isnt working. No matter what I try I get the same message, safe mode etc will also not work.

It tells me this is volume Device Hard disk Volume3
Question is, Which hard drive is that?
In disk manager I have the following
Disk 0 F: drive
Disk 1 D: drive
Disk 2 C: drive
Disk 3 H&P: drive
Disk 4 G: drive
Disk 5 M: drive
I guess that's kinda messed up..huh!
plus other removable cf card / sd card / mmc card drives
I need to Chkdsk the volume3.

Cannot Do A Repair Install With OEM Disk
May 22, 2008I am running Vista Home Premium and want to do a "repair install." I have an OEM DVD with Vista. I have performed the repair process in the past (I think it was called Upgrade), but now that I have installed SP1, it won't work. I slipstreamed a DVD with SP1 according to the tutorial, but it still indicates that the existing version of Vista is newer than the one on the slipstreamed DVD and says that the upgrade functionality is disabled.
I noticed on the tutorial that you need a Retail version of Vista to slipstream with SP1. Is the OEM version different than the Retail version? Is that why I cannot do a Repair Install?
How To Repair Disk Permissions
Sep 10, 2008I removed all permissions of Authenticated Users for my C: drive (entire permissions). What I did is as follows:

. Properties
. Security
. Deny all permissions for Authenticated Users
Now I can not reach my drive, can not change permissions again, and can not restore permissions etc. Even Admin account can not do anything.
Vista Repair Disk Not Working
May 14, 2008I have lots of bad sectors and not even able to do a restore to a previous restore point. I tried chkdsk/f but on restart it doesn't do the chkdsk. I have a Vista repair disk and I ran the repair but I still have the sector errors that prevent going to the previous restore point.

Dec 19, 2009I have a dell 1525 running vista home premium 32bit. Just a few minutes ago I was transfering music from my hard drive to my external hard drive, while on the internet looking at videos. I noticed that the file transfer process was taking a while so i decided to cancel the process. Some error message popped up after a while, being stupid I didn't write them down and kept watching my videos. My desktop disappeared and i cou;dn't start task manager so i decided to restart my computer... When I restarted I was greeted with "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.
2. Choose your language settings and click next.
3. Click "repair your computer"
It also gives me the following options:

When I restart booting from the reinstall dvd from dell and i get to the repair my computer part, vista isn't listed in the options to repair. And I can't browse my main hard drive. Also when I start into safe mode, all the driver load then I get a quick flash of a blue screen which says(i video tapped it then slowed it down to read the message): A problem has been detected and windows[COLOR=#05408F ! important][COLOR=#05408F ! important][/COLOR][/COLOR] has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.........
Not Start Up, “Launch Startup Repair”
Jul 11, 2009I shut my computer off last night as I normally do before I went to bed. It shut down without any issues. Everything was the same as it normally is. When I went to turn on my computer today, it goes through the Dell startup screen, then it tells me there might be a problem with some hardware or something to that effect and gives me the option to either “Launch Startup Repair” or “Start Window Normally”, then windows attempts to start (has the green scrolling bar at the bottom). Either of these options take me to the same place next which is a screen that states “System Recovery Options”, and asks me to select my keyboard language. So I did and hit “next” to continue to a screen that asks me to sign into my account on the computer, and then it took me to another page that displayed a box of system recovery tools.
Being a little confused about what was happening, I selected the option for “Startup Repair”. When it finished I chose to restart the computer as it noted that if the problem was fixed it would start normally. It didn’t start normally and I went through the same process again when it rebooted. I have tried this option many times today, and it isn’t working. I also have tried a few times the option for “Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool”. It goes trough the tests, says nothing about finding a problem, then the computer restarts to the same situation............
Start-Up Repair Not Work, No Boot
Jul 29, 2009I have an Acer Extensa laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium installed. Its been working great for over a year now untill yesterday when all of a sudden it wouldn't boot up properly. It continued to go to start-up repair, but that kept on failing. After trying all other tools, (system restore had no restore points for some odd reason)... I tried safe mode. That did not work. It instead went back to the start-up repair screen. The same warning message popped up everytime it failed "Cannot repair automatically, click finish blah blah blah". When I bought this laptop from Best Buy, I did not recieve any type of Disk for Vista, it was already loaded on there... I would rather not do a clean install.

May 15, 2010A while ago on my desktop Vista I was installing some updates. After I restarted the computer, it went straight to startup repair. I used system restore to restore to a point before I installed the updates. My computer worked fine. Thinking it hadn't been the updates that had caused the problem, I updated again but with the same results. This has also happned on other computers of mine. Ever since then, I have never installed a single update. I am wondering if this is a good idea or not.

Yesterday the screen became stuck and unresponsive, I switched the computer off then on and after the normal repair / assessment of disk errors etc tried to log-on, the screen got to welcome with active cursor but got no further. I entered safe start-up to try to restore system to a point in time, but the Help system instructions to manually set up the restore point didn't correlate to any of the available options on the system, I'm not sure if an Windows automatic update has caused this.

It won't start in safe mode & system restore (6 points) has not enough free space to restore the disk (I was backing up files into a folder to copy to an external drive filling the drive when it crashed - doh) & it says the Recovery X the disk is not in the selected restore point. Is there a way of copying files to enable the system resore to work or some other things to try.

Aug 6, 2009I have a 120GB Sata drive and I am stuck in a loop. The loop is "launch repair, or start windows normally" I have tried both. I have also did F8 and did safe mode, etc. However I want to just clean it off & start over. I put the cd in, it boots then it does "Copy setup files" The bar finishes, it goes to another screen, and it just sits there, with the mouse....just sits there for hours. I am willing to buy another HD just didn't want to if it's not that.

Readable/writable file not re writable. And then does nothing after this. If this information is not enough I will re do the scan and take down everything displayed. But what can be the problem? I download nothing and scan it daily. I have touched no system files and have only had a small handful of crashes. Is this proble something somebody knows how to solve. This laptop was bought for me and I cannot afford to have it repaired.

Sep 28, 2009last night i nearly cracked it with my computer because i did a CHKDSK and when that finishes and my computer restarts... when it just about to load the logon screen it is dark for at least up to a minute. the last time i did that i wouldn't boot into windows at all. and had to pay 60.00 for it to get looked at.

May 2, 2009My Vista desktop took forever to shut down last night and today it will not start at all. The hard drive spins briefly and then gives up. I have a recovery disk the CD drive lights but it will not start from there. I would like to get it up briefly to be sure I have no new photos to back up. I have Wubi Ubuntu installed and if I could get the thing started at all, I would be able to use it to make sure I can recover anything that I desperately need. I tried to start it with PC Linux OS which is capable of running from the CD drive, but no joy there either. I would love to give you more specifics but I can't since I can't view the info, I can't. It is an E-machine, one of their T series with 180 gig hard drive. It's got lots of RAM. I was running Vista but it was an upgrade from XP.

Sep 6, 2008I just bought and installed Vista Home Premium x64, I've been running it for a few days now and I quite like it. I've had no issues with hardware and drivers. Although, two things that don't sit well with me are the start menu and the disk defragger. The start menu, in particular games, is messy and inconsistant. Games are placed in the games folder/menu and that would be fine if it did it for all games but it only puts some games there. Secondly, if a game is in the games folder, it never appears in the recently used list in the start menu. This I don't like at all. It means that the recently used list pretty much all windows programs that I rarely use. Some games are in the games folder only, some are in the games folder and the all programs list and some are in the all programs list and recently used list but not in the games folder...? Also if you delete a desktop shortcut the icon in the recently used list doesn't work as it is pointing at the desktop shortcut that is not longer there instead of the actual executable.
I feel that the start menu in Vista has been ruined in an attempt to make it more sophisticated than that of Xp. In general though, Vista IS more sophisticated and does make using windows better and easier but being that the start menu is such an integral part of day to day use, it's really something that shouldn't have failed. The defragger: i'm trying to understand how this thing works if it works at all. Very confusing! If you manually start it, the defrag process never ends and yet if you kill it after hours and hours then run a 3rd party defragger it will say that the drive is still fragmented. If it's a low level background process why doesn't it just run all the time with no gui? Anyway, apart from thsoe two mind boggling things, I really like Vista - It looks cool.

Diagnose And Repair Network Can't Repair
Mar 23, 2008each time I boot my Vista PC the system is very slow to establish a connection to the network. How do I go about troubleshooting this problem? I have a SOHO network config. One Vista PC, one W2K3 server on the network. Verizon supplied FIOS router gets me on the internet. The network runs great once it is connected. When I click diagnose and repair on the network icon the result is a "cant repair the problem" answer.

Mar 29, 2009I turn on my computer and it tells me that my c drive is corrupt and to run chkdsk.
I go into command prompt (right clicking on it to run it as an admin) and run the command sfc /scannow.
It says that it's starting the system scan and that it will take some time, but as it's getting it's "Verification" it stops at 9 percent complete and says that "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."
I've also tried going in through computer>right click>properties>tools>error-checking>check now and then clicking both check-boxes >start>schedule disk check and then I've tried restarting, but nothing happened.
C:toskrnl.exe IS CORRUPT
Sep 30, 2008I have a problem with my PC with windows updates. When I turn the computer on in the morning it starts installing new updates. this takes about 35 minutes on stage 1 of 3 then it shuts down. When it restarts again I get a tech guys message to say "Your computer was unable to start. Running start-up repair"
At the end of this when I look at the diagnosis it says:
Boot critical file C:
toskrnl.exe is corrupt
Repair Action: File repair
Result! failed error code OxA
Time taken = 4462ms
Repair action: System restore
Result: Completed successfully
Error code = OXO.
This is now happening every time I restart my computer and it takes about an hour. Windows then starts OK until the next time
Do I need to reinstall windows Vista Home Premium??? It was already installed on the PC when I bought it and they did not give me a CD.
