I turn on my computer and it tells me that my c drive is corrupt and to run chkdsk.
I go into command prompt (right clicking on it to run it as an admin) and run the command sfc /scannow.
It says that it's starting the system scan and that it will take some time, but as it's getting it's "Verification" it stops at 9 percent complete and says that "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."
I've also tried going in through computer>right click>properties>tools>error-checking>check now and then clicking both check-boxes >start>schedule disk check and then I've tried restarting, but nothing happened.
The Event Viewer of my friend's computer shows a lot of errors saying that his hard drive is corrupt and unusable. On every re-boot the Disk Checker starts up and does its thing only to report there are no problems.
Could there be some other hardware problem that would cause Vista to report these type of errors? My friend did take his machine into the shop to be checked out be a Certified Technician and they told him that everything was OK. At least they did not charge him for the service.
I am a bit concerned that he had a lot of programs operating in the background which caused a lot of memory swapping as he has only 1GB of memory. What is the minimum amount of recommended memory for Vista now? I think it used to be 1.5GB, has that changed?
I ran a sfcscan and... It seems I have some corrupt files. This laptop doesn't have a recovery/reformat drive or i'd just reformat the laptop. Moreover, I don't have a recovery disc for vista, just Win-7. Perhaps anyone can pinpoint me in the right direction? I have the CBS file... However it's close to 24MBs...
I have a problem with my PC with windows updates. When I turn the computer on in the morning it starts installing new updates. this takes about 35 minutes on stage 1 of 3 then it shuts down. When it restarts again I get a tech guys message to say "Your computer was unable to start. Running start-up repair" At the end of this when I look at the diagnosis it says: Boot critical file C: toskrnl.exe is corrupt Repair Action: File repair Result! failed error code OxA Time taken = 4462ms Repair action: System restore Result: Completed successfully Error code = OXO. This is now happening every time I restart my computer and it takes about an hour. Windows then starts OK until the next time Do I need to reinstall windows Vista Home Premium??? It was already installed on the PC when I bought it and they did not give me a CD.
I downloaded the lastest updates for Vista, upon reboot, got the following error Boot Critical file: C......Tcpip.sys is corrupt. Will not boot at all, even in safe mode. Inserted my DVD and attempted a "repair", it failed on TCPIP.sys and said there it was not able to complete the repair.
just re-booted my pc got error pfn list corrupt am i right in thinking this is ram or hard drive related i did run memtest for 16 hours then stopped it thought it was playing up thats why it was running so long or does it run that long i have 2 gig of ram vista intel quad core 6600 2.40 ghz. 64 bit operating system memtest did show some error but how reliable is it.
I have a flashing power LED on my WRT54GP2 I have read in to this and it tells me that this is due to the firmware is corrupt but how do I refresh the firmware(I am finding it hard to find any WRT54GP2 firmware on the linksys website)?? This is not a ISP WRT54GP2, I brought it myself. [EDIT] so I have found some firmware but now Im struggling to get to the setup screen. I put in 192.168.15.1 which is the webbased setup no joy is there anyother way of getting the firmware on there?
I've been having some trouble with my installation of Vista today. It had been running without a hitch for nearly a year. I think the problem started since Windows was taking a long time to shut down, I assumed (wrongly perhaps) that it had frozen, and so I forced it to shutdown by holding the power button for 5 seconds. Another possible cause could be I plugged in a USB joystick (driver conflict?).
When I started my PC back up I noticed things seemed to be running very slowly at times, as if the system was having trouble accessing some files. I scheduled a Disk Check and restarted. It found and fixed some errors, brought me into my desktop, and then a pop up kept appearing in the bottom right tool bar saying '*.exe could not be accessed' and something about a folder named '$Secure'. My browser bookmarks wouldn't load, for example. I restarted again and this time during startup the green loading bar would run its course, and then a black screen and a cursor appeared, rather than the Vista logon screen. I booted off my Vista DVD and ran Startup Repair. It found and fixed some errors but I still have the black screen problem. I also ran another Disk Check, as well as some HDD diagnostic software - it said everything was fine. When I try running Startup Repair again, it tells me it doesn't see any errors and to remove any recently added hardware (I have). I'm stuck at this point. I would like to repair (upgrade) my installation of Vista, but I need to be able to get into a working install in the first place to do that.
I recently partitioned my 500 GB hard disk on my Vista computer into multiple drives in order to keep data files and picture files separate. In doing that I succeeded in
screwing up the folder line-up in my user folder. In spite of many tries I haven't been able to "unscrew" it. There are two main problems:
1. There are now two folders called Pictures (E referring to ther new partition
Both of these folders contain the same subfolders and files. No matter what I try, I cannot delete one of these listings.
2. There is an additional folder called Pictures.
However this folder contains all the music folders and files. When I try to rename this folder to Music, I get the error message:"This action can't be completed because the
folder is open in another program", even though no other programs are running.
My Vista Premium will not run autochk.exe. I ran sfc/ scannow and the cbs log file found autochk.exe corrupt. I tried to copy autochk.exe from another Vista PC to the c:windowssystem 32 folder and it will not let me. I'm running as administrator and click continue when user account control pops up, but it won't copy.
Something has been bothering me a lot in Vista 64 Ultimate SP1. Every now and then, when Windows starts, it says my disk structure is corrupt and I should run chkdsk in order to fix it. When I try to run CHKDSK under Vista, I get a "insufficient disk space to fix master table (MFT)", and CHKDSK aborts. I can't create folders, files, Windows Update fails ...
The good thing is a have a dual boot system and when I choose XP, Windows XP detects that the Vista partition needs chkdsk and this time, chkdsk runs completely and fixes the Vista partition. So I can restart the computer, choose Vista partition again and this time everything will work fine.
Problem is, this is happening too often. Like every day. And it is such a hassle to start Vista, get the error message, restart, choose XP, fix Vista, restart, choose Vista and then have everything normal. Any of you guys have an idea on WHY my disk structure is getting corrupt all the time? My Vista installation is very recent, and I did a full format in the partition before installing it.
LOng story short, I had to restore last night due to what seemed like a video driver problem. I restored, back a couple weeks and it fixed my video issue. It then did the automatic windows updates, including SP1, which I thought was odd, but I went with it. After the download & update the system rebooted...and then it all went downhill. I actually got another error message which I can't recall at the moment, but it was a black screen not a blue.... I then broke out my original windows recovery discs, rebooted and it went directly to the recovery options and screens as I was expecting. The first disc ran fine, backing up files, blah blah.....it said to reboot...and then THIS stuff started.......
I just tried three times to download the Windows 7 .ISO beta through the Download Manager. I only succeeded once and when I finally got it down it seemed there was a corrupt image. Does anybody have a clean link to the image? I'm anxious to try it out in my VirtualBox.
Vista SP1, 500GB disk, 3 partitions: system, data & other Used Paragon Parition Manager 8.5 to resize partitions (shrink system, expand data), rebooted and now can't boot. In System Recovery options get "Operating System: Unknown on (Unknown) Local disk". Open a command prompt and can only see the data partition. If I run Startup Repair, I get the following output:
Problem Event Name:StartupRepairV2 Problem Signature 01:System Disk Problem Signature 02:6.0.6000.16386.0.0.0.0 Problem Signature 03:1 Problem Signature 04:65537 Problem Signature 05:unknown Problem Signature 06:CorruptBootSector Problem Signature 07:0 Problem Signature 08:1 Problem Signature 09:FixBootSector Problem Signature 10:1168 OS Version:6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1 Locale ID:1033
Looking at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392/en-us, if I try 'bootrec /scanos' I get 'Total Identified Windows Installations: 0'. Should I try the /FixMBR or /Fixboot options? If not, what else can I try?
When Vista Home Premium 64 bit boots, an error pops up from the system tray saying that C:Users(username)AppdataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsCookies is corrupt, and suggests to run chkdsk (which did not help). I've tried renaming the folder to see if Vista would recreate a new one, but the same error appears, with the new folder name. I tried to delete the folder, would not delete, gave no reason why. I tried booting into the hidden admin account to delete it, still would not delete. If I try to open the folder, it says the folder is corrupt, it cannot be opened.
computer 'cannot load the hive (file systemrootsystem32configSOFTWARE...' and has been unable to repair itself. I have tried system restore and I cannot remember the exact message but basically there appear to be no restore points to go back to. Can I edit or repair or restore the registry using the command prompt?
My Laptop was taking about 8-9 mins on average to boot. But Runs Great once running. also shut down was 4-5 mins. I tried Defrag, CCleaner Defrag Registry, Registry Cleanup, enable both cpu's at start up,ran Avanquest's System Suite Utilities, Chkdsk/f /r,also sfc /scannow.so reading on some forums, a lot of advice was to update all drivers. So I got Driver Genius Pro 9 by avanquest (Driversoft company when installed)this program found 22 drivers out of date. so I created a restore Point and did a full registry export(backup).next, I let all the drivers completely download, then First, I installed Intel turbo memory drivers, everything was functioning well, so I proceeded to install Intel chipset device software.
3rd was the Nvidia Display Drivers so I made a second Restore point (I had issues in the past with display drivers) So I installed the Nvidia drivers and on reboot I input my password and it says The User Profile Service service failed the logon. User Profile cannot be loaded. I tried to run Restore but it says Disk OS(C) has errors(Windows detected file system corruption on OS(C). you must check the disk for errors before it can be restored. checking disk OS (C) - Some Problems were found and fixed. But at reboot - same issue. so I went to vista forums."Brink" had some great advice I used that I found in a thread, to turn on the "Real" administrator account in safe mode to gain access and I uninstalled the Nvidia drivers under the admin acct. at reboot states corrupt system files (CheckDisk) But when I tried to run driver Genius in admin again to reverse the intel drivers (this shows up as Intel Matrix Storage Manager in Start>Programs) the PC crashed.
I ran CHKDSK /f .NOW I can boot into my acct. but there is NO sound device found, sidebar gadget shows no battery,or battery activity. Also bluetooth Hardware not functioning. The Drivers for bluetooth and sound show "Functioning" in device manager. Someone HELP Please as I spent many many months customizing and lots of money on software that will be lost. It seems to be fixable but HOW?
After two days of trying to recover my vista installation I've got a new version of vista and it it's still telling me i've got missing or corrupt files. Where can get the correct files/ a good recovery disk/ a bootable virus cd (tried bit defender - didn't work). I've read soooo many pages about this and nothing works. Startup repair - doesn't work; complete system recovery - doesn't work; formatting during the vista installation - doesn't work.
Recently I have had three files turn sour on me for no visible reason (corrupt). One of them is a very imporant bit of course work. Im running office 2007 and 32bit vista home. I have been storing the files on a USB stick I thing there may be someing wrong with the usb stick I have now changed it but this dose not solve my problem of the lost files.
I have tried downloading various recovery programs none of which have worked. I have also downloaded open office and that will not open the files either. I don't know where to go from here. If someone can send me back the "energy survey" in working order im willing to send them £5 via PayPal. Only 2 the first person.
when I powered up my Vista I noticed that it was unusually slow and all of a sudden, it froze for no apparent reason. I rebooted [by pressing reset on case as keyboard wouldn't respond] and booted into XP and ran chkdsk on the Vista partition. Sure enough, it found two errors but in the index area. Here's the output of DOS window:
Code: C:>chkdsk /r d: The type of the file system is NTFS. Volume label is NEW_C. CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 5)... File verification completed. CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 5)... Deleting index entry SBEServer.exe in index $I30 of file 1153. Deleting index entry SonicMCEBurnEngineIcon.png in index $I30 of file 1153. I run on Windows Vista Business x64 SP1. I was updating a while back, and an update failed with an error code. So I followed the error code in Windows Help and Support, and it asked me to delete all the updates in my update folder and then try updating again. I did that, and now update gives me the 80070424 code, which is access denied.
So, here are the solutions I tried: sfc /scannow (cmd prompt was in admin) It does find corrupt files, except it can't start Windows Repair Service to repair it. So I tried going into Services.msc to turn Windows Modules Installer to Manual. However, since I technically "never updated", that is not in Services..................
I've lost the sound on my laptop and I don't know how to get it back. I have an HP Compaq nx9430 with 2 Gigs of RAM. Everything was going great after a clean install of Vista when all of the sudden (I don't know what happened or updated) the sound stopped working. Now, the strange thing about the sound is that I can uninstall everything, get rid of the dlls and .sys files for the drivers. Do a clean install of the sound drivers from HP's website and I can press my mute button to get the icon in the systray to go to mute and back. There are even little "sound waves" coming from the speaker in the systray. However, when I open Mixer, I can see "Speakers" but in the "Applications" groupbox, Windows Sounds and none of my applications come up. Applications is empty - yes, totally missing Has anyone ever run across this before? If so, what did you do to fix it? I'm at my wits end as I can't listen to music on my laptop while I'm at a coffee shop coding anymore!!
Whenever I open up the Task Scheduler, I get the following pop up windows, then, after clicking on the OK button, followed by,Everything seems to work OK and programmed things happen when they should as far as I can tell. I don't use Windows Media Centre very much as I do not have a TV tuner installed but otherwise it seems to work. No idea what the "Reminders - David" are - must be something I tried a while ago. I have a Dell desktop with OEM Vista Home Premium....
I really need some ideas to fix my computer. When i turn computer on i get windows failed to load because the kernel is missing or corrupt, so ive put in my restore discs, and no luck there also. Been working on it for 5 days now and no luck. will not load in any of the safemodes.
when i run registry cleaner in vista manager Microsoft .NET Framework Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. attempted t read or write protected memory. this is often an indication that other memery is corrupt. for detailed it show long list of description. See the end of this message for details on invoking just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box. System.AccessViolationException: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.
I recently had graphics card problems and had to get my 8800GTS replaced. This took several weeks and now I'm running a 8800GT perfectly fine. However, I've noticed my Power Options seem to be corrupt. Upon going into Power Options in the Control Panel, it says "Your power plan information isn't available." I cannot understand why this has happened. I haven't touched any settings or anything to do with that. I have tried System Restore to an earlier point (before I got my new graphics card) and it didn't seem to help. The help on the page says that registry keys may have become corrupt or been deleted. I'm not sure if this is the problem, but if it is how can I fix it? System Restore didn't help.
I would like to avoid doing a Repair with the Windows disc. I'm hoping there's an easier way to fix this problem. There has to be! I've been looking on Google and there is hardly anything on this problem. The very few people who do have it cannot seem to fix it, or used previous registry backups (which hasn't worked for me). There doesn't seem to be any resolutions from Microsoft at all. I also tried using the "powercfg" commands in the command prompt, but didn't seem to have any luck there either. I cannot Hibernate or Sleep at the moment and it's a real inconvenience. I'd really like my Power Options back!
I'm running Vista on a Sony Vaio purchased new in 9/08. I have never had any problems until this morning. My husband used my pc this morning to go to Tax Brain, and on his log on there was a Adobe Update ready to download. When I went to log him off, I decided to download the update; then the update stopped saying that there was a corrupt file on it. So I logged off his side and signed into mine (btw, he has NO adminitrative rights), I then tried to open my Windows Live Mail...it then prompted me for a password, which it NEVER does because it's already saved. Then another alert came up that a file in live mail was corrupt; I freaked out and tried to access Norton (which is up to date) and it wouldn't let me. Next thing I know a blue screen comes up and says that windows is to be shut down to prevent damage; it suggested I restart the computer and try to open in safe mode and determine what files may be at fault. {Incidentally, yesterday Norton detected "Backdoor.Trojan" or something of that nature; I looked up the detail report and it said that it was blocked and fully removed from my system, and I was ablel to use the pc until 9pm with no problem - after booting up this morning is when the trouble began.} Ok, so I tried rebooting in each and every mode available on that inital error screen. The rebooting goes down all the drivers until it gets to crcdisk.sys...then it quits and gives me that damn blue screen again that advises me to try rebooting in safe mode. I cannot reboot at all.
Now, I have downloaded an iso file of Vista recovery to my thumb drive using the tutorial on this site; and I have plugged it into the pc upon startup...with same result as before. Nothing. I am not able to burn a DVD because the old laptop I'm on right now only has a CD-R and a DVD-Rom. I don't have any blank CD's here and my husband is at work; we're pressed for cash also...so I'm pretty screwed all the way around. To make matters worse, I have an assignment and my finals (I'm finishing school at 31) due today, tomorrow and this weekend. I don't have a vista recovery cd, none was provided when i bought my pc. And now i have absolutely no idea what to do.
I'm using Vista home premium 32 bit, and it automatically installed an update from microsoft. It then asked me to restart the computer, which I did, but when I did, it wouldn't load again because it said that "winload.exe was missing or corrupt". It then asked me to use the installation cd to restore it, but Vista came preinstalled, so I don't have the CD. How can I fix this? I can't even load to safe mode to restore to a restore point....
