Windows Cannot Repair Itself "file System32/drivers/kkmbyd.sys Is Corrupt"
Mar 22, 2010
my friends laptop froze, he waited a bit to see if it would come back but it didnt. so he rebooted it...but it didnt come back on...we tried again and eventually it started but he cant access windows because it says that there is something wrong and that windows cannot repair it...
He isnt amazing with pc's so he gave it to me so I could have a go at gettin it back on track... so far nothin has changed same screen comes up sayin that windows cannot repair itself... says something about the file system32/drivers/kkmbyd.sys is corrupt. I tried to restore to an earlier point in time but it wont work cause it says that there are no earlier versions saved. They only idea that came into my head was to fully restore windows, but his hardrive has a lot of valuable data and im worried it will be lost

After I modified HOSTS file in another directory I can not replace the one on windows/system32/drivers/etc. He account I use is administrator. I have windows vista home premiun SP1. By the way a virus altered HOSTS file and can not connect to internet with firefox, I added 127.0.0.1 to the file in order to make it work.

when i turn on my computer, an error message comes saying "Windows failed to load because a file is missing or corrupt File: Netio.sys Status: 0xc0000221" This started when i was clearing my computer of useless programs, and after i deleted Realtime player or Quicktime player, (can't remember which) an error message jumped from the taskbar saying something about Network device driver. After that every time i start the computer, the "Windows failed to load" message pops up. The first half a year, it was solved by pressing enter, to "Choose an operating system to start: Windows Vista" and then to "Windows error recovery (start windows normally, safe mode etc)" and back to "Windows failed to start", repeating it 3-20 times. Then i had a familiar "Unexpected shutdown" during a game, and now, the "Enter spamming technique" doesn't work anymore. All i can access at the moment is Windows memory diagnostic tool, and Bios setup utility. Is there any way to fix this through the setup utility or some other manner?

computer 'cannot load the hive (file systemrootsystem32configSOFTWARE...' and has been unable to repair itself. I have tried system restore and I cannot remember the exact message but basically there appear to be no restore points to go back to. Can I edit or repair or restore the registry using the command prompt?

I'm having a problem getting a screensaver I made to run from the system32 folder. The screensaver is a .scr file, and it runs perfectly fine from any other folder when I double click it and what not. However, when I move it to my system32 folder and double click it, it just brings up a black screen.
The reason I have to have it in that folder is because I'm trying to use a sidebar gadget to display this screensaver on my desktop, and the gadget only accepts screensavers from the system32 folder.

It looks like my Media PC restarted while Media Centre was still running and somehow it has corrupted a couple of DLL files.
OLEACC.DLL
WINTRUST.DLL
I have tried running System File Checker, while confirmed that some files were corrupted, but it couldn't fix them. Eventually I worked out how to change the permissions on those files so that I can manually replace them, but can't find a fresh file to replace them with, either on the Vista DVD or on the Net.

OS is Vista Enterprise
The problem happens with several applications, mostly with word 2007. every log says the fault is ntdll.dll
The file is present in C:windowssystem32
Any effort to change the fila with a new one tells me I have no rights (with both local admin account and enterprise domain admin account).
Trying to register ntdll.dll results with error message that dll or ocx file is missing or corrupt.
sfc /scannow in cmd gives no files with errors.

I'm running Vista on a Sony Vaio purchased new in 9/08. I have never had any problems until this morning. My husband used my pc this morning to go to Tax Brain, and on his log on there was a Adobe Update ready to download. When I went to log him off, I decided to download the update; then the update stopped saying that there was a corrupt file on it. So I logged off his side and signed into mine (btw, he has NO adminitrative rights), I then tried to open my Windows Live Mail...it then prompted me for a password, which it NEVER does because it's already saved. Then another alert came up that a file in live mail was corrupt; I freaked out and tried to access Norton (which is up to date) and it wouldn't let me. Next thing I know a blue screen comes up and says that windows is to be shut down to prevent damage; it suggested I restart the computer and try to open in safe mode and determine what files may be at fault. {Incidentally, yesterday Norton detected "Backdoor.Trojan" or something of that nature; I looked up the detail report and it said that it was blocked and fully removed from my system, and I was ablel to use the pc until 9pm with no problem - after booting up this morning is when the trouble began.} Ok, so I tried rebooting in each and every mode available on that inital error screen. The rebooting goes down all the drivers until it gets to crcdisk.sys...then it quits and gives me that damn blue screen again that advises me to try rebooting in safe mode. I cannot reboot at all.
Now, I have downloaded an iso file of Vista recovery to my thumb drive using the tutorial on this site; and I have plugged it into the pc upon startup...with same result as before. Nothing. I am not able to burn a DVD because the old laptop I'm on right now only has a CD-R and a DVD-Rom. I don't have any blank CD's here and my husband is at work; we're pressed for cash also...so I'm pretty screwed all the way around. To make matters worse, I have an assignment and my finals (I'm finishing school at 31) due today, tomorrow and this weekend. I don't have a vista recovery cd, none was provided when i bought my pc. And now i have absolutely no idea what to do.

when I try and log into my laptop, at the first screen where you see your user name and then you are asked to type your password, I type my password and get the following message: The file or directoryWindowsAppPatch is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility.
From looking at other threads they say go into the start menu etc... however I cant even get that far. The message for me appears at the initial startup screen when I select my user name and where i type in my password. I dont have a disc for Vista so i can't reinstall it.

I have Windows Vista on a laptop and Windows XP on my desk. Both systems have been used for a Word document I've been working on.This Word document has a contents table and one other freestanding table. One of them has become corrupt -- I do not know which one. I see a discussion string about this, but the solution proposed there does not work for me. When I open the document, I get the error message about the corrupt file, but the cursor doesn't work, page down doesn't work, the down arrow doesn't work, the links above doesn't work. The moment I click on the document to get a cursor, Word no longer responds (I get the not responding message up top), and then it just sits there. If I click again anywhere, the document goes gray, and all I can do is close it.

I ran a sfcscan and... It seems I have some corrupt files. This laptop doesn't have a recovery/reformat drive or i'd just reformat the laptop. Moreover, I don't have a recovery disc for vista, just Win-7. Perhaps anyone can pinpoint me in the right direction? I have the CBS file... However it's close to 24MBs...

My Laptop is a Toshiba P200 satelite it came with a OEM Recory DVD is one of those DVD that you supose to run automatic and it then Wipe out everything and clean install it acording to Toshiba thats the best way of doing it.
But what if i just want to repair some System file I have a Corrupt Msdos when i acess it by running "Command" in start/run and Msdos open I can only navigate the drives by typing Cd c:/ cd... etc. But as soon i try to run something else lets say Type DIR in C:/ it Freezes as soon i press Enter (i see a cursor blinking up and down and dont let me do anything)
I am sure some Msdos files must be corrupted or missing and the solution is to restore those files repair vista. Do i realy have to Clean install Vista everytime because Toshiba havent included any repair disc only a Full clean installation DVD?......

SFc scannow is reporting that the system cannot repair some corrupt files. From reading the CBS log I found this entry:

How do I get a file not repaired by System File Checker from a Vista DVD and put it back on the Vista tree? Cannot find the file on the DVD. I had rare problem with Vista (clean installed 3 months ago, after 28 months of the original installation working). My hard drive is probably nearing life end, but there are only a few bad sectors (and only because HP Pavilion notebooks are NOTORIOUS for overheating and reducing drive life).
System Restore did not work: it stopped for hours at the "initializing" phase at EVERY restore point, and this was in safe mode. Besides, I think system restore only puts back the registry at a set time point, and does nothing to fix damaged system files..............

ever since planning on a new pc build i knew at some point that id want to install vista on it. Ive planned to get vista 64 seeing as i have a machine capable of running a 64 bit o/s with ease (when i buy my extra 2gb of ram along with my copy of vista) I have been doing my research on which of my games ill still be able to play & tbh the only ones that im remotely worried about are older than red orchestra so no problems there.
My only real concern is the drivers for my belkin wireless card (f5d7001uk) which doesnt have any vista 32 drivers! But ive heard a rumour that vista automatically installs the drivers itself?? Im also worried that some of the useful little apps i have installed wont install such as winrar, wavepad, deepburner pro 1.8 & punkbuster

While being satisfied by the cool effects and new interface of Windows Vista Codename Longhorn, many of us testers are what you would call "gamers." The lot of us would like to know if gaming on the default Vista Supplemental drivers would mean loss of graphics quality compared to using up to date drivers on a XP OS. For example, I installed Vista and then installed my trusty game, Battlefield 2. I tried using the new nvidia Vista drivers but the game kept crashing when I start it up. So I reinstalled the Vista Supplemental drivers and it happened to work. Quite interesting. I am able to run the game on default vista drivers and not the nvidia vista drivers. Coming to conclusion, would using the vista drivers result in loss of quality and graphics compared to using up to date drivers on a XP system? Or you can also rephrase it; Would gaming be better on the Vista Beta or XP? Does anyone know if SLI works on Vista?

I have been using Vista Ultimate x64 for the last 5 months and have to say it's been a massive learing curve due to its fragility - 4 full rebuilds in the last 4 months - and not much fun when using SATA RAID. Anyway, got up yesterday morning, turned on the computer and it had managed to corrupt itself yet again: Windows Defender, Windows Picture Viewer and a host of desktop icons refused to find their pathways home and so decided against a full rebuild and started the repair option with a boot to the DVD. I set this off running and went to work at 12:30pm...
I came back 5 hours later and still had the dialog box " Finalising Registry" running on my screen! Well, a quick restart and i tried the upgrade option once back in Vista from the DVD. This then took and unbelievable 7 hours to complete and was finally ready - after updates - at 01:20am this morning, but a full clean install would have taken about 1-2 hours to finish, so i'll be doing that in future!.........
