			Feb 19, 2010
After I modified HOSTS file in another directory I can not replace the one on windows/system32/drivers/etc. He account I use is administrator. I have windows vista home premiun SP1. By the way a virus altered HOSTS file and can not connect to internet with firefox, I added 127.0.0.1 to the file in order to make it work.

my friends laptop froze, he waited a bit to see if it would come back but it didnt. so he rebooted it...but it didnt come back on...we tried again and eventually it started but he cant access windows because it says that there is something wrong and that windows cannot repair it...

He isnt amazing with pc's so he gave it to me so I could have a go at gettin it back on track... so far nothin has changed same screen comes up sayin that windows cannot repair itself... says something about the file system32/drivers/kkmbyd.sys is corrupt. I tried to restore to an earlier point in time but it wont work cause it says that there are no earlier versions saved. They only idea that came into my head was to fully restore windows, but his hardrive has a lot of valuable data and im worried it will be lost

I have a corrupted System32 file on windows Vista. I tried to boot from the windows 7 disk and also from the windows XP disk to do a clean install. This doesn't work however, I set the boot in BIOS to cddrive so I don't see the problem. does someone know how I can instal windows 7 or windows XP on my corrupted Vista?

I am trying to change my hosts file so I don't allow access to a particular site. In the process I accidentally changed the extension of the orignal HOSTS file, it is now a .org file and I cannot find a way to get rid of the extension. There are no previous versions to restore to, and renaming no longer changes the file type. How can I either create a new HOSTS file, or restore the orginal one?

I have altered my hosts file on both an XP and Vista computer. The XP computer correctly blocks the unwanted websites ("Page cannot be displayed") but the same exact hosts file on the vista computer shows the sites.

I am looking for path of hosts file in vista x64. I found solution to get for 32bit apps to see the 64-bit tree, search now find hosts file and i see it and can edit it. But before these solution i was unable to find hosts file.

Monochrome Blog - Updating your hosts file in Vista 64-bit Where is this file hidden and how to find it. If i run Notepad as administrator and try to browse that cwindowssysnative directory i found noting. But TotalCommander find it and i can edit it and add that what i need. It just was weird.

I really need to change a system file called 'hosts'. I've changed it many times before, but today I'm not allowed. I access the file, make a very small change, then try to save it just by leaving the path as is. Then I get a message that says "Cannot save file, check path.." But I haven't changed the path.

I'm having a problem getting a screensaver I made to run from the system32 folder. The screensaver is a .scr file, and it runs perfectly fine from any other folder when I double click it and what not. However, when I move it to my system32 folder and double click it, it just brings up a black screen.
The reason I have to have it in that folder is because I'm trying to use a sidebar gadget to display this screensaver on my desktop, and the gadget only accepts screensavers from the system32 folder.

It looks like my Media PC restarted while Media Centre was still running and somehow it has corrupted a couple of DLL files.

OLEACC.DLL
WINTRUST.DLL

I have tried running System File Checker, while confirmed that some files were corrupted, but it couldn't fix them. Eventually I worked out how to change the permissions on those files so that I can manually replace them, but can't find a fresh file to replace them with, either on the Vista DVD or on the Net.

Now, my computer can't open like half of the stuff it needs to and now half the icons for like folders and stuff are retarted. I can't even open the Control Panel.

In many of the tweaks on this site I have directed you to delete or replace a system file. In Windows Vista this is not always as easy as it sounds since the system files are protected better by the file system than in XP. There are two steps that you need to do in order to be able to replace or delete a system file:First you need to take ownership of the file. Run takeown /f  "path and file name" to take ownership from a command prompt.Next, you need to give your account full control permissions on the file. Run cacls "path and file name" /G <your username>:F to get full control from a command prompt....

My computer is running the concistency check. It's at stage 3 and when it's almost complete it's starts to "replace invalid security Id with default security id for file ******" it's been doing this for a while now and I was wondering what I can do to speed it up. It's currently at 170000, and if I try to restart the computer the login screen will not load if I skip the disk check.

I ran Spybot S&D, got rid of any viruses it got and Mallware Bytes, again, removed everything. Even ran McAfee and got rid of whatever. But each time i run the scan on Spybot S&D it finds site that redirect me. I press fix selected items but it responds by saying "cannot access hosts file. Access is denied" I tried to untick the "protect hosts file form hijackers" in IE tweaks but keeps getting checked. On top of that the Hosts file is missing.

ever since planning on a new pc build i knew at some point that id want to install vista on it. Ive planned to get vista 64 seeing as i have a machine capable of running a 64 bit o/s with ease (when i buy my extra 2gb of ram along with my copy of vista) I have been doing my research on which of my games ill still be able to play & tbh the only ones that im remotely worried about are older than red orchestra so no problems there.
My only real concern is the drivers for my belkin wireless card (f5d7001uk) which doesnt have any vista 32 drivers! But ive heard a rumour that vista automatically installs the drivers itself?? Im also worried that some of the useful little apps i have installed wont install such as winrar, wavepad, deepburner pro 1.8 & punkbuster

While being satisfied by the cool effects and new interface of Windows Vista Codename Longhorn, many of us testers are what you would call "gamers." The lot of us would like to know if gaming on the default Vista Supplemental drivers would mean loss of graphics quality compared to using up to date drivers on a XP OS. For example, I installed Vista and then installed my trusty game, Battlefield 2. I tried using the new nvidia Vista drivers but the game kept crashing when I start it up. So I reinstalled the Vista Supplemental drivers and it happened to work. Quite interesting. I am able to run the game on default vista drivers and not the nvidia vista drivers. Coming to conclusion, would using the vista drivers result in loss of quality and graphics compared to using up to date drivers on a XP system?  Or you can also rephrase it; Would gaming be better on the Vista Beta or XP? Does anyone know if SLI works on Vista?

This evening after an unexpected shut-down of Windows, I got a prompt to check out Problem Reports and Solutions. This is what I found in that log; Problems with Wdi Service Host - 48 similar Events are reported since 07 Feb 09. Problems with Wdi System Host - 35 similar Events are reported since 07 Feb 09. And do the two following snips have any relevance to the two above?

I'm using Windows Vista. Whenever I create a new folder, It has "tabs", like "Name Date Modified Type Size", which are not spread out to the length of my window by default; I need to do it myself each time. I was wondering if I could set the length of each "tab", to be created automatically. I hope I'm getting my point across fine. How can I look at the top level folder date modified, I can tell any item inside all the sub-folder was updated or created? So the top level folder 'date modified' is the latest date. Current, in Windows, even the inside sub-folder is updated, the top level folder date is not changed.
How do I make the top folder's Date Modified reflect the latest modified dates of any items inside the sub-folder? That is if any inside item inside multiple levels of sub-folder is modified and updated, how can I make the Date Modified updated for all the upper levels folders, or just the top level folder?

I have been using Windows XP for years. Recently I installed Windows Vista Ultimate. Before Vista there was a great product called Windows Pictures and Fax Viewer which also has a feature to change Picture layout (rotate left/right). The nice thing about it was that while changing the layout it did not change the file's Modified Date.
Now, in Vista's Photo Gallery, this feature is missing. I mean, you can still rotate pictures, but it changes the Modified date to todays date. This is not good, as the pictures then are not arranged properly by date/time, and the only way to arrange them is to use Date Taken attribute (which is not standard file attribute and only present in .jpg files).
1. how to setup Photo Gallery that it does not change last Modified Date on changing the picture layout.
2. Alternatively, please advice is it possible to install XP's Picture and Fax viewer on Vista.............

I was recently victim to a malware attack on my computer, quite a few nasty rogues. Included ave.exe, irz.exe, Ikydua.exe, Ikydub.exe, Ikyduc.exe, Ikydud.exe, and many many more. They would launch whenver I tried to open any application that the viruses thought could be used against them. Anyways, I finally reclaimed control of my computer and quarantined and deleted all of the bad exes and registry keys. However, my permissions are still messed up from the attack. For example, I can no longer open regedit or merge .reg files.

Also, I believe the attack originated from somebody using an IP sniffer on an internet forum and specifically targeting my IP. I talked to some friends who's IPs were also compromised, and they said that they were attacked at around the same time. So, is there any way I can change my external IP to avoid future attacks? I'm hooked up via a cable modem.

Coming to work today after the clocks had been put forwards on Sunday for British Summer Time and wishing to check if the files stored on my data pen were up to date, I saw that Vista had put the Time Modified of all its files exactly one hour forward. This is not a small problem with the program. Had I not realised this, I could have assumed that the files on that PC were the newer version (they weren't). It showed me as having ammended files after the time I'm supposed to have left the office.

Running Vista Ultimate on a Dell laptop. Suddenly all names show as date modified. Tried the registry 'bags' resets and checking folder type under 'Customize This Folder...' When i right click on the columns, the name column (and a few others) are not available... anywhere. All file and folder names show as the Date modified, except for folder names which show in the Navigation Pane. Tried creating a new Administrator account - same thing, safe mode - same thing. Copied files to another computer and they are fine. Also can access files round about through explorer and then typing in a file name. Tried SFC/scannow - ok. Full virus and spyware scan with AVG AV and AS and Hijack This - clean. System Restore and disk cache are turned off because of good speed increase, so needless to say i cannot go back. Even if i could i would rather know what is causing this issue. Is there an area of the registry which holds the column names? Also not sure if this is related but Search fails to initialize.

I've got an 32 bit application that uses a data feed plugin two .dll components of this plugin need to be placed in the application folder but the third which is an API needs to go to Windows>system32 folder. The application can not load under Vista Home Premium x64 the API .dll residing in system 32. needless to say that everything worked fine with Windows XP. I have no clue where the problem is. Is there any security Vista that I'm not aware of?

If you use Vista's built-in partition tool, do you risk deleting files? I used Easeus partition manager with an XP system. When I tried to restart, windows gave me "system32 hal.dll is missing or corrupted". I re-installed XP but I want to create a new partition on my Vista system so I can use Window 7 beta. Does this happen much when creating new partitions? I have had good luck with Easeus with two other systems. Am I better off using Vista's tool? Is there a chance I will loose a system file?

I am not logged in as Administrator. I did turn off UAP.

when I do a search (starting with my C: drive) for a file, uring the process a window opens to the System32 folder and will not close until search stops. The title on the window says "Please, locate the volume number 1" While the window is open, on the bottom right there is a "Backup Archives" button. If I click it, I get a list consisting of what appears to be Chinese characters. I do have my search set up to look in all folders.
