This evening after an unexpected shut-down of Windows, I got a prompt to check out Problem Reports and Solutions. This is what I found in that log; Problems with Wdi Service Host - 48 similar Events are reported since 07 Feb 09. Problems with Wdi System Host - 35 similar Events are reported since 07 Feb 09. And do the two following snips have any relevance to the two above?
View 6 RepliesI really need to change a system file called 'hosts'. I've changed it many times before, but today I'm not allowed. I access the file, make a very small change, then try to save it just by leaving the path as is. Then I get a message that says "Cannot save file, check path.." But I haven't changed the path.

In the process I accidentally changed the extension of the orignal HOSTS file, it is now a .org file and I cannot find a way to get rid of the extension. There are no previous versions to restore to, and renaming no longer changes the file type. How can I either create a new HOSTS file, or restore the orginal one?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have no idea which category in the forums this post should go! So I've been having these random hibernation problems for a while now, but last week, it got REALLY bad. I'm on an HP Pavilion dv2500 and I left it on to download something and then accidentally fell asleep myself. When woke up the next morning found out the thing had hibernated on me again.Well, nothing unusual there as I have this problem frequently, except this time, it couldn't resume windows - kept on getting stuck at this black screen during boot with this flashing horizontal cursor in the corner of the screen. After another attempt at resuming (after manually shutting it down and opening it again) I told it to cancel resume and just start windows normally.
And that's when I noticed a myriad of symptoms! It took an AGE for me to log in, and when I finally did, I got a couple of messages, one from Norton saying it couldn't scan my email anymore and another general little windows speech bubble that said:'Failed to connect to a windows service - windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service. The problem prevents limited users from logging on to the system. As an administrative user, you and review the System Event Log for details about why the service didn't respond.'....
I have altered my hosts file on both an XP and Vista computer. The XP computer correctly blocks the unwanted websites ("Page cannot be displayed") but the same exact hosts file on the vista computer shows the sites.

I have windows vista home premiun SP1. By the way a virus altered HOSTS file and can not connect to internet with firefox, I added 127.0.0.1 to the file in order to make it work.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've just built myself a new PC, nice little setup for what i paid for it, but i'm being haunted by occasional BSOD's. Happens about once a day, more if im unlucky. Been trying to pin down exactly what is causing it but im stumped...The error i get is the same every time. It comes up with SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION and the error code is STOP: 0x0000003B No file names are ever mentioned, always that same BSOD. I'm running Vista Home Premium, the 64 bit edition. Interestingly enough while i was waiting for Microsoft to mail me the 64bit version of Vista i was using my old 32bit version, and i never had this crash. I didnt have it installed for long, so i don't know if i was just lucky, or if this is something that is specific to the 64bit version of Vista.
And the rest, keyboard mouse etc which i doubt is important. 700W PSU as well which i think should be enough. It's kinda hard to reproduce the fault, it mostly happens when i'm playing games, but has also crashed randomly when doing Vista stuff, and once when reading a very long email with my PC doing literally nothing else, so not like i was taxing it... Some things i have noticed though, which is leading me to believe it might be the graphics card. When playing WoW, i have had it crash multiple times at certain specific points. After being killed and releasing my corpse, soon as i hit the button to pop to ghost it's crashed and burned, and also i seem to have it happen a lot when i exit the game, either from in the game itself or logging out and exiting from the main menu. But then it's also been known to just crash at seemingly random points. Thought it could be dodgy ram, so i've done a full memory test, using the windows one and also memtest86 i think its called. Left my PC on overnight with it running, woke up and no errors at all. Using the latest drivers for everything thats in it, tried using beta drivers as well for the graphics card but it didnt help so i uninstalled and went back to the normal driver.
I have a vista HP set to recive auto update .This morning it shows to update XML core service 4.0 service pack 2 (KB936181) I did the update and few second later it shows the same update I did this 3 times and restarted the computer and it is still shows to update the same thing over and over.

The User Profile Service service failed the login.
User profile cannot be loaded.
Just before the problem happened I was working to remove the Anti Virus Live virus from my laptop via the techsupportforum.com forum.
Two things I did within the hour of the problem happening are:
1. I ran the malware removal program OTL

2. I cleared and set system restore's cash-

Further details-I can and am able to login to Safe Mode I do not have a program called System Restore in the System Tools folder In Safe Mode I was able to change my password, but in normal mode I get the same error message I did windows updates and then tried to remove some of those updates, with only a few files that wouldn't allow me to delete them. Thank you for visiting my thread. If anyone has any ideas on how I can fix my problem it would be great to hear about them.
Also my Windows Search service does not start. When I try to start it, I get these errors in the event log:
1. "The Windows Search Service cannot open the Jet property store.
The content index server cannot update or access information because of a database error. Stop and restart the search service. If the problem persists, reset and recrawl the content index. In some cases it may be necessary to delete and recreate the content index. (0x8004117f)"
2. "The Windows Search Service has failed to created the new system catalog. Internal error <4,0x8004117f>."
I'm totally lost as how to solve this problem. I spent hours on the web trying to find a solution, with no luck sofar. Anyone here who has a clue how to solve this one?
currently i have been trying to backup my computer using complete backup on my windows vista ultimate but every time i try when i click the button it says
(X) The backup application could not start due to an internal Error:
The specified service does not exist as an installed service. (0x80070424)
Please check your system configuration and try again.
I use Vista Ultimate 64.
For the past few weeks I've been having an issue with an Apple made service called "Bonjour Service". That service is used in several pieces of software including iTunes (which I do not use) but also some Adobe applications (Version Cue for example) and the font management utility I use which is Extensis Suitcase 11.0.1 for Windows.
Both Version Cue and Suitcase depend on the Bonjour Service to work and I have had no issues with it for months but recently, the Bonjour Service stopped working and would not start anymore. It now gives this error message when trying to start it:
"('Bonjour Service' failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."
My user account is an admin account so privileges is not an issue. I had made no changes to my system myself before the Bonjour service began to "refuse" starting but I remember that I installed a few Windows updates a couple days prior. My machine is always on and I don't re-boot everyday.
So I was wondering if anyone has heard of the issue and knows how I might fix it or if anyone can give me pointers on how I my start trouble shooting this and find what started preventing the Bonjour Service from starting. FWIW, the Windows Firewall is already off and turning off my anti-virus doesn't help (Eset NOD32).
I ran Spybot S&D, got rid of any viruses it got and Mallware Bytes, again, removed everything. Even ran McAfee and got rid of whatever. But each time i run the scan on Spybot S&D it finds site that redirect me. I press fix selected items but it responds by saying "cannot access hosts file. Access is denied" I tried to untick the "protect hosts file form hijackers" in IE tweaks but keeps getting checked. On top of that the Hosts file is missing.

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." I cannot make or restore my computer. If I go into system protection I get this error: C:WindowsSystem32SYSDM.CPL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

I have several utility software programs. I am afraid to use any of them. I am using Vista home premium 64 bit. I bought this computer back in april. after I bought it I purchased a new program called Advanced System Optimizer. When I google for information on a quality utility program this program had very high recommendations. I also have Fit-It utilities 7 and an older version of System Mechanic. My computer is running slower now and I know it needs cleaning up. The last time months ago right after I purchase Advance System Optimizer I ran the registry cleaner and it reeked havok on my system. I called the company and they told me their program I purchased was not designed for 64bit systems. Of course they didn't refund my money. Question is: My computer needs cleaning up I can tell it is running slower than it used to. What utility program is out there that will work on my system. My system is Vista Home Premium 64 bit Intel core 2 Duo 2.6 GHZ.

View 8 Replies View RelatedMy wife was on the internet and suddenly System Pro popped up and started scanning warning my wife of a virus attack on her computer and wanted her to buy the AV Pgm for $49.95. She just clicked all the exits and got off of the internet and now she is locked out of her computer. We can't get system restore to work, Can't get safe mode to work, She has AVG 8 installed but cannot start it. Tried SFC /scannow but was denied access. Tried putting the Windows XP disk in to do a repair and was unable to get it to start. I think the only thing to do is reformat the HD and start over but her PC ignores the A drive and the dvd drives. I cannot get into it in order to re format it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a problem currently with Windows Vista Ultimate(Integrale), this occurred last Friday evening. I was finishing off a word document when suddenly all went black. As an end user I assumed this was a system crash and so rebooted my system, then ran registry repair, then checked for viruses etc with Live OneCare, eventually reloaded Vista all to no avail. Each time I rebooted I was greeted by a black screen after logging in.
I called my tech support who could not help but I did manage to gain access to the internet and after a short while found an item entitled Black Screen Death. This reported that all my problems where due to Microsoft thinking I had a non genuine copy of Vista it went on to explain how you could circum-navigate the problem (this I did and even though I have to repeat this process each time I log on I can use Windows normally). I purchased my copy of Vista Ulitimate from a large chain store at the not give away price of over 400 Euros and registered the same online on the day of installation and have been running for sometime with other Microsoft products including Live OneCare. Why then am I suddenly crippled for an entire weekend by Microsoft security and how can I rectify the situation perminently
I am trying to get rid of system restore shadow copies on my Vista home premium. I keep getting system error when I try to reduce the room used on my C drive as I only have 28gb of 145gb left. I have tried typing in:vssadmin list shadowstorage For the above command to run you must use elevated privileges:
1.. Click on the Start menu then click All Programs / Accessories
2.. Right Click on the Command Prompt option and from the drop down menu click on the Run as Administrator option
3.. At the command prompt type vssadmin list shadowstorage and Press Enter
(NOTE: if the command does not run change directories to c:windowssystem32) After the vssadmin has executed you will see results similar to the following:.....

The maximum space allocated for System restore is 2.092 GB To view the number of restore points you currently have on your Computer run the following command vssadmin list shadows Next, to reduce the allocated space used by Vista's System Restore, use the following command: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=[OnVolumeSpec:] /for=[ForVolumeSpec:] /maxsize=[MaxSizeSpec] Where example: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /On=C: /For=C: /Maxsize=1GB When decreasing the space allocated to System Restore, you will loose the earlier system restore points. I have a system that has FAT16 file system on it. I have that file system on that for some reason so I don’t need to upgrade on that….but recently I had some files deleted and now I need to get them back. They are important for my official use and hold great importance. I know that there is software for recovery but since I have a FAT16 file system I guess that all won’t work on that.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a program that installs a service. Somehow the program stopped working and gives me a message that it can't communicate with its service. I checked in services and it's running OK. I decided to uninstall the program and re-install. However, after uninstalling the program, the service is still there and running. I would like to remove it and start from scratch. Is the only way to go in the registry and delete the appropriate key? I didn't see a way to uninstall or remove services otherwise.
