Attachment Not Open Up Email
Dec 31, 2009I am using Windows Vista Mail in the Vista Premium Home Version, 2007, Service Pack 2. Recently, I attached some reduced size photos (about 60kb each) to an email. When I sent the email, they remained attached but also, they opened up for viewing in the body of the email, making the email HUGE in size. I have searched for ways to turn this feature off, so that the attached photos do not open and show up in the body of the email, but without any luck. Therefore, currently I cannot turn this feature off. I only want photos to be attached, NOT OPEN UP to be viewed in the body of the email. Does anybody know how to change the setting in my Windows Mail so that the attachments will NOT open up?

I am not a Geek (no ofense) and just have basic computer skills. My question - are these softward applications easy to use or do you need to to have higher skill levels? Feb 9, 2009I have backup software on my computer that backs up to an off-sitelocation.I had some questions about how well it was or wasn't functioning, and I attempted to send the tech a copy of the data log as an attachment to my email to him.However, after I attach it to the email, when I try to send it I get a pop-up that says, "Some of the files could not be found, and could not be attached to the message. Would you like to send the message anyway?" What is causing this problem? As far as I can tell, I do not have the
file opened when I'm trying to send the email. (I sent the log anyway by copying it and pasting it into a Word document, and then attaching that to my email.)
Email Blank, No Attachment, Nothing Showing
Jul 8, 2008We have 4 computers in our office. One runs Vista - the other 3 are XP. A customer of ours sends an email to my email address and the Vista guy's email address with a PDF attachment enclosed. I get the attachment, but the Vista guy does not. His email is blank with no attachment clip or nothing showing any kind of an attachment. How can that be? If I 'forward' the Vista guy in our office the same email that was sent to both of us, THEN he receives the attachment and can view it. How can someone forward an email attachment to two people and one of them not get it?? I've checked all his security settings and his firewall and nothing is amiss. He can get email attachments from everyone except this one customer.

Aug 7, 2009I just received an email that also has an attachment. There is a spot for the attachment (picture) to actually appear in the email--there is a red square box with a little "x" on the upper left side where the picture should be; but there is nothing in the box. But I can open the attachment with I click on it. The attachment is: image003.jpg(12.5KB). I am running Vista Home Premium with Norton's 360.

Feb 5, 2009I'm new to this, so hope I'm not being repetitive. I recently started working from a home office. Got most things working fine. However, when I receive a vCard as an email attachment, it comes with a generic icon and won't open. I tried associating it with MS Outlook, so now it opens a new email, with the vcf file in the attachment spot. If I double-click that, it does it again. Of course, now I can't remove the association - and in any event I don't know what program to put in its place. I've tried clicking the "find appropriate programme on the web". It tells me that the file is a .vcf (I knew that) but doesn't provide me with the program I need. In the past Outlook has just automatically handled this stuff.

Aug 23, 2009My system restore fails every time I attempt it. This has happened the last 3 times I had a need to attempt restore. (Three attempts separated by months in time, about different issues.) This time, I am thinking something may be wrong with my system restore function.
In this case, it is simply a matter of trying to roll back a browser update.
I saw a whole list of available restore points, and I went to the second one back - from only a few days ago. The restore failed.
I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, OEM from Gateway Laptop about 1.5 yrs old. I allow most updates.

Feb 2, 2010How can I look at the top level folder date modified, I can tell any item inside all the sub-folder was updated or created? So the top level folder 'date modified' is the latest date. Current, in Windows, even the inside sub-folder is updated, the top level folder date is not changed.
How do I make the top folder's Date Modified reflect the latest modified dates of any items inside the sub-folder? That is if any inside item inside multiple levels of sub-folder is modified and updated, how can I make the Date Modified updated for all the upper levels folders, or just the top level folder?
Photo Gallery Changes Modified Date
Apr 9, 2008I have been using Windows XP for years. Recently I installed Windows Vista Ultimate. Before Vista there was a great product called Windows Pictures and Fax Viewer which also has a feature to change Picture layout (rotate left/right). The nice thing about it was that while changing the layout it did not change the file's Modified Date.
Now, in Vista's Photo Gallery, this feature is missing. I mean, you can still rotate pictures, but it changes the Modified date to todays date. This is not good, as the pictures then are not arranged properly by date/time, and the only way to arrange them is to use Date Taken attribute (which is not standard file attribute and only present in .jpg files).
1. how to setup Photo Gallery that it does not change last Modified Date on changing the picture layout.
2. Alternatively, please advice is it possible to install XP's Picture and Fax viewer on Vista.............
Modified Permissions As A Result Of Virus.
Mar 23, 2010I was recently victim to a malware attack on my computer, quite a few nasty rogues. Included ave.exe, irz.exe, Ikydua.exe, Ikydub.exe, Ikyduc.exe, Ikydud.exe, and many many more. They would launch whenver I tried to open any application that the viruses thought could be used against them. Anyways, I finally reclaimed control of my computer and quarantined and deleted all of the bad exes and registry keys. However, my permissions are still messed up from the attack. For example, I can no longer open regedit or merge .reg files.
Also, I believe the attack originated from somebody using an IP sniffer on an internet forum and specifically targeting my IP. I talked to some friends who's IPs were also compromised, and they said that they were attacked at around the same time. So, is there any way I can change my external IP to avoid future attacks? I'm hooked up via a cable modem.
Changed Time Modified Of Files
Mar 30, 2010Coming to work today after the clocks had been put forwards on Sunday for British Summer Time and wishing to check if the files stored on my data pen were up to date, I saw that Vista had put the Time Modified of all its files exactly one hour forward. This is not a small problem with the program. Had I not realised this, I could have assumed that the files on that PC were the newer version (they weren't). It showed me as having ammended files after the time I'm supposed to have left the office.

Apr 13, 2008Running Vista Ultimate on a Dell laptop. Suddenly all names show as date modified. Tried the registry 'bags' resets and checking folder type under 'Customize This Folder...' When i right click on the columns, the name column (and a few others) are not available... anywhere. All file and folder names show as the Date modified, except for folder names which show in the Navigation Pane. Tried creating a new Administrator account - same thing, safe mode - same thing. Copied files to another computer and they are fine. Also can access files round about through explorer and then typing in a file name. Tried SFC/scannow - ok. Full virus and spyware scan with AVG AV and AS and Hijack This - clean. System Restore and disk cache are turned off because of good speed increase, so needless to say i cannot go back. Even if i could i would rather know what is causing this issue. Is there an area of the registry which holds the column names? Also not sure if this is related but Search fails to initialize.

By the way a virus altered HOSTS file and can not connect to internet with firefox, I added 127.0.0.1 to the file in order to make it work.

1. I click the Firewall control panel and I get an error "Error loading firewall.cpl. Firewall.cpl is not a valid win32 application" It sure is not valid: when I go to C:WindowsSystem32Firewall.cpl, it shows a file of ZERO bytes!
2. I try to click the Windows program installation/repair/removal control panel, and the window blinks in and out.
It's been 28 months since this Vista installation has been in use, and often rescued in ways that avoided a clean install entirely.
I think it is now time to do the clean install. For one thing, the 100 GB Seagate drive (the one with the bootable Vista partition) after about two years revealed 432 read errors with a region of the hard disk (discovered by 'ddrescue' while using Ubuntu Linux), probably because the HP Pavilion dv9500t like all HP notebooks is notorious for overheating, and this failure to cool damages CPUs and shorten hard disk life.
MY PROBLEM: I am now living on the other side of the world. I made recovery disks using HP's recovery manager, and I think the recovery partition is deleted (not sure), but they were left with relatives on the other side of the world (mistakenly). HP does not answer requests for how to get recovery disks.
QUESTION: I have recovered the product key for the Vista installation using product key recovery software (the Microsoft label on the bottom of the computer is smudged beyond readability, not so for HP's label). Is there a way to download Vista installation somehow and use my product key to autheneticate the installation?

Dec 17, 2008I currently have an Asus M50SA laptop running Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit. Recently my hard drive was failing and had to get it repaired. So I used the Windows Back up utility and backed up the entire hard drive to an external 3.5 inch usb hard drive. I then sent my laptop off to get repaired and they took out the hard drive and put a new one in and re-installed Vista for me. However, when I went to run the recovery program from the install disk, it kept coming up with the error that it could not find any backups. Using the command prompt though, I could connect to my USB drive and see the image. What do I need to do to get the recovery software to see the VHD file on the USB drive?

The first thread died] I had this Vista Home Basic machine working okay, but the power went out and then another person who was high used the machine. They named a new user as administrator. I don't know what else they did. Now I have a new user as administrator and the previous users are gone. I still see evidence of them in the file tree but the old programs are gone and the documents are buried in C > Users > Admin (that was a name of a previous user that I had named when I first got the machine)
I've gradually installed some of my old programs and I'm currently just rebuilding everything, but it would be a lot easier if I could revert to the old user system. The Control Panel > add or remove user accounts is useless. I only have two icons there So is there anyway to return to the original condition? How can I recover the missing users?

I'm basically fighting one thing at a time and hopefully, will get it back the way it used to be, I dunnoh. My Windows Mail I had to start over from scratch and set up. My old HD began making noises so I bought a new 750KB FireAgent last week,
(ST307504FPA1E3-RK), and Backed it up immediately, before Dell replaced it.
I had my HD set with 4 partitions and Backed them up individually: C-OS & important
programs, D-Vista's Recovery, E-non-critical programs , F-Data.
There were other problems in the C: OS drive so I could not just restore it as I had to use the Dell reinstallation CD.
I have restored most folders and files, BUT my Vista Mail "Local Folders" with all the subfolders and messages did not restore. If I look in I:/backup/CarlP,
I can see C, D, E, F. But, I don't know what I'm looking for, don't know what they would be called, where they are, and how to get them back. It's imperative that I DO restore the information stored in the messages.
