Need To Turn Off Read Only Rights To System32.
Jun 1, 2006
Finally managed to get a hold of beta2 and got it installed.I installed all of our software and it worked being happy, I shut the machine down and left for the long weekend. Now our software is not working again because we need read/write access to c:windowssystem32.I tried to turn off the read only attribute but I don't have sufficient rights to do so.I am logged in under my own user name and I have admin priviliges. I am not logged in as Administrator. I did turn off UAP.

I've got an 32 bit application that uses a data feed plugin two .dll components of this plugin need to be placed in the application folder but the third which is an API needs to go to Windows>system32 folder. The application can not load under Vista Home Premium x64 the API .dll residing in system 32. needless to say that everything worked fine with Windows XP. I have no clue where the problem is. Is there any security Vista that I'm not aware of?

If you use Vista's built-in partition tool, do you risk deleting files? I used Easeus partition manager with an XP system. When I tried to restart, windows gave me "system32 hal.dll is missing or corrupted". I re-installed XP but I want to create a new partition on my Vista system so I can use Window 7 beta. Does this happen much when creating new partitions? I have had good luck with Easeus with two other systems. Am I better off using Vista's tool? Is there a chance I will loose a system file?

I'm having a problem getting a screensaver I made to run from the system32 folder. The screensaver is a .scr file, and it runs perfectly fine from any other folder when I double click it and what not. However, when I move it to my system32 folder and double click it, it just brings up a black screen.
The reason I have to have it in that folder is because I'm trying to use a sidebar gadget to display this screensaver on my desktop, and the gadget only accepts screensavers from the system32 folder.

when I do a search (starting with my C: drive) for a file, uring the process a window opens to the System32 folder and will not close until search stops. The title on the window says "Please, locate the volume number 1" While the window is open, on the bottom right there is a "Backup Archives" button. If I click it, I get a list consisting of what appears to be Chinese characters. I do have my search set up to look in all folders.

I have my Vista laptop (HP) hooked up to an external monitor, I have been using the sleep mode at night. The laptop is closed and on a shelf that is very hard to get to. I would like to shut it off at night. I can shut it off with the keyboard. Is there any way possibly software controlled to turn it back on? To reach the power button on the laptop you must first raise the lid which there is not room to do

I a work at a very small software company here in Mich and i have having issues installing our software on vista to beta test. The installation script needs to install some DAO files to c:program filesMS sharedDAO
I decided to see if it was a rights issue so I logged in with the administrator account and tried to delete one of these files. I get a cryptic message about not having necessary rights (There is security controling access to this file... you do not have sufficient permission.)

Is this necessary? I see it as a hack to circumvent tight code. I always use an account with admin rights so I know when/what to install/run.

I've had this problem for 3 days now and googled all I can! I have come across people who have also had the same problem but found no conclusion to it! I have a Asrock MOBO, amd quadcore processor, 6gig ram....Basically when installing vista x64 it does everything perfect untill it gets too expanding files and it just stays there at 0%, first time I tryed it, it got to 22% and just stayed there... My HDD is IDE not SATA/SATAll does that make any difference? Or am I on the wrong tracks? I thought maybe my HDD wasnt set up right in the BIOs and tryed every setting and have the same effect.. I am having trouble getting clips to play using Windows Vista with Windows Media Player 11 via the UEFA.com site. I have tried following the FAQ on http://support.uefa.com and also contacted support to no avail. They mention reinstalling Windows Media Player 11, however, this is not possible in Vista as far as I know. I have also tried deleting the DRM folder. Unfortunately, this has not fixed the issue. Finally, the same clips play on my Windows XP Pro machine without any problems. What else could be wrong?

I am trying to install a HP printer on Vista Ultimate.I finally got the compatibility for to XP but now the install says I don't have administrator rights. The user account is an administrtor user account. Tried rebooting, short of booting computer out the door, but I can not get the HP printer to install as I can't get past this hurdle. Auto run will not work and will not install from the run setup.exe. Will not allow this either.

It looks like my Media PC restarted while Media Centre was still running and somehow it has corrupted a couple of DLL files.
OLEACC.DLL
WINTRUST.DLL
I have tried running System File Checker, while confirmed that some files were corrupted, but it couldn't fix them. Eventually I worked out how to change the permissions on those files so that I can manually replace them, but can't find a fresh file to replace them with, either on the Vista DVD or on the Net.

Running Windows Vista Ultimate. Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email. Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working. What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

Im running Vista Home Prem. 64, Im trying to get two applications of mine to open with Admin rights when going through a shortcut. I'm going to the actual file within Program Files/Application/exe. and right clicking it to bring up the Properties. Now within the Properties / Compatibiliy... I see the option checkbox for "Run this Program as an Administrator", but it appears greyed out. How do I get this option to become active, so I do not have to right click and select "Run as Admin" everytime I want to open the application? I am the admin for the computer, it is just my home computer, built and installed by myself.

Lost Administration rights so unable to install any programs nor could I uninstall unwanted programs, - Unable to do a System Restore or Discscan. Last Windows update was in July this year and Windows Defender failed to defend although I do have AVG running continuously. Now System Restore provides only the manufacture date which is July 2007, months before I got the system.
Last Friday after speaking to HP technical it was deemed that I have probably a corrupt C:// harddrive and would need to reinstall the system again and loose all my folders, files etc and start again. Naturally I'm quaking in fear of loosing all items not backed up on discs.............

I am embarrassed to ask it. Previously I had WindowsXP on my laptop - to turn it off you went to Start, Turn Off Computer. This laptop is using Vista, and I cannot find anything comparable. Last night I turned it off using the off-on button, so got the Windows did not shut off properly message when I turned it on; and I have a "thing" about leaving my computer on overnight. Also, is there a way of hiding all the command bars to "hide" like you can with the taskbar on the bottom?

He isnt amazing with pc's so he gave it to me so I could have a go at gettin it back on track... so far nothin has changed same screen comes up sayin that windows cannot repair itself... says something about the file system32/drivers/kkmbyd.sys is corrupt. I tried to restore to an earlier point in time but it wont work cause it says that there are no earlier versions saved. They only idea that came into my head was to fully restore windows, but his hardrive has a lot of valuable data and im worried it will be lost

I restored my vista OS using a system image utility provided by Alienware. It created a backup folder on the c drive with all the old files in it, including user profiles. I changed the owner of all files and folders back to my account and tried to delete it, but got the UAC messages that I need to allow administrator rights to do so. After clicking yes, I got a message that permission was denied with the only options of "Try Again" or "Cancel". After making visible all hidden files and folders, I was able to drill down to the one file I could not delete. I've used the "take ownership" steps in Vista explorer properties, and also the "takeown" dos commands, which report success that the Administrators group or my account which belongs to the administrators group, is the owner of the file, and that I have full control of it. Even so, I cannot delete this file. In DOS, I get access denied. In Explorer, I get the "you need permission to perform this action" message, with "try again" or "cancel", and it shows that my account (or administrators group, doing it that way) is the owner. It's just this one file. I was able to delete all other files and folders around this file, but just not this one.
I wonder if the folder path is so long or so nested that UAC fails to figure it out? It was in users\appdata
oamingetc. Or is the file corrupt? The file is a tempory file created by one of those biometric devices when logged on with your fingerprint, and is supposed to disappear when you log off, but it seems to have remained there because of a hard boot. Is there a utility I can use that can nuke this one lone file?

I have a lot of misc. cds that a friend who passed away made. They are pics & music mostly. Some slide shows too but I can't get them to open anywhere.
I told his wife I'd go through them but impossible if my computer won't read them. I believe most of them were made on XP and I have Vista. Called Gateway but they didn't know. I tried a couple on an HP with XP and they all were read. Does anyone know if this is a Vista problem or is it my computer?
My warranty is up in May so I'm hoping if it's the computer I'll have time to get it fixed under warranty.

Another Vista Ultimate 32bit weird prob I have. Whenever I insert any disc be it CD/DVD, and I double-click on the DVD icon to open it, I keep getting "Prepare this disc" option to Live format the disc. The disc could be anything a closed session disc, a manufacturer disc, I keep getting this prob. So only two ways to go ahead.
1. I've DOpus - Directory Opus, an alternative to Windows Explorer in which I can Sometimes view the disc, though not always
2. The best way I've figured out is for me to simply click "Next" and wait for Windows to tell me that it cannot format my disc and then I can access the contents.
3. Auto-run registry fix doesnt cure it. (updated after flavirus replied)
Any Ideas why this is happening? I uninstalled the drivers of my drives, I've two, Sony DVD-writer SATA and Lite-on DVD-writer IDE. In WinXP I didn't have this prob with these drives, so i know this is a software issue.
