Installing: "launch Repair, Or Start Windows Normally"
Aug 6, 2009
I have a 120GB Sata drive and I am stuck in a loop. The loop is "launch repair, or start windows normally" I have tried both. I have also did F8 and did safe mode, etc. However I want to just clean it off & start over. I put the cd in, it boots then it does "Copy setup files" The bar finishes, it goes to another screen, and it just sits there, with the mouse....just sits there for hours. I am willing to buy another HD just didn't want to if it's not that.

I shut my computer off last night as I normally do before I went to bed. It shut down without any issues. Everything was the same as it normally is. When I went to turn on my computer today, it goes through the Dell startup screen, then it tells me there might be a problem with some hardware or something to that effect and gives me the option to either “Launch Startup Repair” or “Start Window Normally”, then windows attempts to start (has the green scrolling bar at the bottom). Either of these options take me to the same place next which is a screen that states “System Recovery Options”, and asks me to select my keyboard language. So I did and hit “next” to continue to a screen that asks me to sign into my account on the computer, and then it took me to another page that displayed a box of system recovery tools.
Being a little confused about what was happening, I selected the option for “Startup Repair”. When it finished I chose to restart the computer as it noted that if the problem was fixed it would start normally. It didn’t start normally and I went through the same process again when it rebooted. I have tried this option many times today, and it isn’t working. I also have tried a few times the option for “Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool”. It goes trough the tests, says nothing about finding a problem, then the computer restarts to the same situation............

I have a dell 1525 running vista home premium 32bit. Just a few minutes ago I was transfering music from my hard drive to my external hard drive, while on the internet looking at videos. I noticed that the file transfer process was taking a while so i decided to cancel the process. Some error message popped up after a while, being stupid I didn't write them down and kept watching my videos. My desktop disappeared and i cou;dn't start task manager so i decided to restart my computer... When I restarted I was greeted with "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.
2. Choose your language settings and click next.
3. Click "repair your computer"
It also gives me the following options:
4. Safe Mode
5. Safe Mode with networking
6. Safe Mode with Command Prompt
7. Last known good configuration
8. Start Windows normally
When I restart booting from the reinstall dvd from dell and i get to the repair my computer part, vista isn't listed in the options to repair. And I can't browse my main hard drive. Also when I start into safe mode, all the driver load then I get a quick flash of a blue screen which says(i video tapped it then slowed it down to read the message): A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.........

I have an Acer Extensa laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium installed. Its been working great for over a year now untill yesterday when all of a sudden it wouldn't boot up properly. It continued to go to start-up repair, but that kept on failing. After trying all other tools, (system restore had no restore points for some odd reason)... I tried safe mode. That did not work. It instead went back to the start-up repair screen. The same warning message popped up everytime it failed "Cannot repair automatically, click finish blah blah blah". When I bought this laptop from Best Buy, I did not recieve any type of Disk for Vista, it was already loaded on there... I would rather not do a clean install.

A while ago on my desktop Vista I was installing some updates. After I restarted the computer, it went straight to startup repair. I used system restore to restore to a point before I installed the updates. My computer worked fine. Thinking it hadn't been the updates that had caused the problem, I updated again but with the same results. This has also happned on other computers of mine. Ever since then, I have never installed a single update. I am wondering if this is a good idea or not.

It won't start in safe mode & system restore (6 points) has not enough free space to restore the disk (I was backing up files into a folder to copy to an external drive filling the drive when it crashed - doh) & it says the Recovery X the disk is not in the selected restore point. Is there a way of copying files to enable the system resore to work or some other things to try.

I cannot launch Windows Live Mail. When I do I get an error stating Sorry, something unexpected happened and Windows Live Mail must close. Your most recent changes may not be saved. The mail on this workstation was saved from an account that is no longer working. All of the inbox mail was empty and moved to folders. I can see the folder structures when I open the application, but this error closes down the program. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the Windows Live Mail without results.

I have this infamous windows media player crashes on launch issue after I did a restore from one harddrive to another using Ultimate x64 backup feature. Now whenever I launch windows media player it crashes on launch with the indiv01.exe fault. I looked at the guide to fix it and how I need to edit the registry, but I have no registry entry for DRM/DataPath.
How would I add it or does anyone have more detailed steps on how to set this up if I don't even have this registry key? I also do not have any DRM content, so this might be why i don't have this datapath. I'll do a re-install if I have to, but I really don't want to at the moment.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on my computer and just recently I lost my Quick Launch toolbar. I tried re-activating it by right clicking on the toolbar area and selecting it from properties but nothing happens. Tried rebooting the computer as well and nothing. It seems it totally erased from my system. Now, I read through some of the other posts before and saw that going back to a previous restore point would work for most people but my computer wont let me, it gives me the "unspecified error" thing every time. I'm running Norton 2008 on my PC and I saw that for some other person that was the issue. how they fixed their problem. How exactly or what exactly did you disactivate from your Norton to allow for the restore point option to work?

WMDC (Windows Mobile Device Center) will not even open up for me.
I double click the icon in the control panel and nothing! I even tried to install the update and still nothing! Vista is crumbling away at my feet. I am having multiple problems and they are ALL Vista related not hardware, anti-virus related, or firewall related. I have a t-mobile wing. It used to sync up fine. But one day WMDC stopped working.
I tried to restore back to a previous restore point and Vista won't let me go back to ANY previous point. Windows Media Center won't let me play live TV either.I have NO more days left on my Vista support. I consider myself an advanced user and NOTHING I've tried has worked.

One Vista PC, one W2K3 server on the network. Verizon supplied FIOS router gets me on the internet. The network runs great once it is connected. When I click diagnose and repair on the network icon the result is a "cant repair the problem" answer.

I have a serious problem with my Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit OS (SP2 installed). It all started when my CD/DVD-Drive was not recognised anymore in Windows Explorer, Windows Device-Manager and even BIOS. This problem was caused by Audiograbber Software Installation & Use.
It is a known bug in Vista. Microsoft has set up an automatic "Fix-this" utility. Or can choose to manually fix the problem. This includes deleting some Registry Entries (UpperFilter and LowerFilter), which are responsible for Disc-Drive control in Vista. As the automatic fix did not work for me I decided to manually delete Upperfilter and Lowerfilter Registry Entries (without making a backup prior). I screwed it all up! The consequence: Vista-Startup got stuck in bluescreen/restart loop..............

I haveWindows Home Premium 32bit and a serious problem with "Windows Defender"I once attempted to get rid of Windows Defender. The result is that my system starts with
a warning saying that some programs were blocked. If I try to see which programs I get the following error "Impossibile inizializzare l'applicazione: 0x800106ba...".
I could not find a way to fix it.I search the windows site but their solutionsare not applicable since "Windows Defender" does not appear in the list of installed programs.
Therefore I cannot uninstall it.
I also tried
"msiexec /uninstall
windowsdefender.msi /quiet /log uninstall.log"
which does nothing usefull
(empty log and no solution to the problem).
I have tried to reinstall but then it complains it is already installed. Is there a way to fix this problem without having to reinstall windows vista which in my case would mean
a full format (I have a restoration vista cd which came with my laptop).

I had Vista on an nVidia RAID configuration (with two IDE drives in the array: sda and sdb) and wanted to install Linux, so I got myself a SATA HDD (appears as sdc), installed it, and proceeded to install Ubuntu on
that drive. Well, GRUB overwrote my MBR and wouldn't even boot into ANY OS (I kept getting a GRUB stage 1.5 error 21). After trying to fix this problem, I decided to try to get things back to square 1 and start over
with the dual boot thing. I erased everything that was on the SATA drive, then I booted into the Windows Recovery Environment last night and tried the "Startup Repair". I sat there thinking for about two hours and said that it couldn't fix anything. Then I brought up the command line and did:
bootrec /fixmbr -> says it completed successfully
bootrec /fixboot -> says element not found
bootrec /scanos -> finds one windows installation (my Vista
installation on the C: drive)
What have I done to my computer? An interesting note: I downloaded and burned SuperGRUB to a CD, and if
I boot from this CD I can use the Boot Partition tool to boot into Windows. But this is far from perfect as if I want to boot into Windows I have to go through the CD.
So my question is: Is there any way to repair my Windows installation (namely the MBR), or do I have to do a clean install? From what I understand my HDD configuration is as follows:
hd0 (blank) hd1 (has Windows on it)
---- ----
SATA Drive (sdc) nVidia RAID Array (2 IDE drives: sda and sdb)
Once everything is back to normal, how do I install Ubuntu the 'right' way?

The computer is a Dell Inspiron with a recevery partition (D. Iinstalled SP1 two days ago. Since then the computer has been rebooted about 5 times. On the 6th, all hell broke loose. I don't believe any changes have been made since then. Naively, I want to question how RE does not know how to work with Vista SP1. Perhaps RE is on the D: partition and was not updated?

I have a Dell Dimension E520, which won?t boot to Windows (Vista), and none
of the repair options work:
Startup repair
Reports repair fail due to problem with registry
System Restore
Reports no restore points available
Windows Complete PC Restore
Reports no backups available
Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
No memory problems
Command Prompt. Can?t think of any appropriate command to use here. So I booted with the system DVD (as one would with XP) but the upgrade option has been greyed out. I don?t want to do a clean install. I want to repair the existing installation.

I have Vista Home Premium 32-bit, on Dell Inspiron 6400. After a repair install, I now have two problems: - Although there are 75 Windows Updates in the list, I have tried several times over the last two days to install these. So far, only a few are marked "Successful". The great majority are marked "Failed". - There is no SP1 available in the list of updates.
Here is the history:
- My laptop was pre-loaded with Vista (no SP1). The OEM DVD was also SP0.
- I installed SP1 when it became available.
- A few days ago, I neede to do a repair install. So I uninstalled SP1, and did a repair install as specified in Brink's tutorial:
Repair Install For Vista
- As far as I know, the repair completed successfully. There were no "Files discarded by Windows Upgrade" (Maybe this is important!). I was not asked for my product key, or asked to activate Vista.
- Immediately after the repair, I launched Windows Update, and found the two problems noted above.
BTW: To the best of my knowledge, my laptop is working fine. The minor glitches that prompted the repair install have disappeare.

After excessive testing & diagnosing, I've concluded that the following causes my "network connections" to be deleted, and I get a Code-19 (corrupted/missing driver) for my Network Adapters happens if I use WINDOWS help! Here is what happens: For one reason or another, I lose connectivity. I have a fickle ISP and I'm always resetting my cable modem, etc.
1.) I double-click the tray icon for "network," then go to Network & Sharing Center.
2.) Under Network (my actual connection,) I click "view status," then click "Properties."
3.) A "Diagnose" button is available. As soon as I push it, I'm usually given several options: Reset the adapter, Get new IP settings, etc..............
