Did Not Make Any Partitions System Drive

May 14, 2009

I just got my new build up and running late last night and during Vista installation, I did not make any partitions to my main system drive. I would like to make a couple, maybe one for Windows and programs and one for dedicated swap space. My main question is do you think it would be best just to reinstall windows and do it from there? Or just as good to use Disk Management to do it?

Hard Drive Partitions

May 31, 2009

After many years of faithful service the CD bootable version of Partition Magic 8.0 has become obsolete when it comes to drives that have been touched Vista 64-bit and Windows 7?! I get the Partition Magic "Error 105" and it quits. In fact, Windows 7 will not install correctly on a Primary partition setup by Partition Magic. Anyway, the partitioning and formatting capability in Vista and Windows 7 gets the job done. I have just one question - how do I set up an extended partition or is that a thing of the
past too?

No User Partitions After System Restore

Mar 4, 2009

I did a system restore last Friday and all went well (I thought) However, when one of my 2 daughters attempted to gain access to her part, she was greeted with a black screen and no program icons. My other daughter attempted to do the same on her account, with the same result. Previous to the system restore, they could both access their partitions easily with everything on display. The laptop has a 250 gig h/d, and they were designated as standard accounts, mine being the admin account. They are particularly keen to retrieve their I-tunes stuff, so any help or advice would be gratefully received. I am trying hard to avoid a reformat.

Vista Running 2 Partitions Same Drive

Aug 12, 2009

Well, I had 2 versions of Vista running from 2 partitions of the same physical drive:

C: x86 (the original install) (active/primary)
K: x64 (installed later to test it as I wanted more than 3GB ram) (primary)

I then decided to get rid of the C:x86 version and just use the K:x64 one so whilst in K: and using partition software I deleted the C: and merged the K; into the free space. Seemed like a good idea at the time! Well now it won't boot at all. I'm getting the message "NTLDR is missing" at startup. So, using the Vista install disc, I got into DOS or CMD or whatever they call it nowadays and I can see that K: is now called C: My original x86 C: file structure is gone but my old K: X64 file structure is now under C:

Managing Hard Drive Space / Partitions

Mar 7, 2009

I recently purchased a laptop with Vista x64 on it. When I went to manage my hard drive there was a ~150gb C drive and a ~140gb D drive. There was also a 10gb partition in front of the C drive with absolutely nothing on it, so I turned it into unallocated space. Is there any way to merge this with the C drive to gain the 10gb? I can format this 10gb but It is only contiguous with the C drive. I was thinking possibly using other software to do this but i'm not sure what would work.

Creating More Than 4 Partitions, Unallocated, Format And Assign A Drive Letter

Jul 4, 2008

Two of us have been searching for hours (forums, newsgroups, google) on how to create more then 4 partitions in on the same drive in Vista. We understand you can't have any more then 4 primary partitions. Here is how the Dell M1530 XPS came preconfigured as:

Partition 1 = OEM (Dell Utilities)
Partition 2 = Primiary (Dell Recovery)
Partition 3 = Primary (C Drive with Vista)
Partition 0 = Extended
Partition 4 = Logical

NOTE: Partition 0 or 4 is for Dell Media Direct. The volumes are:

Volume 0 E DVD-ROM
Volume 1 D Recovery
Volume C OS

Partition 3 is 220GB in size. I want to shrink it to 60GB's. This would leave about 160GB as Unallocated that I want to format and assign a drive letter to (a Volume I guess). We've also played around with DiskPart a lot, so we're pretty familiar with it, although not experts. All of the instructions on the web are the same, as none of them work with more then 4 partitions of any type.

Cloning A Drive: Tranfer Entire Drive Incuding All Files And The Operating System From Current IDE HDD To A New SATA Drive

May 2, 2008

I am Using Vista Ultimate 64. I would like to tranfer my entire drive incuding all files and the Operating system From my current IDE HDD to a new SATA Drive of the sames size (500 Gig) I need the IDE Drive for an older computer ( The 40 Gig IBM Deathstar still functions great, but all programs seem more bloated these Days)

Anyway I went to Administrative Tools and Formated the New Drive NFTS with no Drive Letter. But I cannot get it recognized as a transfer device when I go to system backup. Can I use 'C' on the second and soon to be only drive? If I have to use E or F for now can I change it back later. would that affect the file system? I intend to Low level Format the IDE and try cloning the old machine's XP Drive (32 bit) to it in the second place.

Make Drive Bootable?

Mar 26, 2008

I have a dual boot setup where I boot from the first HD and start XP/Vista. Vista is installed on a separate disk. I don't use XP at all and want to remove that disk, but then I need to make the Vista disk bootable. The Vista install is on a raid volume. I googled a little bit and found some information about bootrec and tried to boot from the DVD and tried /fixboot, but nothing happens. When I load the recovery console it doesn't display any Vista installations, so I wasn't very surprised that bootrec failed. I then proceeded to load the driver for the raid controller, but still no installations are displayed. Is there a simple way to make a disk bootable for Vista - on a raid volume?

Created Another Partition On My Drive For Vista X64. (two Other Partitions Running Vista X86)

Mar 14, 2008

I'm new to Vista x64 (the op sys as well as this site). I have just endeavored to try out Vista 64 bit on one of my workstations. I run VMWare Workstation at work and can use the additional memory addressing of Vista 64 (I have 4 gigs of RAM). nyway, my problem is this.

1) I created another partition on my drive for Vista x64. (two other partitions running Vista x86).
2) I have been running dual boot with Vista for quite a while and it runs fine.
3) After creating the new partition and installing Vista x64 with SP1 (integrated service pack on install DVD), I get drive corruption problems all over the place.

I have 3 500 gigabyte Western Digital drives in this machine. The first is for operating system partitions and the second strictly for backup (using Acronis True Image) and the third for data. The data drive seems to have problems reading when I attempt to install additional drivers for the x64 bit environment (just downloaded from the web). Also, I soon will get errors afterwards on the C drive also.

Windows Vista And Make Sure That System Boots

A long time ago I installed an evaluation version of Windows Vista on the second partition of my pc, next to my installation of Windows XP (dual boot partition C and L). The evaluation period has long since expired and I am no longer using Vista. However, all the files are still present on my second partition, and every time I start my pc, the boot menu will come up. What do I need to do to completely remove all the files that belong to Windows Vista and make sure that my system boots straight into Windows XP,without stopping for the boot menu?

APIs And Kernel Features That Really Do Improve System Performance And Make It Easier

"I think the most disappointing thing for me is that part of me wants to like Vista, because there are a lot of interesting APIs and kernel features that really do improve system performance and make it easier to write for Windows" Many of them even work on older computers, and I doubt these features are why Vista is bloated. That is why I suggested trimming down Vista once.

System Restore Not Working: Unable To Make A Restore Point

Apr 11, 2008

I have a recent problem installing Windows updates on Vista Ultimate as the update process stays on 'creating restore point' forever. I've let it run as long as 7 hours in this state, with no change. It looks like the system is unable to make a restore point sucessfully. I know it has worked in the past, as I'm fairly up-to-date on Windows updates. Reading some other threads, I've tried using Disk Clean-up to remove all by the most recent restore points, and then try to disable/re-enable system restore - this part without success. When I check the system properties for System Restore, the System Restore button is greyed out. I've attached a screenshot of the screen for reference. I've checked the group policies to verify the System Restore is not disabled there.

System Restore Can't C Drive Errors

Oct 14, 2009

First off, after restarting my computer one day, I found it to either not get past the loading screen or freeze 5 minutes after if i could log on. I tried a few things that did not work and went to do a system restore from the windows repair tools upon booting up. When i tried to restore i get the message that a system restore cannot be done because the C drive had errors. It prompted me to do a disk consistency check upon restart which i did. After trying a few times i find that it always freezes at 7% through, and will not move. Finally, i tried booting into safe mode, only to find that it too freezes when it is loading files, always at windows/system32/drivers/crcdisk.sys. The computer is only 2 months old, bought brand new at best buy. A rocketfish 550watt power supply and Geforce 9800 video card were installed by the employees, but no other hardware was replaced or tampered with.

Partition: Allocate About 100GB For System Drive

Mar 31, 2008

i just install vista x64 on RAID 0 (2 X 250 Gb) volume. Volume space is 465 GB (instead of 500 GB! that?s alright), free space 451 GB, so it took 14GB on OS and Page File. Now i want to partition it and want to allocate about 100GB for system drive i think which is more then enough.::

::But the problem is, on Disk Management when i select the volume and click shrink Volume i get followings::

::Total size before shrink in MB: 476943::
::size of available shrink space in MB: 235606::
::Enter the amount of space to shrink in MB: (235606)::
::Total size after shrink in MB: 241337::

::so i can't shrink the volume less then 241337. that means it forcing me to keep the system drive about 235.68 GB! which is about the size of one of the hard drive (232.8 GB). So... what is going on? why its forcing me to keep the volume that large??::
