APIs And Kernel Features That Really Do Improve System Performance And Make It Easier

Apr 16, 2008

"I think the most disappointing thing for me is that part of me wants to like Vista, because there are a lot of interesting APIs and kernel features that really do improve system performance and make it easier to write for Windows" Many of them even work on older computers, and I doubt these features are why Vista is bloated. That is why I suggested trimming down Vista once.

Improve Old Application Disk Performance

Feb 15, 2007

Do you have old programs that have slow disk performance on Windows Vista or Windows 7? If so, you can squeeze a little more performance out of your hard disk by enabling what I call compatibility mode for your file system.  This speeds up the performance of your hard disk by changing how write caching works. However, if your computer is not connected to a battery backup and you loose power you have a increased risk for data loss or corruption. If you have a laptop your chances are data loss or corruption are dramatically less since your laptop battery will kick on if your power source is lost. Let's get started: ....

Improve Sync Performance In ITunes For Windows

Aug 23, 2010

On my PC the longest part of the sync process in iTunes with my iPhone or iPad is the device backup. Taking up to an hour at times I can live without a backup. Especially since I jailbreak my devices which makes ever restoring a backup after an OS upgrade a bad idea.

There are two methods to disable the device backup feature. First, I'm going to show you the manual tweak....

How To Increase System System Performance

Jun 10, 2009

I thought I would share this with you all, a few little tricks to boost Windows performance. If you have a spare USB flash drive or you are willing to get a cheap say 1GB flash drive. First we plug in the flash drive. Go to Disk Manager and assign it a drive letter, like Z: (this is just to get it out of the way and optional). Go to Advanced system settings, Evironment variables. Change the Temp variable under User to Z: (I didn't see any point creating folders, but that's optional). Change the Temp variable under System variable to Z:

This will cut down on I/O traffic to the hard drive. Starting an app like Word, would cause the HD to read the program into memory while at the same time writing into the drive, temporary files. This causes an I/O queue to form and degrade Windows performance. By off loading some of the I/O traffic to another storage device, the hard drive read/write head doesn't have to move around as much either. All performance gains.

Another trick I tried was moving Windows Search Index to a flash drive, but it won't let me select even a 16GB flash drive. Even though the Index doesn't grow beyond 1GB. It's max size seems to be just under 1GB. You can move to it to a removable drive, though. I rebuilt the Index on an external 500GB USB drive. Again, this cuts down I/O traffic to the internal hard drive..........

Did Not Make Any Partitions System Drive

May 14, 2009

I just got my new build up and running late last night and during Vista installation, I did not make any partitions to my main system drive. I would like to make a couple, maybe one for Windows and programs and one for dedicated swap space. My main question is do you think it would be best just to reinstall windows and do it from there? Or just as good to use Disk Management to do it?

Windows Vista And Make Sure That System Boots

Apr 21, 2008

A long time ago I installed an evaluation version of Windows Vista on the second partition of my pc, next to my installation of Windows XP (dual boot partition C and L). The evaluation period has long since expired and I am no longer using Vista. However, all the files are still present on my second partition, and every time I start my pc, the boot menu will come up. What do I need to do to completely remove all the files that belong to Windows Vista and make sure that my system boots straight into Windows XP,without stopping for the boot menu?

Thunking Spooler APIS . Stopped Working

May 20, 2008

I've been printing from various apps without any problems since I purchased my PC in January. I started getting the error message " Thunking Spooler APIS from 32 to 64 process has stopped working" last Friday. It happens when I open Word 2007, and when I try to print in any other app including Notepad.

My OS is Vista 64 Home Premium with SP1. My printer is an Epson DX5050 and I have re-installed the latest drivers from Epson. The only changes I am aware of are various automatic updates which came out last week including Office 2007 SP1. I have tried a restore prior to last weeks updates but no difference.

Spooler APIS From 32 To 64 Bit Process Has Stopped Working

May 25, 2009

i have plug in my HP laserJet 1010 into my laptop's usb port. I have even download the HP vistax64 driver for this particular printer. But the problem arise when i want to set printing preference for this printer. There will be an error and windows explorer will restart itself. But the problem is the printer can print out my document but do not allow me setup the print. Is it due to the vistax64 driver issue? Is there a workaround like installing the driver for Vista x86 instead? will there be any issue? To add on to my above problem, I get this error "Thunking Spooler APIS from 32 to 64 bit process has stopped working", when i tried to click on properties of the printer.

Could Not Initialize AVG Kernel Interface

Jun 9, 2008

HP Desktop (1 year old) Vista Home Premium 32 bit SP1. Had AVG 7.5 for about six months (with email scan disabled). AVG offerred Version 8 and I allowed it to download and install. Big mistake!! Gave me nothing but trouble. When I tried to uninstall it, I realized it wasn't listed in Install/Uninstall. But I saw that AVG had an Uninstall as part of their program....so I used it. (My second mistake!)

Now, whenever I start up.....a window appears: "AVG Anti-Virus System. Could not initialize AVG Anti-Virus kernel interface." How can I get rid of this window? It doesn't cause trouble...but I hate seeing it everytime I start the computer. As you can guess...I'm not a Guru...just a user..so please try to keep it simple...if possible.

It tells me to insert my installation disc and restart your computer however when I do that I go right back to the previous screen which I just described. I already changed the boot order to boot from the DVD drive first however it continues to skip this screen and keeps looping to the same screen. Does anyone know another way to load my disc so I can continue with the repair?.

Improve File Transfers

Apr 13, 2008

You try to copy a folder. It says, not necessarily at the beginning, "Do you want to merge these folders?" It should check for mergeable folders at the start of the transfer. About five minutes later, when it comes to a duplicate file, it says "Do you want to replace $File1 with $File2?" Again, it should check for ALL of these criteria before moving/copying anything, right at the beginning. I usually copy a multi-GB folder and leave for a while after clicking "Yes to all" on a prompt. I come back later to find that my files have not yet copied and there is yet another prompt. In conclusion, when I move a file, it will make the "done" sound, but then wait at the end of the loading bar for a few seconds. MS, please hear my cries and fix this. Remember to vote for this suggestion if you agree................

System Restore Not Working: Unable To Make A Restore Point

Apr 11, 2008

I have a recent problem installing Windows updates on Vista Ultimate as the update process stays on 'creating restore point' forever. I've let it run as long as 7 hours in this state, with no change. It looks like the system is unable to make a restore point sucessfully. I know it has worked in the past, as I'm fairly up-to-date on Windows updates. Reading some other threads, I've tried using Disk Clean-up to remove all by the most recent restore points, and then try to disable/re-enable system restore - this part without success. When I check the system properties for System Restore, the System Restore button is greyed out. I've attached a screenshot of the screen for reference. I've checked the group policies to verify the System Restore is not disabled there.
