Ejecting USB Mass Storage Drive

Mar 29, 2008

This is really mysterious. I have an external 2.5" USB drive and for god's sake I cannot safely remove it from my Vista ultimate 64bit system! I copied something on it and I am quite sure, that safely remove is good to do, because I use such drives for some time already and I already lost some files when it was not done (my computer froze something)! Process explorer shows nothing when I search for my drive letter. I tried some unlocker utility, but it does not make it's context menu.maybe after restart it will :- I disabled indexing for fast search on this drive, but nothing changed.Maybe system restore?.

64 No Boot If Storage Drive Attached

Mar 23, 2008

I have a "storage" drive (seagate sata 3.0gb, 320gb) with lots of files which was previously used (as a storage drive) with my xp pro 32 install, and after that, with my linux system via fuse+ntfs-3g. This drive is mountable in linux still, and all files appear to be intact. I would like to share this storage drive between my dual boot Vista
Ultimate/Debian Etch (both 64) system, but if it is connected while trying to boot vista, vista will stop after the "loading" screen, and rest eternally on a black screen, before any welcome logo or logon screen.Without this drive connected, vista boots fine. Without my linux drive connected, and with the storage drive connected, vista still will not boot. Vista even sees my linux drive and all its partitions, but will not boot
with the storage drive attached. I've tried booting and *then* connecting the drive, but it doesn't show up anywhere at all (my computer, device manager, disk management).I've searched EVERYWHERE for the last several months (ever since i bought vista near the end of september '07) and have found absolutely Zero clues as to why this is happening or how to fix it.

Available Storage For Distributed Backup?

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to enable secure nightly backups to remote computers that are behind a firewall? Here's the scenario. Each member of my family owns at least one computer. We all have broadband access and plenty of available storage on our PC's. It would be really nice if we could leverage all of this available storage for a true backup solution in different locations.

Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device

Problem ejecting USB Mass Storage Device - My Drive M: See my System Specs. I have just finished a session between my C: and M: Drives, well at least I thought so. When I tried to Safely Remove Hardware, I get the following Error window;

Questions;
Is there a way or shortcut that I can use to find which programs or windows are still using the Drive? Will potential problems result if I just do a 'hard' close-down?, ie >Start>Switch Off button ='Closes all open Programs, Shuts down Windows, turns off Computer'. Will the same apply if I do a >Start>Restart, close-down and restart procedure? I have attempted to Safely Remove Drive M: via the Icon in the Notification Tray, and through Device Manager, but the results as shown above are the same. Email Storage Stop This By Vista

Feb 4, 2010

I rarely want to save an email. When I do, I drag it into the "drafts" folder. Meanwhile, Vista is saving every email I have received since I bought this computer and went online. Why? I don't want them. I delete them after reading every day, even using the "shift-delete" permanent(?) method. Yet all the emails are stored in some "indexed location", taking up space. how to stop this constant storage by Vista? I have tried to delete the old emails but they never go away.

USB Storage: Cannot Open Copied Files

I'm trying to use a 4G USB storage for transferring files from an XP platform to a Vista platform. I'm finding something very funny. I copy the files to the storage (and I can see and open them on the XP machine). Than I put the USB storage on the Vista machine. I can see again the files but I cannot open them (the files seem to be corrupted). Finally I put the USB storage on the XP and I see that the files are corrupted. It looks like Vista has corrupted my files. I'm using the same USB storage for transferring files between XP machines without any problem.

Storage Device : Reach My Backups

May 4, 2009

My desktop with WinXP installed seriously crashed. I had backed up all on a Seagate Free Agent storage device. I started using my laptop, with Vista Home Premium installed, for all my computer projects. I had backed these up but when I added the storage device to the laptop it told me I would have to format the drive before I could use it with the laptop. Of course, then all my backups would be lost. How can I get around this in order to install and/or reach my backups from the storage device to the laptop. I thought I'd be able to carry these backups from computer to computer but I find that is not the case.

Not Enough Server Storage Process Command

May 11, 2008

I have Vista Ultimate 64-bit computer as a server for home network. The clients are mixed Vista (Ultimate) 64-bit and XP (Professional) 32-bit computers. After installing Vista SP1 the Vista server reliability has gone bad for XP clients. When I use one of the Vista server disk shares from XP client heavily, the connection does down and I get "Not enough server storage is available to process this command" and/or "System error 58" in the client side. Vista server event viewer shows these error messages soon after the problems:- The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the pool was empty (system log / source srv / event ID 219)

The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the server reached the configured limit for nonpaged pool allocations (system log / source srv / event ID 2017) The server was unable to allocate a work item 43419 times in the last 60 seconds (system log / source srv / event ID 2021)this is a warning only The funny thing is that I can continue to use the same disk share from Vista client, but to be able to use the server again from the XP client I need to reboot the Vista server (no actions needed in the XP client side)....

Why Few Restore Points - Relies On Shadow Storage

Mar 23, 2008

it's a completely idiotic feature of Vista Home Premium (and maybe Basic too) System Restore relies on Shadow Storage - which MS also uses to provide "previous version" file capabilities in higher-end Vista systems. However, Vista is in fact still taking copies of ALL your files - thereby eating up space that you might reasonably have thought was solely for System Restore points. Result: ShadowStorage fills up very quickly and your restore points are dumped.

System Recovery Left Almost No Storage Space!

Apr 7, 2008

I previously had a problem on my Gateway Laptop Computer - Gateway Core2 Duo Centrino, that came pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Premium, which I could not fix. I had to do a System Recovery using the on-screen program and did not back up any of my files, in attempt to clear out everything that I had on the computer. After I completed this process, I set up my desktop and internet, and started over. When reviewing my Hard Disk Drives on my "Computer" menu, I notice that my C: Drive is almost all the way full (8.55 GB free of 139 GB).

Although I downloaded a few programs and set up my Internet Security, I am sure I did not install anything large enough to use up almost all of the computers storage space for programs and files. By doing the System Recovery I thought that it would erase everything so that my computer would be back to it's factory condition. Could my previous files still be in the computer? After searching this forum, I did not find any information on the specific question that convinsed me of the soultion,
or a course of action.

I created a restore point and went into the System Tools menu and attempted the disk cleanup on the recovery drive C: where Windows Vista is stored and then cleaned up the up the Shadow Copies, and nothing helped. I went through many windows folders and found nothing that would amount to the vast amount of space that is apparently taken up.

External Storage Device: File Backup

Mar 31, 2010

I occasionally (every 3 months) back up my hard drives (I am using three computers, all similarly configured) to an external storage device. I tend to back up the My Documents folders somewhat more frequently (monthly). My two desktops are Vista 64s, and the laptop is a Vista 32-bit. I use the laptop as the master, so to speak, and will occasionally update the My Documents folders of the desktops from this machine.

I sometimes overwrite the same file on the desktops with an older file from the laptop. What I would really like is an easy to use piece of software that updates a file only if it is newer (later time stamp) than what is being updated. This would run much more quickly, and also prevent me from overwriting newer files.
