View 9 RepliesProblem ejecting USB Mass Storage Device - My Drive M: See my System Specs. I have just finished a session between my C: and M: Drives, well at least I thought so. When I tried to Safely Remove Hardware, I get the following Error window;
Questions;
Is there a way or shortcut that I can use to find which programs or windows are still using the Drive? Will potential problems result if I just do a 'hard' close-down?, ie >Start>Switch Off button ='Closes all open Programs, Shuts down Windows, turns off Computer'. Will the same apply if I do a >Start>Restart, close-down and restart procedure? I have attempted to Safely Remove Drive M: via the Icon in the Notification Tray, and through Device Manager, but the results as shown above are the same. I have a USB mass storage device, and it takes vista around 30 minutes to recognize the two partitions (one is a 64 MB FAT32 partition and the other is a 111 GB FAT32 partition). On my old slow computer, XP will recognize the drive partitions within seconds. Is there some setting I need to change in vista to get this to work correctly? This is a drive for a digital music player, and I've tried different drives, so I know the drive itself isn't the problem.

When I check on it, the message is that there is no driver and it is not working properly because it has a problem. I tried searching for a driver with no luck. View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is really mysterious. I have an external 2.5" USB drive and for god's sake I cannot safely remove it from my Vista ultimate 64bit system! I copied something on it and I am quite sure, that safely remove is good to do, because I use such drives for some time already and I already lost some files when it was not done (my computer froze something)! Process explorer shows nothing when I search for my drive letter. I tried some unlocker utility, but it does not make it's context menu.maybe after restart it will :- I disabled indexing for fast search on this drive, but nothing changed.Maybe system restore?.
I am looking for some network storage device. I was looking into the Hp media smart server but too expensive. Some thing that can be accessed independently from each PC on the network.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy desktop with WinXP installed seriously crashed. I had backed up all on a Seagate Free Agent storage device. I started using my laptop, with Vista Home Premium installed, for all my computer projects. I had backed these up but when I added the storage device to the laptop it told me I would have to format the drive before I could use it with the laptop. Of course, then all my backups would be lost. How can I get around this in order to install and/or reach my backups from the storage device to the laptop. I thought I'd be able to carry these backups from computer to computer but I find that is not the case.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI occasionally (every 3 months) back up my hard drives (I am using three computers, all similarly configured) to an external storage device. I tend to back up the My Documents folders somewhat more frequently (monthly). My two desktops are Vista 64s, and the laptop is a Vista 32-bit. I use the laptop as the master, so to speak, and will occasionally update the My Documents folders of the desktops from this machine.
I sometimes overwrite the same file on the desktops with an older file from the laptop. What I would really like is an easy to use piece of software that updates a file only if it is newer (later time stamp) than what is being updated. This would run much more quickly, and also prevent me from overwriting newer files.
In the corporate world, a lot of time is spent on locking down computers to minimize the risk of confidential information leaving the company. With the popularity of USB storage devices in recent years the problem for large corporations has exploded. Almost all users want to use USB storage devices to move data around. With the size of USB storage devices increasing so much in recent years, the risk is increasing as more and more data could possibly be stolen or lost accidentally. In companies, USB storage devices have been banned completely and disabled from use on company computers.
In Windows Vista there is an alternative that will allow your corporate users to be able to read from USB storage devices but not write any data to them. Effectively turning on USB storage devices for all users but making them read-only. This way users can still read information off of USB storage devices that a third-party vendor may provide data on while preventing the employee from writing any data back to the storage device.
To setup read only USB storage device operation, follow these steps below:
Click on the Start Button and type in Regedit and hit Enter.
Navigate through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControl.
Right click on Control and select New and then Key. Call the new key StorageDevicePolicies.
Right click on StorageDevicePolicies and select New and then Dword. Call the new dword WriteProtect...
Are SATA and SATA2 like what USB1.1 and USB2.0 used to be? I mean does the motherboard have to support SATA2 even though you already have SATA connectors on the motherboard? If not and one wanted to install a SATA2 harddrive on their computer, would you have to do a motherboard BIOS update? Or would you have to by a seperate card for SATA2, like I had to buy a seperate USB2.0 card with my old computer? And my last question: Is there a setting in say Device Manager to tell if your motherboard does support SATA2?

Meanwhile, Vista is saving every email I have received since I bought this computer and went online. Why? I don't want them. I delete them after reading every day, even using the "shift-delete" permanent(?) method. Yet all the emails are stored in some "indexed location", taking up space. how to stop this constant storage by Vista? I have tried to delete the old emails but they never go away.

View 6 Replies View RelatedNew to Vista and want to repartition the drive in my HP machine to utilize a C, D and E partition (OS, Data, 3rd party software). Partition Magic does not support Vista. Looking at the Disk Management in Vista, It looks like I can shorten the
current drive and add new partitions. The new partitions are Primary Partitions, not Extended as in XP. Is this the correct thing to do in Vista and create multiple Primary Partitions on the disk? I assume if I add a second disk drive it could also contain multiple Primary Partitions.
I have what amounts to a minor problem with my Help and support, but I would like to find out the cause of the problem (was it something I did) and fix it. The problem is best illustrated, so I have attached a screen capture of a typical Help and support dialog box. As illustrated, each discussion point has a red X on the selection button (sorry, do not know the proper term for this). works fine but the image or icon on each button is gone and only a red X remains.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running Vista 64 on an AMD 64 Platform. I have the above printer. When I download drivers from Canon's website they are only Intel compatible. Yes, I have looked and re-looked and I'm sure. Canon does not support AMD 64/ Vista 64 for their Drivers (yet). I have tried to go through Device Manager, and there is no printer listed. I have tried to Add Hardware and I get "Restart Printer Spooler". I re-start printer spooler. Still no go. This may seem like a basic question. The Vista Disc, when installed does not have a repair feature like the old XP. How can I get the default printer driver off the disk?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a new PC that has the Windows Vista Home preloaded on it. It has no 3.5 floppy drive which I need as my family history files are all stored on floppy discs. I bought an external floppy disc drive, it installed ok, but will not read or open the data on the floppy discs. I get the message "too many arguments." I can't view any jpeg files from my floppy discs as I receive the message "Vista photo viewer does not support this file." My saved text Word documents on the floppy disc will not open either, I get the message that the files are corrupt. Also, when I insert the floppy disc into the external drive, I am instructed to Format the disc before using. I just want the external drive to read the data!!

Hmpf....question, did it send to all the ok addresses? or is it waiting for me to delete the bad ones one at a time as it shows them to me?

View 9 Replies View Relatedi have installed the correct driver for this belkin bluetooth usb dongle model: F8T012XX1 but in device manager, it has the belkin device and microsoft bluetooth enumerator, which is great. but when u get further down the list. it has a tab named "other devices" and then a subtab with "bluetooth peripheral device" which has an exclemation mark on it. i have searched for driver software using the update service but it cant find no update. i have looked for the name of the manufacturer but found nothing.i then disabled the unknown device, and sent a picture to my mobile phone. which confirmed that it was not the belkin bluetooth device. so i uninstalled the unknown device, restarted the computer. then when i logged in, it said that it had found a new device and wanted me to find the CD that came with it.

I'm having a curious problem: Yesterday I plugged into the machine the dongle of my wireless logitech mouse, and for some reason the machine said "Your unknown device is ready to use" (my OS is in spanish, the messages may not be accurately translated). Since then, an annoying message pops every few seconds warning about an "unrecognized USB device", that "didn't work as expected". The best part is this, if I click on the tray icon, sometimes the informative dialog window is emply, an other times shows all the USB ports in the system plus one extra with a "unknown UBS device", even without any device plugged into the system. I've tryed removing the unknown device from the device manager, but it shows up again.
