I've searched everywhere looking for the fix to the "Local Only" network problem. I've had it a couple days and can't find why I can't get through to the internet. I have disabled IPv6 and tried static ip which I don't think works with my router and some registry fixes and cmd commands. I'm connected through Ethernet wire so it's not a wireless thing. I don't know if I should switch back to XP Pro or maybe buy a new network card. .....The first is if I set my ip static and the second without it. It seems that if I don't set my ip static then it does not find the router and only finds unidentified network while if I set my ip static it does but I don't believe my router works with setting static ip from the computer. I can also see the other computers linked into my router but just can't access the internet making me believe it is something with the compatibility with the router and Vista. Okay here it is, this is all without IPv6.

I installed sp1 last night and this morning my internet was gone, the network controller on my machine couldn't find any connections, though the control panel insists the device and the driver are working correctly. I just uninstalled sp1 and got back my connection. I'd done the install hoping it would fix a problem that just started happening: Vista no longer recognizes software CD. Up until a few weeks ago, if I inserted a CD containing software (e.g. adobe CS2), the autoplay brought up the start menu. It not only no longer brings up the start menu, but when I click on the cd/dvd drive in explorer, it asks me how I want to format it. Nero's info tool reads and determines that the disc contains the software I want to install, but vista can't get to it. The only plus side of sp1 was that it correctly reports how much RAM I have installed, instead of 2.93 as it did prior to sp1. Any idea how to install software now that Vista no longer recognizes software media?
I started to have problems with Local Area Connection in Vista, during logon there was two networks identified, one that I had set up and one unrecognized. This was a problem, because it disrupted the DHCP discovery. I have read here that many have the same problem, but so far haven't been able to pinpoint the cause. My solution was to try to disable the network connection and enable it. This seemed to work sometimes, but once I rebooted the machine, the whole network adapter had disappeared from device manager. I tried re-installing the driver but Vista doesn't seem to recognize it. How do I get Vista to install it back?
Ive just had broadband connected to my house. Currently I have a network consisting of four computers connected through an internal switch on one of my computers in one of the bedrooms for ease of cabling. The computer with the broadband modem has been chosen as it is newest and is closest to the telephone line socket. It has two network cards, one connected to the modem and the other to the rest of the network. Independantly, the network connections are running fine (all computers can see each other and transfer data properly) and the internet connection is working well for the computer connected directly to the modem.
The network is setup using Static IP Addresses 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.4 (With 0.1 being for the host) and the modem is connected using a different set of IP addresses. I have also set the internet connection sharing options according to what is required on the microsoft website for both the internet host and clients. I have both Norton Antivirus and Zonealarm activated on all computers but have set them up to allow access to each other. My problem therefore is, despite my broadband connection working on the one computer, and my network connections working, I cannot get ICS to work.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 with Windows Vista I'm trying to connect to some unsecure wireless networks at a friend's house for the first time and am only able to connect with local access. I try diagnose and repair and it says that there are no issues. Three other computers are connecting to the internet just fine. They signal is good, and there is supposedly data being sent and received but no programs will connect to the internet. This issue has never happened before. I regularly run a registry cleaner and tried restoring to a backup from a couple days ago and that didn't help.
Recently built out of spare parts and some new parts a Media Center PC. Loaded Vista Ultimate X64 on the box and have it hard wired to my network. Issue is limited connection on my network and no internet connection. All was working great until SP1 was installed. Since then I can not access the internet, ping my router or see my WHS or my wifes XP Pro laptop, but I can see and access my daughters laptop running Vista Home Premium and my laptop running Windows 7 RC1.
I have tired to disable IPv6 both through the proprieties on my nick and through the registry, no effect. Tried netsh winsock reset, no effect, also when I go into network settings network discovery is turned off, I enable it with no effect, next reboot it is off again. I saw a post about putting local services group in the administrators group, no effect. I have a D-Link DI524 router my MC PC is showing up in the assigned IP tables, the IP that is returned when I do an ipconfig matches the one issued by the router. As I stated before I had NO network connection issues until SP1 was installed. Is my only option to un-install or remove SP1, is that even possible?
I have Vista home basic 32bit And I am connected to DSL via ethernet (wired). About a week ago I stared having a issue that my browsers would stop working(both firefox and internet explorer)I would get the typical error saying the connection has been reset. My modem was showing that I am connected tho.
At the same time my AIM messenger was working fine I was still connected and able to send and receive messages.I tried to reset my modem that didn't work.So I restarted my pc and that seemed to fix it. This has continued to happen daily now usually around the same timeframe too.
I have scanned my pc with avast, super anti spyware and malwarebytes and they haven't found anything wrong.I tried disabling my firewal (pc tools firewalls plus) that didn't work.I read that zonealarm could cause this issue and i had it in the past but it's been long uninstalled. The last thing i tried was i disabled avast web scanner and i reset the TCP/IP Winsock. And again it didn't work.
I recently bought a new Linksys router ultra range plus. it can broadcast on n, g and b bands. My laptop has a "g" adapter. but after setting up the router i tried to connect to the router and only get "Local" connection. DHCP is enabled in my router but the "ipconfig /all" command on the laptop says it isnt. My room mates connect fine, one has a Mac and one has an HP running vista (not sure the version). When i connect via ethernet the internet works just fine. im leaning towards an adapter problem but im no pro in this field. iv updated the adapter drivers to the latest update (attempting to solve the problem).
I'm using Vista on a HP Pavilion laptop and i'm having some problems with my internet connection. I know very little about computers and so struggle to follow much of the advice on these forums! I'm trying to connect using an ethernet connection so it's not a problem with the wireless. The network and sharing centre shows that i'm connected to an unidentified local network but it isn't connecting through to the internet.
I am the manager of my network at my house and i have set up my router with an encryption key i can remember. My mom just got a new laptop and we can not connect to it because i FORGOT THE KEY! My computer is wired directly to the router. I went to my IP address and wouldnt you know it, i forgot the login info! I can reset the router from the router itself, but it took me a while to set it up. Is there any way i can get around my login since i am directly connected?
Whenever I do an ipconfig I get a bunch of connections that are not active. It lists my active connections, but then I get a whole series of these: Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection* 6:
Media State ....... . : Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection* 7: Media State . . . .. : Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
They don't seem to be causing any harm and the only downside is that I sometimes have to scroll around to find the connection that is active. What are these?
i used advanced vista optimiser to give my laptop a good clean out as i do every week. but this time when i went to log on the diagnostic comes and says either change proxy settings or try resetting local connection setting. i tried resetting many a time which as done no good. web address bar states where its going but the diag box comes on again.so in the mean time while this is all going on a new tab keeps on opening by its self and saying the same thing, this started to happen before i cleaned my l.p but it was just redirecting to a blank page.
that is why i did the clean.anyhow resetting the lan did not work so i reset the internet expolorer in the tools on the bar. which as worked but the same thing is still happening with the tab ,but now its redirecting to all the freebiee sites and it will not stop. i have spyware-adware-trojan software on my l.p and still no good it did pick up 3 infections which it sorted out, its driving me f*&^%*ng nuts:mad::mad:
I'm posting this from another laptop using the same router. It seems this is a common problem without any certain resolution. I've tried most of the plentiful suggestions on the web without success. I obviously don't want to flatten the laptop and re-load just to get internet access back.
I have two computers at home, both using XP, both directly connected to the speedtouch modem/router (it only has two network slots). My friend just bought a notebook, an Asus F3K. Since he only got Vista drivers with it, we installed Vista Ultimate. Everything went as planned, and it all works ... but the network connection. At first I connected it using my first computer's cable. It says "local only". Now the fun part ... I went to my second computer and connected the laptop to the network using this computer's cable ... and it suddenly worked fine.
But, even though ... both XP computers run fine and have no network problems, as long as I don't use one of their cables to connect the laptop. It's an Asus F3K as I said, using a RealTek network card. I unticked the IPv6 in the network connection properties, and I followed the "additional information". My friend also tried to connect it at home, but he got "local only" as well. We both use the same internet provider and have the same modem/router. Also, when Vista starts solving the problem it identifies the modem/router to be the problem ... but both modems work fine if we use XP. Using XP on my friend's computer is not an option at the time, since all of the supplied drivers and applications are Vista only.
i just got a new PC last friday with 64bit vista ultimate and i have been having alot of problems with hooking it up to my home network. At first, i would plug it in and it would only let me get into "local area connection" local access only. I did a repair install which got rid of all updates that the company had put on, so its a fresh SP1 install. Now i can sometimes get it to connect to the internet, but the speed is ridiculously slow, like if i look at the antivirus updaters for speed (i cant access speedtest.net cuz it says i dont have flash or w.e. and it wont let me download it cuz the site wont load) i get max speeds of...4 kb/s.
My laptop is connected to a NetGear router, and has been for over a year with no problems. I went on vacation and used another network for a week and when I came back I can no longer connect to the internet with my home network. I am connected to the network, but it says 'Local Only'. If I disconnect and reconnect again, it will tell me I have an internet connection, but as soon as I try to access a web page with my browser, it drops the connection. I CAN connect via ethernet cable with no problems, and no other computers on the network are having any issues. I've tried resetting the network adapter, uninstalled my antivirus, tried disabling my firewall, updated my wireless network adapter driver.
I was online yesterday all day. I put my rig to sleep last night. It powered off during the night. I turn it on this afternoon. No internet access. Every other XP machine is online fine, wireless and wired. I have tried just about every fix I have seen:
Disable DHCP Flags no firewalls blah, blah, blah. Restarted router, modem, car, dog, etc.
What can I do or try? A list would be nice. A chatting support option would be nice. A little instant messenger like device with a tech on the other end.
A month ago I started to notice that when I went to bed at night on a Monday night the computer was fine and connected to the internet. When I got up Tuesday morning the first thing that I noticed was that the CPU usage, via the CPU usage gadget on the desktop, 4 core, was running up and down between 27% and 59%. While running it would allow me to do vitually nothing. The next thing I noticed was that I was disconnected from the WAN & Lan and it would not allow me to neither connect or troubleshoot. In order to get my computer back I had to do a restart. Two weeks ago the problem changed from a Tuesday morning to Saturday morning but the identical scenerio. What I was able to identify is that the problem is from, via services, "Svchostexe", of which there are 15 of them running. The indivdual services showed: WSCSVC; IMHosts; Event Log; DHCP; AudioSRV: In order to retake control I had to do the restart but this time when it restarted it showed that I was connected to an unidentified network. Reset the modem/router and all was fine. This Saturday morning, same thing with the with the cpu usage meter and internet connection dropped. Under Services it was showing AVgaurd.exe 32 - Antivirus on Access Service and the svchost.exe - System host Process for windows service; when I open subprocess services it is showing 11 of them: wudfsvc; wdi system host; Ursms; PCA Svc; Netman; Irman; IPBus Enum; hidserv; EMDmgmt; AudioEndPointBuilder; Thes are showing "Local System Network Restricted" next to them all the while when "Running" , evan after a restart these are still running so I am presuming that they are legit.I admit by some of the names of the services it looks like a rootkit or zombie programs but everything that I throw at the C drive comes back negative including Eset and Fsecure. I have no services scheduled to run at this time of the day. This time a restart brought everything up fine. Are these legit MS OS programs; Don't know that is why I am asking as to which direction to go.While my computer is showing disconnect from the network the router light is still blinking indicating activaty. Daughters computer running XP and running thru the same router/modem is fine.
I really don't like Vista and have had nothing but trouble getting it connected. I tried connecting it wirelessly to my AirPort wireless and it would connect and could see everything on the network including the gateway, but would go no further.
I then tried a wired connection using all the same numbers (except the last one) that I have on my other desktops at home (3 XPs and 1 2000). Again, it sees the local network fine but will not go out the gateway. Cannot ping the DNS servers. I know it isn't the wire. I plug it directly back in my computer and it works fine. The route print looks fine (except for all the On-links under the Gateway). I tried uninstalling the Norton Internet Security to see if that was a problem and making sure the Microsoft Firewall was off. Still can't get out of the local network. I never had this kind of problem with my XPs.
I've been struggling for a while to be able to share files between my new Vista (x64) desktop and my laptop. When I click "View full map" on the Vista desktop, I do see the laptop (hurrah!) but it refuses to appear in the Network and Sharing Center, or in any of the browsing lists when I try to map a drive to a shared folder. (Right-clicking on the laptop icon in the full map does nothing.)
I'm aware that this is quite a common issue and i apologize if it's been repeated hundeds of times, but it's driving me crazy. I have an acer 8920g laptop with an atheros AR8121 pci-e ethernet network card. On my older laptop, the internet connects fine via cable modem and an ethernet cable (this has a broadcom network card). On the newer laptop i just seem to get local access only, with a 169.x.x IP address, no default gateway or DNS server addresses. Both laptops run vista home premium, and i'm totally lost and confused as to where it's going wrong.. Ive been searching a few sites and there doesnt seem to be any definitive answer to this problem. Does anyone know how to fix this before i throw my laptop out of the window?
I have scrolled through pages and pages of posts here and tried to find my solution. I must repost this issue for me. I had this issue after building my rig and it miraculously fixed itself one day when I powered the computer on. It worked for a few months. Then I inadvertantly put my computer into hibernation or sleep, instead of powering it off, like I normally do. Vista didn't like that. So now I am offline again.............
I originally posted this 6-24 on only the Vista Printer_fax_scan NG with no response. Multiposted now to broaden the range of people seeing the post. Really need assistance. TIA.
I have a laptop (new HP) with Vista Home Premium SP1 preinstalled, 3 GB RAM,250GB HDD, AMD Turion 64 processor. Using Zone Alarm free as firewall and AVG 8 free as antivirus. Know that firewall is not issue since have full access to printers (can ping the network connected printers) and all other networked computers without problem. I understand that AVG has had a printing issue in the past but I totally turned off AVG by uninstalling itand this did not clear the issue with printing.
Out of the box I have connected the new laptop to the following printers using the latest drivers available from the manufacturers or using Vista's built in if the drivers aren't available from manufacturer's web site.
The following are connected through the home network via wireless and work flawlessly with 3 laptops running XP Pro (2) and XP Home (1).HP 2200DN - B & W Laser (network with Cat5e cable through WAP/Switch) OKIDATA 5150 - Color laser (network with Cat5e cable through WAP/Switch)Epson 1280 (connected through a Sony XP computer share) Epson R260 (also connected through the Sony XP computer)
The last printer is a Canon BJC80 which is connected via a USB to Parallel printer cable (Belkin) which works great with no delay on any of the laptops running XP.
I can't connect my laptop (Vista home premium 32 with wireless connection) and Desktop (XP professional with cable ethernet connection ) in local network through wireless router D-Link (DI-524). Please help.
I can't log into my computer by normal mode, safe mode and safe mode with network. This started when i log into my computer and start a game and attempt to connect to my BroadBand connection. While connecting, my Local Area Network is undentified so i restart my computer and i can't log in till now.
The network icon shows access Local Only. The network and sharing center shows a red X to the internet. However, I have internet access. It's just reporting that I don't. This is intermittent. Sometimes rebooting solves the issue but the Local Only icon can come back shortly afterwards.
Can I use Windows live messenger on vista to connect to my local LCS (live communication server 2005 sp1)? If so, how? I am unable to use windows messenger 5.1 on vista clients in my local network. What is the solution?? I am using windows messenger 5.1 on XP clients without any problems to speak to LCS 2005 SP1 without any issues.
I'm trying to start a local tftp server session using SolarWinds or WinAgents TFTP Server Manger. However I keep getting the following messages: "WinAgents TFTP Server can not bind to UDP port 69 on one of local network interfaces. Probably, the port is used by other application. Please stop other software running on UDP port 69 and restart WinAgenst TFTP Server" or "SolarWinds UPD port 69 is currently used by another process: TftpService" When I tried to identify the program using UDP port 69 using the netstat -anb command I can't find anything that indicates that this port is in use. Has anybody encountered this problem I neee to use TFTP to copy an IOS from my laptop to a Cisco 2600 router.
I have with Vista and an ad-hoc peer-to-peer wired network. When I run the wizard to connect to a network, it does not show the add ad-hoc network option, only four others for wireles, internet and vpn connection. Also, although I have networked two PC's both running Vista, I cannot ping the second machine from the first and vice versa despite having added routes to both machines. nslookup recognises the ip address of each machine, as does tracert(I should point out that both machines obtain their iP addresses from a router which also allows access to the internet. Both machines can see the internet).
I bought a Vista back in 2007 and the internet has been working great until recently. I got a rogue on my laptop and ever since I only get local access. I've been googling this thing for around 3 ~ 4 days now and I've tried just about everything I've come across and nothing seems to be working. It says I'm connected to the router with excellent signal strength but then it says the router isn't connected to the internet and I'm sure that's not the issue because the computer I'm typing this on is connected to the router fine and it's a Vista as well so I'm sure it's not a router-Vista compatibility issue.
I've tried .. - disabling IPv6 - updating drivers (there were no updates) - multiple scans - disabling firewall - uninstalling norton (with the removal tool download) - deleting my router profile and trying to connect again - connect via ethernet cord (doesn't work)
When I do IPCONFIG /ALL, I get .. I've tried manually putting in the IP stuff, but I didn't know the gateway and DNS details so I couldn't really do it.
** I DONT have the reformat disks. When I bought the laptop they didn't provide me with one and when we asked for one they said they'd send us one but never did. Now they're closed (nationally) and I'm not sure as to where I could get one...................
