Local Access Only, Unidentified Network: Disabling IPv6, Updating Drivers (there Were No Updates)

Jul 29, 2009

I bought a Vista back in 2007 and the internet has been working great until recently. I got a rogue on my laptop and ever since I only get local access. I've been googling this thing for around 3 ~ 4 days now and I've tried just about everything I've come across and nothing seems to be working. It says I'm connected to the router with excellent signal strength but then it says the router isn't connected to the internet and I'm sure that's not the issue because the computer I'm typing this on is connected to the router fine and it's a Vista as well so I'm sure it's not a router-Vista compatibility issue.

I've tried ..
- disabling IPv6
- updating drivers (there were no updates)
- multiple scans
- disabling firewall
- uninstalling norton (with the removal tool download)
- deleting my router profile and trying to connect again
- connect via ethernet cord (doesn't work)

When I do IPCONFIG /ALL, I get .. I've tried manually putting in the IP stuff, but I didn't know the gateway and DNS details so I couldn't really do it.

** I DONT have the reformat disks. When I bought the laptop they didn't provide me with one and when we asked for one they said they'd send us one but never did. Now they're closed (nationally) and I'm not sure as to where I could get one...................

Unidentified Network / Access: Local Only

Mar 23, 2008

I was online yesterday all day. I put my rig to sleep last night. It powered off during the night. I turn it on this afternoon. No internet access. Every other XP machine is online fine, wireless and wired. I have tried just about every fix I have seen:

Disable DHCP Flags
no firewalls
blah, blah, blah.
Restarted router, modem, car, dog, etc.

What can I do or try? A list would be nice. A chatting support option would be nice. A little instant messenger like device with a tech on the other end.

Unidentified Network: Local Access

Oct 8, 2009

I'm aware that this is quite a common issue and i apologize if it's been repeated hundeds of times, but it's driving me crazy. I have an acer 8920g laptop with an atheros AR8121 pci-e ethernet network card. On my older laptop, the internet connects fine via cable modem and an ethernet cable (this has a broadcom network card). On the newer laptop i just seem to get local access only, with a 169.x.x IP address, no default gateway or DNS server addresses. Both laptops run vista home premium, and i'm totally lost and confused as to where it's going wrong.. Ive been searching a few sites and there doesnt seem to be any definitive answer to this problem. Does anyone know how to fix this before i throw my laptop out of the window?

Unidentified Network - Local Access Only

May 4, 2008

I have scrolled through pages and pages of posts here and tried to find my solution. I must repost this issue for me. I had this issue after building my rig and it miraculously fixed itself one day when I powered the computer on. It worked for a few months. Then I inadvertantly put my computer into hibernation or sleep, instead of powering it off, like I normally do. Vista didn't like that. So now I am offline again.............

Unidentified Network Local Only

Mar 16, 2009

I'm posting this from another laptop using the same router. It seems this is a common problem without any certain resolution. I've tried most of the plentiful suggestions on the web without success. I obviously don't want to flatten the laptop and re-load just to get internet access back.

Unidentified Network - Local Only - UNRE

Mar 19, 2009

This is still unresolved even though I've tries every suggestion on the

net. It seems people usually give up at this stage and reload Vista. My

original post is now on page 3 so probably won't get read anymore.

It's pointess going to Microsoft - it has been a know problem since

Vista was released, and apparently they have done nothing about it.

I do know it's not the router. I do know it's not the wireless adaptor.

I do know I'm not getting any DNS.

Local Access Only After Updates

Dec 14, 2008

My friend, who now does not have a connection to internet with a wired router, has asked me for help. His connection is showing "local access only" . He runs Vista Premium on his desktop and was connected yesterday. Vista updates installed automatically, and after restart he only had " l. a . o. " connection.

Network; Local Access Only

Jun 4, 2008

i just got a new PC last friday with 64bit vista ultimate and i have been having alot of problems with hooking it up to my home network. At first, i would plug it in and it would only let me get into "local area connection" local access only. I did a repair install which got rid of all updates that the company had put on, so its a fresh SP1 install. Now i can sometimes get it to connect to the internet, but the speed is ridiculously slow, like if i look at the antivirus updaters for speed (i cant access speedtest.net cuz it says i dont have flash or w.e. and it wont let me download it cuz the site wont load) i get max speeds of...4 kb/s.

Network Icon Shows Access Local Only

Nov 14, 2009

The network icon shows access Local Only. The network and sharing center shows a red X to the internet. However, I have internet access. It's just reporting that I don't. This is intermittent. Sometimes rebooting solves the issue but the Local Only icon can come back shortly afterwards.

LOCAL FOLDERS NOT UPDATING

May 6, 2008

I recently bought a new Vista computer.

I had a Windows 98 computer previously.

I copied the "dbx" files from Outlook Express 5 into a temporary folder on the new machine.

I imported them into Windows Mail (correcting the path error in the import wizard).

Windows Mail crashed, and when I reloaded Windows Mail all of the local folders had vanished except for the Inbox, which was inaccessible. After restarting it again a few times, nothing changed.

Eventually I went to the folder store in AppData, and deleted all the files in the Windows Mail folder, assuming them to be corrupted in some way.

When I restarted Windows Mail, it recovered and recreated the Local Folders structure for me again.

Back to square one.

I tried importing the "dbx" files again, and this seemed to work, appearing under "Imported Folders".

All seemed well, but now for the problem.

If I want to create a folder, or delete a folder, or move a folder, the change does not show up live in the folders list in the left pane.

However, if I click on local folders, the change shows up in the right pane, which lists the local folders tree in expanded form.

To repeat, Windows Mail seems to make the change to the folder structure, but does not update the live folders list in the left hand pane.

However, if I restart windows mail after creating, deleting or moving, the change is visible in the left hand pane.

'bab' Drivers Stop Sp1 Updating Via WU

Apr 17, 2008

I seem to have one of those 'bad' drivers that stop SP1 from updating via WU. I spoke to a tech support agent for MS last night and they said it's not the drivers that cause the fault, merely re-installing them after SP1 installs. I installed the SP1 standalone and have had no problems since. Is this a safe alternative to use? They also said this problem was with WU and would be fixed on the 18th of this month (April). Is this meaning I can get SP1 with the Creative drivers installed fine via WU?

Despite Troubleshooting; Updating All Drivers

May 7, 2008

I am new to Vista, and definitely not in league with the pros, but I have gone through all the gaming posts, and followed the suggestions for downloading updates, especially the SP1. Here is my issue: Despite troubleshooting; updating all drivers; downloading and installing SP1, and performing all automatic updates, I still receive a critical error message regarding virtual memory, which crashes the game after the first level, when loading the second level of the game.

My system is a HP Pavillion dv9500; windows vista home premium 32 bit OS; AMD Turion 64x2 1.90 Ghz; 1938 MB RAM; I changed the compatibility to those recommended for win 95 games; have increased the virtual memory via custom settings to the maximum of (1938 x 3) allowed per system. I love this game, and really want to play it on my laptop, but at this time, I do not have any free money to upgrade or purchase or make changes in hardware, etc. Does anyone have a fix for this?

My broadband connection is through my old machine and works perfectly, as does the network card installation.

My new machine also indicates that its card is correctly installed and functioning correctly. BUT the Network and Sharing Center window shows this computer as linked to an Unidentified network and no connection to either the other computer or broadband connection.........

Unidentified Program Wants To Access Your Computer Installed

Mar 26, 2008

Mostly, when I install programs in Vista, there's no problem starting them. In a couple of cases, though, whenever I run the program (whether from the Start menu or by double-clicking a data file), Vista posts a message: "An unidentified program wants to access your computer." It gives the options "Cancel" and "Allow". Well, obviously I want to allow the program; I've just started it! And the programs were installed through a normal installation process. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling those specific programs, but I get the same results. How can I tell Vista to stop asking me and just allow it?

Disabling The Network Balloon

May 21, 2008

I use my laptop both at home and at work. I have mapped a network drive to a shared folder on one of my home computers. Now, logically, every time I use my laptop at work, I get a balloon message saying not all network drives could be restored (or similar, I'm translating from dutch). I know that, and I'm not expecting it to be. I just don't want to do it by hand every time I log on to my home network.

Is it possible to disable that balloon? I've found this old (2004) article for XP that allows disabling ALL notification balloons: but most balloons actually contain useful information. I only want to disable this specific balloon tooltip. Using: Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit, without SP1 (haven't received it through Windows Update yet, and I'm not downloading it manually).

Unidentified Network With Windows Vista - In SP1?

Mar 23, 2008

I have a functioning XP network with Zyxel 335 router. 3 wireless and 1 wired

connection. Works OK. Installed a new computer with windows vista wired (old

USB wireless driver didn??t work with Vista). Only local access to

unidentified network. IP-adress 169.... and not 192.168.1.34 which the router

says it should have. When I changed to the same network name all computers

could see each other but later the Vista computer was missing. It??s very

confusing.

What should I do? My son wants to reach the internet from his computer and

we want to share his printer.

I??ve tried support from my ISP and router. ISP wont help -says it??s problem

with Vista..Zyxel says it will be solved in Vista SP1. Does anybody know if

this is the case and when is that released?

Unidentified Network Wireless Connection

May 17, 2008

On my new laprop with Vista Home Premium I have several network connections for the different locations at home. Beside the wireless internet connection I have a wired and a wireless connection to my local network,, which ends up in a proxy server for the internet connection. My wireless connection directly to the internet (IP=3D192.168.1.51) is correctly identified with the name of my wireless router. The other network connections (IP 10.1.1.x) are identified as "Unidentified network" and declared as "Public". I always have to manually redefine it as "Private" but did not find a possibility to change the name. Is there a way to permanently set the desired values?

I also have a problem that the connection to my XP business desktop breaks down after a while. I have a mapping to a share (c$) which works prefectly for a while but after some time (don't have enough experience yet how long it actually takes) copying files from vista to XP is not possible anymore, while the opposite direction is still OK. I guess it cannot be a fierwall problem, I have turned off the Windows firewall and use a desktop firewall that works OK all the time.

Unidentified Network Router Setting

Mar 23, 2008

I recently moved my wireless router and cable modem away from my Vista PC. It was always configured wirelessly, as I knew I would have to move it at some point. I left the computer on when I unplugged the router etc. and then set them up downstairs. When I tried to access the network after everything had been set up again, I noticed that Vista thought my home network was an "Unidentified network" but still had my ssid in (___). Only problem was that now my network is "local only". I am connected to the router as local-only, and tried to adjust my router setting via the router page at 192.168.1.1 It was returned as page not found. Is Vista confused? If I was truly conncted to the router and even if internet was not working I should be able to adjust the settings on the router, right?

I can access the internet just fine with all of my other devices in the house, such as Tivo, Ps3 and Windows mobile cellphone. All of these are able to connect to the internet through my router. There are other networks available around me, so I tried to connect to one of those. Same thing, local only. I cannot confirm that internet works on this other network. But I have narrowed it down to a problem with my Vista computer.

Internet Not Working After Installing 64 Bit, Unidentified Network, Limited/noconne

Sep 12, 2009

I just installed an OEM windows vista home premium onto my computer so that I could take advantage of my 6GB ram. Unfortunately I don't know too much about building systems and I have an internet problem. After I installed the OS, when I plug my computer into my router, I always recieve "unidentified network..limited or no connectivity". I've done everything that the internet company has asked me to do as far as my modem/router is concerned, and Acer wants to charge me a buttload for their help.

Am I missing something simple that I need to do with my 64 bit software? I downloaded the 64 bit drivers for my LAN, audio etc from the acer website but it seems to still do no good. I even downloaded the driver directly from my Lan ethernet controllers brand website. I've been stuck here for days without much help and the wierd thing is that my girlfriend can plug her computer (32 bit vista home premium) right into the router and it connects fine. I'm downloading SP2 now if that makes any difference.

Local Access Only For 2nd Laptop

Sep 16, 2009

I have 2 laptops both running vista home premium and both have been working perfectly until recently. I use 3 mobile broadband and this worked fine until i upgraded the hardware to a faster version. When i did this i could not connect to the internet on my 2nd laptop. I was getting the message "local access only". My other laptop still worked fine on the new dongle so I could live without my 2nd laptop on my home internet as i primarily use this one for college anyway. However, i then decided to get a mobile broadband router. When i connect this up i can detect the network on both laptops and connect to it but i am now getting the message "local access only" on both computers.

I have spent literally hours of my life on the phone running through every kind of test with my isp and still have gotten nowhere. They cannot identify the problem and are telling me that there actually isn't one and can't understand why its not working!
