I keep getting reminded by the automatic updating that I have updates. Many of them lately have been for Office which I don't have. How do I get rid of these from the list of updates? They don't go away.
View 5 RepliesAnyone know if its possible and if so how to prevent Vista from keeping the message balloon of "Automatic Updates is off" from popping up?, each time I reboot after a few minutes this pops up and its irritating me, I don't have automatic updates on as I choose when to go and check for any, but this message will insist on popping up to remind me, but I'm not daft and would like it to know if its possible to stop it
View 3 Replies View RelatedI bought a Vista back in 2007 and the internet has been working great until recently. I got a rogue on my laptop and ever since I only get local access. I've been googling this thing for around 3 ~ 4 days now and I've tried just about everything I've come across and nothing seems to be working. It says I'm connected to the router with excellent signal strength but then it says the router isn't connected to the internet and I'm sure that's not the issue because the computer I'm typing this on is connected to the router fine and it's a Vista as well so I'm sure it's not a router-Vista compatibility issue.
I've tried ..
- disabling IPv6
- updating drivers (there were no updates)
- multiple scans
- disabling firewall
- uninstalling norton (with the removal tool download)
- deleting my router profile and trying to connect again
- connect via ethernet cord (doesn't work)
When I do IPCONFIG /ALL, I get .. I've tried manually putting in the IP stuff, but I didn't know the gateway and DNS details so I couldn't really do it.
** I DONT have the reformat disks. When I bought the laptop they didn't provide me with one and when we asked for one they said they'd send us one but never did. Now they're closed (nationally) and I'm not sure as to where I could get one...................
I have Vista Home Premium. SP1 doesn't show up on automatic updates, and I can't find it to download manually? I read here that it was available yesterday.

View 6 Replies View Relatedi'm experimenting an issue since i bought ir i can't put to sleep my commputer! could you believe it? but not ever, sometimes sleeps well, but others when i select sleep, the computers go to sleep but in a second start again, also i don't know if here is something like hibernate, like XP, if it's the option i don't find it yet. my power options sayd that the power botton is the one that active the hibernation, but when i press the power botton, the laptop go to sleep and sometimes wake up again. I have the SP! and the automatic updates, and my problem isn't solved
View 6 Replies View RelatedI used to have Vista Home Basic on my computer. I have a Logitech mouse that came with software, and it displayed a Logitech Mouse and Keyboard icon in the system tray. You could adjust mouse settings, and it told you when your wireless mouse's batteries were dying. So I got a new hard drive and a version of Vista Home Premium. Installed Vista and all of my programs, including the Logitech software. Now when I login I get the message that Windows wants to run setpointupdate.exe and I have to click Allow or Cancel. I never got this message with Vista Home Basic.
I've already Googled setpointupdate.exe and read many posts (including one on this site) saying that you have to go into your Logitech settings and disable automatic updates (tried that, didn't work), or that you had to uninstall your Logitech software all-together. But I want the software - I never change my mouse settings, but I like that the system tray icon warns me when the batteries are dying. Yes, I could uninstall the software and figure out on my own that the batteries are dying (by my mouse stopping working), but why should I have to uninstall this Logitech software? Isn't there a way to tell Windows that setpointupdate.exe is ok to run and that I don't have to click Allow EVERY time I login?
Both sleep and hibernation worked perfectly according to the power options settings at their preset times before installing updates KB953155 and KB954154. Now, the power options do not work anymore, only the manual command works. I uninstalled those updates and also tried to make a restore from a restore point I made just before installing the updates. Windows makes an automatic restore point, also. I tried this one too, but nothing solves the problem. It is a desktop pc, and I use those functions all along the day when unexpectedly going out and coming in. I don’t know what else to do.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm using vista 64 for the last 2 months and it worked quite good in general. Yesterday after downloading some automatic updates (and i don't think this was the cause for what i specify next...) the system started working very slow, with sudden freezes, slow reaction to clicks on icons, starting programs etc. Another annoying issue that the system started booting very slow: after the green marker which shows after booting, there's a very long stop before i get the log on window. What's really strange is that i don't see the harddrive working in this time...it seems like freeze, like the one happens when the windows is up and running.
My system is intel quad q6600 cpu, 4gb 800 mhz memory,gigabye dq6 680i motherboard,and new hitachi sata2 hardrives. Does it sounds more like hardware problem? (till yesterday all was good!)or more like windows problem? (i have a backup of the system from 2 months ago,right after i installed the system, but no more backups and restore points....)
I have some Vista Business users running with Limited accounts so that they can't install programs with the admin password. MS Automatic Update service seems to be running as Administrator so those patches get applied seemlessly and without my user having to call me to apply them. But I would truely love the ability to allow for Firefox and Adobe Reader to update themselves as well? Is this possible? I just can't keep up with all those updates on those two program for everyone here at work. Hey, I wonder if Google Updater can update these apps seemlessly: Ummm... I guess this runs as a System Account. I'll give this a shot and see. Otherwise any other suggestions are welcome. Overall though, I'd like to see how to define a specific program (well understanding the security ramifications) to install it as admin automatically.
View 6 Replies View RelatedDesktop PC will be one year next month. I did not renew the Microsoft Office after trial period that came as a package w/ no future intention of acquiring it. I'm using the free Open Office program - word processing mostly at this time. Is there anything in the list below that is of importance? I only have a basic PC with DVD player for movies, etc. No scanner, printer or fax. Not even external hard drive or usb flash drive. Otherwise, I understand that I can just choose to hide the updates, so it will not keep reminding me. Also, I choose to keep my OS w/ Srvce pk 1 and MS IE version 7 for as long as I'll be able to. I had too many probs with Srvce pk 2 and MS IE version 8. Your opinion, if any, is welcome.......
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a fairly new comp (2 months old) running under X64 and running well. I had some trouble setting up my Sound Blaster Live but finally managed to get everything going using a file I found on this forum. After doing some reading here I find I should be updating to SP1 and that there might be issues with Creative drivers while doing so.
So before I attempt the download and install, I would be grateful for any advice. Like... should I remove my Sound Blaster? Do I need to un-install the creative driver? Can I just disable that piece of hardware in the device manager? Can I leave everything the way it is and attempt the download/install? Or is there something completely different I should be doing to make this the least painful possible.
I've had a few problem's with my computer since building it a few years ago and i've managed to bear the brunt of them, but the one that I've never been able to fix has finally got me. I can't seem to update Vista! I got a new game today Order of War, which requires Service Pack One, so I did the what was needed, I went into my Windows Update and asked the program to update my computer, 106 important updates downloaded and installing, then comes the part I didn't want to see, it tells me the updates were downloaded but not all were able to be installed, about 2 of them got installed! View 9 Replies View Relatedeverytime i start up my laptop it just gets to the part where u have to put ur password but instead it says its installing updates it got stuck on update number 3 of 3 at 0% and it wont move it left it on for like 2 hours straight and it just stays like that after like a few minutes it just says shutting down. and the cycle starts over again it keeps doing that never any change anyone knows whats wrong with it and what i can do to fix it the laptop is a Toshiba Satellite.
View 9 Replies View RelatedHi i have just bought a new laptop as i fried the MoBo in my last one which i bought in the early days of Vista, not realising what system requirements were for Vista i landed up with a very under resourced in the hardware dept. laptop and i am shure my constant tinkering with the hardware caused the death of it.
Which brings me to my query (now that i am overly paranoid about tinkering with hardware) i have been researching and have found there is very mixed opinion on applying Bios updates and was wondering what people here thoughts. I have two pending Bios updates 1st addresses better support for SP2 and the 2nd improves system performance & LCD panel brightness.
and if i apply these updates do i need to do both updates or just apply the current one, any opinions would be greatfully received.
I use Firefox and I would like IE8 to stop showing up as a critical update.

I recently updated a bunch of drivers on my Inspiron 1525 with Vista Home Premium 64bit; and, now the Fingerprint logon icon is on my login screen. It wasn't there before and I don't believe it was a part of my updating. I have searched everywhere for the Fingerprint Driver and have not found it or anything that could be linked to it. I wish to remove its annoying presence from my computer.
View 4 Replies View RelatedHP-Update FIRMWARE update problem? I got some critical update for my Seagate 320 gb hard drive’s firmware. I went to download an process the update, later it asked me to insert a blank disk. Well I don’t have a blank disk but I hit bootable cd anyway thinking it would create some file on the hard drive. Well obviously that’s not what it had in mind because my disk drive opened, I shut the disk drive and it started saying writing data to disk. HOW could it do that with no disk. I couldn’t close it. It then said installation succesfull. What the heck. I restarted my computer to see if I had screwed up my system and it seams to be running fine. Have I screwed up my hard drive? Did the dang update install? Can I delete these firmware updte files lying around on my desktop?

I had a Windows 98 computer previously.
I copied the "dbx" files from Outlook Express 5 into a temporary folder on the new machine.
I imported them into Windows Mail (correcting the path error in the import wizard).
Windows Mail crashed, and when I reloaded Windows Mail all of the local folders had vanished except for the Inbox, which was inaccessible. After restarting it again a few times, nothing changed.
Eventually I went to the folder store in AppData, and deleted all the files in the Windows Mail folder, assuming them to be corrupted in some way.
When I restarted Windows Mail, it recovered and recreated the Local Folders structure for me again.
Back to square one.
I tried importing the "dbx" files again, and this seemed to work,appearing under "Imported Folders".
All seemed well, but now for the problem.
If I want to create a folder, or delete a folder, or move a folder,the change does not show up live in the folders list in the left pane.
However, if I click on local folders, the change shows up in the right pane, which lists the local folders tree in expanded form.
To repeat, Windows Mail seems to make the change to the folder structure, but does not update the live folders list in the left hand pane.
However, if I restart windows mail after creating, deleting or moving, the change is visible in the left hand pane.
I've been running into a problem lately running Steam on vista. It seems that whenever I start the steam client it crashes 26% into updating itself with some weird exception. I tried uninstalling steam and then reinstalling steam to see if this solved the problem, but I haven't had much luck so far. Has anyone else been experiencing this issue, and possibly, does anyone know of any work arounds.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI seem to have one of those 'bad' drivers that stop SP1 from updating via WU. I spoke to a tech support agent for MS last night and they said it's not the drivers that cause the fault, merely re-installing them after SP1 installs. I installed the SP1 standalone and have had no problems since. Is this a safe alternative to use? They also said this problem was with WU and would be fixed on the 18th of this month (April). Is this meaning I can get SP1 with the Creative drivers installed fine via WU?

Here is my issue: Despite troubleshooting; updating all drivers; downloading and installing SP1, and performing all automatic updates, I still receive a critical error message regarding virtual memory, which crashes the game after the first level, when loading the second level of the game.
My system is a HP Pavillion dv9500; windows vista home premium 32 bit OS; AMD Turion 64x2 1.90 Ghz; 1938 MB RAM; I changed the compatibility to those recommended for win 95 games; have increased the virtual memory via custom settings to the maximum of (1938 x 3) allowed per system. I love this game, and really want to play it on my laptop, but at this time, I do not have any free money to upgrade or purchase or make changes in hardware, etc. Does anyone have a fix for this?

I feel like something is wrong with the update system. I reinstalled Vista and disabled automatic updates. However, after a while I started to get the same problem. If I use the windows update tool it wont update anything, it gives me error code 80240016 , 80092004 or 80073712 which doesnt even appear on the microsoft site even though its apparently very common. The only reason I wanted SP1 is because of the problem with virtual address space when playing games. My work machine will never have vista on it.
