After Downloading Automatic Updates The System Started Working Very Slow
Nov 15, 2008
I'm using vista 64 for the last 2 months and it worked quite good in general. Yesterday after downloading some automatic updates (and i don't think this was the cause for what i specify next...) the system started working very slow, with sudden freezes, slow reaction to clicks on icons, starting programs etc. Another annoying issue that the system started booting very slow: after the green marker which shows after booting, there's a very long stop before i get the log on window. What's really strange is that i don't see the harddrive working in this time...it seems like freeze, like the one happens when the windows is up and running.
My system is intel quad q6600 cpu, 4gb 800 mhz memory, gigabye dq6 680i motherboard, and new hitachi sata2 hardrives. Does it sounds more like hardware problem? (till yesterday all was good!)or more like windows problem? (i have a backup of the system from 2 months ago, right after i installed the system, but no more backups and restore points....)

I have a big problem with my laptop as when the windows is started up and a speicial icon appeared on the taskbar, the windows is converted to a dummy otherwise its seems good. I have a printed screen for that icon, but i don't know how to post it! at the last time i have installed a 3 antiviruse programs but no result, but some times during the scaning the sysytem was stoped and a blue window (with error message talking about new hardware or software not compatible).

After installing these two updates: .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB959209) x64 Update to .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 for the .NET Framework Assistant x64 (KB963707), The performance of my PC drastically slowed down during start-up and running of other processes and programs. I decided to uninstall them; and the performance seemed to be back to normal. My question is: Are these updates really necessary for my PC; do I absolutely need them?

When I got started moving/ downloading files I had to change my UAC (user account control) settings lower, or remove them all together. Will this have an adverse effect to my lap top? Note: I don't have the site up yet.

Anyone know if its possible and if so how to prevent Vista from keeping the message balloon of "Automatic Updates is off" from popping up?, each time I reboot after a few minutes this pops up and its irritating me, I don't have automatic updates on as I choose when to go and check for any, but this message will insist on popping up to remind me, but I'm not daft and would like it to know if its possible to stop it

About six weeks ago I had an issue with my computer that seems to be related to an update downloaded at that time. I had Automatic Update set to download and install updates automatically and after one such update, the computer instructed me to restart which I did. All went well until I logged in. The log in screen came up, I logged in and hit enter and the desktop started to load...and froze there. I restarted in safe mode and system restore failed. I called Dell and they walked me through diagnostics until they were fairly sure that it was not a hardware problem. I finally got it to reboot from the Windows disk that came with the computer, but the problem persisted. No error message, no lights, no beeps. Just frozen at the same place at the same time. In addition, each time I had to hold the power button down to reboot, my RAID array would have to 're-verify' the data on both disks which would take about 4 hours before I could even think of doing anything with the box.
Finally Dell had me restore the system from a partition on my hard drive which reset the computer to how it was from the factory... It worked fine till I downloaded the updates again. The last bunch included a Vista security update and a bunch of Office updates. I had to Factory Image reinstall again. I have now shut off my Auto Update. It tells me that there are updates to download, but I have not done any of them in the last month........

My computer will shutdown improperly during the night. I thought it was the automatic updates, but I checked the update center and it says nothing has been done. Sometimes, when it is sleeping and I try to start it back up, it will also shutdown for no apparent reason.

I keep getting reminded by the automatic updating that I have updates. Many of them lately have been for Office which I don't have. How do I get rid of these from the list of updates? They don't go away.

I used to have Vista Home Basic on my computer. I have a Logitech mouse that came with software, and it displayed a Logitech Mouse and Keyboard icon in the system tray. You could adjust mouse settings, and it told you when your wireless mouse's batteries were dying. So I got a new hard drive and a version of Vista Home Premium. Installed Vista and all of my programs, including the Logitech software. Now when I login I get the message that Windows wants to run setpointupdate.exe and I have to click Allow or Cancel. I never got this message with Vista Home Basic.
I've already Googled setpointupdate.exe and read many posts (including one on this site) saying that you have to go into your Logitech settings and disable automatic updates (tried that, didn't work), or that you had to uninstall your Logitech software all-together. But I want the software - I never change my mouse settings, but I like that the system tray icon warns me when the batteries are dying. Yes, I could uninstall the software and figure out on my own that the batteries are dying (by my mouse stopping working), but why should I have to uninstall this Logitech software? Isn't there a way to tell Windows that setpointupdate.exe is ok to run and that I don't have to click Allow EVERY time I login?

Both sleep and hibernation worked perfectly according to the power options settings at their preset times before installing updates KB953155 and KB954154. Now, the power options do not work anymore, only the manual command works. I uninstalled those updates and also tried to make a restore from a restore point I made just before installing the updates. Windows makes an automatic restore point, also. I tried this one too, but nothing solves the problem. It is a desktop pc, and I use those functions all along the day when unexpectedly going out and coming in. I don’t know what else to do.

I have some Vista Business users running with Limited accounts so that they can't install programs with the admin password. MS Automatic Update service seems to be running as Administrator so those patches get applied seemlessly and without my user having to call me to apply them. But I would truely love the ability to allow for Firefox and Adobe Reader to update themselves as well? Is this possible? I just can't keep up with all those updates on those two program for everyone here at work. Hey, I wonder if Google Updater can update these apps seemlessly: Ummm... I guess this runs as a System Account. I'll give this a shot and see. Otherwise any other suggestions are welcome. Overall though, I'd like to see how to define a specific program (well understanding the security ramifications) to install it as admin automatically.

Having issues with UAC (what a surprise). Originally started off as a problem with Microsoft Office not working properly and telling me it had not been installed for the current user. After about an hour and a half on the phone with Microsoft Support and a Remote assistance from a microsoft technician later... I find out that UAC is causing all the problems. Is there a way to Turn it off for a select program/s?

I had Netmeter installed to show network activity. I like to see if I'm downloading or if I'm just sitting waiting for nothing. Then when on vacation in June/July, Netmeter on Vista suddenly started displaying an incredibly long list of "network adapters" with the weirdest names and descriptions, while at the same time saying it couldn't find any active adapter. This after it worked for a long time (years?) on XP and then on Vista since December when I got a new laptop. In frustration I downloaded the Netmeter beta. This alleviated the problem and I could see network activity again. Unfortunately, the beta was simply an .exe file, not an install through Windows installer.
Now, after a few weeks, when I start up, I get a message that Netmeter has stopped working and that Vista has reported the problem to MS (asif that will do anything!). Unfortunately, I can't get it to not start up, since the option to start at boot-up is set in the program and since the program won't start ... you get my drift? How can I safely tell Vista to not attempt to start Netmeter at start-up?

It started two days ago. When I woke up my computer was on but there was no display. I rebooted the machine and it it came up fine but seemed to shut abnormaly. Later that day when I tried to remote control into my machine I was able to get a black screen (so the connection was established but know video.) When I got home it was the same thing: the computer was on but no video and keyboard and mouse did not work. It seemed though, after looking at the logs, that the computer was functioning because there were logs created during the time it was "off." Looking through the logs I could see nothing abrnormal. Truly I don't know what I was looking for? Anyway, in power options I turned off the feature to shut down monitor after certain time. Turned off screen saver.
The sleep mode was already off. I was connected to PC via remote control from work and machine rebooted itself. All it said in log was: The previous system shutdown at 7:30:29 PM on 4/24/2008 was unexpected. Not sure if the reboot and the aforementioned issue is related. Anyway, I am not sure why this started happening. I did install a game call Rome Univerisalus or some such name. I uninstalled the game when I started having problems. It didn't work anyway. I am using Vista 64. I just recently built the computer. Didn't experience any problems until recently. Does anyone know how I can figure out what is going on? And even better, how to fix. I am thinking of using the restore point of before I installed the game.

After installing SP2, on 5/25, System Restore seems to have stopped creating automatic restore points every 24 hours. I checked the Task Manger and it is set for 24 hours. It shows a restore point being created on 5/26. System Restore shows the last Restore Point being created on 5/25 about 1 hour after downloading.

I have an updates issue. I just downloaded & installed SP1 on the system. And after that everytime I start the system I get a small popup which states as windows update is not enabled. I have tried every thing possible. But cannot do that. When I checked services.msc. It showed automatic updates as disabled, whenever I try to set it manual. It say service cannot be started & is gets disabled again. I have run scans but got nothing.

Sometimes, after installing MS updates or other apps, I lose my sound. The only way I get it back is to use System Restore to a point where the sound worked. However, then I don't have the updates or apps. This tells me that it's a software problem with Vista - not a hardware problem. Now, I am about 11 MS updates behind - and no sound. Also, the System Restore doesn't work anymore (I no longer have a Restore point where the sound worked). I've Googled and have found that many people have similar problems with their HP laptops. I am using Vista, SP-2. I am now going to ionstall the updates since I can't go back to get the sound. I've checked in Device Manager (no problem) and made sure I'm using the most recent signed driver. I can't find any text indication that I have a problem but when I go to Playback Options and try the sound Test, I get a message which says the sound didn't play. Hope I included all the relevant information. If not, please tell me. I've tried everything I know of. I have a full backup of my hard drive

It was suggested to do a system restore to correct the problem of my computer restarting itself, which started after an update. I'm concerned if I will lose my files since that time if I do a system restore. Or what does it restore? Can someone explain it a little more to me....

Basically System Restore stopped working and Updates will not complete across a reboot. Both worked up till about two months ago on a clean install early last year. Have no idea as to what I may have done and it is too easy to suspect a recent update cause ~ though you never know. I've read heaps on a lot of forums and as a result tried a few things to see if they work ~ nothing yet. Other than TrustedInstaller.exe hanging the system on 100.5% at times this system actually still works.
My posting here is to try to understand what " net mapping " is and its effect on Vista Ultimate as it appears that this may well have something to do with these problems. If I recall correctly, I changed a stand alone ( usb ) 100GIG hard drive ( for storage ) to a 320GIG unit. Since then these problems started..........

if their updates don't come through after installing sp1? If so, I have windows 32 bit os and it is set to install automatically at 3 am, but my compuer is always asleep then, but when I wake it up in the am, I used to get a windows symbol at the bottom right telling me there is an update avail.! Now, it won't do that after the update to sp1? I just recently changed the time to auto. update at 1 pm, when my computer is turned on, so I am waiting to see if it will do that. I have checked the options and they are set right, I just think that after the install of sp1 my os now does not recognize when there is an update avail.
