Anyone know if its possible and if so how to prevent Vista from keeping the message balloon of "Automatic Updates is off" from popping up?, each time I reboot after a few minutes this pops up and its irritating me, I don't have automatic updates on as I choose when to go and check for any, but this message will insist on popping up to remind me, but I'm not daft and would like it to know if its possible to stop it

View 6 Replies View Relatedi'm experimenting an issue since i bought ir i can't put to sleep my commputer! could you believe it? but not ever, sometimes sleeps well, but others when i select sleep, the computers go to sleep but in a second start again, also i don't know if here is something like hibernate, like XP, if it's the option i don't find it yet. my power options sayd that the power botton is the one that active the hibernation, but when i press the power botton, the laptop go to sleep and sometimes wake up again. View 5 Replies View RelatedI used to have Vista Home Basic on my computer. I have a Logitech mouse that came with software, and it displayed a Logitech Mouse and Keyboard icon in the system tray. You could adjust mouse settings, and it told you when your wireless mouse's batteries were dying. So I got a new hard drive and a version of Vista Home Premium. Installed Vista and all of my programs, including the Logitech software. Now when I login I get the message that Windows wants to run setpointupdate.exe and I have to click Allow or Cancel. I never got this message with Vista Home Basic.
I've already Googled setpointupdate.exe and read many posts (including one on this site) saying that you have to go into your Logitech settings and disable automatic updates (tried that, didn't work), or that you had to uninstall your Logitech software all-together. But I want the software - I never change my mouse settings, but I like that the system tray icon warns me when the batteries are dying. Yes, I could uninstall the software and figure out on my own that the batteries are dying (by my mouse stopping working), but why should I have to uninstall this Logitech software? Isn't there a way to tell Windows that setpointupdate.exe is ok to run and that I don't have to click Allow EVERY time I login?
Both sleep and hibernation worked perfectly according to the power options settings at their preset times before installing updates KB953155 and KB954154. Now, the power options do not work anymore, only the manual command works. I uninstalled those updates and also tried to make a restore from a restore point I made just before installing the updates. Windows makes an automatic restore point, also. I tried this one too, but nothing solves the problem. It is a desktop pc, and I use those functions all along the day when unexpectedly going out and coming in. I don’t know what else to do.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm using vista 64 for the last 2 months and it worked quite good in general. Yesterday after downloading some automatic updates (and i don't think this was the cause for what i specify next...) the system started working very slow, with sudden freezes, slow reaction to clicks on icons, starting programs etc. Another annoying issue that the system started booting very slow: after the green marker which shows after booting, there's a very long stop before i get the log on window. What's really strange is that i don't see the harddrive working in this time...it seems like freeze, like the one happens when the windows is up and running.
My system is intel quad q6600 cpu, 4gb 800 mhz memory,gigabye dq6 680i motherboard,and new hitachi sata2 hardrives. Does it sounds more like hardware problem? (till yesterday all was good!)or more like windows problem? (i have a backup of the system from 2 months ago,right after i installed the system, but no more backups and restore points....)
I have some Vista Business users running with Limited accounts so that they can't install programs with the admin password. MS Automatic Update service seems to be running as Administrator so those patches get applied seemlessly and without my user having to call me to apply them. But I would truely love the ability to allow for Firefox and Adobe Reader to update themselves as well? Is this possible? I just can't keep up with all those updates on those two program for everyone here at work. Hey, I wonder if Google Updater can update these apps seemlessly: Ummm... I guess this runs as a System Account. I'll give this a shot and see. Otherwise any other suggestions are welcome. Overall though, I'd like to see how to define a specific program (well understanding the security ramifications) to install it as admin automatically.
View 6 Replies View RelatedDesktop PC will be one year next month. I did not renew the Microsoft Office after trial period that came as a package w/ no future intention of acquiring it. I'm using the free Open Office program - word processing mostly at this time. Is there anything in the list below that is of importance? I only have a basic PC with DVD player for movies, etc. No scanner, printer or fax. Not even external hard drive or usb flash drive. Otherwise, I understand that I can just choose to hide the updates, so it will not keep reminding me. Also, I choose to keep my OS w/ Srvce pk 1 and MS IE version 7 for as long as I'll be able to. I had too many probs with Srvce pk 2 and MS IE version 8. Your opinion, if any, is welcome.......

I feel like something is wrong with the update system. I reinstalled Vista and disabled automatic updates. However, after a while I started to get the same problem. I have Office, Visual Studio, Messenger and a few Adobe products installed.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI use a laptop at the office and at home. My problem is that Vista won't update its network settings automatically when I change from one network to another. Per example, my office network has 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 addresses and my home network has 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 addresses. When I arrive at home and the computer connects to the network, it keeps its 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 address, which of course results in limited connectivity. I have to use the Repair tool each time to get the connection back (and it means waiting for a looooong minute in front of the computer...)

I record multiple TV shows on a day. Vista windows movie maker can convert them from dvr-ms to wmv, but can convert 1 file per project. Converting takes very long, so if I have to convert them manually 1 by 1, it takes too much time.
What I would like is to have a program that can convert multiple dvr-ms files simultaneously or through a automatic waiting list. Just like Windows media player can do with MP3. You place a CD in your computer, choose which songs you want to convert to MP3, and media player converts them automatically 1 by 1. You don???t have to do anything else.

However, it says next scheduled defrag = never, and the automatic defrag does not occur. I have to start it manually each month. I do not know what is wrong, nor how to fix it.

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium and connect to the internet via a wireless router (Sky). I installed MSE a couple of weeks ago, but upon checking yesterday I found that it actually does not update (automatic or manual), instead it gives me the error message "Virus & Spyware definitions update failed. MSE was not able to check for updates - make sure computer is connected to the interned and try again", even though I am clearly connected to the internet (actually using it whilst trying to update MSE).
Having read your forum I uninstalled MSE, used a clean up tool to remove any potential remainders of previous anti-spyware programs and re-installed MSE. Initially the virus update worked fine, scanned the laptop and thought problem sorted. This morning, out of interest, I tried to update the virus definitions again, just to see if it works, but no, I am now getting the same error message again...also, for quite some time now, when Windows informs me that there are updates available and I try to install these I get an error message, plus I can't log into Messenger either?

I have also gone into "Security Center" and tried to turn it on, but it says error:1058 and won't let me. I've even gone onto windows.com to scan computer for updates, but won't allow me to without having automatic updates on. And then it gives steps of how to do so. clicking on START and clicking RUN typing in services.msc to change all 3 things of what it says to to get automatic updates to turn on. NOTHING HAS WORKED, I've defragmented and cleaned disk for the computer, upgraded my virus/ spyware software and tried lookin up for solutions and haven't found any.
